Among Stoke’s “jolly green giants,” as Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson referred to the Staffordshire side earlier this month, Peter Crouch stands tallest. Unlike the more robust looking of Stoke’s leviathans such as Robert Huth, however, Crouch’s freakishly long, fragile looking 6 foot 7 inch body means he is too often underestimated as a footballer. This allows his deft touch and at times prolific goal scoring ability to frequently catch teams unaware.

For England, he has scored an impressive 22 goals over his 42 appearances between 2005 and 2010, whilst during his three year spell at Liverpool, which came to an end in 2008, he also scored 22 goals, including a “perfect hat-trick”, with his head, left foot and right foot, against Arsenal in 2007. The previous year Crouch’s assist for Steven Gerrard’s second goal in the FA Cup final proved another highpoint in his career.

It is not just opponents that often underestimate this 31-year-old, though; Fantasy managers are also often too quick to dismiss Crouch.  Owned by just 9.4% of managers in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and 0.8% of managers in the Sky Sports game, he has emerged as a key differential as Stoke’s fixture list significantly improves over the next eight Gameweeks (SUN, nor, QPR, wha, FUL, NEW, wba, avl).

Whilst Stoke’s opening run of games have been among the toughest in the Premier League, Crouch has already performed well, though, accruing 46 points in the FPL game, with four goals, an assist and 11 bonus points to his name. He is now ranked fifth in the FPL game among strikers in terms of total points – only Ba and Fletcher have collected more bonus points thus far.

Slowly but surely Fantasy managers are beginning to look beyond his tall frame and see the genuine footballing prospect that lies beneath. He has risen 0.2m in the FPL game over the last eight weeks, where he is now priced at an affordable 6.7m. Those setting the prices in the Sky game are perhaps less naive about Crouch’s potential and have slapped him with an 8.8 valuation but he could prove to be worth every penny if this lanky titan can continue his fine form over the kind looking schedule ahead.

The major issue surrounding Crouch as a prospect is whether there is room in our three-man FPL forward lines to find a space for the Stoke striker. With the likes of Steven Fletcher, Demba Ba, Dimitar Berbatov and Rickie Lambert all vying for our attention in the low-to-mid-price bracket, there are plenty of viable up front alternatives also to consider over the next few matches.

In addition, having recently favoured a 4-5-1 due to a punishing opening schedule, Tony Pulis is expected to return to a 4-4-2 as the fixtures ease. Jon Walters offers an alternative route if he is moved back up top – classified as a midfielder in FPL and with spot-kick duties also under his belt, the Irishman is also expected to pick up plenty new suitors and could be a better fit for some.

Cash in on McCauley, swap him for Wilson at stoke. That way you'll have cash to do
      Guthrie -> Sterling or
Jussi -> Foster (with Begs you wont play Jussi in the nxt 10 wks.

City's form would be a risk, and how they react to this result. They don't have the most creative midfield in the world with Silva out.

Captaincy shouldn't be a risk. Simply having Aguero may be enough of a differential.

It'll be Ba or Bale for me, and a wait and see on City while their fixtures are still strong (plenty of time to captain Aguero with more certainty).

This is all conjecture, obviously, but Tevez looks jaded to me (I don't know why that would be - could be the 10 men vs West Brom). Mancini could go back to basics and play a 451 with just Aguero up top (his preferred striker) and Yaya in behind, Nasri and Sinclair wide.

You just never know when there are genuine alternatives, but fwiw, hope he starts for you!

Why the snobbery/borderline arrogance to point hits? I've seen advice this evening (and generally) saying not to take a hit to bring in Bale this week. Spurs vs Southampton? In the words of Goose, "it doesn't get any better than that!".

Would not be at all surprised if Southampton continued their trend of conceding 3+ goals a game... Bale used to play for the Saints... just had a baby (cue Be be to rocking baby goal celebration). Seriously, give me one good reason why you play this GAME if you don't rate Bale this weekend as a worthy punt?!

Common sense says you wait for more definitive news from AVB that he's in the picture for the weekend, but that should be your only cause for caution.

I think there's far too many on here that forget this is a game! Of course, the overall winner probably takes very few point hits but just think how much luck they get...

