Once again we roll out the weekly regular to assess the “strength of schedule” over the next four to six Gameweeks. With confidence flowing after Gameweek 12 victories, both Sunderland and Southampton will be buoyed by some enticing home matches on the horizon, while United and Arsenal also square up to potentially prosperous fixtures. On the flipside, Everton and West Ham look set for rough rides, with Chelsea and City also provided with stern short-term tests….

Sunderland

An upturn in fixtures coincides with a confidence-boosting win at Fulham for the Black Cats. With four home games in the next four, including a double Gameweek 16 (WBA, QPR, nor, CHE & RDG), many Fantasy managers will be prepared to snap up one or two of Sunderland’s assets. Certainly, their home defensive form suggests returns could be on the cards – they have conceded three goals in four matches at the Stadium of Light this term, a fact that will no doubt see Simon Mignolet, Carlos Cuellar and Phil Bardsley propelled onto Fantasy radars.

Up top, Steven Fletcher’s goal and assist at the Cottage will reignite faith in his attacking potential. With six goals and an assist over his 10 appearances, he has played a part in 70% of his side’s goals and has averaged six FPL points per game so far. Adam Johnson, with attacking returns in each of his last two, is starting to hint at a step up in form, while Stephane Sessegnon’s superb strike served a reminder of the displays that harvested seven goals and 12 assists last term.

Southampton

Four points from their last two leads Nigel Adkins’ outfit into a crucial run which sees them face three home games in the next four. The Saints welcome Newcastle, Norwich and Reading to St Mary’s and having stepped up with a win at QPR last Saturday, they will surely be in confident mood ahead of the Magpies’ visit this weekend.

While the backline continue to concede in every match played so far, investment further up the field looks a potentially prosperous ploy. Jason Puncheon seems to have cemented a role on the right once again – his goal and assist at Loftus Road, allied with a 4.5 FPL price tag, has earned him plenty new suitors already. Adam Lallana and Gaston Ramirez are options in the mid-price bracket, while Rickie Lambert has produced a goal and assist over the last couple of Gameweeks and looks to be hitting edging back to form at the right time.

Man United

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side will be desperate to bounce back from the shock defeat at Norwich last Saturday and are afforded the perfect opportunity, as basement-dwellers QPR roll up to Old Trafford this weekend. United then have two home games in the following four, with West Ham and Sunderland also paying visit, and with a trip to Reading also on their agenda, the omens look good.

Robin Van Persie seems a strong captaincy contender across those fixtures – having been rested for the midweek Champions League match against Galatasaray, the Dutchman will be fresh and raring to go after a rare blank at Carrow Road, while Wayne Rooney is also expected to return, after tonsillitis kept him out on Saturday. Rafael’s owners will be hoping he can pick up attacking returns, with clean sheets looking beyond the Red Devils right now, while Antonio Valencia – with no returns in the last three – is handed the platform to produce the goods again.

Swansea

Buoyed by a weekend win at Newcastle, Michael Laudrup’s side face three fixtures in front of their own fans over the next four before the schedule starts to stiffen. The Swans welcome Liverpool, West Brom and Norwich to the Liberty and also have a trip to Arsenal in their agenda – while the trio of home matches may not be the easiest, Michu’s owners will be happy to hold. An injury to Ki Sung-Yeung forced a reshuffle which saw the Spaniard drop back into “the hole” for the St James’ Park match and he duly obliged with the opener. Having found the net in four of his six appearances at the Liberty, his appeal is obvious.

Pablo Hernandez continues to offer a midfield alternative to his compatriot. The former Valencia man has scored in each of his last two at home and with an assist last weekend, has averaged six points per game over the last five fixtures, while Jonathan de Guzman has outgunned Michu 25 to 23 over the last five Gameweeks and is another on-song midfielder for Laudrup right. At the back, however, Swansea’s run of no clean sheets in 10 is indicative of their lack of defensive resilience.

Also Consider

Aston Villa – three home games in the next four affords Paul Lambert’s side to bounce back from their 5-0 Etihad thrashing. While the visit of Arsenal may prove problematic, the midlanders also welcome Reading and Stoke, with a trip to QPR sandwiched in between. Christian Benteke, with attacking returns in three of the last four, looks the obvious option for Fantasy managers on the search for a mid-price forward differential, though Andreas Weimann’s brace against United suggests he could come to the fore if he continues to nail down a starting berth.

