Among Stoke’s “jolly green giants,” as Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson referred to the Staffordshire side earlier this month, Peter Crouch stands tallest. Unlike the more robust looking of Stoke’s leviathans such as Robert Huth, however, Crouch’s freakishly long, fragile looking 6 foot 7 inch body means he is too often underestimated as a footballer. This allows his deft touch and at times prolific goal scoring ability to frequently catch teams unaware.

For England, he has scored an impressive 22 goals over his 42 appearances between 2005 and 2010, whilst during his three year spell at Liverpool, which came to an end in 2008, he also scored 22 goals, including a “perfect hat-trick”, with his head, left foot and right foot, against Arsenal in 2007. The previous year Crouch’s assist for Steven Gerrard’s second goal in the FA Cup final proved another highpoint in his career.

It is not just opponents that often underestimate this 31-year-old, though; Fantasy managers are also often too quick to dismiss Crouch.  Owned by just 9.4% of managers in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and 0.8% of managers in the Sky Sports game, he has emerged as a key differential as Stoke’s fixture list significantly improves over the next eight Gameweeks (SUN, nor, QPR, wha, FUL, NEW, wba, avl).

Whilst Stoke’s opening run of games have been among the toughest in the Premier League, Crouch has already performed well, though, accruing 46 points in the FPL game, with four goals, an assist and 11 bonus points to his name. He is now ranked fifth in the FPL game among strikers in terms of total points – only Ba and Fletcher have collected more bonus points thus far.

Slowly but surely Fantasy managers are beginning to look beyond his tall frame and see the genuine footballing prospect that lies beneath. He has risen 0.2m in the FPL game over the last eight weeks, where he is now priced at an affordable 6.7m. Those setting the prices in the Sky game are perhaps less naive about Crouch’s potential and have slapped him with an 8.8 valuation but he could prove to be worth every penny if this lanky titan can continue his fine form over the kind looking schedule ahead.

The major issue surrounding Crouch as a prospect is whether there is room in our three-man FPL forward lines to find a space for the Stoke striker. With the likes of Steven Fletcher, Demba Ba, Dimitar Berbatov and Rickie Lambert all vying for our attention in the low-to-mid-price bracket, there are plenty of viable up front alternatives also to consider over the next few matches.

In addition, having recently favoured a 4-5-1 due to a punishing opening schedule, Tony Pulis is expected to return to a 4-4-2 as the fixtures ease. Jon Walters offers an alternative route if he is moved back up top – classified as a midfielder in FPL and with spot-kick duties also under his belt, the Irishman is also expected to pick up plenty new suitors and could be a better fit for some.

thinking about replacing lambert next week. what do you guys recon?

    a) keep him
    b) ship for crouch
    c) ship for a west brom forward (long? or who?)
    d) ship for someone else 7.2 or less

I think you should monitor how he plays, and more importantly, how Southampton plays when he's on field. I don't know why Nigel benches his main striker, which pretty much is the only hope with 2 other mids for their survival in the PL.

In that case I would consider keeping...as frustrating as it must be at the moment to own him...I think it's better than a switch to Long/Crouch as neither are that explosive anyway and I don't see them as having very favourable fixtures. I would still probably fancy Lambert this week over them.

Panic button? Doubt it. Wenger is stubborn as feck. Watch him continue with Gerv up top.
Wilshere MAY start this weeekend, but Sagna won't displace Jenks for now.

But don't fear, we will beat QPR.

I think Wenger needs to start him now. He's frozen him out due to the contract issue, but we really lack penetration without him, and the 2nd half of last season shows he is starting to learn how to finish. Him and Santi could really cause defences a lot of trouble if they form a good understanding.

If he finally gets the starts he should, I think he's a great FF option.

