In stark contrast to their summer transfer dealings, Liverpool were quick out the blocks yesterday as the Reds made their first significant move of the winter window by snapping up Daniel Sturridge on a long-term contract from Chelsea.

The Anfield club missed out on targets such as Gylfi Sigurdsson and Clint Dempsey prior to the start of the season and having allowed Andy Carroll a loan move to West Ham, Brendan Rodgers’ attacking options have been somewhat limited in the opening five months of the campaign. After announcing the deal, Liverpool’s managing director Ian Ayre admitted the club were keen to get their business for the winter up and running:

“It was always going to be an important one. As we’ve said all along, the most important thing was to continue to strengthen the team – and clearly up front. Daniel is somebody we’ve always had in our sights and somebody the manager has had huge interest in right from the start. It was important to us that we did all of the work ahead of the transfer window in talking to Chelsea and the player and his representatives. We made sure we did that so we could have him hit the ground running in January – and here we are today on the second and we’re all done and dusted, so we’ll look forward to seeing him in a Liverpool shirt and on the pitch.”

The Statistics

For a 23-year-old, Sturridge has led a somewhat nomadic existence. A youth career that began at Coventry and Villa led the forward to Man City but, in spite of his renowned self-assurance, he struggled to make any real impact at the Etihad, with 21 appearances harvesting five goals and three assists over three seasons.

Snapped up by Chelsea in the summer of 2009 as his contract ran down, Sturridge spent a total of four seasons at the Bridge but his only real impact came mainly under Andre Villas-Boas last term. Starring on the wing in the 2011/12 campaign, he produced 11 goals and five assists from 30 appearances, compared to a combined haul of two goals and a pair of assists in 33 first-team outings over the rest of his time in London.

Indeed, Sturridge’s most impressive Premier League displays came on loan at Bolton in 2010/11. Handed a regular role at the Reebok under Owen Coyle, Sturridge – playing through the middle in a 4-4-2 – produced eight strikes in just 12 appearances; a sign of the goalscoring capabilities he hopes to bring to Anfield.

The Prospects

Upon arriving at the club, Sturridge once again reiterated a desire to play centrally but, within Rodgers’ default 4-3-3 formation, a role on the flank looks the likeliest outcome. With Luis Suarez’s displays through the middle bringing the Uruguayan 15 goals already, the former Chelsea man is expected to be handed a right flank berth, swapping wings with the likes of Raheem Sterling or Stewart Downing during matches – a tactic Rodgers has employed on plenty occasions this term.

Indeed, Sturridge’s arrival may well have a knock-on effect on the likes of Sterling. With his threadbare squad stretched to the limit this season, Rodgers has had little option but to play the teenager in every match since Gameweek 2 but cited fatigue when dropping Sterling to the bench during the recent festive fixture pileup – with more options on the flanks, he may choose to manage the teenager’s appearances slightly more efficiently. Downing’s game time is clearly at threat – he has started seven of the last eight now but Rodgers is now afforded the chance to pick and choose his wide men on either side of Suarez, while the likes of Suso and Jonjo Shelvey look set to drop further down the pecking order.

In a sense, the signing of Sturridge is somewhat at odds with Rodgers’ passing game ethos. Accusations of selfishness have been somewhat justified – the new arrival’s penchant for the spectacular, shooting from distance when a simple pass seems the obvious option; this will have to be reined in as he adjusts to his new surrounds. Rodgers talked up his new acquisition yesterday, pinpointing the qualities that persuaded him to splash the cash:

“He will give us power and presence at the top end of the field but the biggest thing is his hunger to perform. We are bringing in a player who knows he has to perform as he will be playing with one of the biggest clubs in the world. He has got quality. If he wants to stay at the top level, this is probably his last chance. I think he will prove a big hit and give us another attacking thread.”