Arsenal – the Gunners may have only two home clashes in the next six but, aside from a Gameweek 14 trip to Everton, their schedule seems more than favourable. Visits to Villa, Reading and Wigan should hold little fear for the north London outfit, while home clashes against Swansea and West Brom offer the chance to get their bid for a top four spot back on track. Santi Cazorla’s owners will be more than content to hold, bearing in mind his best points hauls have come on the road, while Olivier Giroud, Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott have all produced returns in their last two. The latter has been sidelined for Arsenal’s Champions League clash with Montpellier due to a shoulder problem, though, suggesting he may be a doubt for Saturday’s trip to Villa.

Tottenham – Four defeats in five have lowered expectations around the Lane but Andre Villas-Boas’ side are now set to face four home games in the next six. Much may depend on the return of Moussa Dembele – Spurs had previously won all four of the games the Belgian has started and his presence in central midfield is clearly crucial to his side’s prospects. Nevertheless, with West Ham, Liverpool, Swansea and Stoke all paying visit, faith in Gareth Bale will remain resolute, while Jermain Defoe is set to start at least the next three after Emmanuel Adebayor’s red card at Arsenal.

The Weak

Everton

A kind opening schedule has helped David Moyes’ side banish their customary slow start and edge their way into fifth spot but the fixture list is about to turn sticky for the Toffees. Everton entertain the league’s in-form defence this weekend, as Norwich make their way to Goodison, and while that is unlikely to worry their Fantasy owners too much, the Merseysiders also face Arsenal and Spurs at home, with tricky trips to City, Stoke and West Ham also between now and Gameweek 18.

Marouane Fellaini’s one-match suspension this weekend is already seeing him sold on by significant numbers, while many are starting to question the worth of Leighton Baines, with the Toffees registering just two clean sheets all season. Bearing in mind they sit second in FPL for midfielders and defenders respectively, getting rid doesn’t come without risk – they did, after all, produce 19 points between them again United earlier this term. With one goal in his last five, though, Nikica Jelavic’s owners will also be pondering his value over the new few fixtures.

West Ham

There’s simply no let-up for the Hammers over the next few Gameweeks as the schedule continues to look ridden with danger. Unbeaten in their last three, Sam Allardyce’s side are in decent form but now face four of the top five in the next six Gameweeks. Up next are back-to-back trips to Spurs and United and with a visit to West Brom supplemented by home showdowns against Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton, the festive period could be set to bite hard.

Kevin Nolan’s Fantasy owners will be a little apprehensive, bearing in mind he has now produced attacking returns in one of his last four at Upton Park, while a single clean sheet in five home games may have Jussi Jaaskelainen’s owners on edge. Plenty will now get rid of Guy Demel, with two brief sub appearances and the displays of Joey O’Brien keeping him on the periphery of the Hammers first XI.

West Brom

Steve Clarke’s side have just one home fixture in the next four – a tricky Hawthorns clash with neighbours Stoke. The Baggies are on their travels three times, then, with visits to Sunderland, Swansea and Arsenal on their short-term agenda before the schedule starts to smile a little kinder in Gameweek 17. With a single clean sheet in their last seven, faith in West Brom’s backline hasn’t been rewarded in recent matches, though James Morrison has shown a consistency on his travels, producing attacking returns in two of his last three on the road. Shane Long’s owners have reason to be wary; although he has scored or assisted in all seven home appearances, Long has produced attacking returns just once away from home this season.

Also Be Wary Of

Man City – there’s no denying the champions have picked up in performance since the return of David Silva but the next four Gameweeks affords them a single straightforward fixture. While a trip to Wigan looks prosperous, Roberto Mancini’s side also square up to three of the top five, with a trip to Chelsea in addition to home showdowns against Everton and Man United. A defence that has conceded once in the last four is likely to struggle to replicate such returns, though Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez owners won’t be too concerned, given their upcoming opponents’ recent defensive records.

