Among Stoke’s “jolly green giants,” as Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson referred to the Staffordshire side earlier this month, Peter Crouch stands tallest. Unlike the more robust looking of Stoke’s leviathans such as Robert Huth, however, Crouch’s freakishly long, fragile looking 6 foot 7 inch body means he is too often underestimated as a footballer. This allows his deft touch and at times prolific goal scoring ability to frequently catch teams unaware.

For England, he has scored an impressive 22 goals over his 42 appearances between 2005 and 2010, whilst during his three year spell at Liverpool, which came to an end in 2008, he also scored 22 goals, including a “perfect hat-trick”, with his head, left foot and right foot, against Arsenal in 2007. The previous year Crouch’s assist for Steven Gerrard’s second goal in the FA Cup final proved another highpoint in his career.

It is not just opponents that often underestimate this 31-year-old, though; Fantasy managers are also often too quick to dismiss Crouch.  Owned by just 9.4% of managers in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and 0.8% of managers in the Sky Sports game, he has emerged as a key differential as Stoke’s fixture list significantly improves over the next eight Gameweeks (SUN, nor, QPR, wha, FUL, NEW, wba, avl).

Whilst Stoke’s opening run of games have been among the toughest in the Premier League, Crouch has already performed well, though, accruing 46 points in the FPL game, with four goals, an assist and 11 bonus points to his name. He is now ranked fifth in the FPL game among strikers in terms of total points – only Ba and Fletcher have collected more bonus points thus far.

Slowly but surely Fantasy managers are beginning to look beyond his tall frame and see the genuine footballing prospect that lies beneath. He has risen 0.2m in the FPL game over the last eight weeks, where he is now priced at an affordable 6.7m. Those setting the prices in the Sky game are perhaps less naive about Crouch’s potential and have slapped him with an 8.8 valuation but he could prove to be worth every penny if this lanky titan can continue his fine form over the kind looking schedule ahead.

The major issue surrounding Crouch as a prospect is whether there is room in our three-man FPL forward lines to find a space for the Stoke striker. With the likes of Steven Fletcher, Demba Ba, Dimitar Berbatov and Rickie Lambert all vying for our attention in the low-to-mid-price bracket, there are plenty of viable up front alternatives also to consider over the next few matches.

In addition, having recently favoured a 4-5-1 due to a punishing opening schedule, Tony Pulis is expected to return to a 4-4-2 as the fixtures ease. Jon Walters offers an alternative route if he is moved back up top – classified as a midfielder in FPL and with spot-kick duties also under his belt, the Irishman is also expected to pick up plenty new suitors and could be a better fit for some.

Up to 935th in the world in UCL and 27th in the Scout League.

When is it best to wildcard? After GW 4, 5 or save for the later stages of the knockout round?

    Current line up is:

    Sirigu/Beto
    Evans/Vidal/Beria/DeMichelis/Mulgrew
    Kroos/Holtby/Reus/Shirokov/Lucho Gonzalez

      Fair play to you!

Latter stages when you're fewer to choose from. Should have enough players for 11 in Match day 6. 1st round of last 16 is wildcard so there's a good point to WC Match day 6 but I reckon no point in wild carding 2 Match days in a row, save it for later rounds when you've more scope to pick fewer players.

    Begovic (Jaaskelainen)
    Baines Jenkinson Clark (Clyne Rangel)
    Cazorla Bale Hazard Nolan (Michu)
    Berbatov Jelavic Suarez

1 FT, 0.6 in bank. My original plan was to do Rangel/Suarez --> Gorkss/Aguero for -4 hit, but i just can't get comfortable with Aguero. Starting to wonder whether to just leave Suarez in for this week or get someone else entirely. What do you think?

    Tevez captain

    Now a no brainer

Dzeko showed Mancini that he is a super sub , not nearly as good when starting , back to the bench for him.
Tevez makes the team tick, the stats support that view , he wont be left out

So your implying that Dzeko will be used as a supersub, a supersub who in all probability will score. As a result of that analysis your going to get Tevez aka not Mr definitely going to score Dzeko.........

Were far from abysmal against, have practically a full and fresh squad available, arsenal have players who have including internationals not been rested. Before we get the QPRs defence is terrible, next wk will be the first time the will have the same back four, plus Diakte back in the middle. I see us causing them a lot of problems.

Just one last question.... I then have enough money to do Lambert --------> Berbatov for a 4pt hit, is this worth it?

I'm afraid if I don't do it now I wont be able to do it as simply later on as Berbatov's price will rise.

Southampton play Tottenham at home then West Brom away, both tough games.

Fulham play Reading away, which should be fairly comfortable despite them not being great at home, and Everton at home, which will be tough but totally different kettle of fish at Craven Cottage.

I'd prefer Berba. I think you should do it.

Question, what's a better idea..... Taking a -4 hit 2 weeks in a row, and risking defeat in 2 H2H matches or just taking it on the chin in a single week with a -8 hit, therefor only jeopardizing 1 H2H match?

go -8 if you are buying for both gameweeks. I like buying in for the last game on Sky every week, regardless of the hit. It makes life worth living. Don't take H2H too seriously. Enjoy it 😉