Priced at 7.3 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 8.5 in the Sky Sports game, Sturridge’s appeal is dented by his classification as a forward. With Sterling priced at 5.6 and listed as a midfielder in FPL, his 20% owners will be happy to hold, while Suarez’s electrifying performances surely make him the must-have Liverpool forward; therefore keeping Sturridge firmly in the Fantasy background. A regular role under Rodgers will certainly afford him the platform to justify his own self-belief but with Liverpool offering plenty other options such as Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson elsewhere, it may well take something quite spectacular for Sturridge to rocket onto Fantasy radars and come under consideration for our three-man forward lines.

Top 15 FPL scorers - midfielders CAPITALIZED.

    149 RVP

    127 Suarez
    122 MICHU

    115 Ba
    115 CAZORLA
    114 GERRARD
    112 MATA
    110 BALE

    105 HAZARD
    107 Tevez
    101 WALCOTT
    100 FELLAINI

    97 Defoe
    95 Lambert
    94 Fletcher

The 3-5-2 bandwagon reflects the points. It's also attractive from a flexibility point of view (the hidden factor I've found very important for squads) because it's easier to transfer between midfielders as their prices have less variance than strikers.

There must be a catch somewhere, right? The reason the 3-5-2 hasn't been seriously considered before is that it wasn't affordable. It's Michu and Fellaini's low pricings that make it work. The strategy entirely relies on them. If you go with it, it's a bet that they will outscore midpriced strikers for the rest of the season. A pretty good bet. There is of course some risk, I'd say the main one is that they are playing for smaller teams which may run out of steam as the season drags on. That said, Swansea and Everton have deepened their squads considerably this year.

The other risk is a positional change that reduces goal output; for Fellaini and Michu I think it's low but present. The risk of changing position also applies to other midfielders of course - in fact all of Mata, Gerrard and Walcott have benefited from being moved more advanced over the season. As they say, the value of your investment may go down as well as up...

Would also be nice to see someone do the same table for value instead of points (maybe have a minimum number of points to exclude daft options).

Well, I'm WCing after the DGW and there's only one thing I'm sure of atm.
RVP, Aguero, Suarez up top for me.
My mids will be 2 biggies, 2 mediums and a cheap.

Great post. I just think as the season wears on, there will be more and more strikers we want. And with just 3 spots we will want to use all 3 of them. Either way, i'm saving my winter WC until after the transfer window, i think there will be more twists and turns to come yet. For example, what if Michu and Fellaini get injured? It would take quite a few transfers to sort the team out.

Only thing I would say is that rotation between two cheap attackers *can* work wonders and allow for funds to be put into other areas. Puncheon appears to be a very decent uber cheap prospect and he's ridiculously selfish. If a bargain option appears that rotates with him well then I may be tempted to keep with him.

And Michu and Fellaini make them a real possibility. The challenge of a midyear WC that everyone has is that one has to put the discipline of avoiding points chasing and bandwagons aside to simply answer your very question -- who will score the most from here on out? I have not had Suarez and am certainly paying for it, but the WC is not about whether a ship has sailed or not, it is about assessing the player's price and figuring out if they are worth it. Suarez is playing like a 13 or 14m attacker right now. He has to be on board.

Great post. I was looking at ppg yesterday and Puncheon and Ruiz stood out as the most attractive budget options at either position, which is a first step toward value though it is so subjective since price is relative to what the owner wants to spend. Will take a look.

Thought provoking post, i'm on wildcard so it's a decision I have to make. RVP and Suarez I don't feel I can touch (even with Suarez having those 3 tough away games) due to their form so it's between having Berbatov/Benteke or someone and having a Bale/Cazorla.

I just feel that the inflexibility caused by 3 big hitters up front will cause you a headache later on. Someone gets injured and you're forced to move them on for a big hitting midfielder will either cost 2 transfers or 2 weeks.

I'd much rather swap one of Suarez for Gerrard or Aguero for Silva and spend the money elsewhere.

Yeah that's a weakness of big strikers up against a strength of big midfielders - very few big striker replacements, plenty of big midfield replacements. Looks like a possible big hitter in falcao looks less likely with Ba going to Chelsea.

