For the first time in the current league campaign, Sir Alex Ferguson fielded both Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie in the same starting XI for United’s trip to Newcastle last Sunday. The pair had clicked in the previous game on Champions League duty, with Rooney teeing up the Dutchman for both his side’s goals in the 2-1 win over CFR Cluj and while Van Persie failed to fire against the Magpies, Rooney continued to revel in a more withdrawn role after providing another pair of assists in the 3-0 win.

Intriguingly, this was the first time Ferguson has rolled out his new diamond formation in the league. With Michael Carrick at the base, Shinji Kagawa and Tom Cleverley played right and left respectively, while Rooney tucked in behind Van Persie and Danny Welbeck. Post-match, the United boss talked up the success of his new formation:

“I wanted to try the diamond again after some success against Cluj, which is not an easy place to go to, and against Newcastle in the Capital One Cup…We played so well on Tuesday against a decent team. People look at the name Cluj and say they expect United to win, but they are a decent side. And because we played so well on Tuesday, I thought we should find out how far we can go with that diamond system.”

Looking at United’s respective shapes over the past couple of games, there’s a significant difference. From left to right and from front to back, in particular, there are far fewer spaces in between for opponents to thrive in. Ferguson’s default 4-4-2 formation was picked apart by Spurs in the previous match, with Gareth Bale’s second for the visitors indicative of just how stretched the Red Devils can be when opponents win possession and quickly counter-attack.

United v Spurs GW6
United v Newcastle GW7

In the Tottenham match (above left), Andre Villas-Boas’ side were savvy enough to exploit the space behind Rio Ferdinand (5) and Jonny Evans (6) but Ferguson’s tactics against Newcastle (above right) saw the central defensive pairing sit deeper and nullify the home side’s threat.

Prior to Sunday’s match, United’s problems at the back meant they had opened the scoring just once in their first six matches. Back in Gameweek 4, they cruised to a 4-0 home win over Wigan and, having grabbed the lead through Jonny Evans at St James’ Park, United registered their second clean sheet of the campaign in a comfortable 3-0 triumph. With Patrice Evra adding a second soon after, the visitors established a two-goal cushion within the first 15 minutes of the Toon tussle and quickly set about dominating the match.

Maybe it was a case of sitting back and protecting their lead but there seems no doubt the system afforded the recently-maligned backline greater protection. Analysing United’s overall involvement in each of their seven league matches so far, though, there was a definite downturn in their forward forays on Sunday.

While United bossed the proceedings with 55.7% possession, only 278 of their total touches came inside the Magpies’ half – their least of the season. In three of their previous six matches, Ferguson’s side had less possession, yet in all of those fixtures they were in more advanced positions when on the ball. In the Gameweek 3 win at Southampton, they had 54.7% possession, yet 395 touches were inside the Saints’ half, while the same applies to Gameweek 4 at home to Wigan (52.2% and 340 respectively) and Gameweek 5 at Liverpool (47.8% and 307).

Looking at the final third touches, United had just 114 on Sunday – again, their lowest of the campaign. This means that just 14% of their total touches were made inside this crucial area; although they doubled this percentage in four out of the previous six matches, Ferguson was more than happy as to how his side were able to control Sunday’s match:

“The diamond closes off the midfield. The only problem is when the ball goes out wide, how far your midfield gets separated. If you try to keep it tight in the centre of the field, then the opposition have to go wide. Okay, we took a gamble today because Newcastle are so big up front and they’re good crossers of the ball. But the football we played from the central midfield positions through Cleverley, Kagawa, Rooney and Carrick was terrific.”

GW51826633.3%6
GW643749.3%12
GW71438321.4%10

Once again, the statistics back up Ferguson’s comments here. United had managed fewer crosses than their opponents in just one of the six previous matches, with Liverpool delivering 26 balls from out wide at Anfield (in comparison to the visitors’ 18) back in Gameweek 5. United produced an incredible 43 crosses against Spurs in their last home game, with Villas-Boas’ side making a mere seven, but last Sunday the situation was turned on its head.

Afforded plenty of width on the flanks, Alan Pardew’s men provided 38 crosses, with United managing a mere 14 – their lowest tally of the season. Their total of three successful crosses was also the least in any given Gameweek thus far but this equated to a 21.4% accuracy – their third highest rate of the campaign. Overall, it’s fair to say that United’s delivery from the flank has been disappointing; with only four of those 43 crosses against Spurs proving successful.

Ferguson could well be looking for a little more guile and intricacy to his team’s play. With ball-playing individuals like Kagawa and Van Persie brought on board, perhaps there’s less need for delivery into the box – United still
created 10 chances against Newcastle, with the stats above highlighting the fact that they don’t need to continually pump balls into the penalty area to provide goalscoring opportunities.

