Twelve Gameweeks into the season and it’s something of an understatement to suggest Southampton have been far from impressive since their top-flight return. Nigel Adkins’ side have leaked goals in alarming numbers and sit second bottom of the table, with just nine points to their name thus far, but the past couple of matches have suggested they are finally starting to gel as a side:

Prior to last week’s home clash with Swansea, the Saints had conceded less than two goals on one occasion this term but have now managed that feat in back-to-back Gameweeks. Granted, a draw and a win in their last two is a little early for optimism but it is, nevertheless, the longest they have gone unbeaten in the league so far.

Cork v Davis

The upturn in performance has coincided with the return from injury of Jack Cork alongside Morgan Schneiderlin in the centre of midfield earlier this month. Sidelined with knee and ankle problems, the former Chelsea man had previously failed to feature in the top-flight this term, with his absence affording Steven Davis the chance to stake a claim as a regular.

After Saturday’s win at QPR, Adkins was unsparing in his praise of the midfielder’s performance as he watched his side battle their way to victory in the crucial bottom-of-the-table encounter with QPR:

“He (Cork) was yet again outstanding – him and Morgan Schneiderlin together. I played Jack Cork in every game after I signed him last season. He was called up for the Great Britain team for the Olympics which is a great honour obviously but we didn’t have him for pre-season. He came back and in his first game he got injured, he came back after that and got injured straightaway in his comeback game. We’ve not had an opportunity to have Jack Cork and Morgan Schneiderlin together until now. They are two young 23-year-olds who I believe have got so much potential and we can get a good partnership going with them.”

Comparing the vital statistics of Cork and Davis in the centre of midfield, the former’s influence in front of the back-four is already obvious. In terms of involvement and distribution, he has averaged almost 20 touches per game more than Davis (80 to 60.6) and while the pair are virtually identical for passes received, Cork has been far more efficient in quickly moving the ball on, making 57 passes to Davis’ 46.3, with 48 to 39.8 successful passes per game.

Steven Davis60.639.246.339.844.4%63.6%1.55.71.0

When it comes to defensive work, Cork has won 71.4% of aerial duels, far superior to Davis’ 44.4%, and has also bettered his successful tackle ratio, by 75% to 63.6%. He has made more interceptions (2 to 1.5), recoveries (9 to 5.7) and clearances (1.5 to 1.0) per game, highlighting his worth to the side. Clearly, Cork’s deep-lying role is not going to bring home the Fantasy points but it’s the extra combative edge he gives the midfield over Davis, in addition to his understanding with Schneiderlin, that has resultantly boosted the potential of the Saints’ attacking assets.

Southampton v QPR
Southampton v WBA

With the pair sitting in front of the back-four, Southampton’s 4-2-3-1 shape is clear in Saturday’s match (left). Cork (18) and Schneiderlin (4) are content to stay deep, with Jason Puncheon (42) and Adam Lallana (20) pushing high up on the right and left respectively in support of Rickie Lambert (7).

Their previous away game (right) at West Brom looks far less defined. Adkins rolled out a 4-4-2, with Davis (8) more advanced than Schneiderlin (4) in the middle and while Jay Rodriguez (9) was fielded on the right wing, his tendency to drop deep and into central areas offsets the side’s balance.

Puncheon Comparison

The winger’s goal and assist at QPR, supplemented by a couple of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points, has already seen his priced rise from 4.4 to 4.5 this week, with plenty prepared to jump aboard the cut-price bandwagon. Granted, Mark Hughes’ side are bottom of the table for a reason and while we’re reining in our expectations, the average position maps over the last two games, compared to his previous appearances, shows just how far forward Jason Puncheon has been in possession.

Puncheon GW1-10
Puncheon GW11-12

The statistics more than back up his displays over the last two. Although Puncheon’s average game time between Gameweeks 1-10 and 11-12 was lower (73.1 minutes per appearances to 95), the figures take a significant jump. Over his last two matches, Puncheon has averaged 40.5 touches in the final third, virtually double his previous 20.7. For Passes received in this crucial area, he is again just shy of registering twice the tally (23.5 to 12), while the same applies to successful passes made in the final third, with 18 to 9.7 highlighting his upturn in distribution closer to goal.

