Twelve Gameweeks into the season and it’s something of an understatement to suggest Southampton have been far from impressive since their top-flight return. Nigel Adkins’ side have leaked goals in alarming numbers and sit second bottom of the table, with just nine points to their name thus far, but the past couple of matches have suggested they are finally starting to gel as a side:

Prior to last week’s home clash with Swansea, the Saints had conceded less than two goals on one occasion this term but have now managed that feat in back-to-back Gameweeks. Granted, a draw and a win in their last two is a little early for optimism but it is, nevertheless, the longest they have gone unbeaten in the league so far.

Cork v Davis

The upturn in performance has coincided with the return from injury of Jack Cork alongside Morgan Schneiderlin in the centre of midfield earlier this month. Sidelined with knee and ankle problems, the former Chelsea man had previously failed to feature in the top-flight this term, with his absence affording Steven Davis the chance to stake a claim as a regular.

After Saturday’s win at QPR, Adkins was unsparing in his praise of the midfielder’s performance as he watched his side battle their way to victory in the crucial bottom-of-the-table encounter with QPR:

“He (Cork) was yet again outstanding – him and Morgan Schneiderlin together. I played Jack Cork in every game after I signed him last season. He was called up for the Great Britain team for the Olympics which is a great honour obviously but we didn’t have him for pre-season. He came back and in his first game he got injured, he came back after that and got injured straightaway in his comeback game. We’ve not had an opportunity to have Jack Cork and Morgan Schneiderlin together until now. They are two young 23-year-olds who I believe have got so much potential and we can get a good partnership going with them.”

Comparing the vital statistics of Cork and Davis in the centre of midfield, the former’s influence in front of the back-four is already obvious. In terms of involvement and distribution, he has averaged almost 20 touches per game more than Davis (80 to 60.6) and while the pair are virtually identical for passes received, Cork has been far more efficient in quickly moving the ball on, making 57 passes to Davis’ 46.3, with 48 to 39.8 successful passes per game.

TchsPasses RcvdPassesSucc PassesAerial DuelsTacklesIntRecoverClear

Steven Davis60.639.246.339.844.4%63.6%1.55.71.0

When it comes to defensive work, Cork has won 71.4% of aerial duels, far superior to Davis’ 44.4%, and has also bettered his successful tackle ratio, by 75% to 63.6%. He has made more interceptions (2 to 1.5), recoveries (9 to 5.7) and clearances (1.5 to 1.0) per game, highlighting his worth to the side. Clearly, Cork’s deep-lying role is not going to bring home the Fantasy points but it’s the extra combative edge he gives the midfield over Davis, in addition to his understanding with Schneiderlin, that has resultantly boosted the potential of the Saints’ attacking assets.

Southampton v QPR
Southampton v WBA

With the pair sitting in front of the back-four, Southampton’s 4-2-3-1 shape is clear in Saturday’s match (left). Cork (18) and Schneiderlin (4) are content to stay deep, with Jason Puncheon (42) and Adam Lallana (20) pushing high up on the right and left respectively in support of Rickie Lambert (7).

Their previous away game (right) at West Brom looks far less defined. Adkins rolled out a 4-4-2, with Davis (8) more advanced than Schneiderlin (4) in the middle and while Jay Rodriguez (9) was fielded on the right wing, his tendency to drop deep and into central areas offsets the side’s balance.

Puncheon Comparison

The winger’s goal and assist at QPR, supplemented by a couple of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points, has already seen his priced rise from 4.4 to 4.5 this week, with plenty prepared to jump aboard the cut-price bandwagon. Granted, Mark Hughes’ side are bottom of the table for a reason and while we’re reining in our expectations, the average position maps over the last two games, compared to his previous appearances, shows just how far forward Jason Puncheon has been in possession.

