Abounding in every kitchen, but an unsatisfactory meal in themselves: budget defenders are the condiments of the Fantasy football feast. Only earning a place at the table if they marry with the main course, for every ketchup thereโ€™s a forgotten chutney, peacefully gathering mould in the dusty recesses of the cupboard. With few Fantasy managers ambitious of employing their free transfers to chop and change the cheapies that no longer cut the mustard, and fewer still prepared to pay points to preserve themselves from such pickles, Winter Wildcard season affords a welcome window to clear the shelves and stock up afresh for the closing months of the campaign:

Boasting both long term promise and short term appeal, Swanseaโ€™s Ben Davies stakes a claim as the most appetising option in the budget bracket at present. Promoted to the starting line up in the wake of Neil Taylorโ€™s broken leg on September 1, the young Welshman has ably fended off competition from emergency signing Dwight Tiendalli to make the left-back berth his own. Initially priced at just 4.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), a cool million less than the rest of the Swansea rearguard, Davies has emerged as the obvious choice for those keen to tap into the clean sheets on offer from Michael Laudrupโ€™s side.

Swansea sit joint seventh in the Premier League in terms of clean sheets, and fifth in terms of fewest goals conceded โ€“ on both counts thatโ€™s comfortably ahead of Manchester United, and crucially itโ€™s a better defensive record than the other teams with budget defenders on offer. Of players with an initial price of 4.0 in the FPL, Davies currently sits third in terms of total points on 56, with only the potentially Canada-bound Ryan Nelsen and the hamstrung Hammer Joey Oโ€™Brien ahead of him. Even if Nelsen stays at Loftus Road and Oโ€™Brien quickly recovers, the Swansโ€™ fixture list should afford Davies the chance to challenge for the top spot over the coming weeks.

Stoke arrive at the Liberty on Saturday in uncharacteristically shaky form, having shipped 10 goals in their last three games and failed to find the net away from the Britannia since December 1. Following that are trips to Sunderland and West Ham โ€“ both of whom boast an underwhelming tally of just 24 goals for the season thus far. As the spring approaches the Swans host strugglers QPR and Newcastle, with a testing trip to Anfield tucked in between.

Priced at just 4.2 in the FPL (3.6 in the Sky Sports game) Fantasy managers are likely to have few qualms about playing Davies at home and benching him for tricky away trips but itโ€™s worth noting that the Swans backline has been breached just twice in their last five away games. Indeed, a total of nine goals against outside of the Liberty is the joint-best away defence along with Arsenal. With fullbacks afforded license to roam in Laudrupโ€™s system, those who opt for a home-only schedule over the short-term (STK, QPR, NEW) should provide Davies good chances to augment his haul of two assists and reap returns at both ends of the pitch.

          I meant from a fantasy perspective regarding Pienaar. And there's no stand out options in forwards atm like earlier in the season.. when 45% of the game owned Tevez and he scored week in week out.

          Do you hate me, or just have a stick up ur ass every time I post? Its called an opinion, get over it.

            Just reacting to statements that don't ring true to me.

            Are you honestly saying no forwards look appealing at the moment? I don't believe you do. Fair enough if you're into your hyperbole but it comes across too much like laziness to me.

            I have nothing against you....just reacting to bland generalisations and untruths.

              Fair enough, but forwards right now seem to be very inconsistent, thus making them unappealing to me. Yes there are some very legit options as 1/2 week punts, but looking long-term, I am still unsure of who stands out -- bar RVP.

              Catch my drift?

        Not really, just the usual must haves(Bego/Rvp/Michu/Bale/Mata/Felliani)

        DEF: I need to get rid of Nelsen/Gorkks/Foster/Garrido for starters. I'm not comfortable with anything close to 5m at the back, but Luiz/Gibss/Evra/Baines could all have a 10pts+ at any given weekend.

        The power 5 would mean keeping Walcott and selling puncheon and getting a peanut 3rd striker. I'm not sure about Arsenal/Walcott. Can't trust them. Will monitor the DGW.

        FWDS: Rvp is easy. Berba and Ba needs to go. I don't get the Kun love(yet) and as you know I have a good feeling about Tevez, especially at his current price. Sturridge is very tempting as alternative to Suarez.

        Differentials: Nani/Kagawa/Cisse/Fletcher/Johnson(sun)/Lulaka

    Good Morning. I am leaning towards saving my WC for as long as I can for transfers and returns from injury. I have a FT. Should I save it until after GW 23 and do Lambert > Pog to fund Cazorla > Mata for free? Or use the FT to bring in Demel in for Martin R, and use the WC after GW 23 to revamp my team? Thanks. Doesn't look like much to sort out to me CCC. Next week gives you a ten day transfer window. Where the following and last Winter Wildcard week only gives 4 or 5 days.

        Interesting. Well I may take the WC next week then to rise some price rises, especially as it seems many will be bringing in new players, but I would like to see how some of these transfers work out for Sturridge, Ba, and injury returns like Wilson and perhaps McCartney. Thanks for the input.

              Depends on Gallas and Kaboul I reckon. If Gallas leaves and Kaboul's out for a reasonable length of time then yeah, I think he's a decent bet for his price. I'm not convinced that Martin is nailed on as Hughton bought a brand new back 4 in;

              Whittaker – Turner – Bassong – Garrido

      I like the aguero pick. I'm WC in the last week of jan when he is fit hopefully. You can actually have the big 5 and a big hitting defender with berbs/Rooney/aguero upfront. Rooney + aguero are big hitters who will be your differentials if you go that way. That's if u think Luiz + Rooney will outscore rvp + demel for example

      He definitely got lucky but there's three distinct reasons why he got them.

      a) he's on corners - Lampard was going to head his corner in anyway before Walters decided he'd do it himself
      b) when he was brought down for the pen he was one-on-one with the keeper effectively...so he was in the right position in the first place - if you're in the right place you can get lucky
      c) Hazard's goal was of course all his own skill but Mata had to be there to lay it off to him and Mata always has millions of assists every season because of this...he is the key creator, whether it be a cross/through ball or simply laying it off to a teammate.

    Still tinkering with my post DGW WC.

    Bego - 3.9
    Rafael - Dawson - Cuellar - Wilson - Davies
    Mata - Bale - Michu - Walcott - Fellaini
    RVP - Aguero - Pogre

    Depending on the situation I'll do this in GW 26 :
    Fellaini Pogre -> Puncheon Sturridge

    Bego - 3.9
    Rafael - Dawson - Cuellar - Wilson - Davies
    Mata - Bale - Michu - Walcott - Puncheon
    RVP - Aguero - Sturridge

      It's highly probable that Santi may make it to the score or assist sheets but I would dare myself bet what I have on one of ARS forwards - Podolski or Giroud, in which case the German has made it to my team for the coming double gameweek. ๐Ÿ™‚

          That's essentially what I have done - Ba to Podolski. However, I would suggest Mata and Bale be left untouched. They could potentially haul double figures in the coming gameweeks, in my opinion.
