Our final glance at Gameweek 9 sees us focus on Cityโ€™s consistent Argentine, the flourishing attacking form offered by Fulham and whether “chasing points” is an act of folly or necessity…

The Player

Prior to last Saturday evening, heโ€™d gone without a goal since Gameweek 3 and with Sergio Agueroโ€™s recent return casting doubts over his ability to produce the points, Carlos Tevez had suffered a substantial drop in FPL ownership, with his price slipping from 9.9 to 9.4. Cityโ€™s stuttering attack has hardly helped his cause either; the champions have notched just 18 times so far, 15 goals less than they had registered by the same point last year.

While Aguero failed to flatter in the 1-0 win over Swansea and Edin Dzeko warmed the bench in spite of his recent heroics, Tevez provided the vital spark in what was a dire display by the hosts โ€“ post-match, his manager acknowledged the playerโ€™s importance to the City cause:

“Carlos played very well against West Brom and again today. He worked very hard and I am very pleased for him. He scored a good goal at an important time and is a vital player for this team.”

Looking beyond the recent goal drought and itโ€™s obvious that Tevez has offered a consistency that has been hard to mirror. He has produced attacking returns in seven of his eight starts this term and has racked up four goals and six assists thus far; with 64 points he is neck and neck with Robin Van Persie at the top of the FPL forward leaderboard.

Crucially for Fantasy managers, Tevez, like Van Persie, offers a preferred route to City’s attacking returns with Aguero’s claims hindered by a loftier price tag. While Aguero has the potential for more explosive returns, Tevez, judging by Manciniโ€™s endorsement, clearly remains an integral part of the City set-up and his match-winner has caught more than just Manciniโ€™s eye; already, he is the most transferred in forward this Gameweek ahead of a trip to former club West Ham, in what will be an emotional return to Upton Park for the Argentine. Given his displays so far, thereโ€™s every chance he could break the Hammersโ€™ hearts as City go looking for their fifth straight win next Saturday.

The Team

The departure of Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele this summer had initially looked like serving a real blow to Fulhamโ€™s prospects but Martin Jolโ€™s side have regrouped and continue to offer Fantasy managers reasons to be cheerful.

A share of the spoils in the six-goal thriller at Reading last Saturday took the Cottagersโ€™ goal tally to 19 already โ€“ only Chelsea and United have found the net more often. Furthermore, Jol has finally addressed Fulhamโ€™s inability to score on the road โ€“ the Dutchmanโ€™s debut campaign produced a mere 12 away goals all season but already, they have notched nine in just five games, scoring two or more on four occasions.

Perhaps surprisingly, given their offensive menace, itโ€™s Damien Duff and John Arne Riise who lead the way for FPL points at Fulham; with 42 and 40 respectively, there are clearly alternatives right throughout a side that looks simply full of goals right now.

Granted, Dimitar Berbatov looks nailed-on up top should be remain injury-free but, with Bryan Ruiz, Hugo Rodallega and Mladen Petric all offering alternatives, the Cottagers boss admitted he is still uncertain over his best front pairing.

“What is my best forward line? That is still my problem – and it’s already October. Ruiz is probably my most creative player but on the other hand Berbatov is a very good second striker. But it was good to see Ruiz coming on and changing our style, even though we looked fine first half. Ruiz and Berbatov never played together before. I feel that Berba is not a typical No.9 and that is why I’m playing Rodallega because he has pace and he stretches defences.”

Bearing in mind that aforementioned quartet have all scored between 25-31 FPL points so far, it leaves us with something of a quandary should it be confirmed that Berbatov has suffered a broken rib to make him a doubt for the weekend meet with Everton. Berbatov offers assured coverage of a Fulham side bristling with attacking threat but, for those without the Bulgarian and with their forward lines settled, a nod to Duff, with three goals and two assists so far, may well be a decent alternative given the apparent goal power of Jol’s outfit this term.

The Talking Point

Sometimes the line between chasing points and snapping up a player due to undeniably strong form can be a fine one. A couple of eye-catching displays can sway even the steeliest of Fantasy managers to acquire the services of certain individuals even when logic can, at times, suggest we hold firm. The continued form of Juan Mata is a classic example. Having been rested in the Gameweek 4 trip to QPR, the Spaniard was sitting with a 8.9 FPL price tag and with team mate Eden Hazard hoovering up the points, few would have predicted what was to come.

A stunning free-kick against United yesterday once again produced the points and means that Mata has now outscored the Belgian in four of the past five Gameweeks. Hazardโ€™s returns have been more than respectable, though; he has accrued 28 points over the last five fixtures and has maintained his lead at the top of the FPL midfield standings but Mata has now produced 54 points over the equivalent fixtures, with four goals and five assists to Hazardโ€™s goal and three assists. Many Hazard owners will argue that Mata simply cannot maintain such levels but while Hazardโ€™s price has held steady at 10.3, Mata has now risen to 9.3 and with double figure returns in each of his last two away games, heโ€™s likely to receive significant investment ahead of next Saturdayโ€™s deadline.

The same applies to another couple of likely protagonists, Demba Ba and Luis Suarez. Baโ€™s opener against West Brom means he has now played a part in eight of Newcastleโ€™s 11 strikes, with seven goals and an assist, while Suarez has finally stepped up for Liverpool. The Uruguayan has had a hand in nine of Liverpoolโ€™s 12 goals, finding the net six times in addition to supplying three assists โ€“ can the duo continue to produce at the same rate?

