We sign off on Gameweek 7 by name checking Arsenal’s Spanish schemer, looking at the potentially problematic route into United’s first XI and the upturn in defensive solidity by many of the big guns…

The Player

Arsenal’s win at West Ham, played out in front of the tv cameras on Saturday evening, afforded Fantasy managers the opportunity to run the rule over the Gunners’ assets ahead of a trip to Norwich next time out. While Arsene Wenger’s side impressed by coming back from a one-goal deficit to end the hosts unbeaten home run, there was little doubt as to the game’s chief protagonist.

Dictating the visitors’ play from his role in “the hole”, Santi Cazorla was simply a class apart. Offering a constant goal threat and providing opportunities aplenty for his team mates, the little Spaniard’s performance backed up our own ICT Index, where he leads the way after the first seven Gameweeks of the season.

After a couple of opening blank Gameweeks, the summer signing from Malaga is turning into one of the most consistent Fantasy performers around right now. Cazorla has now scored or assisted in four of his last five appearances, averaging seven FPL points per game from the Gameweek 3 trip to Liverpool onwards, while in the Sky Sports game, he has already received three Man of the Match awards.

While many FPL managers had considered Gervinho as an Arsenal midfield alternative due to his cheaper price and out of position role as a lone frontmen, the Ivorian’s shift to the flank last weekend saw his stock take a significant dip. Gervinho cut a frustrated figure out wide, as Olivier Giroud took the opportunity to notch his first league goal for the Gunners – Cazorla’s position as the main instigator of the Gunners’ attacking moves is nailed-on, by comparison.

With a trip to Norwich and a couple of home games against QPR and Fulham in the next four, the bandwagon is already picking up speed. Budgets are being juggled, squads reassembled, as Fantasy managers attempt to find space in our five-man midfields for a player who is starting to look irresistible for many.

The Team

A 3-0 win at Newcastle produced United’s first away clean sheet of the season, with Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra and Tom Cleverley the goalscorers. While that’s all good and well for Sir Alex Ferguson, from a Fantasy perspective, the Red Devils are proving to be a real headache right now. United, clearly, have plenty of Fantasy potential – top scorers with 17 goals under their belt already, they have scored two or more times per game since the 1-0 opening defeat at Everton.

In midfield, Shinji Kagawa was subbed off midway through the second-half yet again – the fifth time in a row this has happened – while Nani failed to make the squad entirely. Antonio Valencia could, perhaps, offer us an alternative – back in the squad despite his manager ruling him out earlier in the week, he climbed off the bench at the Sports Direct Arena and comes back into contention, having provided assists in his last two starts.

Wayne Rooney’s recent to the starting XI for the first time since Gameweek 1 also muddied the Fantasy waters around Old Trafford way. Starting alongside Robin Van Persie up top for the first time in the league, he stole the limelight with a pair of assists and maximum bonus; a worrying sign for the Dutchman’s owners, with sales of the former Arsenal skipper beginning to pick up after a single goal in the last four Gameweeks. Faith in Van Persie will surely remain strong but with Rooney coming in at 11.7 in FPL and Van Persie price at 13.5, the option to free up budget and strengthen elsewhere is suddenly becoming that little bit more tempting.

The Talking Point

Without a single clean sheet between them in the opening six Gameweeks, City, Liverpool and Spurs all finally produced the goods last weekend. Investment at the back has mainly been restricted to Leighton Baines and the nailed-on Chelsea contingent, with United’s Rafael perhaps staking a case for inclusion, too, but, as the season begins to finally settle down, are we seeing a resurgence in defensive solidity from the main protagonists at last?

With United also nullifying Newcastle’s threat on Sunday afternoon, this means that four of last season’s top six defences (in terms of goals conceded) all produced the goods. With Chelsea on the verge of a tricky run of fixtures, Roberto Di Matteo’s side could be hard pushed to maintain a record that has seen them concede a mere four goals thus far – Branislav Ivanovic owners will surely hold firm but last weekend’s results hint that the Serbian may have a fight on his hands to remain at the top of the FPL defenders rankings if the pattern continues.

Surprisingly, defenders have been the top scoring FPL players in five of the first seven Gameweeks of the 2012/12 campaign. Ivanovic, Angel Rangel, Alexander Buttner, Ashley Cole and Aleksandar Kolarov have shown that the men at the back are more than capable of racking up significant scores, with only two forwards – Carlos Tevez and Luis Suarez breaking this somewhat unexpected run. With a new-found resilience possibly on the cards for a handful of new contenders, investment at the back could become a priority for many over the next fortnight as we begin to reassess our squads and plan for the upcoming Gameweeks.

