Among Stoke’s “jolly green giants,” as Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson referred to the Staffordshire side earlier this month, Peter Crouch stands tallest. Unlike the more robust looking of Stoke’s leviathans such as Robert Huth, however, Crouch’s freakishly long, fragile looking 6 foot 7 inch body means he is too often underestimated as a footballer. This allows his deft touch and at times prolific goal scoring ability to frequently catch teams unaware.

For England, he has scored an impressive 22 goals over his 42 appearances between 2005 and 2010, whilst during his three year spell at Liverpool, which came to an end in 2008, he also scored 22 goals, including a “perfect hat-trick”, with his head, left foot and right foot, against Arsenal in 2007. The previous year Crouch’s assist for Steven Gerrard’s second goal in the FA Cup final proved another highpoint in his career.

It is not just opponents that often underestimate this 31-year-old, though; Fantasy managers are also often too quick to dismiss Crouch.  Owned by just 9.4% of managers in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and 0.8% of managers in the Sky Sports game, he has emerged as a key differential as Stoke’s fixture list significantly improves over the next eight Gameweeks (SUN, nor, QPR, wha, FUL, NEW, wba, avl).

Whilst Stoke’s opening run of games have been among the toughest in the Premier League, Crouch has already performed well, though, accruing 46 points in the FPL game, with four goals, an assist and 11 bonus points to his name. He is now ranked fifth in the FPL game among strikers in terms of total points – only Ba and Fletcher have collected more bonus points thus far.

Slowly but surely Fantasy managers are beginning to look beyond his tall frame and see the genuine footballing prospect that lies beneath. He has risen 0.2m in the FPL game over the last eight weeks, where he is now priced at an affordable 6.7m. Those setting the prices in the Sky game are perhaps less naive about Crouch’s potential and have slapped him with an 8.8 valuation but he could prove to be worth every penny if this lanky titan can continue his fine form over the kind looking schedule ahead.

The major issue surrounding Crouch as a prospect is whether there is room in our three-man FPL forward lines to find a space for the Stoke striker. With the likes of Steven Fletcher, Demba Ba, Dimitar Berbatov and Rickie Lambert all vying for our attention in the low-to-mid-price bracket, there are plenty of viable up front alternatives also to consider over the next few matches.

In addition, having recently favoured a 4-5-1 due to a punishing opening schedule, Tony Pulis is expected to return to a 4-4-2 as the fixtures ease. Jon Walters offers an alternative route if he is moved back up top – classified as a midfielder in FPL and with spot-kick duties also under his belt, the Irishman is also expected to pick up plenty new suitors and could be a better fit for some.

Righto - so are people of the opinion that Santon is nailed on for Newcastle, with question marks over Simpson and Saylor?

Santon's threat to playing time is injured long term - Raylor. Santon has played and started in every PL game this season.

Anita can play LB/RB but Pardew has stated that Anita will strictly play in midfield for the Toon.

Simpson should be the starter at RB.

I believe that Saylor will start again this weekend.

Santon and Saylor if you want a Toon defender.

Oh well, we live and learn, and Hazard was rising very fast.

I'd only back Podolski if he moved to CF which I don't see happening now with Giroud there, or even Gervinho.

Personally I think Aguero is the next one to explode.

Don't!! You need to improve your defenders. Try to get Baines or Iva or Riise or Vertonghen. Try to find way to improve them. or you can just keep the defenders like that don't sell rafael for a while and see what he can do inn the few next fixtures. Keep RVP, BA, BALE, STERLING. not sure about dyer, cazorla, tevez. Cazorla 100% starting eleven but you can get better and cheaper such as Mata or Michu or Nolan. Tevez is not guarantee starting eleven Dyer is not guarantee as well.

I didn't say You do WCing. I mean you need to make a plan to improve your defenders. To be honest i have Hangeland and im planning to sell Hangeland for Riise, because Riise seems much better, the price doesn't look much different. I was telling you players that you need to get rid or no. And you choose which one. not Using WC.

