In recent years, Arsenal have enjoyed something of a golden age when it comes to front men. From Denis Bergkamp through Thierry Henry to Robin Van Persie, a dynasty of virtuosos has consistently carried a winning tune in harmony with, or more recently in spite of, the supporting ensemble. Never has Arsenal’s reliance on its soloist been more pronounced than last season, and few would envy the weight of expectation thrust upon new signing Olivier Giroud following Robin Van Persie’s 11th hour defection to United at the start of this campaign.

If the acquisition of master conductor Santi Cazorla and the seasonable resurgence of the much-maligned Gervinho have breathed new life into last season’s moribund backing band, Giroud’s initial contributions were conspicuously off key. Gently removed from the spotlight by Arsene Wenger in Gameweek 4, the Frenchman was eased into the fray from the bench over the ensuing clashes, and with Arsenal’s strong team performances somewhat lifting the pressure on the new arrival, Upton Park experienced a Giroud awakening in Gameweek 7.

Re-installed to centre stage against the Hammers, Wenger’s decision to shift the in-form Gervinho back to his customary berth out wide was as effective for the Gunners as it was frustrating for many Fantasy managers. With twice as many shots as his nearest Premier League competitor last week and the threat stats of a thermonuclear Chuck Norris, Giroud even achieved the minor miracle of besting Santi Cazorla in our own ICT index on his way to a goal, an assist and a full house of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points.

Whilst long-term there is the possibility that Wenger will adopt the same horses-for-courses approach with his forwards as he has with his centre backs, it seems profoundly unlikely that he would puncture Giroud’s newly inflated confidence with a return to the bench over a run of fixtures that looks rosy for Arsenal’s attacking assets (nor, QPR, mun, RDG, TOT).

Conceding nine goals in their last two games, Norwich’s newfound predilection for public incontinence will be a welcome development for Wenger’s men, and a visit from the similarly leaky QPR should present further scope for big returns the following week. A tricky trip to Old Trafford may prove a gloomy exception to the rule in Gameweek 10, but the clouds are quickly dispersed by a visit from travelsick Fulham and the home leg of a North London derby with a recent history of big scores for both sides.

With the early season template teams starting to unravel, Fantasy managers are more at liberty than ever to roll the dice with their precious front three. As we scour the markets for differentials, Giroud – priced at 8.4 in FPL and 8.7 in the Sky Sports game and with ownership of under 2% in both games – could represent a strong mid-priced alternative if he can emerge unscathed from international duty over the next week or so with Didier Deschamps’ Les Bleus.

13.4 is way too much for a player that might be rested once in awhile. A lot of solid great options around IMO. Might get Valencia soon for ManU cover. Just wanna see how he's gonna fit after the injury. Thanks

IMO better to have as little value as possible on the bench - presumably you consider Nolan to be 1st sub most weeks?. Also I think you're a little light upfront, and there's risk in your forwards. I would consider downgrading either Bale or Silva, to upgrade Suarez to RVP or Aguero. Not sure how the maths add up, but you get the idea.

Nolan is a 2 week punt max. Downgrading to Sterling probably afterwards.....Suarez probably will get shipped out in the next 2 or 3. Or I can replace him with Tevez next week. I prefer Tevez to Aguero. Better value IMO and I think Mancini will use Kun more in UCL this time.

It rarely makes sense to bring in a player for 1-2 weeks. Usually something happens that means you need the FT that would otherwise use to get the player out - then you're taking hits. Not good.

It's not. Trust me. What happens if RVP or Aguero suddenly hit form? You won't have that extra dough to do a quick upgrade. And imagine all those points wasted on your bench each week...

I don't like. Isn't there anything better you can do with your FT than a keeper swap and a sideways move from Hazard to Silva? If the answer is no then.....the keeper swap is good. (I guess).

International break deadzone. We can't be far away from posting teams with players whose names all start with the same letter...

Maybe before we do, does anyone fancy trying to talk me out of RVP > Berbatov for next GW? I hate 2 free transfers and no pressing issues.

I did RVP>Torres last week and it paid off...I'm sure I'll regret it soon. The cool thing is that I already have a plan to bring him back...is there anyone except for RVP that you'd be willing transfer out to get Berbs in? Other than Lamber though, your squad looks fine.

Even if I decided it would be a good option, I'm £0.8m short of Lambert > Berbatov. Got him when he was £6m.

Don't want to get rid of Tevez yet Still thing he will play most (not all) of the time and at his price I can deal with that. I could always bring RVP back if I felt the situation/my feelings on him changed, but if I didn't have him now I wouldn't target him.