    Morning all

Got 12.5m(ish) to spend on a couple of midfielders. Simple question. Spend it on who ?

Very slightly tempted by the following 8 pointer:

    Cech/Michu/Hazard -> Begovic/Bale/Cazorla.

Can only afford it by 0.1, so not for long!

The reason I"m primarily put off is that Michu has such a nice fixture this week. Thoughts from the DeadZone?

Pointless doing the Michu > Bale one. In fact all round just really not worth an 8 point hit AT ALL.

After this week, Michu -> Bale would be good though. And I want Begovic in eventually.

But I'll probably just do Hazard -> Cazorla.

DO NOT do. Hazard to Cazorla and leave it.

Its your team so you can do what you like with it to be honest with you. If thats the team you want for GW9 but won't be able to afford it otherwise then just get it and be happy.

This game is all about luck anyway so you never know until you try it. Sometimes 8 point hits work, most times they don't, but you won't know which camp yours will fall into unless you do it.

Hi gents. Please help a clueless new player

    I have 2 FT

If i downgrade lescott > rafa and schezny> gazzaniga
This allows me a grand total of £6.9 to swap kaca for.
Im thinking walters (hit) or maybe you have other ideas?

Of course eventually ill buy cech and just play him all season.

    Thoughts please

The 3 changes would give me:

      Vorm / gazza

      Rafa / Baines / Rangel / Figuoera / Gorkss

      Hazard / Bale / Fellaini / Walters / Guthrie

      Torres / Ba / Suarez

With enough money to Guthrie > Sterling later

        Your defence needs some work!

Rangel and Figuoera need to go. Perhaps bring in Jenkinson and Demel.

That way you can either upgrade your keepers or upgrade Walters.

I can forsee in the near future that i would swap figuorea for a cheapie and do rangel> sagna.

Im only keeping suarez for next week. Then will sell for berbatov and looking to upgrade DEF/fellaini.

    Cazorla, Bale, Michu, Pienaar (Guthrie)
    Rvp, Tevez, Berbatov

Was a little bored last night so i ended up doing a break up of my points to see who is performing for me. Results showed the my decent overall score is because i have invested a decent amount in my defence and they have repaid with consistent returns there. These scores are without (c) points and make of this what you may, but i feel investing a little in defence is underrated around these parts. I am going to maintain this throughout the gameweek, i suggest you do the same. Its much easier if you start early.

    Defence - 27 + 22 + 13 + 19 + 29 + 10 + 22 = 142 (34%)
    Mid - 36 + 31 + 19 + 15 + 12 + 13 + 30 = 156 (38%)
    Forwards - 26 + 22 + 31 + 6 + 15 + 9 + 9 = 118 (28%)

Also Martin, good work on the Lambert analysis.

after 7 GWs, average points scored, average price and average value:

          Def: 3,6pts 6,2£ 0,57pts/£
          Mid: 5,3pts 7,8£ 0,68pts/£
          Fwd: 5,14pts 8,1£ 0,64pts/£

defenders scoring least, costing least, no suprise there. but i thought they were the best value. seems to be worst in my case (i blame kolarov on that, and reina).

      Most weeks you played with 2 strikers, 5 mids and 3 defenders. So really with all players being equal. the Average starting point should be;

      4 Def - (36%) including GK
      5 Mid - (45%)
      2 Forwards - (18%)

So... that means clearly your forwards are the best to invest in

Hazard already looks like a flat track bully. Santi looks fixture proof. Look at Chelsea's upcoming games and then look at Arsenals.

Hazard to Cazorla makes good sense.

Morning lads I've been doing a little research and I'm going to tell some of you what you already know others will be hesitantly in agreement and the rest will disagree.
We're approaching 20% of games played - that's one fifth of the season even !
And after analysing the overall Top 10 in the competition ( and even as far as top 20 ) - very few if any have Rvp, this is cementing my belief that it's time unfortunately to move him on ,
In a nutshell Rvp out gives you a decent front 8 and a formidable back line thus when Robin scores highly you will have points elsewhere to offset him , and in fact you'll probably have built up a lead on your rivals anyway who continue to carry him.
Rvp out gives you a more balanced team, more flexibility and less 'Fillers' in your team ,
IMO and I say this with great sadness - " I think you better leave right now " 🙂

Yes, but a 5th of the season is not a great heard stick. - balance of fixtures etc.

