Tuesday’s matches lived up to expectations, as four sides low on confidence and fraught with stuttering form served up a single goal and limited returns. Here’s the Stock Check on this evening’s events…

On the Up

Christian Benteke
Thrown into the Scout Picks, the formidable Belgian striker delivered a third goal of the season to provide a vital winner for Villa. With Darren Bent kept in the stands, Benteke justified Paul Lambert’s faith in him with another muscular display. Maximum bonus beckons and it’s QPR and Stoke over the next two.

The Villa Defence
While Paul Lambert’s back four have conceded eight goals in their last five, all eight of those conceded came against United and City, meaning that the Villa back four have kept three clean sheets around those two matches. Three away games in the next four is an obstacle to investment, although their progress is clearly worth monitoring. Scout Pick Ciaran Clark has the goal threat to accompany defensive returns but he joined the suspension tightrope with his fourth booking tonight.

Adel Taarabt
There were question marks over the Moroccan’s role when Harry Redknapp took the reins but tonight’s showing indicated that Taarabt will remain a key figure and certainly QPR’s biggest threat and creative influence. While he drew a blank this evening, Fantasy managers will be monitoring his potential as QPR’s schedule improves.

Going Down

Sunderland’s Attack
With six goals in their last three matches, both Stephane Sessegnon and Steven Fletcher have attracted inevitable interest with a double Gameweek looming. However, tonight provided more evidence that we must remain cautious on their potential. Martin O’Neill’s side laboured again, with the bulk of their efforts on goal fired in from range.

Kaspar Gorkss
The Latvian was presumably rested, with Adrian Mariappa drafted into the centre of the Reading back four. Brian McDermott’s decision to omit the senior member of his defence could be significant given that Sean Morrison retained his start. With Chris Gunter also rotated out, the security of starts in the Reading rearguard is again in question.

Julio Cesar
The Brazilian reportedly picked up a groin injury in the first half and was denied clean sheet returns with Robert Green taking over for the second period. He’ll presumably be an early doubt for the meeting with Villa this weekend.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

1.Have berba and Santon. Thinking of moving to Giroud plus 4.3 def. Yes or No?

    2. If yes who for the 4.3? Have Bego/ Tremmel. Rafael, Cellular, Gorkss, Hughes plus?

I have just sold Berbatov, but after Chelsea he has 2 home games that look promising.

You should link your team so people can give you better advice, i.e. they can see what other players you have, etc.

Yeah.....it goes to show you how important the captains pick is. Who would have predicted he would draw blanks vs nor/QPR? Hindsight is 20/20, would have done it again.

Everyone is ragging on us about having SUN cover for DGW. Truth is, if we score 11-16 in that extra game, it is worth 7K positions if your rank is 20,000.

Makes total sense. Fulham's fixtures do look tasty. I went for Fletch for 3 GWs and I just hope Berbatov's price doesn't get out of control.

Berbatov also played too far back last games. He suffers when Ruiz is out. My guess is he will play further back tomorrow, which doesn't mean he won't produce.

I was thinking just now, there's been a few examples of teams tightening up defensively after heavy defeats. We often write off teams defensively after getting smashed by big teams but if you look at a few examples it's often off the back of a heavy defeat teams start to correct their errors and become more cagey in their approach.

Example 1: Norwich lost 5-2 and 4-1 to Liverpool and Chelsea respectively. Since then they have gone on to keep 4 Clean Sheets.

Example 2: Aston Villa got smashed 5-0 by City but have now gone 2 games without conceding against Arsenal and Reading.

Example 3: Last year after Man Utd lost 6-1 to City they went on a run of 1-0 wins that were a direct reaction to those embarrassing defensive lapses.

Moral of the story: Sometimes a big defeat can act as a wake up call and trigger a major improvement/reassessment of tactics for teams.

Next time you see a team get a drubbing...don't be too quick to write them off 🙂

Are you thinking of (c) Fletcher for the DGW? He is basically guaranteed 8 points, which is a goal more than a blank (c) would get you. With one goal, he would be at 16-20. It is tempting. Especially, since one of the games is RDG.

    Thoughts?

Totally agree AL.....imho....it is where the season is won or lost.

Look at last season with the massive DGW/Blank week in GW 34-36. Those who navigated through it were sucessful.

Also look at the double during the first GW of this season, those who loaded up on CHE profited. You will be hard pressed to find anyone in the TOP 5000 what did not take advantage of the DGW in GW1.

Taking risks for DGW's are essential imo.

If i recall those who invested in the TOT DGW last season were also sucessful. I cannot think of too many DGW's that did not pay off.