RVP Average Positions

Finally, it’s impossible to overlook the effect this new system had on Van Persie – in particular, his average position when on the ball. As the graphic highlights, the Dutchman was far deeper when on the ball in comparison to the previous six Gameweeks. While he mirrored his previous average for minutes per touch, Van Persie had just 15 touches in the final third, considerably down on his previous 24 for Gameweeks 1-6; on a more optimistic note, however, his penalty box touches (5.5 to four) weren’t too dissimilar.

Although Newcastle did well to shackle the Dutchman and reduce the former Arsenal man to a single attempt, Van Persie’s creativity took a turn for the better – he created a goalscoring opportunity every 29 minutes against Pardew’s men, well up on his average of 54.5 from his first six appearances.

While the tactical spotlight has mainly centred on Chelsea since the arrival of Eden Hazard and Oscar, United’s shift of system over these last few games certainly hints at another evolution under Ferguson. Whether it’s to protect the shaky defence or find a solution to integrate the two summer signings alongside Rooney or perhaps a combination of both, the diamond affords a definite alternative to the usual 4-4-2 and gives United another dimension to their style of play as Ferguson attempts to wrestle the title back from Roberto Mancini’s City.

Besides Lambert > Ba... they're all terrible ideas. West Broms good run of fixtures are coming to an end soon so why get Foster in now when Vorm has a home game vs Wigan? Why take Saylor out when Newc have 3 home games in 5 after the Sunderland game and why do Michu to Morrison when Michu has a home game vs Wigan and Morrison is home to City?

Kac > a guaranteed starter is what you need to do.

Currently confused between Silva and Mata. Silva got the fixtures, but he rarely involved in City goals this season. Mata on the other hand seems a better choice at better price, but his fixtures could prevent him (or Chelsea) from scoring any goals. Thought?

@Billy - just seen your reply mate. I think the safe play is to save the transfer, but Santi (nor) and Berba (AVL) could easily outscore Barfa (sun) and Tevez (wba) by more than 4 points this week. It's tricky though as I don't really want rid of Barfa and Tevez over the next 5-6 games due to their fixtures, so I'll probably play it safe and stick.

If I don't get Berba now, there could still be merit getting him in GW9 - he's cheap and has rea & EVE in the next 2, and then is a fairly easy switch to Ba in GW11. Thoughts?

It's a definite wait and see for me, Jinswick. We still don't know if Berba will play against Villa and there may well be more injuries during the break. I totally agree that Berba and Santi could easily outscore HBA and Tevez plus 4 points in GW 8, so it's up to you. Do you feel lucky?

I think I might skip Berba now, get Crouch and then swap the pair later when Fulham's fixtures pick up. He looks like a great Christmas present.

Thought for the day............ You cant have everyone , so keep the ones you have.

    Good solid players being sold

    Tevez
    Hazard
    Michu
    Van Persie

Why? Just because someone else has caught the eye? Giroud scored a goal , i know lets kick out Tevez.etc etc etc

Dont want their prices to fall , but if people are stupid enough to sell all these players then there isnt much that can be done about it.
We only have one transfer a week so cant spend points every single week just because someones price is going to fall.
I keep an eye on prices , and have built up decent team value without taking a single hit this season.

Berbatov was injured, i kept him , his price fell , but guess what all those who sold him are now buying him back , they have used two transfers on that. Plus as soon as he scores his price will rise again anyway

True but it is easy to justify, 3 of the players mentioned can give you additional funds. Also guess it depends on your belief that the players mentioned output will drop when face with difficult fixtures.
Still a good point though and I do wonder if the players that are brought in will do any better?

Yeah If I had all four I would be tempted to keep all of them. In saying that over the last two weeks I sold Tevez and Hazard. RVP and Michu are next on the chopping block depending on their performance in the coming game week.

I may sell Michu next week , due to the team being very poor lately , plus they have had all their easy fixtures.

Hazard im totally bemused why he is being sold
Young , improving , brilliant , scores goals , assists, wins penalties , dosent get booked , played every game Whats not to like?
Fixtures not that tough really they only playing teams their equal or worse , they will still score goals

Tevez - Might miss one or two games but will play the majority in the league , works hard , suited to premier league , again ui see no reason to sell , he easiest route into Man c attack

Van Persie - yes hes expensive , and if i had wild card i might make a team without him , however i have built my team around him. 3.9 defender 4.9 mid cheap goalies , so can have him and still have decent team. Again best access to manchester attack.

