We sign off on Gameweek 7 by name checking Arsenal’s Spanish schemer, looking at the potentially problematic route into United’s first XI and the upturn in defensive solidity by many of the big guns…

The Player

Arsenal’s win at West Ham, played out in front of the tv cameras on Saturday evening, afforded Fantasy managers the opportunity to run the rule over the Gunners’ assets ahead of a trip to Norwich next time out. While Arsene Wenger’s side impressed by coming back from a one-goal deficit to end the hosts unbeaten home run, there was little doubt as to the game’s chief protagonist.

Dictating the visitors’ play from his role in “the hole”, Santi Cazorla was simply a class apart. Offering a constant goal threat and providing opportunities aplenty for his team mates, the little Spaniard’s performance backed up our own ICT Index, where he leads the way after the first seven Gameweeks of the season.

After a couple of opening blank Gameweeks, the summer signing from Malaga is turning into one of the most consistent Fantasy performers around right now. Cazorla has now scored or assisted in four of his last five appearances, averaging seven FPL points per game from the Gameweek 3 trip to Liverpool onwards, while in the Sky Sports game, he has already received three Man of the Match awards.

While many FPL managers had considered Gervinho as an Arsenal midfield alternative due to his cheaper price and out of position role as a lone frontmen, the Ivorian’s shift to the flank last weekend saw his stock take a significant dip. Gervinho cut a frustrated figure out wide, as Olivier Giroud took the opportunity to notch his first league goal for the Gunners – Cazorla’s position as the main instigator of the Gunners’ attacking moves is nailed-on, by comparison.

With a trip to Norwich and a couple of home games against QPR and Fulham in the next four, the bandwagon is already picking up speed. Budgets are being juggled, squads reassembled, as Fantasy managers attempt to find space in our five-man midfields for a player who is starting to look irresistible for many.

The Team

A 3-0 win at Newcastle produced United’s first away clean sheet of the season, with Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra and Tom Cleverley the goalscorers. While that’s all good and well for Sir Alex Ferguson, from a Fantasy perspective, the Red Devils are proving to be a real headache right now. United, clearly, have plenty of Fantasy potential – top scorers with 17 goals under their belt already, they have scored two or more times per game since the 1-0 opening defeat at Everton.

In midfield, Shinji Kagawa was subbed off midway through the second-half yet again – the fifth time in a row this has happened – while Nani failed to make the squad entirely. Antonio Valencia could, perhaps, offer us an alternative – back in the squad despite his manager ruling him out earlier in the week, he climbed off the bench at the Sports Direct Arena and comes back into contention, having provided assists in his last two starts.

Wayne Rooney’s recent to the starting XI for the first time since Gameweek 1 also muddied the Fantasy waters around Old Trafford way. Starting alongside Robin Van Persie up top for the first time in the league, he stole the limelight with a pair of assists and maximum bonus; a worrying sign for the Dutchman’s owners, with sales of the former Arsenal skipper beginning to pick up after a single goal in the last four Gameweeks. Faith in Van Persie will surely remain strong but with Rooney coming in at 11.7 in FPL and Van Persie price at 13.5, the option to free up budget and strengthen elsewhere is suddenly becoming that little bit more tempting.

The Talking Point

Without a single clean sheet between them in the opening six Gameweeks, City, Liverpool and Spurs all finally produced the goods last weekend. Investment at the back has mainly been restricted to Leighton Baines and the nailed-on Chelsea contingent, with United’s Rafael perhaps staking a case for inclusion, too, but, as the season begins to finally settle down, are we seeing a resurgence in defensive solidity from the main protagonists at last?

With United also nullifying Newcastle’s threat on Sunday afternoon, this means that four of last season’s top six defences (in terms of goals conceded) all produced the goods. With Chelsea on the verge of a tricky run of fixtures, Roberto Di Matteo’s side could be hard pushed to maintain a record that has seen them concede a mere four goals thus far – Branislav Ivanovic owners will surely hold firm but last weekend’s results hint that the Serbian may have a fight on his hands to remain at the top of the FPL defenders rankings if the pattern continues.

Surprisingly, defenders have been the top scoring FPL players in five of the first seven Gameweeks of the 2012/12 campaign. Ivanovic, Angel Rangel, Alexander Buttner, Ashley Cole and Aleksandar Kolarov have shown that the men at the back are more than capable of racking up significant scores, with only two forwards – Carlos Tevez and Luis Suarez breaking this somewhat unexpected run. With a new-found resilience possibly on the cards for a handful of new contenders, investment at the back could become a priority for many over the next fortnight as we begin to reassess our squads and plan for the upcoming Gameweeks.

What are peoples thoughts on the Arsenal defence?