You could try downgrading Michu (which I plan to do myself eventually) and bringing Berbs in for Lambert. But that depends on if you're wanting to get rid of Michu this week (which I advise against 😀 ) I dunno, a stud player like RVP for a halfway stud like Berba seems...backwards to me. Unless you consider Berbs to be more of a stud than RVP? How studly is Berbs to you then?! 😉

What is your basis for claiming RVP will score big very soon?

Also, Berbatov is a world-class player. With his style of play, I reckon he could play for any team and still score/assist.

IMO you'll have to deal with Lambert and Michu the GW after. (Ba? BArfa? Giroud?Nolan?)...sooo many options. Cheers

This site is slightly biased towards rvp.. top of the watchlist when he has bad fixtures and taken 1 shot on target in 3 games. I'm guessin the majority of the scouts are Manu fans but to suggest that " In truth, the lack of secure attacking alternatives in the United lineup helps him out as a Fantasy option: it seems unthinkable to go forward without covering United’s attacking returns" (quote: previous article ie watchlist) is just pure bias aint it. City finished first last season and chelsea are playin brilliant while Utd is'nt at the moment. Surely waitin for Utd to hit form and plumpin for Valencia/Rooney is the better option than spendin 13.4 and waitin in hope. Note: i own RVP 🙂

I follow Gran on twitter...he LOOOVES United, but it's not something he even tries to hide. I dunno about the rest of the scouts....I'd say there may be some bias towards RVP, but overall, I think the bias is more towards the statistics/forms/beastmode potential of players. RVP has all those qualities, and United haven't looked too shabby as a team last week anyways. That being said...I DON'T own RVP...anymore. 😉 Now a proud owner of Torres (atm...I can always bring ol Purestrings back if need be.)

Rvp has been a passenger tbh.. once he hits form and their fixtures ease up then "all aboard".. i would'nt captain him vs STK che ARS though and would be scared he'd miss an easier fixture here and there. Not captainin a 13.4 player makes him pretty worthless tbf. even if he scores 30 points the next 3 games and he is'nt my captain that is'nt a big loss with the cash spread around

Valencia isn't a good option at all. What is he? 8.8m or something? Why pay that much for the odd assist...

A good way of describing the value of RVP is that as Captain material and someone likely to score all season long...his scores will be double most of the time. Therefore, you could argue he is worth double an attacking midfielder in the same team (which he is basically) Rooney in a deeper role is not worth 11.7m if he won't score as much goals.

      Example:

      Valencia...one assist + 90 minutes = 5 points
      RVP(c) 2/3 goals + 90 minutes + 3 BP's = 26/34 points

He's not still finding his feet...he looks exactly the same as he did at Arsenal...and he's been scoring goals and getting assists. He will explode soon and already has against Southampton. He scored a hat-trick against Chelsea last year...that's pretty amazing. He's captain material in any match really. If he gets rested for easier games then bugger!

if valencia gets back to the way he played last season it'll be more than the odd assist! he score or assisted or both quite often if you remember correctly

rooney playing in a mf role isn't worth it

rvp isn't worth the 13.4m though. knowing fergie he could be rested/benched at any point with no notice and is likely to miss easier home fixtures when you really want him. especially considering CL will probably be a big priority this year! and if you compare the 13.4m rvp plus a very cheap mf like guthrie or sterling vs a cheaper forward but still good forward such as jelly, ba, berb, etch and the much better mid you can get instead, the second option i think is definitely better value atm. things could change but for now it is.

and your example is hardly fair. with valencia you will be able to afford at least 1-2 more big hitters in your team than with rvp who will give you more points more often than not, than the cheapie you have instead right now with rvp. also the comparison isn't fair because you will have someone else as your captain with valencia.

also remember that this year rvp is in a much better united side so will share attacking points more often. and i don't think he is on as many fk's. also like i said he can easily be rotated. last year we knew he was nailed on because wenger had no other good options up front. fergie has 4 quality strikers plus kagawa who can play in a support role meaning there's really 5 players for 2 spots so we could see a lot more rotation. especially come december and possibly even whenever they have CL games

Well it's not about that, SAF's been playing a diamond formation for CL games and is now starting to use it to good effect in away games in the premier league against opposition with strong midfields. Diamond formation = no wingers = AV7 on the bench.