Puncheon GW1-10
Puncheon GW11-12

The statistics more than back up his displays over the last two. Although Puncheon’s average game time between Gameweeks 1-10 and 11-12 was lower (73.1 minutes per appearances to 95), the figures take a significant jump. Over his last two matches, Puncheon has averaged 40.5 touches in the final third, virtually double his previous 20.7. For Passes received in this crucial area, he is again just shy of registering twice the tally (23.5 to 12), while the same applies to successful passes made in the final third, with 18 to 9.7 highlighting his upturn in distribution closer to goal.

Puncheon GW 1-1073.120.7129.731.9139.40.92.6

His more advanced position has helped him to five touches in the box per game – he had previously averaged three, while his attempts on goal have almost trebled, up from 1.9 to 5.5. Crucially, it’s not all speculative long-range efforts, either; 2.5 attempts have been in the box, up from a previous season average of one. This equates to 17.3 minutes per shot, superior to the Gameweek 1-10 figure of 39.4. Intriguingly, the number of chances created has almost halved, down from 0.9 to 0.5 –now that he is seeing more of the ball closer to goal, Puncheon is looking to find the net rather than tee up a team mate. An upturn in attempted dribbles, from 2.6 to four, highlights a player with flourishing self-belief right now.

Again, it’s no surprise to see the winger’s display was talked up by his manager post-match:

“He’s been working hard. He’s had a good pre-season and again it’s about that consistency…he’s scored a great goal and could have scored three or four more. He worked hard for the team as did everybody – it was a real good all round performance, but there’ll talk about Puncheon and maybe one or two others.”

A Look at Lallana

Finally, we take a glance at the displays of Adam Lallana over the past couple of games and compare them to a select batch of premium Fantasy midfielders. While Puncheon’s weekend returns have picked up plenty new investors, Lallana has failed to produce a goal or assist in his last four but his statistics have been superb – although they haven’t been translated to Fantasy points, his owners will be more than happy to hold.

Hazard10453527113
Silva957153793
Cazorla735045371
Valencia936353341

Between Gameweeks 11-12, only one midfielder, Eden Hazard, had more touches (104) in the final third than the Saints man, who managed to equal David Silva’s 95. While the City playmaker leads the way for passes received in the final third, with 71, Lallana’s total of 58 is bettered only by one other midfielder, United’s Antonio Valencia, with 63. For successful passes made in the final third, once again Lallana features in the top five; only the aforementioned trio of Valencia (53), Silva (53) and Hazard (52) have marginally made more.

In terms of chances created, Silva and Hazard, with seven apiece, have bettered Lallana’s five, though this is still superior to Santi Cazorla and Valencia, who both managed to provide three goalscoring opportunities for team mates. When it comes to touches in the box, though, Lallana excels – his total of 18 over the last two Gameweeks is joint-top with Hatem Ben Arfa and leaves the likes of Hazard (11) and Silva (nine) trailing in his wake. Interestingly, Gaston Ramirez also impresses here – his 13 is bettered only by Lallana and Ben Arfa.

For total shots over the last couple, Puncheon’s 11 tops the charts, though Lallana and Ramirez sit joint fifth, with five apiece; further illustration of the plentiful potential from Adkins’ attacking midfield trio. Lallana’s tally of three efforts from inside the box again fare well when compared to our other featured players, equalling both Hazard and Silva.

With three home matches in the next four Gameweeks (NEW, NOR, liv, REA) Adkins’ side could well be starting to find their stride at just the right time in their attempt to climb out the drop zone. As the stats suggest, there is plenty attacking potential on offer right now as Fantasy managers look to freshen up their five-man midfields and if Southampton continue along the same vein, there may be plenty reason for St Mary’s optimism just on the horizon.

Why? The odds are that long for a reason, it's not going to happen.

The thing with Arsenal is, they only have one way of playing and it isn't good enough to win them the Champions League. The only trophy they'll get close to winning this season is the Capital One Cup.

Not hating at all, it's a relief as those that set up to do nothing but defend against the bigger teams in the UCL bore me rigid. It's a competition of champions, you should attack and try to beat a team by playing football as you have the quality to be in it in the first place, not sit everyone back behind the ball.