With Sagna nearing a return, and Gibbs withdrawing from the England Squad, what is the best value route in?

Will Jenkinson keep his place for a while? I dont really want to spend the money on Verm.

Too hard to call for now. Once Sagna returns to the starting team he will be the best option. He may get eased into action though.

Thats my thought. Im considering bringing him in (not until just before deadline) as if he plays, he will be an nice differential.

How long before he returns do you think? I see he is playing in the under 21s.

Gibbs has done very well forward lately, but Bacardi was a train going on the flank before his injury spree...

The problem with not having RVP is not having someone who scores when he wants. Let me represent this with a simple hypothetical scenario:

    *checks FPL forwards*

    FW's: Scores-when-playing-a-cr*p-team // Scores-when-you-bench-him // Scores-when-he-wants

    *Makes 'Scores-when-he-wants' (c)

    🙂

Now look at this other hypothetical scenario:

    Scores-when-least-expected // Scores-when-you-transfer-him-out // Scores-own-goal-just-to-spite-you

    WHO TO CAPTAIN?

    KOLAROV??

    🙁

I will be captaining RVP every week. I captained him every week starting from GW 3 or so. But the only problem with RVP is that he is about 99 % sure to be benched against easy teams and will come for a one pointer. 🙁

I think it's more than just the fact that he scores when he wants, it's also the fact that he plays for a team that scores goals! Last season the two Manchester teams scored 88 and 86 goals each the next highest was 20 goals back and most scored less than half.
RVP is the primary goal scorer for a team that will score 4 goals for every 2 or 3 of any other team. That's all there is to it, I'm keeping him.

Of course you are! Is that driven by the fpl head to head updates? I assumed it was controlled by a council member pressing a button since as far as I know the league hasn't actually been set up in the fpl site.

Well you might do ok this season abiding by that...I'm happy to own Ba while he fires them in personally! I also like Newcastle since they got relegated, their team is likable now...I gotta admit I didn't like em much back in the day...but I'm warming to the likes of Ba/Cisse/Cabaye/Barfa...quality team. why on earth is Mancini rotating the City defence like he's changing his socks? its not like it's doing them any good.. they still lost at Real, held by Dortmund, and only kept a clean sheet for the first time in the League. I'd swear if other teams have Kolarov, that guy will play week in, week out, only to take freekicks and put them in. It's only Clichy btw, that Serbian can play superbly in midfield if he is asked to do so.

+1, wouldn't you love to have loralov in your team every week - Did you notice this weeks highest score had loralov (20 pts) as first sub and guess who didn't play For him .. Kompany !
And to top it off I played Giggs Boson in a H2H and he also had loralov , (destroyed me 🙁 )

Kolarov is not better than Clichy. Clichy is the best left back at City bar none. Truly hilarious. Kolarov is mistake prone and slow. Clichy when in form is absolutely fantastic, as was proven last season on the way to the title. Left mid is another discussion though as Kolarov looks suited to the position and he CAN play left back very well but Clichy is and will be first choice in the long run you'll see.

It depends on the formation. If they play 3 CB's then Kolarov will play in a more advanced wing back role. If Citeh play a flat 4 then Clichy will play.

my prediction is maicon - richards - kompany - kolarov for the long run. unfortunately they have tough group for UCL, so they couldn't field the likes of nastasic, toure etc. as they have play the big boys for the big European nights. Zab will rotate with Maicon, Richards with Lescott, and Clichy can go back to France. haha

    thoughts people.....

    seriously considering this?

currently have a front 7 consisting of:
Ben Arfa / Hazard / Yaya Toure / Santi Cazorla
Van Persie / Fletcher / Lambert

Have 2 free transfers and was thinking:
Yaya - Bale / Van Persie - Aguero - Berbatov for a 4pt hit (will have 0m left so will have to do today)

Then next week changing Hazard to Mata

With the money gained from that transfer I was planning to upgrade either Demel-Gallas or Cuellar - Risse??

my main reasoning for doing it now is that I probably wont be able to afford Bale tomorrow never mind next week?

actually if I do the Yaya - Bale and Hazard -Mata subs next week then I should be good for money, just have less to upgrade the defense the following week, but should still be ok.

Last page HVT made some good points about the top 20 in FPL being largely RVP-less. But what we don't know is whether, as a general rule, the top 20 in the first 7 weeks finish anywhere near the top at the end of the season. Playing without RVP would have been seen as a risky move at the start of this season. Those who went without him were taking chances, and risks like that WILL come off for some people. Another thing we don't know is what percentage of RVP-less teams are near the bottom of the rankings. The risk surely worked for some (who happened to pick the players who have scored so far) and not for others. The real question is whether people who made that risky move will have it come back to haunt them.