Almost definitely not. We've ditched 2 strikers along with most of the top 5 long ago. Because you then get overrun in midfield with one man less. Definitely committed to the ⁴-2-3-1, only question is who plays where. Of course, if one of the wide midfielders in the 3 plays advanced, they are close to a striker ie. Walcott or Podolski.

Jol tried a lot of things last season and Hangeland was the only one who was nailed on. He played quite a few defenders regularly... Kelly (RB), Baird (RB, CB) Hughes (RB, CB) Senderos (RB, CB)

Hughes looks to be first choice over Senderos at the moment but it could change quickly.

I had Vertonghen at the beginning of the year but dropped him after a couple weeks. Look at Vertonghen's track record at Ajax (23 goals in 155 appearances).. he is definitely not much of a goal scoring threat, even by a defenders standard. I'm not going to spend £7 on a defender unless he is going to get me goals as well as clean sheets.

1 in 7 in the Eredivisie. The Premiership is a different beast entirely.

Even with a 1 in 7 record, I'd argue at a £7 price it's not good enough. For that kind of money, I'd rather spend it on a talented wing back who is going to work up the flanks getting goals and assists (i.e. Leighton Baines).

Right, but that's not what you said. I don't think you can point to a defender scoring 1 in 7 and claim he isn't a goalscoring threat. I'm not making a case for or against him.

Thanks for both replies. They sum up my dilemma: Nasri is the best midfield option for City at the moment, but he did just play and Bale looks poised for some points. Nasri scored in CL so Mancini might want to ride the hot hand (foot?). Hmm. Bale is the prudent move and my last few imprudent moves have not worked out well . . .

I would do A because Tevez is sure of starting (I think) and HBA does well at home. Aguero could easily play, as Mancini needs a good result, but Tevez is more nailed on IMO because he did not play a lot in CL.

MON teams are usually good for defensive investment and Cuellar is a cheap, nailed-on player for them.

Hey there DZers. A few questions if you wouldn't mind helping me out:

    1. I currently have Tevez as C - Does his 20 min cameo last night 'assure' him of a start?
    2. My next best option is Cazorla C but Arsenal have hit a bad patch in terms of threat - Do you expect them to bounce back against QPR?
    3. Does anybody think that Nasri is a viable choice at 8.2? Tempted to downgrade Tevez and bring in Nasri as my MCI cover.

I think Tevez will play--Mancini needs a good result--but with better options up front Nasri might be the best way into City for the next week or two. I am serously thinking about bringing him in. If you keep Tevez I would (c) him over Santi as Caz has balnked against Norwich and in the CL and I just do not see him as reliable (c) fodder.

At the moment he plays further up with Silva out. I see him as temporary only, but for now he seems more of a threat than Yaya. If I had Yaya I would not switch him for Nasri, but as I have neither at the moment I would bring in Nasri of the two.

      In summary I think the popular conclusions is;

      1. Tevez is likely to play and is a fairly good C choice.
      2. Cazorla is bit too much of a C risk given Arsenal's recent scoring problems.
      3. Nasri is worth monitoring, but Tevez is currently the better option.

Floated the idea to much mirth last night but I have an eye on Pog at 4.7. Would allow bigger-hitters in midfield and, for me, offers a better option than most '5th midfielders'.

I'd imagine that Cazorla will be reliant on other players putting away his chances and that he will score a few goals but won't be prolific.

      Afternoon Acqua

I can't comment on the CL as I didn't watch the games but the general media view is that a limp Arsenal were absolute bobbins, a lacklustre Chelsea were torn to pieces and a feeble, bad-tempered City were appalling. Not very encouraging, particulary if you add in United's shambolic defending.

I think I'd stick with Hazard unless you need the money from selling him.

    Hi guys…need some serious help!

    Mannone Davis
    Rafael baines demel cuellar davies
    Pienaar barfa Morrison michu cazorla
    Lambert suarez rvp.

Have 2FT and 0.2m in the bank. My biggest worry is that i DON’T have any city/chelski/spurs players in my team plus the fact that lambert is a rotation risk now….