Puncheon GW 1-1073.120.7129.731.9139.40.92.6

His more advanced position has helped him to five touches in the box per game – he had previously averaged three, while his attempts on goal have almost trebled, up from 1.9 to 5.5. Crucially, it’s not all speculative long-range efforts, either; 2.5 attempts have been in the box, up from a previous season average of one. This equates to 17.3 minutes per shot, superior to the Gameweek 1-10 figure of 39.4. Intriguingly, the number of chances created has almost halved, down from 0.9 to 0.5 –now that he is seeing more of the ball closer to goal, Puncheon is looking to find the net rather than tee up a team mate. An upturn in attempted dribbles, from 2.6 to four, highlights a player with flourishing self-belief right now.

Again, it’s no surprise to see the winger’s display was talked up by his manager post-match:

“He’s been working hard. He’s had a good pre-season and again it’s about that consistency…he’s scored a great goal and could have scored three or four more. He worked hard for the team as did everybody – it was a real good all round performance, but there’ll talk about Puncheon and maybe one or two others.”

A Look at Lallana

Finally, we take a glance at the displays of Adam Lallana over the past couple of games and compare them to a select batch of premium Fantasy midfielders. While Puncheon’s weekend returns have picked up plenty new investors, Lallana has failed to produce a goal or assist in his last four but his statistics have been superb – although they haven’t been translated to Fantasy points, his owners will be more than happy to hold.

Hazard10453527113
Silva957153793
Cazorla735045371
Valencia936353341

Between Gameweeks 11-12, only one midfielder, Eden Hazard, had more touches (104) in the final third than the Saints man, who managed to equal David Silva’s 95. While the City playmaker leads the way for passes received in the final third, with 71, Lallana’s total of 58 is bettered only by one other midfielder, United’s Antonio Valencia, with 63. For successful passes made in the final third, once again Lallana features in the top five; only the aforementioned trio of Valencia (53), Silva (53) and Hazard (52) have marginally made more.

In terms of chances created, Silva and Hazard, with seven apiece, have bettered Lallana’s five, though this is still superior to Santi Cazorla and Valencia, who both managed to provide three goalscoring opportunities for team mates. When it comes to touches in the box, though, Lallana excels – his total of 18 over the last two Gameweeks is joint-top with Hatem Ben Arfa and leaves the likes of Hazard (11) and Silva (nine) trailing in his wake. Interestingly, Gaston Ramirez also impresses here – his 13 is bettered only by Lallana and Ben Arfa.

For total shots over the last couple, Puncheon’s 11 tops the charts, though Lallana and Ramirez sit joint fifth, with five apiece; further illustration of the plentiful potential from Adkins’ attacking midfield trio. Lallana’s tally of three efforts from inside the box again fare well when compared to our other featured players, equalling both Hazard and Silva.

With three home matches in the next four Gameweeks (NEW, NOR, liv, REA) Adkins’ side could well be starting to find their stride at just the right time in their attempt to climb out the drop zone. As the stats suggest, there is plenty attacking potential on offer right now as Fantasy managers look to freshen up their five-man midfields and if Southampton continue along the same vein, there may be plenty reason for St Mary’s optimism just on the horizon.

Good article, and a very good point.

I think the main issue regarding this site getting a higher profile is this bandwagon and knee-jerking mentality - the opinion of a few on here now spreads a lot quicker causing price rise/falls much quicker and more frequently.

I'd love to know the web stats for this website over the last three years and see what the increase has been.

        Thanks.

Yeah, I wonder what effect this site has had in homogenising transfers and creating larger consensuses that have ever been possible in FPL.

The problem is that it's easy to get sucked in when everyone is doing it due to inevitable price rises (especially early on when you're trying to build team value) and the fear of missing out, even if you've had a chance to check the information for yourself and disagree with the consensus. I fell for it with Hazard and Michu this year. They're not bad players to own, but they certainly weren't the most important. Turns out I'm comfortable owning Michu now and Hazard isn't a bad bet but there's better value elsewhere it would seem.

Yep, good read. You touch on very interesting aspects. One comment though, isnt consensus teams suboptimal by definition?
I also have a feeling that it is actually quite few people who dictates the consensus around here.

It depends on the consensus and how it was formed. If it's early on in a GW and people haven't had a chance to gather all of the available information, evaluate it and make an informed decision, I suppose there's more of a chance that the consensus is grounded on very little information and is more likely to be incorrect.

On the other hand, clearly not all consensuses are founded in this way and websites like this remain a good way to gather, discuss and evaluate information.

I think we can often spot which consensuses are formed 'well' and which are based on little information. What do you think? Or is that not what you meant?