Chelsea – without a win in their last four, Roberto Di Matteo’s side welcome City and then neighbours Fulham to the Bridge; both look tricky for a defence that has conceded in each of the last seven Gameweeks and remain without the steadying influence of John Terry. Chelsea then travel to West Ham and Sunderland before a blank Gameweek 17 – Juan Mata and Eden Hazard owners will be hoping for an upturn in attacking displays from a Blues side that have scored just three times in the last three Gameweeks.

Any suggestions? I'm a bit stumped as to what to do this week (BANK = £2.2m, 1 free transfer) -

    Begovic(FUL)
    Rafael(QPR) Cuellar(WBA) Baines(NOR)
    Bale(WHU) Silva(che) Sterling(swa) Maloney(RDG)
    Ba(sou) Van Persie(QPR) Berbatov(sto)

subs - Foster, Santon, Demel, Fellaini

Save it? Get rid of Demel, Santon or maybe even Berba?

looks good, i'd save it. you might want to ship demel out as his fixtures are awful til the new year and hasn't regained his place. but its an unnecessary transfer as next week you might want to do something and the 2 free trannies could help.

I agree, it does feel a bit unnecessary to ship out Demel, especially as i have a 0.1 buffer so he can even drop in price. He can probably sit on my bench for a few weeks.

2 frees are always nice 🙂

Consider Berba to Giroud? See if he starts tomorrow first, obviously.

I think I'd save the transfer then upgrade Maloney next week, or downgrade further giving you the option to see whether Suarez is 'essential'.

Giroud is a tempter.... but i'm not sure i can spend a valuable striker spot on him! Feels like i'm going to HAVE to have Suarez by GW15 at the latest and i'll probably want to play him with Ba and RVP. Giroud has 2 away games in that period. Feel more inclined to take a punt on someone with 2 home games in GWs 13 & 14

I think he has a chance, yes.

The only striker I'd want more than him in that team is Suarez, and you can't afford him this week anyway. With two frees you'll have room to get him or do some other sweet move easier next week.

The Berbs always give you that chance. Being on pens doesn't hurt either!

Yep Suarez is of course the one i want although i can't manage that without a 4 point him. Seems a bit risky.

Waiting another week will also give me more time to assess Ba and Newcastle if (as expected) they move back to a 4-3-3. Will Ba be back out on the left? Or will Cisse be dropped and Ba played centrally with HBA and perhaps Sammy Ameobi flanking him?

Yeah. Benching Berbatov may be a silly move. But one goal from Berba will eliminate the CS points from Begovic and Cameron while CS from both of them will only gives me 2 pts from Berba.
Is there any other way I could select my GK and defender. Maybe play Foster and Riise instead of Begovic and Cameron?

I undetstand your logic, but its faulty. You have to pick the players that you think has the best chance of scoring the most points, not doing one thing because of this and that and the other. If i were you, i`d always play the keeper @ home unless the away keepers fixture is superior. In this case, its not. WBA concede often on the road, Stoke hardly concedes @ home. Then again, Fulham almost always scores, hence Berba in. In conclusion i would start Begovic, Riise and Berba simply because of the higher point potential.

Nailed on, i think. Question is will he remain on the wing or go back in centrally. I thought Cattermole played outstandingly against Fulham, and i thought that was partially because of the assistance he got from Colback in that area. If i were to scoop for Sunderland coverage, i guess AJ is the way to go. Im not sure how much Sessegnon costs these days, but im guessing hes a little too expensive to be like a 5th mid kind of guy. Well AJ is too expensive for that as well so never mind lol

Want to invest, thinking about doing it this week. However, i think i will wait and see their performance against WBA and see if their offencive challenges are really behind them. Still not convinced after a 3G perfomance vs a 10 man Fulham squad.

Outplayed really. Looked good in the first half but lacked any finishing touch. Not surprising when you don't play a striker. They played Hazard up top to dribble around and hold it up. Clearly were playing for a draw and it backfired.

They were poor as a team. Rolled out in a Spain-esque formation with no forwards. Couldnt really judge Mata from that game, Juve was just too good on the day. That said, i dont think Chelsea will do particularly well in the next month or so, and they have hit that slump of form that atleast i was waiting for.

Perhaps a bit unlucky with the way those two went in, but they werent unlucky to lose the game. Juventus absolutely controlled the game and Chelsea provided all but nothing all game. Like i said pre-season and earlier this season, they wont win the league with Torres up front and RDM on the sidelines.