Bottom line: I would expect risk-takers to be at the top of the standings early iin the season (just as a corresponding set of risk-takers will be at the bottom, that is the nature of risk), but I wonder if they will be there at the end.

My question is will RVP start the next match home to Stoke after an international break. If he doesn't I see no real reason to keep him in my team and will pull the trigger right now. If he does, then I wait one more week.

      Thoughts??

Well, yeah, that is my more immediate problem! 🙂

I think the title race is really important to SAF and he will want every point he can get (especially with City facing a nicer run of fixtures). He will have noted Liverpool's inability to unlock Stoke and will want every advantage he can have. So I would expect him to be planning to play him. However, I',m sure he will be watching how much work RVP does in the international fixtures, so that is what I will be watching too.

It is my opinion that the current top 20 persay are very good players , I accept an element of luck but strategy plays a more important role - I believe a lot or these guys have avoided Rvp on the grounds that the balance and fabric of their team is better, and so far it has paid off , a lot of these guys IMO will finish in the top 10 k if they keep up their intensity ,
In fact I've often wondered are we on here guilty of over-thinking , over-playing even being swayed by unproven opinions on here to our detriment ?
Is the casual guy sippin a beer on a Friday night with a decent amount of knowledge and watching Motd1/2 as well off ?

That last question is a whole other thread. People keep saying this game is ultimately, or mainly, or all (take your pick) luck. If that is true, why do we do all this stuff? Clearly we do not think it is all luck. I don't. We probably DO overthink it at times, which is why I am losing RVP as soon as either he lets me down one too many times or I need the cash to field a team I am confident in, regardless of prognistications or theories. But I also know that when I started using this site, listening to advice, and applying data and analysis to my decisions my FPL performance went to another level entirely. It is not mainly luck, but luck is a strong factor. That is why I will not make decisions based on who happens to be on top at the moment, because I suspect a fair amount of luck selects those players early on. I prefer to make decisions based on the advice of some of the people around here who have a strong track record of success year after year.

I have a feeling he will be starting every game. Whats the point in resting him when Chelsea and City are winning? Uniteds midfield and defence is in tatters, whens the last time they started without a winger?

Consistency is the key to success. In the long run I believe RVP will outscore all the other strikers. And those RVP lesser will not be able to bring him in bcoz of his high prize. If you own RVP, just try to hold on to him and he will award you for your faith. You should even captain him every week and he will not let you down.! 😀

      Thank you EJ ,
I'm now of the belief that going forward without Rvp is the way . I really believe that even if Rvp has a run of good game weeks the quality that you will have without him will offset his high scores.
Put simply he's just too expensive.

I really do see your point. I am right on the edge myself. For me it comes down to the fact that I can field a team that looks like scoring even with RVP. One or two more disappointments from RVP, or a week or two where I feel more money spent somewhere else would have made the difference, and RVP is down the road feelin' bad. 😉

The top 2 are there mainly because they had Suarez captain when he scored his hattrick.
That doesn't mean everyone should have Suarez.
If RVP scores a hattrick, the leaderboard will then be made up of people who had RVP as captain, or probably had Suarez for his hattrick and had RVP for his hattrick. When you're in the top .0001%, you need to follow a critical path of transferring in players just as their about to hit form and transfer out players just as they're about to lose form.
I wouldn't use the leaderboard for guidance on strategy, they've hit the right choices up until this point, there's no guarantee they'll do so in the future.

YEs, it is the same as I am thinking. If you Captain RVP and if he scores three goals in that gw. you will surely be ranking up very high after that gw. It will happen soon. note my words and you see this here first. 😀

People keep mentioning this "RVP isn't in any of the top teams" fact as though it's in some way surprising - he's only the 5th highest scoring striker at the moment, I assume the top teams are all Tevez, Torres, cheap 3rd option up front. Without looking I'd also assume they've mostly had Hazard, Cazorla, Baines, Ivanovic, etc.

The top teams have the top scoring players, it's not coincidence. If RVP scores 5 in his next 2 games, I'd bet everything I own that the majority of the top teams would be replaced by those with RVP.

Any formation needs width to be effective. I don't want to say United got lucky on sunday but 2 set pieces and a cross in the back of the net isn't going to happen every week. Also thought the ball crossed the line for Newcastle which would have changed things.

they played with no width against Everton 😉

Yeah, while Fellaini has had loads of shots and getting into positions he's just not a centre forward...he's good for his strength and aerial ability but I just don't see consistent goal-scoring which is basically what you're paying for him...otherwise he's just a very good centre mid who likes to get involved in attacking and defending and gets yellow cards.