Last week, I took a punt on Taarabt, and he was a hair's width away from QPR being awarded a blatant penalty which he likely would have taken. Just have to continue playing the odds (like Suarez in away to Norwich) and enjoy the ride!

I like Defoe, and he's underrated by the FPL pro's (you get called a "casual" if you do a RMT with Defoe in it!), but it's all about Bale due to the circumstances. I'd be reluctant to take a point hit for any other Spurs player this weekend.

Having said that, if Bale scores, someone has to have assisted, and likewise, if he assists, then someone else will score the goal lol! He who dares, Rodney.

Bale is an underacheiver/overperformer - he's schizophrenic fantasy material. Bale is not the guy you bring in for an away game to Southampton, it would just be too easy. He will blank on you the next couple of weeks when you consider captaining him, and then against Man City(when you transfer him out, he will score double figures). At end of year, he will be one of top scoring players, and yet will screw you for the games you actually decide to captain him. For that reason, I still feel Bale is only an option if willing to Keep him and play him every week. For me, its just too much money on a player that I can never consider captaining due to this problem. Would rather a guy who scores less overall, but consistently kicks the crap out of weaker teams, making them easy captain material.

Oh, I get it now - so when Tevez is away to United you will take a hit to bring him in and then captain him as long as he had a baby? Of course you wouldnt becuase it would be against United. We in fact are just talking about Bale against a weak side.

🙂 no, that's one of 3 factors in Bale's favour from my evaluation standpoint. Rationally, it is the factor that carries the most weighting, obviously.

I disagree with your underlying point that Bale makes a bad captain choice. He certainly doesn't make an easy one, ala RVP, Ronaldo, etc. but can provide equally big returns.

Bale cannot as consistently provide big returns against the weaker sides as RVP and especially Ronaldo - not even on the same planet. Bale can just as consistently pull a big haul against tougher competition, but when it comes to beating the living daylights out of weaker teams, please dont even compare. Thats exactly why its never easy with Bale.

Also, apart from sounding like you're scarred from past decisions to captain Bale, those experiences shouldn't colour future captaincy decisions if all your boxes are ticked.

Equally, there will be people out there who have captained Bale at the right time.

Its all historical in the end, that is true. Gaston Ramirez may become top scoring midfielder in game once he gets back as nobody truly knows - but what I have noticed with Bale over past couple of seasons is that the people that Generally do well with him, are people that keep him over the long run as opposed to those that try and time fixtures with him. I like to play by fixtures and so he doesnt fit into my plan. Most of his big captain hauls have been when playing a weaker team in the middle of a shit schedule. Not trying to change your mind on it - look it up yourself - just what I have noticed.

Looks spot on, Hutton! Can certainly see Mancini mixing it up with Sinclair getting a start, especially considering his Swansea history.

Have the bookies twigged? What's the odds on Sinclair anytime goalscorer? 😉

Any thoughts on Steven Gerrard this season?
He's flying silently below the radar with 40 pts - an average 5 a game which aint too bad.
Also on peno's and set pieces....

Is he worth a gamble? Will he play further forward now Suarez is the only fit striker at the club?

Anyone here watch Liverpool regularly enough to assess his prospects?

I like him actually but I don't think he's a happy bunny with the new set up there but granted
he is a solid pick if liv do pick up the gauntlet_my whole G'W sez he won't/they won't this week.

    Shipping out Suarez.

    Suarez for Tevez or Aguero?

Have 11.1 in the piggy bank and needs to be done tonight due to me getting Beg before his rise tonight/tomorrow. Otherwise have 11m for the striker which would mean Tevez.

Aguero is my choice, but does he justify the additional pennies.

IF he starts and if you dont mind spending your past penny (ie, you dont need the cash for transfers you might be looking at for next week) then he just about justifies it in my opinion.

I happen to think they'll both start and when they do Aguero is always furthest forward and in and around that 6 yard box. He's also on Pens (when Balo's on the bench) which is a bonus.

I think you might find that tevez is quite often the furthest forward when both play but the point about the pens is probably correct at least until he misses at which time i think they will revert to tevez.