Only problem is, I can understand it as it's realistically the only chance teams like Arsenal have of winning the trophy. If they played football against Barcelona or Real Madrid, which they will more than likely have to do at some point in the competition, they will get destroyed.

Not hating by saying they won't win football's most presitigious competition, just as I think Stoke won't win the FA Cup this season.

It was basically Maicon's lapse in concentration that cost them the match tonight. I thought Yaya looked pretty off but Silva was immense. I also have been quietly impressed by Nasri at times.

Well (you may shoot me down on this one!) I'm planning to have Tevez AND Aguero for Wigan, away GW14 (it will be for one GW only) bfore I shift Tevez out for Suarez in 15.

Man City's best formation is clearly the 4-2-2-2 in my opinion. Silva and Nasri drifting inside from the wings, Tevez slightly behind Aguero. This is how they played at the very beginning and end of last season and was (shock horror) the periods in which their form was the best. I think now they're out of the champions league it's all about retaining the premier league, which is good news for Aguero owners, Tevez might still be rotated with Dzeko though, 2 bad performances doesn't take away the fact he deserves a chance.

Totally agreed, 4-2-2-2 with narrow midfielders. In practice if Tevez is behind Aguero it's more of a 4-2-3-1, but quite different from the Chelsea one where the central attacking midfielder (Oscar) is deeper.

I really can't understand why Mancini went for width repeatedly (wingers, 3-5-2) at the expense of midfield. They have played like England at times.

I do think Dzeko is finished though - demonstrating he's a supersub not a super starter.

I'm veering more to (b) as well. Puncheon is a good shout but feel that Sterling is more of a shoe in. Only problem with Sterling is that I'd be doubling up on Liverpool attacking threat, which I'd be less inclined to do.

OK I have made some terrible fpl decisions this month benching the wrong players who scored big points, captaining the wrong players, and transferring in a player early who then got red carded and suspended.

My next big decision is Ba or Giroud. Hopefully long term for fixtures until gw21.
I already have Cazorla and eh Colocinni.

Juve, PSG or Dortmund will win the Champions League, the team that can defend the best will win. Most teams in Europe seem to forget all about defending, tactics have gone to pot, the English domination in Europe is over, you only have to look at the leauge, teams are nowhere near as good as they used to be. Much more even even and the likes of West Brom are fancying their chances.

As for UCL FF, I am absolute flying, 86 points this week. Following a great week last week, If only I was so lucky in FPL and SFF, everyone seems to score in my CL team. 304 points overall.

I don't think any of those teams will win it. It'll be out of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester United.

I'm all for the defensive side of the game, but a team ain't scoring without the ball. We've seen in the past few seasons that Barcelona are a very, very difficult side to beat and, whilst they're maybe not as good as they were under Guardiola, they ain't far off. They will take some stopping.

I'd obviously prefer to own Silva to Nolan but I'm the same at the moment. With Nolan and dreaming of the flair replacement. But knowing he will probably hurt me and at such a bargain price it seems wrong to dismiss him because of fixtures alone.

Walcott for me has been injured two or three times already and has Oxlade/Gervinho to contend with. I bet you we see him being subbed off in matches when they aforementioned are both fit. Even perhaps dropped like you say.

The thing Walcott has over Silva is the possibility of goals and lots of them. But the part that makes me skeptical is how much better is Walcott in relative terms to Podolski/Giroud/Cazorla. Will he be vastly overscoring all of these other guys? At the moment it looks like Arsenal are sharing goals around a lot.

The regression theory is a little overrated when you consider Nolan has always done this. Always scored goals when playing that position. It was obvious he was going to do it again. Fellaini is more puzzling because he's never been on for a 15 goal season before but suddenly he is...because he plays second striker basically. And he is a hell of a lot more skilled as a player than Nolan.

He's playing Manchester City, they said.
He won't keep a clean sheet, they said.

Keep Jaaskelainen until the end of the season in my opinion.

