We sign off on Gameweek 7 by name checking Arsenal’s Spanish schemer, looking at the potentially problematic route into United’s first XI and the upturn in defensive solidity by many of the big guns…

The Player

Arsenal’s win at West Ham, played out in front of the tv cameras on Saturday evening, afforded Fantasy managers the opportunity to run the rule over the Gunners’ assets ahead of a trip to Norwich next time out. While Arsene Wenger’s side impressed by coming back from a one-goal deficit to end the hosts unbeaten home run, there was little doubt as to the game’s chief protagonist.

Dictating the visitors’ play from his role in “the hole”, Santi Cazorla was simply a class apart. Offering a constant goal threat and providing opportunities aplenty for his team mates, the little Spaniard’s performance backed up our own ICT Index, where he leads the way after the first seven Gameweeks of the season.

After a couple of opening blank Gameweeks, the summer signing from Malaga is turning into one of the most consistent Fantasy performers around right now. Cazorla has now scored or assisted in four of his last five appearances, averaging seven FPL points per game from the Gameweek 3 trip to Liverpool onwards, while in the Sky Sports game, he has already received three Man of the Match awards.

While many FPL managers had considered Gervinho as an Arsenal midfield alternative due to his cheaper price and out of position role as a lone frontmen, the Ivorian’s shift to the flank last weekend saw his stock take a significant dip. Gervinho cut a frustrated figure out wide, as Olivier Giroud took the opportunity to notch his first league goal for the Gunners – Cazorla’s position as the main instigator of the Gunners’ attacking moves is nailed-on, by comparison.

With a trip to Norwich and a couple of home games against QPR and Fulham in the next four, the bandwagon is already picking up speed. Budgets are being juggled, squads reassembled, as Fantasy managers attempt to find space in our five-man midfields for a player who is starting to look irresistible for many.

The Team

A 3-0 win at Newcastle produced United’s first away clean sheet of the season, with Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra and Tom Cleverley the goalscorers. While that’s all good and well for Sir Alex Ferguson, from a Fantasy perspective, the Red Devils are proving to be a real headache right now. United, clearly, have plenty of Fantasy potential – top scorers with 17 goals under their belt already, they have scored two or more times per game since the 1-0 opening defeat at Everton.

In midfield, Shinji Kagawa was subbed off midway through the second-half yet again – the fifth time in a row this has happened – while Nani failed to make the squad entirely. Antonio Valencia could, perhaps, offer us an alternative – back in the squad despite his manager ruling him out earlier in the week, he climbed off the bench at the Sports Direct Arena and comes back into contention, having provided assists in his last two starts.

Wayne Rooney’s recent to the starting XI for the first time since Gameweek 1 also muddied the Fantasy waters around Old Trafford way. Starting alongside Robin Van Persie up top for the first time in the league, he stole the limelight with a pair of assists and maximum bonus; a worrying sign for the Dutchman’s owners, with sales of the former Arsenal skipper beginning to pick up after a single goal in the last four Gameweeks. Faith in Van Persie will surely remain strong but with Rooney coming in at 11.7 in FPL and Van Persie price at 13.5, the option to free up budget and strengthen elsewhere is suddenly becoming that little bit more tempting.

The Talking Point

Without a single clean sheet between them in the opening six Gameweeks, City, Liverpool and Spurs all finally produced the goods last weekend. Investment at the back has mainly been restricted to Leighton Baines and the nailed-on Chelsea contingent, with United’s Rafael perhaps staking a case for inclusion, too, but, as the season begins to finally settle down, are we seeing a resurgence in defensive solidity from the main protagonists at last?

With United also nullifying Newcastle’s threat on Sunday afternoon, this means that four of last season’s top six defences (in terms of goals conceded) all produced the goods. With Chelsea on the verge of a tricky run of fixtures, Roberto Di Matteo’s side could be hard pushed to maintain a record that has seen them concede a mere four goals thus far – Branislav Ivanovic owners will surely hold firm but last weekend’s results hint that the Serbian may have a fight on his hands to remain at the top of the FPL defenders rankings if the pattern continues.

Surprisingly, defenders have been the top scoring FPL players in five of the first seven Gameweeks of the 2012/12 campaign. Ivanovic, Angel Rangel, Alexander Buttner, Ashley Cole and Aleksandar Kolarov have shown that the men at the back are more than capable of racking up significant scores, with only two forwards – Carlos Tevez and Luis Suarez breaking this somewhat unexpected run. With a new-found resilience possibly on the cards for a handful of new contenders, investment at the back could become a priority for many over the next fortnight as we begin to reassess our squads and plan for the upcoming Gameweeks.