GRE= Graduate Record Examination: a ridiculous test with low external validity that many many many grad schools use as a screening tool for applicants. Weeds out the dummies, I guess? It's a terrible test though, doesn't measure how successful/smart/talented/scholarly/beautiful you are. Ludicrous, but necessary. Lol yessir. The GRE is for anyone NOT taking the MCAT, LSAT, or the GMAT and wanting to go to grad school. So if you don't want to be a lawyer, a doctor, or a business bureaucrat and want to go to grad school, then you'll HAVE to take the GRE (unless you want to be a social worker.....lulz) yes, I didn't have to take the SAT, I took the ACT though. Same thing with those tests, awful stuff. I watched the midnight release of one of the Star Wars the night before and didn't study for it and STILL scored pretty durn high, so you'll be alright the second time around. Got me into the best college in my state. Take it again, without fear. You own the test, the test never owns you, else it wins! 🙂

Yes, and you have to score in the 90th percentile on the Quantitative section in order to even be considered for a Master's program in Engineering. Which is your top school? I got my degree at UCLA.

That's what I am thinking of. Maybe need to downgrade my midfield and upgrade Lambert.
I have no idea why I fancy Lambert a lot, I got him at 6.0 and his explosive returns are just too hard to let him go.
Anyway, would like to hear any suggestion if I downgrade my midfield?

I like it. It looks very similar to my team with strong mids & backline while still having good picks up front. Keep BOTH Mata & Silva but dowgrade Nolan to Sterling. With a midfield that strong you shouldn't have someone as expensive as Nolan as back up.

Hi Smurf, I did refer some of your advises that you gave the other day, and it's great to see your like it.
That's one of my doubt too, but yeah, I think I should get Sterling instead. So the remaining cash just keep in the bank? Any reinforcement needed?

If it were me I would keep the spare money for future transfers. After you do Nolan to Sterling you have a great team IMO and I don't think any of then need "upgrading" with the spare cash.

he's played in 2.5 games so far this season! half a game against whu in which they lost 3-0, then scored two against WBA and then got an assist vs wig. that's not nearly enough data to tell! and only 1 assist vs wigan is a bit concerning.... you'd expect more from him against them.

@TW and anyone else who's interested...

My point about RVP vs. Valencia was to highlight how absurd it would be to spend 8.8m on Valencia to get Man Utd coverage instead of having the big hitter in RVP. Valencia did exceptionally well last year but...

    A) He's not nailed on
    B) He got lots of his attacking returns in easy fixtures
    C) Everyone's obsessed with the memory of his 3 assist game
    D) He does not score goals enough

I can understand the idea of coverage when it comes to other teams...for example: 'I don't have Jelavic...hmmm Pienaar's a good option....I don't have Torres...hmmm Mata is a good option'

But the point is Man United's team just isn't spread out evenly like this now that RVP is there. If they score goals it's going to be him with most of them. The odd Valencia assist won't make up for RVP (c) goals from your rivals. In fact, you'd be praying Valencia DOESN'T assist RVP!

Anyway...I think RVP's value is relative to how he gives you the maximum Man United attacking coverage...which might well be worth the extra bit of money he costs. It's still too early to be sure that the cheaper alternatives are going to be as reliable...can you imagine the fear of captaining other strikers all the time in tough fixtures...RVP is the best finisher in the league and will score so many goals provided he stays fit.

i prefer doublin up with Evans and Rafael for Manu's good run and ignorin rvp all together in that case.. he did his job for me - provided consistency while i dint know which strikers would perform - and now that i do know(ba, berbs etc) it's time to move on

i own 3 of the 4 mentioned (maybe all 4 if i do ramirez to sterling) and would rather have michu and fletcher this week than aguero and sterling

don't really fancy either of them tbh. if i go mci i'll probably go tevez or silva.

or the ppg king kolorov. debating bringing him in. thoughts? i def have the defence to cover for him not playing

Didn't think you would have the cash (as Kolarov is worth at least 7m 😉 )

Would you want 4 big defenders though?

I'm sure one 'must have' will emerge next weekend.

haha. well 1.9 in the bank leaves quite a lot.

maybe. gives me a strong replacement when kolorov doesn't play which i have to be prepared for.

haha true. just trying to plan because depending who i get rid of for kolorov effects who i can get in for michu next weekend due to prices

Doosra you made me actually consider lennon 😀 If he gets his current volume of shots converted at the same rate as last year, and he keeps scoring at the same rate we could me looking at 11 assists and 5 goals for him- but that is the absolute max IMO.

But I think he needs Adebayor to play, because currently he is either underperforming(key pass accuracy wise) or Defoe is just fecking all this up for him 🙂