    So a couple of questions:
    1) What should i do with lambert...he didnt start last game but he always starts at home so shd i play him this week and take him out next week?
    2) if i take lambert out this week, which striker should i bring in? i was thinking defoe for spurs coverage/ba if i take barfa/ jelavic if i drop pienaar/tevez but rotation risk
    3) I really want some city coverage so thinking of bringing in nasri...thoughts? i can do without chelski coverage since they have bad fixtures
    4) whats the general feel around michu...bad fixtures but playing as a striker....

    ALL thoughts welcome:)

Only decision left for me this week is who to captain. My candidates:

    1) Gareth Bale: Superb away form, rested and on the hunt to score a goal to dedicate to his kid. Playing the weakest defence in the league.

    2) Santi Cazorla: The heart-beat of Arsenal's attack. On corners and some free-kicks. At home to a leaky QPR defence. Arsenal off form, however.

    3) Demba Ba: At home, on pens and the focal point to the NEW attack. Team perhaps not as free-scoring as TOT or ARS, and he's up against a better defence than the other 2.

    Votes please!!

      Hi Jinswick.

      1) It's all set up for Bale, isn't it. New baby, playing his old team, worst defence in the universe, well-rested and so on. I think this spells absolute disaster. A 2 pointer at best.

      2) Santi? Arsenal are struggling, no centre forward, Theo out, Banjo Dome reverting to type, QPR improving and Diakite back. Very dangerous.

      3) Ba. Stats are great, P.Cisse fallen down a big hole, Newcastle slowly improving. Probably the safest choice.

Only thing with Ba is, WBA have looked decent in defence. I see that game being fairly tight, 1-0 NEW or the like. I can see the other 2 games potentially being goal fests, so the upside is higher with Bale or Santi. And given Arsenal's current form, this sways me towards Bale. But like you say, when everything seems too good to be true, it normally is!

    Right.

I've just spotted that a Liverpool / Stoke rotation from now until Christmas gives this run of games: SUN, NEW, QPR, WIG, FUL, NEW, SOT, avl / whm, EVE / AVL, FUL, LIV, SOT, SUN. That's pretty good. So I'm kind of tempted to go for a Sterling / Kightly midfield rotation. Over the next 2 weeks I could do:

    Michu > Kightly
    Suarez > Tevez
    Lambert > Ba

and that would give a front end of:

Santi Bale Mata Sterling / Kightly
    RVP Tevez Ba

I'd quite like to keep Michu though. On the other hand, if Arsenal continue to struggle and Cazorla fails to match his price tag then he's for the chop, so I have other options there.

Does this plan have legs or is it a turkey?

      Sterling/Maloney gives:

(x is the one bad week - MCI/tot.)

      But both rotations look good.

Thanks for the thoughts, guys. It looks good on paper but I just can't get excited about a Stoke midfielder at all. I mean, I promised myself that I wouldn't buy Walters this year; it's just depressing seeing him in your team and his form always fizzles out into a long line of twos and threes. Kightly seems cut from the same cloth and his stats are poor, as Christina points out.
Salome Maloney I like much better though. Cheers.

I was going to get Begovic in for Ruddy this week but now thinking that my defense might be in more need of attention. If Jenkinson doesn't play, my third defender will be either Rangel away to City or Nelsen away to Arsenal. Don't really fancy either of them. So switch Rangel to a stoke defender?

    My big delema!

REALLY want Bale for these next 2 GW's but at what expense?

Is it worth a 4pt hit next week and losing Ivan & Michu this week?

If i do the above my squad will look like this:

    Baines/Wilson/Cuellar/Hughes
    Bale/Haz/Caz/Nolan/Kaca
    RVP/Jelly/Berba

will leave me with 0.1 in Bank. My worry is that i would be backed into a corner going forward if i did this ......you thoughts?

Nice. I don't want to chop and change to much though. I've taken 2 x 4pt hits and it's been disastrous. Bringing in the prev week's "must have" only to see the player I'm selling cleaning up.

Steady eddy for me now. I'm not comfortable with my 53 pts I'm trying to claw back in my ML.

            Not at all.
