In recent years, Arsenal have enjoyed something of a golden age when it comes to front men. From Denis Bergkamp through Thierry Henry to Robin Van Persie, a dynasty of virtuosos has consistently carried a winning tune in harmony with, or more recently in spite of, the supporting ensemble. Never has Arsenal’s reliance on its soloist been more pronounced than last season, and few would envy the weight of expectation thrust upon new signing Olivier Giroud following Robin Van Persie’s 11th hour defection to United at the start of this campaign.

If the acquisition of master conductor Santi Cazorla and the seasonable resurgence of the much-maligned Gervinho have breathed new life into last season’s moribund backing band, Giroud’s initial contributions were conspicuously off key. Gently removed from the spotlight by Arsene Wenger in Gameweek 4, the Frenchman was eased into the fray from the bench over the ensuing clashes, and with Arsenal’s strong team performances somewhat lifting the pressure on the new arrival, Upton Park experienced a Giroud awakening in Gameweek 7.

Re-installed to centre stage against the Hammers, Wenger’s decision to shift the in-form Gervinho back to his customary berth out wide was as effective for the Gunners as it was frustrating for many Fantasy managers. With twice as many shots as his nearest Premier League competitor last week and the threat stats of a thermonuclear Chuck Norris, Giroud even achieved the minor miracle of besting Santi Cazorla in our own ICT index on his way to a goal, an assist and a full house of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points.

Whilst long-term there is the possibility that Wenger will adopt the same horses-for-courses approach with his forwards as he has with his centre backs, it seems profoundly unlikely that he would puncture Giroud’s newly inflated confidence with a return to the bench over a run of fixtures that looks rosy for Arsenal’s attacking assets (nor, QPR, mun, RDG, TOT).

Conceding nine goals in their last two games, Norwich’s newfound predilection for public incontinence will be a welcome development for Wenger’s men, and a visit from the similarly leaky QPR should present further scope for big returns the following week. A tricky trip to Old Trafford may prove a gloomy exception to the rule in Gameweek 10, but the clouds are quickly dispersed by a visit from travelsick Fulham and the home leg of a North London derby with a recent history of big scores for both sides.

With the early season template teams starting to unravel, Fantasy managers are more at liberty than ever to roll the dice with their precious front three. As we scour the markets for differentials, Giroud – priced at 8.4 in FPL and 8.7 in the Sky Sports game and with ownership of under 2% in both games – could represent a strong mid-priced alternative if he can emerge unscathed from international duty over the next week or so with Didier Deschamps’ Les Bleus.

I have a plethora of doubts and after a horrible week following an 8 point hit I'm very reluctant to do anything but wait.

    Foster (Begovic)
Baines - Rafael (Gibbs, Clyne, Demel all doubts)

Ramirez (Doubt, great punt) - Fellaini (Gotten 3 points since i brought him in, doubt) Cazorla(C) HBA - Sterling

    RVP - Jelavic - Suarez.

Save it and hope for the best? Do Fellaini - Pienaar? Get Nolan since I already have Jelavic?
Do something more fulfilling with my life?

    Thank Also Fullers ESB. you.

Fellaini > Walters and bench this week

or wait for 2FT and possibly ship out Fletcher for Crouch?

I think there are better options for strikers, but Stoke have nice fixtures and Crouch has been scoring, Walters assisting. Anyone else considering Stoke attack?

The reason I'm considering shipping Fellaini is because I already have Pienaar, I'm benching Fellaini this week anyways, so I guess I won't waste a transfer.

I doubt he'll be a constant starter, with marin starting to pickup couple of games.

I'm starting to see chelsea have 2 different way of play.
      Wideplay and through the middle.
Im guessing if its wideplay, he'll deploy players like moses, while through the middle he fields all no.10s (hazard, mata and oscar).

If you asked me a month ago, I would've said yes, but I think Jenkinson has been great in Sagnas absence. So I'm not sure he'll take away all of Jenkinsons playing time - maybe a split position is in the cards? Frustrating as I have Jenkinson!

He'll be slowly brought back in. I'd say Jenkinson's reliability will allow it to be a slow progression. Sagna is too good to be not starting once fully fit however. I'd say he will rotate between them in Champions league/cup competitions a bit. But because of Sagna's injury I don't think he'll be thrust back into things too quickly.

If I was in this position I would consider a sideways switch to Pienaar, who you have. I would get Nolan short term for next few. Maybe look to move on as WHams fixtures get tough. But they got goals in them so Nolan is a good long option.

Walters isnt for me, I just dont fancy Stoke to deliver any consitent attacking returns both away and at home. I am looking to double on their defence however. Morrison or Nolan for me.

        B) Main creative mid in that team right now

If that transfer has to be made then Nolan is a good option. Maybe wait until Monday to hear the full prognosis on Fellaini?. Who knows he might only miss one gameweek or, even better, start the QPR game. Fellaini is still a good long term option IMHO, as I think Moyes will still look to play him upfront, esp with Gibson coming back.