    Mignolet (Federici)
    Rafael Hangeland Demel (Clyne Gorkks)
    Bale Cazorla Pienaar Fellaini (Dyer)
    Rvp Tevez Ba
    0.2 in bank
    2 FT's

Decided not to waste a transfer on Federici.. so Mignolet starts for the next 8 games(nice run too)
Was thinkin about doin Rvp + Demel to Baines + Berbatov, but now startin to think that'll be a waste.. Instead thinkin of just using one of my transfers to get rid of Dyer for Sterling and get Wilson in for Demel and bench him. No real priorities apart from Fellaini. What to do?

Looking for an edge to help climb the ladder. Without RVP I'm prob gonna have to keep searching for small edges where I can to stay ahead of the curve. I'm gonna stick with my Chelsea players for now as I favor form over fixtures. Berba is the only player I'd really wanna bring in next week so if not him I might have to let a FT go to waste.

Current front 3 are Tevez, Fletcher and Ba. If Berba comes in it should be for to be for Fletcher. Other 2 have pretty good stats to back up their current output.

The argument for value (what it means to not have RVP)

We all know that RVP doesn't provide the best value out there. Let me put this forward to you though, what big hitters currently provide decent value? If I did the value thing and sold RVP for Ba I'd be left with 9.2m in the bank with a team that is purely value based. I think there is enough cash available in our squads to allow for 2 or 3 luxury players that will be near the top of the points charts come the end of the season even though they may appear to be bad value.

At some point you just gotta pay for the points. I don't doubt that if RVP stays fit he'll bag 25 goals this season for Man u. I'm hoping that as my team value increases I'll be able to bring him in later on in the season as I don't plan to go the whole season with no Man u cover.

The reason I cut him on my W/C was that I had a shocking start to the season and decided to go against the grain to make up the points. It worked out but I coulda easily been left in hell like most who went without Rooney early last season were.

I had to Chose between RVP, cheap mid and cheap defender or Ba, Bale and Ivanovic. I'm prob about 60-70 points better off with the choice I made. If you're doing well currently I wouldn't rec you cut RVP but if u need to make up some ground its something you should REALLLLLLY consider.

RVPless as a differential is a fair tactic for the reason's you suggested. Again this is a different argument all together and in your position at the time it was clearly the right decision.

Right now for me I'm relatively happy with where I am at 45K. Although its necessary to stay ahead of the curve. Many are dropping RVP but sticking may be a more prudent option perhaps? at least for one more week anyway.

If I had him I wouldn't cut him before a home game to stoke. Stoke have been really luck so far not to conceded alot more goals and Man u can be the team to dish out the treatment. Timing is everything in FPL and I think the time to drop him was after the Southhampton game. He has now gone through his semi drought and with Rooney back to help with the supply its pretty scary to not have him or Rooney in my team.

I don't think fergi will bench him against stoke as he can find space that someone like Welbeck won't and vs a tight defence thats very badly needed. Hernandez will be flying further and is much smaller so he's way more likely to be rested over RVP. Rooney seems to be playing in CAM now so RVP is like 95% to start that game imo.

It's interesting if you look at Rickie Lambert's stats last year in the Championship. He scored 27 goals in 42 appearances which is impressive. But if you break it down he had 4 hat-tricks and 3 braces. That's 12 goals from 4 games and 6 goals from 3 games.

That amounts to 18 goals in 7 games. SEVEN games! So that means he scored 9 goals in the other 9 games. Altogether that means he scored in 16 out of the total of 42 games...not bad of course but that's 26 games he did not score in.

So, despite his 27 goals, they only came from 16 games while he fired blanks in 26 games.

And here's another interesting thing...9 of those goals were penalties which is quite a lot. So that's 18 goals in total from open play.

So far he has done very well but I think this information might pose some interesting questions about how consistent he will be getting goals. I think he might be quite explosive but maybe not completely reliable to score most games. Food for thought anyway.

To be honest I was being a bit unfair on Lambert the way I wrote this...it's still points towards him being a great player to own...and if I had him I'd keep faith...I just think he probably thrives against certain opposition because of his strength and probably dominates certain games. His strength is definitely his biggest asset and peno duties. I just was doing a bit of personal research because I might get him in soon. Swansea onwards there looks a great time.

As I said above, I think he is probably at his best against certain kinds of opposition when he can utilise his strengths but he's possibly also just as useful at doing the dirty work like holding up the ball and being a menace.

