A night that saw some familiar names come to the fore, as Michu and Marouane Fellaini restored order for the template midfield, while Gareth Bale maintained his hot streak. Rafa’s Chelsea continue to struggle for a cutting edge, while Robin Van Persie found his to stop the rot after consecutive blanks. Here’s the Stock Check on Wednesday’s matches…

On the Up

Gareth Bale
The Welshman scored for the third consecutive league game, whilst providing the assist for Aaron Lennon’s strike. Despite notching an unfortunate own goal, with bonus points likely, Bale could be heading for his fourth double figure return of the season. All of a sudden, he’s living up to his price tag and discovering the form that made him devastating at times like season. With strong fixtures over Christmas, the prospects look good.

Michu
An eighth goal of the season for the Spaniard who is showing little sign of letting up as a supreme Fantasy asset. While fixtures stiffen for the Swans, Michu’s threat, either up front or behind the striker, looks unshakable.

Wayne Routledge & Pablo Hernandez
While Michu is clearly the weapon of choice amongst Swansea’s assets, this pairing continue to impress to offer alternatives. Hernandez notched his second and third assists of the season, while Routledge, seemingly back in favour having started the last two, notched a brace to take him to four goals for the season.

Marouane Fellaini
Like Michu, the big Belgian is showing no sign of slowing down his scoring. His first-half goal was his seventh of the season – Felliani has now scored or assisted in his last five league outings.

Theo Walcott
A first minute goal announced Walcott’s return to the Gunners lineup and offered indication that he could be the key target with Arsene Wenger’s ranks to cover their forthcoming favourable fixtures. While Santi Cazorla remains an integral link man in the Arsenal midfield, Walcott has the goal threat that could well outscore the Spaniard over a spell that finds the Gunners face four home matches in six Gameweeks.

Robin Van Persie
Back on the scoresheet after just 30 seconds, the Dutchamn justified the Fantasy armband and offered some reassurance to those feeling fidgety after two consecutive blanks. With Rooney faltering and Antoinio Valencia injured and out of form, Van Persie remains the only real viable cover of United’s attacking potential, unless a gamble on Javier Hernandez is considered.

Rickie Lambert
For so long we’ve regarded the Saints’ striker as the most fancied budget forward and tonight he notched his sixth goal of the season to help his cause. The Saints were stalled by Norwich and with a blank in Gameweek 17, Lambert’s owners may well be making exit plans despite tonight’s strike.

The City Defence
A fifth clean sheet in six league outings. Roberto Mancini’s side struggled to dominate the first half but swept the Latics aside in an impressive second half showing. The back four was shuffled by Mancini but Vincent Kompany and, in particular, Matija Nastasić, impressed again. The young Serb looks unshakable right now and, at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game, is offering a cut-down route to City’s current superb run of defensive form.

Cesar Azpilicueta
The Spaniard made his fifth consecutive league start tonight, keeping Gary Cahill on the bench. With David Luiz picking up his fifth booking, he looks set to maintain his run of starts in a side that looks to be set up to earn clean sheets as a priority. Fixtures and the Gameweek 17 blank is an obstacle to investment, however.

Going Down

Carlos Tevez
An unused sub at the DW Stadium tonight, his star has plummeted, having been the top scorer in Gameweek 13. With Mario Balotelli scoring and Edin Dzeko also in the queue for starts, Tevez’s owners will surely be planning an exit with a plethora of more secure options available elsewhere. Sergio Aguero’s owners will not be much happier – the Argentine blanked and was subbed on 68 minutes.

Wayne Rooney
For a few weeks, Rooney was looking set to provide cover of United’s attacking potential but tonight’s blank means that he’s now gone five league starts without a goal, notching two assists in that spell. Such returns fail to justify his price tag and again, he is failing behind Robin Van Persie in the scoring stakes.

Chelsea’s Attacking Assets
Rafa Benitez set the tone for the evening by benching Juan Mata from the start and, perhaps unsurprisingly, saw his side struggle to break down a determined Fulham. Chelsea have kept consecutive clean sheets under Benitez but with no goals scored, owners of Hazard and Mata will be hugely concerned. With a blank in Gameweek 17 looming, big sales of both look guaranteed in the next two Gameweeks.

Leighton Baines
The Everton defence have now gone nine matches without a clean sheet, while Baines has gone five without a goal or assist. More significantly, there are reports post-match that Baines suffered a hamstring injury in tonight’s game, making him an early doubt for the trip to City at the weekend. That could well be the final straw for his frustrated owners.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Happy enough with RVP tonight but I'm really starting wonder if the money would be best invested elsewhere over the season. I just don't see braces/hat tricks over the horizon and he really isn't always going to be the best captaincy option if he's a) not looking extremely threatening game after game and b) if he's not being explosive enough to justify it.

There is a safety in it but even tonight he got really lucky with that goal. And Hernandez and Rooney look equally dangerous.

One thing I would say though is Rooney has a hell of a lot of speculative efforts. Whatever about him getting more shots in...they're not always as clear cut as RVPs. Rooney was particularly keen on shooting from anywhere outside the box tonight. One of them nearly worked out but for a fine save by Jussi. But the problem is I think RVP gets completely marked out of games and gets stuck looking to be played through constantly but not always getting the service. I think Man Utd are so keen on the possession play that they refuse to go for crafty through balls and crosses for RVP because it squanders possession/control and makes them vulnerable to counter attacks.

A thing I do like is Anderson's place in the team. He adds pace and creativity to the attack that is sorely missing when they play Scholes/Carrick.

Yeah but there can be a flaw in that way of thinking. It leads you to blind faith and ignorance of other options. Yes, we all hope it works out in the long run if he fails a few times but you could really benefit from the odd differential captain by getting it right.