Just starting this week so still playing jigsaw puzzle with the team. I'm fairly certain though that it will contain Suarez & Berbatov, both promising captain candidates. Still there is some uncertainty with Berbatov, & Suarez against Reading is the kind of game that he should deliver but somehow I fear, without justification, that he can really dissapoint here (e.g., 0 goal and a yellow card).

I'm just looking for an alternative really & maybe ponder & eventually only decide just before the deadline.

        What about your captain's choice?

Crazy!... All these injuries before the Internationals have really kicked off. To me (not just as a Saints fan) the dead leg to Ramirez was a real crab in the pubes. The supply to good a good diff aka the Lambert wagon-roller will have its consequences.

Said it was just a dead leg and I've had many of them--but a stay in hospital with a huge swelling and nowhere for the blood to go says internal bleeding is a more accurate description.

Not available to his inter. team and at least 1 month out is the most info I can get at the mo. Good luck Saints that's a killer. We need to show what we're really made of now.

So, I have a dilemma: it seems clear now that Santi Cazorla is going to be an important player in FPL this year and given Arsenal's form and fixtures I'd belatedly like to buy him.

Unfortunately this means losing one of Mata, Silva or Bale. All three have their advantages ( Mata - form, Silva - fixtures, Bale - high points ceiling ) but also disadvantages ( Mata- fixtures, Silva - form, Bale - unpredictable ).

I could actually buy Santi in GW 9 and have all four but that would mean selling Suarez and having an attack of Berbatov, RVP and Lambert, which I don't fancy at all.

In my place, which one would you lose?

A fixture like that is tempting for Sterling but I'd be reluctant to bench Lambert as he's always more likely to score than Sterling. That defender dilemma isn't too nice. Wilson on Stoke's good defensive form but Gorkss might grab a surprise goal. The only reason I'd sway towards Gorkss is because I want Man Utd to hammer Stoke 3/4-0 because I have RVP.

The Rdg game is the kind of an ideal fixture to play cheapie option like Sterling I think. Although given the option, I'd still play Lambert. IMO, despite their clean sheets and Allardyce's reputation, West Ham still looks somehow vulnerable in the back for me (as we already see with the mistakes Collins have made).

For the 2nd question, I'd play Gorkks and may the posts be with you !

Reading will be keeping it tight against Liverpool and their best chance for a goal is probably set pieces...Gorkss will be up for those so it's not a bad decision over Wilson who will likely just concede and not score.

Indeed. I have a feeling that it will be a very tight game. I remember watching Reading playing away against Everton in an FA cup tie in 2011. They were quite battered, but still nicked it 1 - 0. A deja vu I sense here....

Never bench a live striker for a budget MFer who only has an assist to his name so far. Thats like rule 1 of FPL. People tend to over think this game and usually end up crying come sunday night.

Trouble with Saints is they won't give G Rod a good run of Striker/ instead of Lambert.

Everyone knows Lam. doesn't last 90 mins and wilts like a daisy; but Saints are so hung up on his height advantage and someone to aim at cause he's done the biz so many times .

But It's time to but our faith in J. Rod and play him where he belongs. If things don't work, bring Lam on as an impact sub. which isn't too far away anyhow IMO. J Rod was Saints record signing till Ramirez I don't think it's too long till he gets the faith to oust Lambert to the bench.

Everything being said about Cazorla now is exactly the same as you were all saying about Hazard just a few weeks ago. Remember the Bale in/out saga? How long til you're all rushing to get Cazorla out for Silva/Dempsey/Oscar/anyone else? Having said that, I've had Caz since the start and can't imagine ever transferring him out unless he gets injured, so I'm probably just being bitter now that you've all cottoned on haha

Personally I was well aware of Cazorla's talents but decided to get Giroud for GW1 thinking he'd be the main striker and not many people had got him. Retrospectively it was far too early and was a disaster...however now a lot are considering him for the exact reasons I did originally. It's just about timing. I'd say you were sweating after 2 GW's and no goals for Arsenal for instance.

I can't ever see anyone doing Cazorla > Oscar...the level of Cazorla's influence is worth his price and only Silva out of the players you've listed would be a viable alternative to Cazorla in terms of heavy influence creatively as a midfielder. Dempsey might come good...but with Bale being around it's hard to jump on board that ship too eagerly.

My point is that anything can happen in football, and it happens fast. On here people seem to react very quickly and without much thought... If Oscar were to have 2 or 3 impressive GWs in a row while Caz scored a few 2s I could see that sort of shit being discussed. I bet in a few GWs a lot of people will be trying to fit RVP back in to their teams... seen it all before. Impulsivity rarely pays off in FPL, thats pretty much the main thing I've learned so far

Had Caz for a few GW's now. The stats don't lie, the boy got talent.

(..I also got bale instead of hazard in GW3..)

Could be a duke off between him and Bale for top scoring mid at this rate.

I'll probably be benching Sterling as well, reluctantly. Spurs vs Chelsea as the 12:45 kick off has the look of a low-scoring game but you'd have to be brave to bench Hazard over Sterling.

I think you should leave out Hazard if you think you should leave out Hazard... but Chelsea will probably score at Spurs, so you just have to ask yourself can you see Hazard being involved in that goal?

Sterling will get an assist at best... is that worth the risk of leaving out Hazard?