The main thing bugging me now is whether a budget 5.0er mid should be in my team. That changes everything else

Just one query. REPOST from earlier, but with a little more clarity

    - 2FTs
    - Don't want to touch my defence yet, will clear it out with the WC
    - Need a one week punt on a cheap striker before I bench him for 23 and WC him out on 24
    - Have Bale for Spurs vs QPR
    - Looking at Defoe > Lambert

Hey Lads.....seeing loads of WC 3-4-3 vs 3-5-2 discussions. imho....at this stage of the season, your team still needs to be balanced (with many options for flexibility ie....an uber cheap defense might look good on paper, but it will take you 2 or 3 transfers to fix going forward) .....it is far too early in the season to suggest that either is the correct way to go.

Further....the "who to bench" headache is one that i absolutely loath having each week.

    Just my 2 cents.

Feb-March would be my guess Jafooli. Chelsea have no time in January unless they are out of the FA Cup.
      But even then it's tight.
February is not much better. March if they stay in all the cups imo.

I'm thinking of getting rid of Enrique, best defender for the next THREE games? I have Baines.

    A) Gibbs
    B) Zab
    C) Rafael/Evans
    D) Azp/Luiz
    E) Vertonghen
    F) Something else?

Is really Gibbs the best option if trading in a defender now just because of DGW? His fixtures are horrid and Arsenal haven't been too convincing at the back.

Right in the heat of the moment everyone seems to be overlooking defence and goalies.

Worth getting a rotating cover for Begovic?
...having only him fit has been a blessing for me

Evra, Zab & Baines worth it for attacking potential?

Stokes solidness come to an end? Newcastle to takes over the mantle with Debuchy and possible change of tactics?

Goalie-wise, the problem is that all the rest with a good chance of clean sheets is over £5.0m. Playing Bego every week with £1.0m more to spend elsewhere is so much more appealing.

Bego is in the big hitter bracket. Bego plus £4.0m filler is the same proposition as Hart plus £4.0m filler, or De Gea plus £4.0m filler (OK, that one sounded a lot better at the start of the season)

I'm thinking of getting a cheapie that plays as cover for Bego, Fed or Bunn, probably Bunn.

Seriously looking at Zab as he's nailed on until their injury problems clears up, even then he should be first choice with the shift he's put in. As for Evra I think I'd rather have Baines.

I don't see any reason why Stoke solidness would come to an end, I'll keep Begovic but that's enough cover. Maybe if Wilson returns @ 4.0

Someone asked earlier but I didn't see a reply and can't see it in the rules - with Bale and Fellaini coming off flags, and having plenty of transfers in, when will their price rise? Can I trust fiso/totalfpl?

Worried I'll miss out on one of them trying to boost team value in players I won't end up keeping. Appreciate any help, thanks.

When the flag comes off, their price is frozen for about a week. After that the transfers-in count is reset and from that point on their price will start rising. Don't ask me when that will happen but it will be before the next gameweek starts.

I think that 352 will have some roller-coaster weeks. As in 1-2 good weeks, followed by 1-2 bad weeks.

Just look at this week as an example.

My front line of RVP(C) Suarez Berba scored a total of 56.

The Fabulous 5 in midfield of Bale, Mata, Fellaini, Michu, Walcott scored 15.

Of course you'll get the weeks where your mids get huge hauls and you get a huge green, but then there's the weeks where you get a huge red. Im all for consistency, and therefore will be going 343.

Just my opinion on the matter after much thinking

ok simply put there is no way I can afford a front 8 of

    Mata, Bale, Michu, Fellaini, Puncheon

RvP, Suarez, Aguero. I tried it just now and got this

    Migs, Fed

    Clyne, Nelsen, Davies, _____, _______

    Mata, Bale, Michu, Fellaini

    RvP, Suarez, Aguero

only had 7.4 for those last 2 defensive spots. Who would you drop from that lot. Fellaini?

Are you sure you don't want Tevez instead? If he doesn't play you can have Puncheon off the bench, which is exactly what you want from a high-value eighth attacker. His five off the bench for Ba yesterday eased that shock.