I had my worst week in my history (ever) last gw but... Altho team needs little bit of surgery I am keeping Robin.

I think united look more creative now with Rooney off him, also I am not sure what other forwards I really want.

I am even thinking how can I shoe horn aguero in (for tevez?) to go with him... And keep Ba.

        no not impossible
but u will need to have one of the 4.0 keepers
and 3 4.0 (or max 1 4.5 defender) and make sure u rotate well
there are many affordable players in midfield for reasonable money like michu ben arfa gaston ramirez sterling who will do very well in the coming weeks

he offers security and thats why i will keep him
you know he's not gonna go on a 5 games run without scoring
he will not do a torres
he will not have a row with the manager an hr before the game and get droppped by the team
and u know he's not gonna do a demba ba last season

The top 10 or even 20 is not a fair reflection of the season that is still to come. A poor analysis that only suggests players who have done well in the past who may have had good fixtures etc.

^^this. a grear read, indeed. However, a further analysis would improve the article and findings, i.e out of the 26 games that he fired blanks, how many games did he start? did he last 90 minutes? does he experienced any cup competition hangover? also, from the 16 games that he has scored, how many were home and away games? that may benefit us Lambert owners a little more.

      just my 2cents.

Yeah its a funny one really. Those who are selling Hazard now are doing it for the same reason basing it on fixtures rather than form. With Michu its slightly different because he has less competition in the Swansea camp in terms of goal involvement so is always a good bet. I am very tempted to keep especially as few big hitters appear to be an option right now.

That is a hard call really. Sunderland should start providing more chances but so far it just hasn't happened. Whereas Lambert is still the main man for the Saints although will the loss of Ramirez affect Saints attack?

Find a way to get Baines. Downgrading Hazard or Suarez could afford you that option. I don't think Pog or Wisdom are good options in your team either.

What's wrong with Wisdom? I seriously think he'll be first choice.

Think wisdom is only in as Kelly is injured n Enrique was just back from injury so hard to see wisdom ahead of Enrique

Rodgers doesn't like Enrique at all, and Wisdom has come in and done well. He's still behind Kelly, but he's out for ages. I expect him to keep the RB role.

Jafa or any one else, how would you look to invest 4.2m in my team. Not sure on the best way to spend the money or transfers wisely. I have cash that I don't know how to use for the moment.

    Foster, Begovic
    Baines, Gallas, Clark, Davies, DEMEL
    Cazorla, Bale, Pienaar, Sterling, MICHU
    Berbatov, RVP, LAMBERT

    1FT 4.2m

Those in caps could go at some point but perhaps not yet although currently I have to start Gallas at home to Chelsea so I could possibly do with upgrading Demel, but to who? or should I just save the transfer for now.

No CHS stands out particularly if you take the view that they will be near the top of the tree. I would do Michu->Mata in 2 weeks.

The other option is Tevez from berbs. esp with the better Citeh fix.

Cheers Jafa. Chelsea and particularly city cover is something I will be looking at. Its just a matter of how. Not too keen to sell Berb with his stats.

Yeah Lambert to Tevez is a very serious option for me. I may just give Lambert one more week to prove his worth, ditto tevez.

Ha, I was considering Richards a little earlier. I'd love a city defender but they are all under the threat of rotation and I'm not sure I'm daring enough to predict Mancini's lineup for the next 5 or so fixtures.

Actually I really want Cazorla and Berb for this GW. Morrison will face City. and I have no choice but to move out RVP in this case... ARrr... I think I will just leave like that and captain RVP and will pray for the best. 😉

This is a little more radical than I would normally contemplate, but I kinda like it:

    Out: RVP, Fellaini, Davies
    In: Berbatov, Bale, Rafael
4pt hit, cash for future surgery

    Thoughts?

+1 Fellaini will score soon. Davies has a chance of CS this week and RVP can score hatrick anytime. 😀

Don't do that! RVP can score hatrick anytime against any team. Fellaini will score goal. Davies has a Chance for CS this week.
And Bale face Chelsea and Rafael will be rotation threat soon. I love to bring in Berb only but I think can wait. May be if you dare, just do RVP to Berb move without taking any hit