      Nice analysis, Mart.

Plus the thing that would worry me the most is his positioning. He drifts everywhere on the pitch, comes too deep, collects the ball and sprays it around ... He'd score a lot more if he stayed in the box more often. His average position in the Fulham game is, rather shockingly, deeper than that of Rodriguez, Puncheon AND Lallana, which probably explains why he drew a blank.

Thanks, Yeah I think you're right...if he did stay up in the box there's no doubt he'd bag more goals but it's obvious it seems that he's a very well-rounded player and performs other duties than just banging goals in. While this is admirable it means that it might be disappointing from an FPL point of view for consistent returns...plus he needs to be doing all this extra stuff if Southampton are to grind out results. It's obvious so far that most players on that team can scores goals...nearly every defender has got one (Even Hooiveld at the other end!) But you also have Ramirez, Lallana and Puncheon all capable of scoring.

This is good info but he is 6 mil for a reason. If he was an elite striker with a proven record in the prem his price would reflect that. I'm sure alot of players accumilate their points that way e.g Bale. You gonna have to deal with quite a few 2s over the season but if you hold them for long enough it will all even out.

He's a risky captain in that respect but the explosiveness (if he's capable of it in the Premier League) means that for good fixtures he could be a brilliant captain as a differential. I'd say he has a few braces in him or hat-trick possibly.

I was in the same position when I w/c'd 3 weeks back. He's still maintained his form and acquiring good pts.

The reason I got rid of him was Baines, pure and simple.

My gut feeling is that Ivan won't go on getting these returns particularly with the harder fix.

Personally, all you need is Baines and four ubers. Vert hasn't shown much value as yet.

You're not looking at the bigger picture.

Ubers aren't about cost-cutting or losing value: they serve to add value in other areas of the team where the scoring is more heavily weighted.

For the sake of playing 2 ubers each week allows me 7 heavy hitters:

Fos/Beg, Baines, Mata, Cazza, Bale, RVP and Tevev.

I'd rather have these players in my team than a 5.9 defender that isn't providing many cs with a 3-4 ppg return.

It's all about the whole team. Always.

not a wc team. just took -4 hit. and i'd rather keep demel even though he's injured. the reason for that is i will almost always 99% play baines, ivan and rafa. so i don't really need any cheap rotatable defenders, and west ham are pretty decent at home.

Berba should be fit by the next gameweek.

The team linked does not have Pienaar. Posting your entire WC team would probably be a better idea.

Nitin has it right...read above. Britton, Taarabt and company arent even close to being nailed on and Di Santo will get you 2 points most weekends.

Gorkss, Hughes, Britton to save cash (will do the same as Clyne, Hangeland and Guthrie, but cheaper).

well nobody this weekend since nobody will be playing this weekend, but the week AFTER bench Begovic because United wont miss another penalty, and Stoke wont get a clean sheet. West Brom at home could pose us/City problems and I can easily see another draw, regardless of how we smashed Sunderland.

Tinkering Bobby will completely discard that line-up that won at the weekend.

It has to be next weekend. Int. Break....Bench Foster IMO. They'll both conciede, but Bego is good at saving points + bonus once in awhile

If you were told you had to pick a 3-5-2,
If you were told you had no transfers from now til THE END of the season,
Who would your five man mid be?

Mata, Bale, Silva, Cazorla, HBA for me

Absolutely and characteristically not. Newcastles fixtures are marginally better than Evertons up til around Xmas, and HBA is far more explosive, can and will take penalties, and WILL score and assist more than Pienaar. Peanut is in my team, but hes going. Baines is all the Everton I want from here out (cant afford to blow 9m soon on Jelly). newcastle even have an easier run in than Everton later on in the season. Then again...........ANC/ACN....ba and Cisse bye bye. HBA all day for me though.

Demps over Bale sneaky. Kagawa no thank you (assuming though you would have no RVP and Kags as United cover). Valencia for Kags, and Nolan for Pienaar, and id say uber like.

    (Dyer+Barfa --> Santi+Sterling)

    Foster, Bego
    Baines, Gallas, Saylor, Hughes, Demel
    Hazard, Bale, Santi, Pienaar, Sterling
    Tevez, Ba, Lambert

1.9 in the bank, with potential hit to bring in Suarez or Berba(C), as don't fancy anyone this week atm.

nope, Baines & Ivanovic play everyweek
3 cheap defenders rotate well for 3rd spot, you must be sure one of them has home/good fixture every week