What i wont do is start spending points en mass to remove these quality players just because Suarez scored a hattrick , or Geroud scored his first ever premiership goal

RVP is easily the best pick in the MUN attack, but his price is so high it's tempting to downgrade for an overall better team. Valencia could be a shout if/when he's back fully fit. Tevez, Berba, Ba -> enough funds for one hell of a mid/defence.

see but the advantage here is you can rotate based on fixtures AND if you have an injury or suspension you can hold the player as you have 12 other players you're happy to play. plus if someone doesn't play you're happy with your sub off the bench

      a) grr, I have the same problem, how annoying. Hmmm, I guess it has to be the guy with the home fixture so....Foster. Although I'm very tempted by Begovic as Stoke have looked solid at the back. But have RVPc so I might as well stick with Foster.

      b) Fletcher out. Sunderland look average going forward with few chances created. In saying that Lambert may need to go out as well soon.

      c) Yeah he should be, but if not it will be interesting if Sagna and Jenkinson play as RB & LB respectively

I've noticed this too. They're hardly the nicest fixtures...in fact they're rather off-putting. And the first game back he could be rusty due to injury...he also could be injury-prone because of his age and lack of game time over the last few years.

that's my dilemma! could be rusty or not back to match fitness for his first game back and then an ugly run of fixtures

spurs and newcastle (the next two after chelsea) won't be easy games either! especially if newcastle tighten up at the back again once they have their first 11 all playing and not injured like they've had so far

AVL, rdg is a tempting set of fixtures though. but not sure its worth getting him for just two games.

The problem is swapping Fletch for another striker who has a home game seems a bit sideways since Fletch is also in good form and not carrying an injury. This is exactly my dilemma so I will be mulling over it all week!

I'd bench HBA...only because of his lack of away form lately. (All his returns have been in home games) I'm planning on benching him next week.

      Average.

I'd really want Baines in here for the form he's in right now. Caulker - rotation risk still. Double up on Stoke? Crouch and Lambert won't get you goals as regularly as some one like Jelavic or Ba. Start over.

crouch at OT is a nice punt. since the article also points that Manu will concede more crosses with the diamond formation

      No Baines = WC fail.
Williamson and Perch are just filling in for Saylor and Coloccini who should be back next week.
I don't think Caulker will keep his place after BAE returns and Vertonghen switches to CB.
Not sure about Begovic AND Wilson.

I'd say it might be 2-1 to Sunderland or 2-2

Newcastle actually look leaky in defence lately. It could be the injuries but still...

They'll both be fired up after losing 3-0 to Manchester sides!

either do mata to cazorla as a strait swap or downgrade ivanovic to say rafa or gibbs (does that give you enough?) and then upgrade yaya to cazorla

seems like a nay for me. HBA to michu is really short term, like 1 GW?
maybe you could do podolski to berbs/jelly instead and upgarde to carzola?
pods might get the points but he seems to be getting subbed of alot, if ARS are winning might give way for likes of walcott chamberlain or giroud to gain confidence!

      Cheers!

    with 1.9 in the bank

have 2 transfers so have to use at least 1. obviously will wait til the end of the break in case of injuries (though not sure if i have many/any playing) but any suggestions what i should do? wondering if getting berb really makes sense (see reasoning above). want to keep michu 1 more week before shipping. dare i punt on saylor to kolorov? and this isn't just a knee jerk. I remember he was a ppg king last year! and i definitely have the defensive coverage if he doesn't play! especially considering his upcoming fixtures he could be a good bet. and how well he did last week i feel mancini may give him more starting opportunities. any alternate suggestions? and no i'm not getting rvp!

i like the kolarov punt. if mancini is stupid enough to drop the firing guy, u'd have the defensive coverage in cuellar. but does it mean u'll be playing with a back 4 regulary (baines, rafa, gibbs, kolarov)? hhmm..

sometimes 4 in the back. if you look at my squad though its strong all around as my strategy is to rotate based on fixtures so some weeks it might be 4 in the back others 3 in the back, some weeks 5 mfs some weeks 4, etc.

About Kolarov: Mancini's MO up to now indicates that he should reward Kola with more startings like he did with Dzeko. However, isn't kolarov away on international duty? I'm afraid he might get rested when he comes back.

Berba: I have only one thing to say about this great gentleman....BERBA IS CLASS! He proved himself during his time at untd.

yeahh i realized that about cazorla right after I posted. and now i realize that means no bale either. forgot spurs got 4th as they're not in CL...

Word of advice... don't knee jerk out your injured players!

It's the international break. We all remember examples of miraculous recoveries from 'long term' injuries. In many cases this is managers doing their bit to protect their players from international fixtures.

Hold tight, especially if you have fit subs!