Na I have nothing in the bank. Hmmm i might have to tinker a little bit more. Ridgewell is doing ok and Cuellar has a double week coming up. I haven't much to play around with at the back. Hang on I could go hazard to mata and then get mert in for ridgewell. What you think?

      Begovic - Excellent
      Jaaskelainen - Good
Ridgewell - Good, if not little expensive
      Cuellar - Excellent
Gorkks - Good, but Shorey better alternative? Perhaps rotation prone
Clyne - Good cheapie, nothing more
O'Brien - Rotation prone, good short term but poor fixtures, would swap
Nolan - Good but poor fixtures, are you a West Ham fan per chance? Haha
      Sterling - Excellent
      Silva - Excellent
Hazard - Wait to see how Benitez fits in, could be promising
Tevez - Good but may be prone to rotation when Balotelli gets back
RVP - Essential in my opinion
      Suarez - Excellent
      Fellaini - Excellent

There are as long as you haven't made any changes yourself whatsoever.

Mine haven't gone through yet so I presume they just haven't been done yet.

But he deserves abuse for that stupid brochure he brought out when he was flogging himself looking for a new club couple of years ago

Alternative take on city rotation after CL - what happens when you have the same number of players but considerably fewer fixtures? You rotate them more, of course? 😆

With Silva rising tonight gotta make a decision.

Looking at Baines and Pienaar out for free. Two main plans I could go for:

Cuellar and Silva/Walcott this week and Demel to Turner next week.

    OR

Enrique and AJ this week and Demel to Cuellar next week.

So its essentially Silva/Walcott (already have Caz and Aguero) and Turner or Enrique and AJ

    Federici/Jussi
    Simpson/Baird/Boyce/Ivan/McCart
    Pienaar/Fella/Routledge/Michu/Mata
    RVP/Berba/Jelavic

I'm tempted to WC but not this week with poss good return for Everton.
Want to get rid of a whole bunch of them, but for this week am thinking a -4 hit to do

    Ivan/Routlegde for Silva/JE or Cuellar....

Anyone got any better ideas for me?

I wouldn't wildcard, there's a couple of players who I would switch out though.

Two of your Everton clientale should go, Jelavic would be first out - to Ba or Giroud. Then I'd look to get rid of Pienaar too.

Others I'm not sure about are Routledge, given that you have Michu, I'd switch him out for Sterling to give you that Liverpool cover and a budget option.

Then in defence, Ivanovic to Enrique like you say and Boyce to Cuellar.

forgot to say I have 3m in the bank so can drop routledge and ivan this week and get in Silva and JE or anyone cheaper...

I agree with the ones you said - maybe also Simpson out as well.

Jelavic has to get one more spin out this week - my MF is more of a concern this week as Fella out and Routledge not starting.

Saying that, Rout for Sterling would mean I could do Jela for Aguero or other expensive fwd....

I'm a Simpson owner and I'm looking around to see where the clean sheets are going to come from. I think once Coloccini is back, if Simpson can retain his place he'll be a better bet. I'm willing to give him a couple of weeks because I'm sure Newcastle's defence will get back to the way it was last season.

Well he did me proud last season.... I want him out though but not for a hit and he doesnt tie up cash like ivan....

I am thinking Sterling for Rout might not be such a bad idea now - save the hit on Ivan and keep the 3mill for an upgrade on Jela next GW.

I might ask a new question based on that...

      No and no.

Hazard to Mata is a sideways move, they'll both score as much as each other pretty much.
Why would you switch Ridgewell out? Is he injured or something? If he's playing, keep him.

I'm on my wildcard at the moment and was happy with the rest of the team. It's just I have ridgewell playing Cuellar this weekend and if I move hazard to mata I free up .2 and get merts in for ridgewell. So what you think now? Still don't do it?

If you're on your wildcard, then owning Mata is okay, for the reason I stated above.

However, I would question Mertesacker as an option. Arsenal won't keep many clean sheets I don't think, they're still shaky in that area.