Oh, I probably wasnt so clear in my post. What I meant was that group decisions are not optimal for the top percentile, you have to precede it. But for average players I believe it is a positive thing.
I also believe that consensus here on ffs is dictated by a few knowledgeable authoritarians and then passed on by others and the arguments fades to a point where it is actually not so easy to see if its a well formed consensus or not.
There really should be a reference system on here 🙂

That's certainly an issue, one which I want to address in a future piece.

A reference/rating system would be great. More points for contributions that add to the discussion. That way you'd be able to see who's just repeating what they've heard and who's adding new information.

      Good article old son.

Group think, or "social proof" are age old facets of human nature. I guess it's largely just another form of laziness, mixed in with a bit of wanting to fit in.

Speaking personally, last week I captained RVP even though my gut was telling me to captain Suarez. We all know how that turned out!

Yeah, one of the things about the issue that makes it especially problematic is that it continues to influence you, even if you're fully aware that the consensus reached may not be the best one. The fact that people often give weight to earlier information when making a complex decision means that even if you reach a new decision on Saturday morning, you doubt whether you're right compared to all those people who said something else during the week.

The consequence is that now matter how informed you are, it's extremely difficult to think clearly and rationally.

I'm going to go against group consensus and suggest that you've kind of missed a big point. People make similar decisions in fpl not because of herd mentality but because there are logical reasons to make those decisions ( good stats or fixtures). Obviously, at the end of the day the game is only 22 men kicking a pig skin around so this logic does not always work out. I'm not sure it is herd mentality a lot of the time and to suggest it is implies you're above this kind of behaviour. An arrogant point of view in my opinion.

I certainly didn't intent to come off as arrogant. I don't consider myself to be above it. It's basically just a shortfall in human reasoning and decision making ability.

I invite you to re-read my final paragraph. I made the point that this isn't applicable to all consensuses.

I agree that logic doesn't always work out, but aiming to make the best possible decision based on careful consideration of all the available information is undoubtedly the best way to approach any kind of decision making, especially FPL. Whether that's a realistic option in all cases is another argument.

with the increased prominence of very viable sub 5.0m defenders, i don't think the argument that "Baines is essential" is so valid any more.

yes, he's on set pieces but is that enough to justify the 3m extra over a STK or SUN defender who might actually return a CS once in a while?

will he be one of the top scoring defenders at the end of the season? yes, he will.

but if you sell him for a 4.5m defender AND upgrade your midfield or forward line, the returns could be even more profitable.

in short, he's in my team for NOR then he's out.

Nastasic looked to have already stolen Lescotts place... Kompany being injured actually makes me less inclined to want Nastasic - unless it's long term, cause it gives Lescott a better chance to earn his place back for when Kompany returns...

You're right. Mancini said something like this after the match "We're crazy if we want to win the champions league in the second year"

It's not about winning the UCL, it's about going through the next stage. City were the only team who didn't beat Ajax, the easiest team in the group. Besides City have great players, everything was mancini's fault imo.

There are no easy games in the CL unfortunately. The problem isn't the opponents, it was more the way they played IMO. Keeping the scoring low in the first half and scoring a lot of second half goals worked in the PL last season but in the CL, you need to be establishing superiority earlier I think.

I think sacking Mancini purely based on the CL failure would be foolish. If the owners aren't happy at the end of the season, sack him then. He still has a lot to play for.

How in the mood to give some advice?

    Jussi - Bego

    Rafael - Cuellar - Ridgewell - McCartney - Nelsen

    Silva - Cazorla - Hazad - Bale - Sterling

    Tevez - Silva - Berbatov

    1.0 in bank

I was thinking to swap Berbatov for Podolski after this week. Arsenal has great fixtures and Podolsi (although he plays out of his position) could bring in some points and Berbatov is just lazy. 😀

I'm currently running with Begovic and Jaask as my rotating GK's but now that West Ham's fixtures have taken a severe turn for the worse, I'm considering a punt on De Gea (5.6m) after this week.

His place appears all but nailed on now and as I can't afford Rafael, it will give me cover for United's excellent run of fixtures. If he does get rotated then I have Begovic as back up.

I appreciate it is a bit of a gamble but around this time of year United tend to get tighter at the back and with Smalling and Jones back on the radar, the defense will be stronger.

Their return could also mean that Rafael is rotated a lot more and he did look very tired on Tues evening.

    What do you think?

It could work out well if they start keeping cleanies, but regardless of the fixtures I'm not sure yet. I'd rather keep my transfer and be a week late, especially since he isn't nailed on. Nailed on suggests there's no chance of him being rested/rotated. We all know that's not the case.