No way will Jenkinson be there when Sagna is fit. Sagna one of best in the league , the best according to Wenger
They really missing his forward runs. Also they have stopped keeping clean sheets
His return could also be a psychological boost for the rest of the team ,Wenger needs him

we do need Sagna, Jenkinson has been a good back-up (more than I can say than Santos) but he doesn't hold a candle to Sagna, we really need him back in the side to provide some width, same goes for walcott...we've been playing too centrally and defenses just tie up Santi and we can't break them down

I agree, Santos was just woeful last night. Him and Mertesaacker are really being found out and looking like the panic buys they were. I think our starting 11 is decent enough, but our cover in a lot of positions (Manone, Santos, Merte, Ramsey, Coquelin, Chamakh etc) just aren't good enough for a top 4 side.

            ---------Szczesny
            Sagna, Kos, Verm, Gibbs
            -------Arteta, Wilshere/Diaby
            Walcott, Cazorla, Podolski/Gerv
            -------------Giroud

is probably the best we have I think...

FFS watchlist has Huth leading the way for Stoke defensive coverage, along with Begovic. Is he value? Or are you better served going one of the cheaper options in Shawcross or Wilson and use the spare 0.5/1.0m elsewhere?

Like many, looking to potentially double-up on Stoke defence, with Begovic already in the side

    Schwarzer Begovic
    Ivanovic Ridgewell Santon Cuellar Nelsen

It's really about the cover you have for Kolarov. And people are tired of the templates, and need flair. a 20-point haul is not what I'm expecting, but double digit differential points wouldn't hurt once in a month.

That's not the point, but he sure is explosive, he either starts, or he doesn't play at all too. Only been subbed in twice, when they needed to attack. If you can have him without many problems, wouldn't you be tempted yourself? Same goes with Bale, he won't give you those points, but he's nailed on, if you can figure out a way to cover up for Kolarov, I see no harm in having him in the team.

Well he was, just a niggle, might start too, Kolarov's been on the bench for 2 games, and I can't see a reason why even Mancini would start Sinclair over Kolarov on the wings after his performance against Sunderland, which pretty honestly, has a good defense.

        They call it kolarov love...

I think two matches made me fall in love with him. First the spectacular display against Sunderland in the 3-0 win. Second the devastating performance in the community shield against Chelsea. A left winger and a world class one at that.

I appreciate fully he will miss some games. I have looked at how cuellar and demel cover and am satisfied.

Yeah, I looked at how Hughes, Cuellar and Clyne provide cover, well Clyne is Soton, but Cuellar has some good fixtures if you had a good look. Plus City's easy run. I'm pretty much satisfied myself.

    Current team:

    JJ/Bego
    Baines/Rafa/Clark/Gorkss/Nelsen
    Michu/Mata/Santi/Gervinho/Sterling
    RVP/Tevez/Berb

Was thinking of doing this, maybe this is crazy as I know United's fixtures get so much better from GW11 onwards but:

    Save my transfer for GW9.

Then GW10 go Gervinho > Walters + Rafael > Wilson.
    GW11 go Clark > Sagna + Berbatov > Ba for a 4 point hit.

Don't like taking hits but Ba would have WHU, SWA, sou, sto, WIG, ful in his next 6 from that transfer, surely he'd pay that back right?

Would leave me with this side from GW11.

    JJ/Bego
    Baines - Sagna - Wilson - Gorkss - Nelsen
    Michu - Mata - Santi - Walters - Sterling
    RVP - Tevez - Ba

    Thoughts?

    Righto kids ... and Doosra!

I've got 5.2 to spend on a defender, backline looks like this:

    Begovic | Foster
Demel | Jenkinson | Baines | Cuellar | Rangel (soon to be replaced)

I was thinking on doubling up on Stoke with perhaps Wilson or Shawcross, or possibly a Newcastle defender given their upcoming run of fixtures.

Pergaps a penny for your thoughts please?

Not really perfect, just a hope of a CS in 3, maybe 2 of them. Without the attacking points. And if city start playing like they did against, well, Sunderland for starters, Kolarov's CS should be more likely too.