Came on last 20 or so i believe. RDM/Chelsea are already paying the price of almost no squad rotation. Theyve started Oscar/Hazard/Mata almost every game when theyve all been fit, and they have no alternative to Torres. Its just bad club management, and ive seen it before from RDM as well.

They are drastically short in the midfield ... missing Lampard for sure but they have no depth. And no strikers ... just Torres and Sturridge, who are both prone on a bad day!

Basically they have only Mikel to play CDM now that they went and sold Meireles (another completely clueless sale btw), and with Lamps out its Ramires who has to step in. Offensively they do have some depth, with Marin and Moses, but its just lately that Moses has been seeing some minutes. Loaning Lukaku to WBA for the season was another HUGE mistake imo. I honestly cant understand the thought process.

Theres always a chance, although i dont see it happening vs City. The league is more important, and i reckon they feel they can beat Nordskjelland at home regardless of Mata`s contribution.

Kind of a different story with City/Aguero. They have Balotelli/Tevez/Dzeko to put in. Chelsea have literally only Moses, and he`s not half the player Mata is, no disrespect to the man. And, its Chelsea-City. RDM surely will roll out all his top dogs for this one.

Im guessing he wanted more pace on the wingback, and Verthongen is better than Caulker, and Gallas is their captain.

Caulker/Verthongen is their best pairing imo, Gallas has been poor all season. Have no idea if thats what he`ll choose once BAE is fit, kind of thinking he`ll stick with Gallas because thats the kind of guy AVB seems to be.

Are we thinking 4-3-3 from Newcastle this weekend? With Cisse dropping to the bench and Ba starting centrally flanked by HBA and perhaps Sammy Ameobi?

I can't see how they can justify starting Ba wide left again if they do switch to 4-3-3 (and i think they definitely will btw) and Cisse certainly won't play there. So i reckon it's either drop Cisse or stay as a 4-4-2.

Question is who will play wide left? I reckon Sammy Ammy might be given a chance. Of course if he starts on Tursday perhaps not but i fully expect Cisse to start against Maritimo

Sammy had a pretty poor game against Swansea I thought. I watched the whole thing and he looked really naive at times in his decision making.

I agree, I'd say Cisse will start to give him a game for fitness against Maritimo.

On the change of formation, nothing is certain so maybe they will just continue with 4-4-2. The reason I think they most certainly won't put Cisse up top on his own is that Ba is the only one scoring and Newcastle have lost 2 in a row. To start messing about and putting Ba anywhere else would be a poor move. Especially putting Cisse there, who has no form whatsoever to speak of.

Well Pardew has rolled out complete reserve teams for every EL game thus far, so i feel pretty certain about Cissè starting and not starting this weekend. He also said something about 4-3-3 beeing great for them last year and after the Swansea game he felt that this was maybe something they needed to get back to. Honestly, HBA is wasted playing 4-4-2, but probably top 3 wingers in the league playing 4-3-3.

With Cabaye out, HBA is Pardew's only option to play in the hole. Barfa won't be playing on the flanks if Pardew returns to the 4-3-3; I can guarantee you that.

Never. I agree with Psychobingo. The whole front 3 flourished in that 4-3-3 but the biggest problem was that Ba hated playing second fiddle and being shunted out to the left. Pardew has tried to keep both Cisse and Ba happy by playing 4-4-2 but the whole team and style of play has suffered as a result.

BUT Ba has still been banging in a his fair share of goals, Cisse? Not so much. Can Pardew convince Demba to go back out to the left for the good of the team? It's that or drop Cisse

Yeah we`re pretty much on the same page here. Even though Ba was topscorer last season and is so far this season as well, HBA is their best player, by far. I even rate Cabaye over Ba when it comes to team importance, and in the 4-3-3 HBA really can flourish freely on the wings, and Cabaye can move around more as well supported by Tiotè/Jonas. The reason he pushed Ba out wide last year was because Cissè just couldnt stop scoring, and Ba was useful in the buildup play, combined with the lack of alternatives. Even though they havent brought anyone in to play LW, i still think he`ll revert to the 4-3-3 this weekend. Besides, i think Ba plays better when he`s a lone striker.

