Nigeria, Mali and Morocco are amongst the qualifiers for next January’s African Cup of Nations, whilst crowd trouble causes Senegal’s home game against Ivory Coast to be abandoned with the visitors 6-2 up on aggregate.

Senegal Ivory Coast (Match abandoned with score standing at 0-2 (2-6 aggregate))
Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba started for the hosts – the latter’s owners will be relieved to hear his substitution early in the second half was purely for tactical reasons. Although Newcastle are yet to confirm, it appears the pair will be available for Newcastle next January after the Senegal’s official news agency released the following statement:

“The match was halted and the Lions of Senegal will not qualify for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. Senegal will now incur a sanction from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).”

Ivory Coast named four Premier League players in their starting line. Yaya and Kolo Toure, Cheick Tiote and Gervinho were all part of the Elephants’ first XI, while Wigan’s Arouna Kone and West Ham’s Guy Demel were unused subs. It was a former Fantasy favourite, Didier Drogba, who was the main protagonist, though. The ex-Chelsea man’s brace bagged a brace before the match was abandoned after missiles were launched onto the pitch and fires broke out in the stands.

Nigeria 6 Liberia 1
Chelsea duo Victor Moses and John Obi Mikel both lasted the 90 minutes as the hosts booked their place in the African Cup of Nations in January. Moses had a hand in three of the Super Eagles’ goals – his free-kick was nodded home by Efe Ambrose within 60 seconds before the former Wigan winger then scored twice. Mikel also found the net, slotting home a spot-kick as Nigeria clinched qualification with an 8-3 aggregate victory.

Botswana 1 Mali 4
West Ham’s Modibo Maiga was amongst the scorers as the visitors clinched their place in next January’s tournament. Fulham’s Mahamadou Diarra and QPR midfielder Samba Diakite could also be set to travel to South Africa.

Morocco 4 Mozambique 0
The home side overcame a two-goal first-leg deficit to book their spot in January’s tournament – amongst their ranks are Adel Taarabt, Villa’s Karim El Ahmadi, Liverpool’s Oussama Assaidi and Marouane Chamakh. Although the absence of the latter pair will have minimal impact for their respective clubs come January, El Ahmadi has started every game for Villa this season, while Taarabt has started to produce the goods for QPR, notching in each of his last two league appearances after regaining a starting role in Mark Hughes’ side.

In Other News…
Theo Walcott has been ruled out of England’s game with Poland on Tuesday evening. The Arsenal winger is sidelined with a chest injury sustained in a clash with the San Marino keeper in the opening minutes of Friday’s 5-0 win. The news immediately casts doubts over his availability for Arsenal’s Gameweek 8 trip to Norwich – climbing off the bench to grab a goal and assist against West Ham last time round, Walcott had staked a claim for a starting role at Carrow Road but a possible absence could see Gervinho continue on the right, affording Olivier Giroud a chance to lead the line once again.

Chris Brunt has revealed he is on the road to recovery from a hamstring injury.

“I’m not too sure what the overall timescale on the injury is, but it’s coming along. It wasn’t as bad as we thought at first because it felt like a nasty one when I got it at Villa Park, so in that sense it isn’t too serious. The problem is that it’s happened a couple of times now, so this time I want to make absolutely sure it’s right before I come back because it’s no use to anybody doing two or three weeks at a time and then getting another injury.”

The West Brom midfielder limped off against Villa with just 39 minutes on the clock in Gameweek 6 and missed out in the following week’s home triumph over QPR. While the Baggies continue to flourish under Steve Clarke, Brunt has been a peripheral figure – injuries have afforded him just two starts this term, with James Morrison proving to be the Hawthorns’ star turn in midfield. Both players started the season priced at 6.0 in FPL and while Brunt’s cost has understandably dropped, Morrison is yet to rise despite returning 40 points so far – just one less than Santi Cazorla, for example.

Which would be alright with me. I got him for when he plays...I would be worried with Wilson and Davies as the fill-ins. But I'm guessing he starts throwing him in at wing...even without playing 3 CBs...hell Wenger did it and Santos is 10x a worse defender than Lolarov.

So you'd start him, and expect him to be subbed sometimes. That could work well. Interesting.