I would say with Begovic between the sticks, you don't need to invest more money in your GKs and making a move to 'cover' United's doesn't seem like the best policy to me.

Who knows. It would appear that the place in the team is his to loose but they have quality in depth and Fergie won't be afraid to use it.

I've not brought him in on the assumption that he's a rotation risk and because my defensive tactic involves one big hitter to play every week and the rest are cheap rotating defenders. If United start to shut teams out consistently then I might have to rethink.

Agreed Rafael is playing well but Ferguson likes to tinker with the team and bearing in mind Rafael's injury history,I think Smalling, Jones and even Valencia will come in from time to time.

Just looked at your team ,
So your first option is Berba > Fletcher
          Or Britton > Larson
When you look at it that way and considering Sunderlands ( Wba , Qpr , nor away , Che , Reading , man utd ) I'd see nothing wrong with either - in fact is there a case for both ?

Yeah, good point. I could have Larsson instead of Britton over the next few weeks to cover for Michu/Suarez yellows, and still go for Fletch if his form (or a dip in Berb's) makes that move work. The real cost of the Larsson move is that I am committed to keeping Michu and Fellaini for a while as I would not have the funds to upgrade. There are worse fates than that, though, if I have Larsson as a sub? Hmm.

              + 1 , you know you'll end up with bench headaches - but it's a nice pain.
And as you say it ties up all your funds - Britton (2pointer) doesn't give these problems so it is a punt - a calculated one though.
Looking at the foreseeable fixtures IMO there won't be much between Berb/fletch
That for me (I have Berb) is a more difficult call.
Saying that your rank is v good so you've made a lot of correct calls this year so far , so I think you need to trust yourself here ....

    anybody use Chris Glovers predictions?

    http://premierleaguefantasy.blogspot.ca/p/forecast-goals-per-game.html

how accurate are they? he has sunderland to be the worst defensive team over the next 8, i was considering doubling up with mig and cuellar for the next 4

he has arsenal to be top defensively which would make sense for me to get sczezney in instead of mignolet?

any ideas how accurate it/he usually is?

yeh i agree with his aguero forecast but rooney and berba over rvp seems odd (and i own rooney)

I love it, there is only one problem with his analysis. They look at the season so far and it is a very small sample size and in no way is he looking at which teams have been played against which would affect this result a lot. Id suggest you read his post before the last one and it looks that Sundernald still should do well at home

I haven't looked closely at it but I've seen it (the model) be wildly inaccurate in some cases but generally not bad.

It is odd that Sunderland come out so poorly. I suppose they must concede a lot of shots in the box. Whether they've been lucky to have gotten away with that so far, or if it's down to the excellence of Mingolet or some other factor is an open question.

Already doubled in mig and cuellar. great fixtures and a dg added to the fact they are super cheap makes it a no brainer. imo arsenal have got away with it quite a bit so far this season and are not a great option defensively. sagna is still worth investment though due to his attacking potential and cheap price.

I find it too restrictive because its only based on historic data. It doesn't take due consideration to changes in team formation, new managers or changes of player positions. A pure stats approach is too cagey. I think Glover himself says its really only a guide to help with decision making. I'd say it would be a mistake to use it religiously.

Yes but it we should use it in conjunction with what is actually happening in the now. For example HBA plays much better in a 433 than a 442. A recent change in formation by Pardew should mean returns for him. This is something that can't be picked up by 'general' stats. Rather you need specific stats on how he performs in each formation. FFS is very good at teasing out these sorts of details in their members articles.

For cases like this you can look at the stats for HBA from last season in the 4-3-3. There is always something to look at, to know what to expect.

Yes but Glover doesn't look at those stats. Thats just one example. My main arguement is that the stats he uses are quite general and miss some specifics. Even take into consideration injuries. i.e if Kompany is injured you may assume that Citeh's defense won't be as good.

No site can make a good team for you, you need to think for yourself. For example look at the watch list. Top of the watch list very rarely produce the best stats. I mean Walcott was not even on the watch list for past 2 weeks. While I considered him the best mid around.

Hahahaha!! United will be looking for redemption this weekend. Hopefully it's a big scoring game for United. I'm sure Rooney will have a big contribution in that.

yeah...his team was almost identical to mine once he did that move which makes our family mini league a bit naff...so i've done Nolan>Silva and now doing RVP>Rooney just to shake it up...

Can I get a word on Demel? Want to upgrade him to Cuellar but also want to downgrade Ivanovic to Cuellar. Will Demel come back into the starting team at West Ham and play as much as he did before injury..