Read my post above. With Cabaye out long term, HBA is Pardew's ONLY option in the hole.

The Toon have multiple options out on the flanks: Sammy, Jonas, Marveaux, Obertan, Ba.

I disagree. Pardew doesnt really favour formations with someone in the hole. Jonas isnt really a flank option, neither is Ba at the minute. Imo HBA is top 3 wingers in this league, and surely if i can see that so can Pardew, would REALLY surprise me if he didnt play 4-3-3 going forward.

Also, you say no way HBA will play on the wings? Seriously? Thats his best position by far. Jonas is nothing like a 4-3-3 winger. If they revert to 4-3-3 Jonas will surely play as one of the middle 3.

DGW is a few weeks down the road, and before scoring on a 10-man Fulham he hadnt scored in how long, 5 games? 6? Sure Newcastle arent on form, theyre still producing more than Sunderland. IF i were you, id just do one of the defender to a Reading/Sunderland one, and save the other transfer for later.

can't make up my mind. Which do you guys think looks better? Lambert to long or pienaar to sterling?

Yeah, Norwich have improved drastically defensively, think they even have 3 CS in the last 4. That said, Pienaar/Everton @ home generally always produce tons of chances and multiple goals, and Norwich have already conceded 4-5 goals a couple of times this season. I`d give Pienaar this week.

I still can't get over Silva scoring 16 points this week. I was hoping he'd stay quiet for a little while and there he goes and does that. And the fact he got two assists from two 'handballs' just rubs it in a bit. I mean I'd be fine with him doing his usual genius through balls/crosses but that's taking the mick.

It almost feels like a false dawn to me too. I don't think he will ever top that score this year. And I think it's making his allure stronger than it should be. It's a bit like Hazard though getting fouled and someone scoring the free kick/penalty. I suppose these skillful players are always forcing errors from defenders.

I kind of agree, but not entirely. I think Silva is essential for City if they are to win the league again. None of their other midfielders can match his creativity. Repeating the fantastic numbers he had last year will defo be hard, especially since he`s been injured already. This getting an assist when you get fouled and they score a free-kick is something i dont really care for. Wish they just did something like +1 point for penalty earned or something like that.

That was so garbage when Ashley Young and Rooney got assists against Arsenal with the FKs lol. I guess I'd agree it would be more suiting to give a point. At least for PKs like UCL, regardless of them making it or not.

Yeah. I just think its completely unfair that a player getting fouled should count as an assist. But whatever, its the way the game is set up. Generally, players getting fouled in dangerous positions are players you would want in your team anyway

I don't know. I think it's fair enough albeit a bit frustrating that it's not a 'pure' assisted goal.

I think if you win a penalty it should count as a proper assist because you have earned the goalscorer a chance to score. Which is the same as if you passed it through to them to tap it in. The free kicks one is a little dubious though.

I agree, Silva is essential to City's success.

I just think that game flattered all of their players if you get me? Two penalties (one which should not have been given)

All of last year Silva never got a goal and 2 assists in one game. He basically got his best score ever this weekend. That's why I'm annoyed about it as everyone is going to jump on him and his price will rise so quickly. I was hoping he'd stay unnoticed for a bit by casuals.

I agree, hash penalty. Luckily City only needed one goal to win it. I would feel terrible for Villa.

Hey, maybe it's a good thing because Tevez is far from rising atm and I think he'll benefit from Silva and Aguero and possibly get more points than both of them.

Keen observation. Benfica fan myself. Salvio played for SL Benfica on loan from Atletico Madrid two seasons ago and made an immediate impact. Manager Jorge Jesus said he'd like to have Salvio permenantly and the club acknowledged. He has speed, above average skill, crosses well and is strong 1vs1. He's the main reason Gaitan isn't playing more often as opposed to last season. He would be a good signing for Liverpool but needs to build up strength for EPL and SL Benfica are tenacious negotiators. 😉

What is he supposed to do with a crap form Torres? I'd at least give him until after the transfer window.

Why? It was his decision to let Lukaku go. It was his decision to let Meireles go. Not maintaining squad depth at a top side is just suicidal, and i believe RDM will pay the price soon enough.