No. Start him expect him to play and get points. If he DOESN'T start i'd expect him not to be inserted later

There's a lot of talk about dropping Michu after 2 more GWs. Might make sense. If you have 3 big-hitters and 1 bench fodder, there's probably only room for a 'value' MF in the remaining slot. Choice is quite good now - Michu (if you bought him early), Nolan, Morrison, Pienaar maybe even qualifies. Will need to re-assess when the time comes.

              i gotcha.

i've set mine up so that i can rotate every week based on fixtures and to some extent form. it also allows me to bench someone for a couple weeks if they are injured or something like that as i have a strong enough squad to account for that. therefore i don't have a set formation

if i were on a wc i'd either go for a rotation plan like i did or go for a semi rotation plan as in no rvp and 3-4 def you like plus 5 mf and 3 forwards

              so say something like:

              baines, gibbs, rafa, saylor
              cazorla, bale, pienaar, 2 others
ba, and then two of jelly/berb/fletcher/lambert/suarez

and then fill in two gk's and a def after that

I reckon he will. Hes learning all the time. Obviously alot better tool for Mancini than a fairly average Clichy. No Doubt his defensive game has improved since the start of the season. Also now they are playing 4-2-3-1 ally was obviously never going to fit as a third defender,. Now that that's changed i can foresee a better run for him.

I think Mancini is finding out that it'smuch easier to get cleans when you're up 3-0 than it is 0-0.

Definitely, Sunderland have no real speed out wide, and that I think is going to be the major common denominator in whether or not he plays. So WBA and WHU seem good whereas I don't think Mancini really wants him tussling out wide with Dyer or Routledge. Also if Rodwell and all other FFP signings continue to haunt Mancini all point to Kolarov squirming in.

I would have dumped HBA by now. He just doesn't fit their half-assed hoofin style of play. I'm rolling with Kolarov+baines, Hangeland, rafael and Jenkinson, so I can afford to see him on the bench if it keeps him the differential 'nuclear option'.

      Woah - steady. 😉
In principal it looks great. The problem is that it's then difficult to take advantage of the 'value' opportunities like Nolan, Morrison, you know them. Solution would be to play 5 MFs, but then need to bench a FWD slot.
On balance I think 4 big MFs not a good idea.

i might wait 1 week until after the stoke game but honestly i think the extra points you can get by upgrading your squad elsewhere will outweigh rvp's points. don't think he's good value at his price right now... especially when cheaper forwards are scoring just as well if not better! while attacking fullbacks seem to be doing quite well and a strong mf can really help too

2 and 3 are respectable. 1 is just a sideways shot in the foot. both could actually score big this weekend. But by all means dump the striker classed as a midfielder the week he's going to play Norwich. Don't be afraid of Cazorla and Gervinho for the next two weeks. They are about 50% of the offense.

Inspired by Corrigan's insane idea to have 4 big-hitting MFs ( 🙂 ), I'm thinking about a 3-5-2. To make that happen you need either
    A. Rotate strikers, or
    B. bench fodder striker

Who are the options for either if these scenarios?

Too many good options mate. I guess I'd bench Begovic, Saylor/Cuellar, Lambert and HBA.

that's the point! though it does give a bit of a benching headache if everyone has nice fixtures.

thanks mate. assuming west ham are tight in the back at home again that'd probably make the most sense. hba first sub and lambert second if i did that?

Baines + 4 rotations can allow it.

I'd go 3 heavy hitting MFs with 2 mid priced good rotators, and 2 heavy hitting fwds with 1 budget option!

Again just looking at different options/approaches we could possible look at in the future. No i am not going to use this as of now, but i see no harm in discussing the same. Now i was playing around with my team and am 0.2 short of this team.

    Bego Jussi
    Baines Gibbs 4.0 x 3
    Santi Mata Bale Pienaar Sterling
    RVP Aguero Moore/Pog

Moore/Pog and Sterling can alternatively be players who rotate. I know Swansea's fixtures stiffen, but if Moore is nailed on, and if he could afford you this team, why not?

And to make that 0.2, Gibbs could go to Sagna when he's back.

It's a very decent team, but I don't want to shell out all that money for RVP when there are budget options scoring more than him.
      I'd prefer 2 of Suarez/ Fletcher/ Berbatov/ Ba/ Jelavic than RVP and Moore/ Pog

As of now the budget strikers are doing really well. But can they sustain that form? All if's and buts. Two more blanks from RVP and Aguero not starting the next game which is possible, ya i get your point. But in the long run, you would back RVP Aguero Mata Bale and Santi to be right up there with the points, wouldn't you.

Don't know too much about Moore except he's come on as a sub four times and has 1 assist this season. What worries me more about any Swan at the moment is the bad murmerings in the club and the good start they had was maybe a little flattering. http://vz.iminent.com/vz/cce66147-b2f8-41c4-a5f7-b5eed784f6a6/1/smile.gif

I have one transfer to make.

    Foster - (Bego)
    Baines - Gibbs - Cuellar - (Davies) - (Demel)
    Hazard - Cazorla - Michu - Pienaar - (Guthrie)
    Suarez - Aguero - Lambert

    Considering Lambert > Berbatov.

What do ye reckon lads? Cheers 🙂