Depends man, how pressing are your needs elsewhere in your team? If you see potential weak problems coming in the next few weeks which will need addressing then get Tevez.

IMO both will start this weekend.

Yeah, pretty good moves, although I think you'll want Michu back if he stays playing up front. It's a tough call between ditching Pienaar and Michu - fixtures favour keeping Pienaar, but Michu is the bigger goal threat and like me you also have Baines as some Everton attacking coverage. I ended up doing Pienaar & Suarez -> Ba & Mata this week....

I generally like the Kolarov move - the attacking factor is worth 2 games in 3 on the bench or a 1pt return (hell, 1pt is all but a handful of defenders are rreturning, anyway). It's Defoe I'm not sure about, with the threat of Adebayor and reduced minutes.

Defoe has started every game, I believe, and played the internationals, so I can't be long before he's given a rest. I like Ba and Berbs ahead of him, for me (despite Fulham's fixtures - 7m is just great value).

HBA.. have exactly the same dilemma, actually.

There's no way on God's Earth that Ben ARCA can be considered good value at 7.8m. This is expensive for a player playing in a top half team in a 433 formation. In a 442, hiss influence is so much less that, Lennon, Pienaar, Sterling, Hoilett/Taarabt, and others are better value.

Yes, I know Newcastle's fixtures are really great soon, but then perhaps we should consider Cabaye? I am, if Pardew sticks to the 442.

tough call IMO I think we'll win 2-1. We tend to start beter away, Rio, Evra and Tony back.

Am away this weekend and will be with a mate who is a Chelsea fan. I rather enjoyed Tuesday. he flew off the handle when I texted him about their result. Yet when we lose he is straight in there 😛

    De Gea, Begovic
    Coloccini, Cuellar, Hughes, Wilson, Olsson/Baines
    Mata, Bale, Michu, Morrison, Sterling
    RVP, Ba, Jelavic/Lambert

    What would you wildcard to?

so ideally, i'd like to get in rooney/rvp from gw11. most likely rooney since he's cheaper, but i'll have to see their pts output before i get them in. i can go cazorla+ba -> 5.7 mid+rooney. the 3 players for 5.7 i'm thinking about taking a punt on is kightly, taraabt or cleverley. what do you think?

i just don't know if cazorla is worth his price. sometimes he seems like an assister to the assist type player. and i think i have to get in rvp or rooney from gw11, as they'll be my capt for their good run of games.

and their form has certainly dipped as well. and after this qpr home game, their fixtures get tough, so i don't think it's the worst idea to get rid of him to get in rvp/rooney

I was set on Bale, but talking to Parm has provided a rethink at this late hour:

    For this week:

    b) Michu and Defoe - bench Pienaar, sell Giroud

Going to do the unpopular and put forth a reason (or two) to back Suarez.

    @eve, NEW, @che, WIG, @swa, @tot, SOT, @whm, AVL, FUL, @sto, @qpr.

He is at the heart of every Liverpool attack and you just got to accept just like the pool, he will frustrate at times, but will probably end up in a respectful position in the rankings come the end.

Plays every minute, just don't put the armband near him.

5 goals and two assists in 8 GW's is not a horrific return rate.

In all comps, he has being quite alright in the goal scoring department, all things considered.

I'm a Liverpool fan, and realistically we're competing for the 5th-7th spots this year. We have enough class to go on good runs, but will flatter to deceive as well.

Imo Suarez will score close enough to say Ba or Tevez this year, when all is done and told.

'just don't put the armband near him'

I can imagine Suarez being close to the most frustrating player to own. 9.6m and you can't even have any faith in him at all. 20 points in one GW suggests he might be worth the armband in certain fixtures...but tbh Liverpool have been pretty poor at times this season and maybe 9.6 is just too much to spend on Suarez...especially given his inconsistency.

An Inconsistent feck who will score well at times, ala Bale in previous seasons.

His price is a sticking point and I guess the question is whether you're willing to stick out the bad days for his good one's.

Id rate other strikers ahead of him around his price bracket, but he ain't the worst and has some upside, so not worth taking a hit on to get rid of as I see some doing.