It is not like we are selling an RVP/Suarez/Baines/Bale/Aguero/Tevez or other "season keepers" to invest in DGW.....it is a calculated risk imo

I have 4 in the dgw, 3 of them defenders. I've generally done brilliantly off dgw's in past seasons and got some huge green arrows but there is a big difference between great attacking teams against 2 weaker defences and the least creative team in the league having an extra game against one of the best teams in the league. Hard to imagine the chelsea game adding anything more than 2 points to sunderland players returns, with a very reall possibility of defenders shipping a few and going minus

Funny stat + I do usually love my big defenders but last season and this one so far is proving to be the cheapies at the back with maybe one big hitter but so far the cheapies are doing their jobs

I had my WC for the late doubler last season and made up +80 points on a league leader everything was perfect and it was an epic comeback

I started messing with my team a few weeks ago and got nothing but arrows sitting pretty for the next few now

My focus over the next couple of weeks has to be my defensive line. Have already downgraded Baines and before I go super uber I'm wondering as to the wisdom of it. There are always teams(with low budget options) that show promise but hitting on the right player is a matter of closely reading defenses like Sunderland, Norwich, Villa, Qpr, Liverpool and above that teams like WBA, Stoke. Feel that I'm a bit behind the curve on which teams are the best for cheapies and mid price players.

What's the best approach and which teams are you moving towards?

A bit like what I was getting at above about defences. I think psychological circumstances can play a part. Teams can become tighter as the season progresses because there feels like there is suddenly more urgency for results and fears over past errors. The start of season can be a bit of a free-for-all until things settle back into their natural mode.

keepers hardly get bonus cos they rank saves low in score. strikers might still get based on SOT with fletcher having 2. cisse has 1 but 7 off so he is out. taarbt has none and 2 crosses. bonus points probably split among the defenders. i would say cuellar and the other qpr defenders. i do think (and hope) fletch has a shout for one point though haha

I tried to look at the BAPs for the last few 0-0 games, but it's all over the place. One thing is for sure - strikers won't get any BAPS. It will be between Mignolet, the defenders, and a few of the ball-winning midfielders, I reckon. Maybe Taarabt.

Trying to decide which one to ditch this week for Walcott, out of Fellaini and Michu. My 5th mid that I'd potentially rotate whoever I keep with is Taarabt - all 3 of their fixtures up to the Jan W/C are below:

Fellaini: mcy, TOT, sto, whu, WIG, CHE, new
Michu: ars, NOR, tot, MUN, rea, ful, AVL
Taarabt: AVL, wig, FUL, new, WBA, LIV, che

Rotation wise, it seems Michu rotates better, but then he's on 4 yellows and playing in a less attacking team.

It's a tricky one, but which one would you ditch?

Hey Jin. I'd say wait and see how Theo gets through the Everton game. I personally have both Fellaini and Michu and I wouldn't want to lose either one of them. Regardless of fixtures, they are their respective team's most dangerous player.

Yeah, I'm not overly keen on losing either, but their fixtures are just pants, whereas Walcott's are superb, and imo he's just as explosive.

I'd potentially bring them back in the Jan wildcard, so it's a 7 week punt that I'm prepared to potentially lose 0.3m - 0.4m on transfer value for.

Hmm, kinda. Although I think I'd start Taarabt in 2 weeks though (GW15 and GW17), so it probably comes down to which scores more?

Michu (NOR, MUN, rea, ful, AVL), or
Fellaini (TOT, whu, WIG, CHE, new)

The only two strikers who have gotten BAPS in 0-0 games all season: Zamora, Vaz Te (more of a winger). There is some hope for Fletch 😀

Awful time for Rob Green to show some GK skills; Fletcher's bullet header was quality.

    Pepin, just curious:

What is a Bulgarian, who takes work trips to Honduras, doing in NYC? What do you do mate? Are you a contract killer or something? 🙂

I read some facts on NYC just yesterday that there are enough restaurants in NYC for a person to eat out every night for 54 years and never visit the same restaurant.

That means that there are at least 19723.5 restaurants in NYC...

I'm starting to feel regret over benching Ba. He might just pull something off against STO. I do fancy Berbatov to do well at Bridge.

No intentions on selling Ba at this point. In fact, I'd keep him for the next one against WIG. It's just that I predicted a quiet game for NEW against a solid STO, but for Puncheon, he may contribute a thing or two against NOR at home.

I took in some factors into account to decide which is the best. It was either Puncheon or Ba. Puncheon has the form and fixture to do well even against a solid defensive NOR at home, whereas Ba won't get as much support as he needs with Arfa and Cabaye missing, and also... against an ultra-defensive STO.

        The logic is sound. 😀

Hmmm...I see your reasoning but he's still getting lots of chances and bearing in mind the baps, fwds are usually the biggest points scorers.

    Best option from the below?

    a) Baines & Michu/Fellaini -> Enrique & Walcott (delays Ba -> Suarez until GW17)
    b) Baines & Michu/Fellaini -> Wisdom & Walcott (delays Ba -> Suarez until GW16)
    c) Baines & Ba -> Enrique & Suarez (no Arsenal cover)
    d) Baines, Michu/Fellaini & Ba -> Wisdom, Walcott & Suarez [4 point hit]
    e) Fellaini, Michu & Ba -> Puncheon, Walcott & Suarez [4 point hit]

    Jaask, Federici
    Baines, Cuellar, Hughes, Clyne, McCartney
    Bale, Silva, Fellaini, Michu, Taarabt
    RVP, Ba, Fletcher