Clearly, both are looking integral to their teamโ€™s chances but we only need to look to last season to see that the pair are more than capable of returning blanks aplenty. Non-owners have a quandary โ€“ do we cast aside our doubts and grab them while the going is good or ride out their current form and hope the returns will hit a decline, whilst scouring the market for lesser-owned alternatives?

While plenty of options are offered elsewhere, their respective displays are becoming more difficult to overlook as the Gameweeks go by and, in the case of Ba and Suarez, “chasing points” in hope of continued form, could be a fruitful tactic.

He did have a lot of shots off target which pretty much cancel out his goal. Have to admit,I wasn't expecting 3 but at least 1 or 2. Even Yaya, Gallas and Baines getting points show that it's hard to predict

+1 although I don't fancy Bale too much after next week. Straight swap to Silva if he leaves 1mil or so spare. I would consider Lallana or Ramirez for Southampton and Morisson off West Brom for the long run.

After the Arsenal fixture, and before the City fixture, and despite United currently sitting top of their Champions League table with 100% points, what do you guys consider Fergie will do with his strikeforce? Rest Rooney and RVP as much as possible in the league/Champions League, or let them run riot with intention of them carrying form into tougher fixtures? Surely Hernandez has earned himself a run of games now and be worth a punt on?

I would not be surprised if Chelsea end up getting Torres suspended for violent conduct by having an investigation in the United game incidents. http://therepublikofmancunia.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Torres-Cleverley2.png

I did not see the game myself, and this was not on the highlights I saw. Now I dont understand at all what all the Che fans are moaning about. That should have been a straight red anyway.

you didnt see the incident! there was contact. therefore he should never have been given yellow for diving.

I cant stand Torres and want him out of Chelsea ASAP but even so the referee had a nightmare. Did you see offside goal from Hernandez???

Yes it was pure offside, and that was not a second yellow IMO either. What I am saying is Torres should have never been on the pitch at that moment anyway(since if you look at that picture, that is a clear red) and Chelsea should have had less players for a longer period.

Referee did not call the offside, nor was he in a position to do so, and the linesman had a hard decision to make if you look at it real time from his POV. There was the slightest of contact and it was a foul, but Torres has only brung it upon himself with his reputation for diving, and the referee does not have super slow motion replays embedded in his brain. Grow up.

I apologise for seemingly getting personal, but what the hell are referees to do in those situations? And for people to expect anything more than being human and trusting their line of sight then they need to grow up. In his line of sight he saw no contact, so he made the right decision in that context, he can do no more. You didn't say much to provoke this reaction from me I'm sorry for that but when see and hear countless people suggesting Clattenberg and Fergie like to Lemon Party it gets annoying, and your comment, as non-noxious as it was set me off.

Probably best not to get personal, especially when there is a weakness in your own point.

You cannot give diving punishments unless you are absolutely certain. If Clattenburg was certain, that frankly reveals a bias to me.

you do know you can still be booked for diving even if there is contact, simulation means his reaction was exagerated beyond the level of contact involved.

+1 bad call by the ref. For the protection of Suarez I think he only wanted to clip him( not that this makes any difference)

OK, so with my luck, Ba won't play GW10... so the question is, bench or sell?

From GW11 he has a nice overall short run of:
WEST HAM SWANSEA southampton stoke WIGAN

but will he be back for West Ham? That's the ponder.

I am selling for Defoe if that is the case, and getting him in the week after if fit. I think it could be worth it, Defoe loves a hattrick against Wigan ๐Ÿ˜‰

      Hi guys!

My biggest mistake was ditching RVP and getting Cazorla in ๐Ÿ™

I would like to rectify it. What is the best way to do it and when?

havent done calculations but, would get shot of
kolarov (too much money to sit on bench and hope he does something on rare starts)
carz (least value for money out of all mids in your team)
fletch (just isnt going to produce as much as ba or berb)

SOlution for GW10 possibly is just to ditch Berab/Fletcher/Ba + Cazorla for RVP + Maloney for a 4 point hit it seems. I just wanna know whether Ba and /or Berba are injured before ditching Fletcher. Thoughts?

                      Will rectify Kolarov later.

My team has been treading water for weeks, and thinking of an 8 pt hit today otherwise I can't afford it.

          IN
Mata (no other CHL coverage in my team)
          Tevez
          Ba

          OUT
          Gervinho
Giroud (that two game punt worked well....ahem)
          Aquero

Also got Wilson injured now but that can wait a week.

          Rest of team

          Begovic / Foster
          Baines / Rafael / Cuellar / Wilson / Davies
          Bale / Sterling / Maloney / Michu
          RVP

          Any thoughts appreciated.

Normally, I'd be anti 8 point hit, but those moves look pretty solid. I would maybe consider getting Oscar for Gervinho and Ba for Giroud if that works financially. Aguero is still a great option even though he didn't have a good game against Swansea. I prefer Mata to Oscar, but only just. You'll be starting + 4 points if you choose Oscar.

-8 is a last resort for me too.

I've held Aquero since he came back and returns off the bench are not doing it for me. So he's the route into the Chelsea midfield. Oscar isn't delivering and isn't on set pieces so feel I need to jump to Mata before its too late. 0.1m short of that two player swap in any case.

I can do -4 for now and wait and see on Ba. That makes sense.
