Abounding in every kitchen, but an unsatisfactory meal in themselves: budget defenders are the condiments of the Fantasy football feast. Only earning a place at the table if they marry with the main course, for every ketchup there’s a forgotten chutney, peacefully gathering mould in the dusty recesses of the cupboard. With few Fantasy managers ambitious of employing their free transfers to chop and change the cheapies that no longer cut the mustard, and fewer still prepared to pay points to preserve themselves from such pickles, Winter Wildcard season affords a welcome window to clear the shelves and stock up afresh for the closing months of the campaign:

Boasting both long term promise and short term appeal, Swansea’s Ben Davies stakes a claim as the most appetising option in the budget bracket at present. Promoted to the starting line up in the wake of Neil Taylor’s broken leg on September 1, the young Welshman has ably fended off competition from emergency signing Dwight Tiendalli to make the left-back berth his own. Initially priced at just 4.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), a cool million less than the rest of the Swansea rearguard, Davies has emerged as the obvious choice for those keen to tap into the clean sheets on offer from Michael Laudrup’s side.

Swansea sit joint seventh in the Premier League in terms of clean sheets, and fifth in terms of fewest goals conceded – on both counts that’s comfortably ahead of Manchester United, and crucially it’s a better defensive record than the other teams with budget defenders on offer. Of players with an initial price of 4.0 in the FPL, Davies currently sits third in terms of total points on 56, with only the potentially Canada-bound Ryan Nelsen and the hamstrung Hammer Joey O’Brien ahead of him. Even if Nelsen stays at Loftus Road and O’Brien quickly recovers, the Swans’ fixture list should afford Davies the chance to challenge for the top spot over the coming weeks.

Stoke arrive at the Liberty on Saturday in uncharacteristically shaky form, having shipped 10 goals in their last three games and failed to find the net away from the Britannia since December 1. Following that are trips to Sunderland and West Ham – both of whom boast an underwhelming tally of just 24 goals for the season thus far. As the spring approaches the Swans host strugglers QPR and Newcastle, with a testing trip to Anfield tucked in between.

Priced at just 4.2 in the FPL (3.6 in the Sky Sports game) Fantasy managers are likely to have few qualms about playing Davies at home and benching him for tricky away trips but it’s worth noting that the Swans backline has been breached just twice in their last five away games. Indeed, a total of nine goals against outside of the Liberty is the joint-best away defence along with Arsenal. With fullbacks afforded license to roam in Laudrup’s system, those who opt for a home-only schedule over the short-term (STK, QPR, NEW) should provide Davies good chances to augment his haul of two assists and reap returns at both ends of the pitch.

You're confusing a few RMTs on here with the actual reality. Aguero and Sturridge are owned by barely anybody in FPL...it's not a boring template but actually quite an original plan.

Depends if you have WC left or not.

If you have then its worth doing as you can ship Cole out afterwards. If not I'd probably keep Lambert in.

West Ham not in the best of form, Cole not scoring and QPR appear to have tightened up defensively now. Arsenal will also not be an easy game for them.

Not really; in hindsight a cheap defence with a couple of stoke defenders mixed in probably would have done just as well - I think Davies, Cuellar (when fit), Dawson and Demel are reasonable options

Demel is not as nailed on as the others.
West Ham isn't exactly tight at the back like the beginning of the season.
Their fixture isn't looking particularly good.
ful SWA avl isn't exactly easy as Berba and Michu can easily score against anyone,
and TOT sto MUN che and liv in the 6 fixture after is just a no-go.

        for 4.0 he's a good 5th defender though.

only other real options around that price are nelsen (leaving i think), clyne/shaw (sot don't keep many cs) a reading defender (probably not nailed on and don't keep many cs) and wilson (still injured as of now)

True he's an okay 5th defender.

But I'd rather look at Norwich or QPR defense rather than Demel.
Martin, Nelsen (I think he's staying for at least until summer).

I'd go with Harte for a 5th defender though as I will almost never use him and get a 'better' 4th defender.

The thing I don't like about the Power 5 is that I think there will be at least 2 in form strikers (+RVP) at any given time and if that's the case then obviously I wouldn't be able to fit the third striker in.

From a list of Suarez, Sturridge, Ba, Cisse, Rooney, Aguero, Tevez and Defoe, there's a good chance two of them would be in goal scoring form and so I think it's a good idea to have 2 forward spots along side RVP to easily transfer in the forwards I want.

I think everyone should have 3-4 of the 5 and rotate through transfers according to form and fixtures.

If you get the defence and keeper set up okay you can rotate the big 5 mids and 2 forward spots every other week.

Hardest thing would be dropping one of them although I think Fellaini and Michu, while still providing awesome value, aren't in the same form they were in early in the season.

You can make the same argument the pther way around. 3 fwds would mean only 4 mid slots and you'd miss out on one of mata, bale, michu, fellaini, walcott (santi, gerrard in the mix).

basically you need to evaluate who scores more, your 3rd forward or your 5th mid.

This is just my opinion but I think forwards are more devastating when they go on a good run. Guys like Aguero and Suarez can be both explosive and consistent when they're on a roll.

(Although same could be said about Bale)

yeah that might be true. i have come to the conclusion that i want 5 mids in my team because of their value. i will have to accept that i'm gonna lose out on some points provided by forwards. can't have it all, you win some & lose some.

Na far too sideways as you say. You could be really brave and do Michu to Walcott and Suarez to Sturridge?

see, Rooney has been largely forgotten about but he is in one of my Jan WC's.

          as is Nani.

          Kags really worth another shout?

I dunno, but shirley Rooney is going to get gametime to get up and running again. He could rake up the points gw 27-30.

    Begovic
    demel davies rafael (luiz cueller)
    michu fellaini bale walcott(c) (sterling)
    berbs rvp ba

    have 1Ft and 0.8m ITB.

    A: sterling + ba >> nolan + podolski
    B: sterling + luiz >> gibbs + nolan
    C: luiz + berbs >> gibbs + podolski
    D: mannone + ba >> sczenscny + podolski

am going to WC in gw24 so these are all 1 week moves…

my current defense is: begovic rafael demel davies (luiz cueller)….ideally i want to bring in a westham and ars attacker (i.e. A) but since my def is a bit weak, the other options seems more sense

    thoughts?
