Among Stoke’s “jolly green giants,” as Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson referred to the Staffordshire side earlier this month, Peter Crouch stands tallest. Unlike the more robust looking of Stoke’s leviathans such as Robert Huth, however, Crouch’s freakishly long, fragile looking 6 foot 7 inch body means he is too often underestimated as a footballer. This allows his deft touch and at times prolific goal scoring ability to frequently catch teams unaware.

For England, he has scored an impressive 22 goals over his 42 appearances between 2005 and 2010, whilst during his three year spell at Liverpool, which came to an end in 2008, he also scored 22 goals, including a “perfect hat-trick”, with his head, left foot and right foot, against Arsenal in 2007. The previous year Crouch’s assist for Steven Gerrard’s second goal in the FA Cup final proved another highpoint in his career.

It is not just opponents that often underestimate this 31-year-old, though; Fantasy managers are also often too quick to dismiss Crouch.  Owned by just 9.4% of managers in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and 0.8% of managers in the Sky Sports game, he has emerged as a key differential as Stoke’s fixture list significantly improves over the next eight Gameweeks (SUN, nor, QPR, wha, FUL, NEW, wba, avl).

Whilst Stoke’s opening run of games have been among the toughest in the Premier League, Crouch has already performed well, though, accruing 46 points in the FPL game, with four goals, an assist and 11 bonus points to his name. He is now ranked fifth in the FPL game among strikers in terms of total points – only Ba and Fletcher have collected more bonus points thus far.

Slowly but surely Fantasy managers are beginning to look beyond his tall frame and see the genuine footballing prospect that lies beneath. He has risen 0.2m in the FPL game over the last eight weeks, where he is now priced at an affordable 6.7m. Those setting the prices in the Sky game are perhaps less naive about Crouch’s potential and have slapped him with an 8.8 valuation but he could prove to be worth every penny if this lanky titan can continue his fine form over the kind looking schedule ahead.

The major issue surrounding Crouch as a prospect is whether there is room in our three-man FPL forward lines to find a space for the Stoke striker. With the likes of Steven Fletcher, Demba Ba, Dimitar Berbatov and Rickie Lambert all vying for our attention in the low-to-mid-price bracket, there are plenty of viable up front alternatives also to consider over the next few matches.

In addition, having recently favoured a 4-5-1 due to a punishing opening schedule, Tony Pulis is expected to return to a 4-4-2 as the fixtures ease. Jon Walters offers an alternative route if he is moved back up top – classified as a midfielder in FPL and with spot-kick duties also under his belt, the Irishman is also expected to pick up plenty new suitors and could be a better fit for some.

    Do people think

    A) Ben Arfa and Crouch or
    B) Walters and Bale?

    Looking to get Stoke and Newcastle attacking coverage and have a midfield and striker spot for it. I'm thinking B at the moment - only concern is if Walters vulnerable to not playing 90 mins now with Owen and other options.

    I have 1 FT and £4.3 in the bank.

    Am thinking taking a hit to do:

    Fletcher and Davies out.
    Crouch and vert in?
    Or maybe just Aguero in for fletcher?

    Foster, Begovic

    Baines, Davies, Demel, Cuellar, Gorkks

    Nolan, Cazorla, Michu, Bale, Guthrie

    Ba, RVP, Fletcher

    Thank you

          Too much class in that city team to not perform. They'll be itching to get back on the field after that disappoint.

    Good Morning,

    My defence is in badish shape and especially gw11 is a big worry. Also think that I should get Ba in gw11 (or now) onwards for Berba. I think I need 4 transfers in 3 weeks, so one 4 point hit is needed/acceptable.

    My defence is
    Jussi, Fed
    Baines, Hughes, Cuellar, Demel, Rangel

    Which plan you like more?
    a)
    gw9 Jussi + Rangel => Begovic + Wilson (-4)
    gw10 Santi => Mata
    gw11 Berba => Ba

    b)
    gw9 Jussi + Berba => Begovic + Ba (-4)
    gw10 Santi => Mata
    gw11 Rangel => Wilson

    I know both actually means I'm taking a hit for a keeper change, but as I think that is an issue that needs to be sorted out sooner or later + it looks like I won't have a spare transfer for that in near future - I might just do it now and get Bego already for this week.

    a) is tempting because Wilson's price will go up and Rangel down before next gw + I think Berba's next two games are as good as Ba's (alltough I would rather have Ba if I had free choice..).

    Sorry for long post, but looking at least 1 reply...please 🙂

      I wouldn't plan too far ahead. One step at a time and look at the mist pressing transfer. Wilson in for Rangel would make sense. Next week Bego in for Jussi. Santi & Mata is at best a sideways switch.

      Surely Fergie is a gentleman and don't want his top summer signing to play against his old club because it happens to be one of the top clubs in PL - NOT! Of course he will play.

    Podolski must be at risk of starting this week? I can see Wenger shaking things up, especially if Walcott/Ox are fit. He has returned 1 assist in the 6 games I have had him. He scored 20 points in the 2 games I dropped him.

      Might be at risk yes, but i reckon Gerv has been more wasteful.
      They need Walcott, they really do. And Wenger needs to restore faith in Arshavin.

      And primarily, he should stop playing Ramsey.

      It crossed my mind, honestly did, but i have Tevez and he's a better option on paper. Also, someone who saw the game said he played behind Petric.

          Yes, liking the debut season with FFS. Not planning, just got lucky and went ahead with the Michu Petric combo in the beginning. In addition, Got RVP as soon as Aguero got injured which worked in my favor as well. Had Bale from the start and that line of transfers has been a massive fail. Bale Bale Bale Hazard Hazard Hazard Hazard Santi

          A little worried this week without Bale and Ba.

      At the moment I've got him and Cazorla constantly swapping as Vice, but its always a risk to captain Berbs, however if it does come off its usually something special!

    Going through the stoke forums(oatcakefanzine) and tehy reckon walters should be dropped for Etherington. Not just one or two ppl.. but almost ALL of them. They reckon he's sh!t and is even more sh!t playin on the wing which he's gonna be doin for a while now. Even though he's started some record number of games in a row they reckon they time's come for him to be dropped. Readin all that has put me totally of him. Considerin Nolan and Morisson got bad fixtures too i'm leaning towards lallana(rotates with sterling) as the best midfield budget option atm

            I don't like Walters being on the wing now. I feel he will likely revert to a striker again now for easier fixtures but I am going to wait and see how they shape up. Does anyone know if Stoke played 4-4-2 at home to Swansea? I am clearly still very tempted to get him in.

    Question.. would you prefer playin a Mata for eg every week leavin sterling(and his potential points) on the bench week in week out? or rotate Lallana and Sterling for home games(perfect rotation).. surely the big hitter would'nt be 3 odd million more in that case?