I'll be more inclined to shift captains since the others in my ML got rid. He seemed to be the best option since Bale and Defoe were playing Liverpool, so I went for it. Increased my lead by a good amount so I can afford to take risks now. Once I get Suarez and Silva in I'll have more options, and I'll be okay that.

You need Utd cover and he's your safest bet, albeit most expensive. He does provide a good captaincy option each week and will be in the running for top goalscorer of the year as a Utd forward always is. It goes down to you getting the right players with his money if you do sell him.

Plus he's not on pens and most free kicks. If you downgrade to aguero/Rooney and to a lesser extent Suarez(no set piece duties) then you could afford to upgrade a Nolan type player to an elite

It's a key decision, and one that merits further analysis and discussion...

Personally, I think the advantages of having him far outweigh the disadvantages...

Looking at it simply, you have to consider the alternatives to determine the feasibility of losing him... in his price bracket you have Rooney & Aguero - one often plays too deep and the other doesn't play often enough (although no CL should change that). I still believe RVP justifies the extra outlay over Rooney, basically because he has gained more points per pound than Rooney has...

The biggest problem is that Man Utd will always score a decent amount of goals... no one from the midfield can come close to gaining a similar percentage of points in relation to their price that RVP can... and yes time played is a factor, but at the end of the day it shouldn't matter cos you should only really consider those that are usually guaranteed 90mins...

I would suggest that most people should have RVP & Suarez, but those that don't could and probably should consider him a viable alternative if they don't already have him... he is a must have for me for the next 10 weeks at least...

If you are considering dropping down a level to Tevez, Giroud, Jelavic, Ba etc... I don't think that you will have it any easier... will the extra money you save really help you? The extra 4m might enable you to upgrade a mid priced to a big hitting midfielder, but that doesn't guarantee you extra points, since most of the mid priced mids are matching the big hitters if not out scoring...

If you are looking to place the extra money in defence, then that is another story, I can see the merits in doing so, if done wisely could allow you to have some interesting options that would otherwise be impossible... I'm talking about having the likes of Nastasic, Enrique, Mert/Gibbs along with the customary Cameron/Cuellar arrangement...

I think that defence would look amazing for the next 10 weeks, and would possibly outscore RVP + cheap defence versus No RVP + that defence...

Cheers Zep, great bit of analysis there. Totally agree with your train of thought here.

At the end of the day, Man Utd are going to score more goals arguably than any other side making at least one attacker an essential. But the tricky thing this year is that it isn't just one big striker they have (like Rooney last year) where you could be sure you had the top attacker in the team and rest easy.

This year we've already seen signs of RVP finding it hard to get into games or influence them in a way he would like to. Possible down to the lack of service and the struggles the team has had to adapt to different systems and methods of attacking. RVP can be very subdued when Man Utd get blocked off by a wall of 10 men and he's marked out of it like he's some assassin ready to pounce (which is RVP's style really)

The problem really is RVP is definitely the 'Rooney' of Man Utd this year. In fact he's a better Rooney probably/potentially. But when you plan to captain him every week I think we could be caught out more so than last year when he played for Arsenal. Basically because Man Utd simply don't rely on RVP enough. The fact that they can score so many goals is ironically a detriment to RVP...in that he doesn't actually NEED to be so lethal and can perform other duties to help the team win games.

        Cheers for your reply Zep!

I agree, RVP is just a bit boring and isn't doing anything special, anyone looking to chase leads in leagues should jump off the RVP bandwagon before the guys above them do. I'm doing Maloney & RVP -> Silva & Suarez this GW.

Stuck at bottom of last page...

Are these transfers worth an 8pt hit?

Baines, Hazard, Jelavic > Enrique, Walcott, Suarez.

    Hear me out…

Was already planning a (-4) for Cuellar and Suarez in for Baines and Jelly. Really want to ditch Hazard also, as he’s dropping in price, but is it worth the extra (-4)? Im thinking long term but (-8) never looks good on paper.

Almost had the perfect defence this week if I hadn’t benched Nelsen for Clyne.

    Bego
    Clyne Cuellar Raf Nelsen Gorkss
    Mata Santi Bale Fell Sterling
    Ba RVP Fletcher

Just brought Mata last GW only to have him benched so may as well keep for this weekend when he will start. Thinking of dropping him for Michu after that with Enrique coming in for either Neslen, Gorkss or Clyne. Or I could scrap the whole thing and buy Hazard back now that he plays behind the sriker. Thoughts?

I had Theo for his previous two games, served me well, took him out when he got injured and gotten two blanks out of Santi...but now I can't waste another transfer to get him back in, bigger fish to fry 😀

Suarez at 10.4....is it too late? For us RvP owners, that's 24+ million in 2 players, especially when he is one yellow card away from a ban. I see a lot of people taking hits, reshuffling their teams to get him in. Even crippling their teams. I am just not convinced.

I was pointing you out personally. But I see a lot of people taking 4 and 8 point hits, selling players they shouldn't be selling...I just am not sure if at 10.4 it's worth it. Opening for discussion really.

I think sometimes people think too much into the price of the player, obviously it matters but as long as he's going to score points ( which he will ) its worth it, although i got
Him at 9.5. People are getting Aguero in for 11m and personally i think with our fixtures and less rotation threat he could outscore him, the yellow cards arent promising though

I'm reluctant to jump on the wagon just yet. 4 yellows/2 blanks/other strikers doing ok. Not sure if he's absolutely essential to my team just yet. Or at least enough for me to clamber around trying to fit him in with urgency.

Sort of know what you mean. He doesn't look like a natural when it comes to striking a ball or at least he seems to lack gracefulness. But that also benefits him as his shots/goals he's scored have been kind of unconventional and catch keepers off guard. This can really be a benefit because he's not doing the obvious thing and is hard to predict/read.
