634x258 The Stock Check

A superb second-half comeback from Southampton stuns Stamford Bridge and denies Rafa Benitez a much-needed home win. Demba Ba notches a first league goal for the Blues, while strikes for Rickie Lambert and Jason Puncheon ensure that Gameweek 22’s double was a profitable one. With the FA Cup replays covered in the Scout Notes to follow, here’s the Stock Check on tonight’s league action…

On the Up

Demba Ba
The talk before the game was that the Senegalese striker was unlikely to start two matches in the space of four days but, by naming him in the lineup ahead of Fernando Torres, there is perhaps already a pecking order forming. Ba duly took just 25 minutes to again show his quality with a first league strike for his new club. Ba owners will, however, be concerned on possible rotation ahead of the visit of Arsenal and it’s likely that, week-to-week, that threat will remain with Torres waiting in the wings.

Eden Hazard
The Belgian timed a return to form perfectly to reward double Gameweek investors, scoring for the second consecutive match to take him to six goals for the season. With a seven-point return before bonus, Hazard matched the much-fancied Juan Mata in the Gameweek, despite the Spaniard’s hat-trick of assists at Stoke.

César Azpilicueta
The decision to rest Branislav Ivanovic to the bench and retain the Spaniard at right-back could be seen as a huge vote of confidence. While Ivanovic was perhaps due a break, Azpilicueta has now started the last six and 11 of the last 12 league outings. Keep the role for the visit of Arsenal and we can start to consider him as Rafa Bentiez’s first choice for that position, with Ivanovic perhaps destined to compete for the central defensive roles.

Rickie Lambert
Thirteen consecutive league starts came to an end as Nigel Adkins opted to stat with Guly Do Prado in his side, presumably feeling that Lambert needed to rest his legs for the home clash with Everton. Once again, however, he was not to be denied, cracking his second strike of the Gameweek to repay those who showed faith in the Saints’ hitman. With ten goals for the season, Lambert goes on presenting superb value for his modest price tag.

Jason Puncheon
A first goal in six league starts was worth the wait as the Southampton winger silenced the Chelsea fans with a strike of real quality. Like Lambert, Puncheon remains a hugely popular choice at the budget end of the market and, with doubts mounting on Raheem Sterling’s security of start for Liverpool, tonight’s goal will have boosted Puncheon further in the minds of potential suitors searching for a fifth midfielder in their January wildcard selections.

Nathaniel Clyne
The right-back completes Southampton’s trio of strong budget options having returned his third assist of the season in tonight’s game. With Luke Shaw also impressing on the left flank, Nigel Adkins’ side have two 4.0 options that appear to present an attacking intent that warrants interest.

Going Down

Branislav Ivanovic
We can’t be hasty and start to question Ivanovic’s security of start just yet – particularly given the fact that the Serb has started the last 14 competitive matches for the Blues. He was due a rest at some point and Rafa’s decision could be made with the visit of Arsenal in mind. However, having made glaring errors in the recent Capital One Cup tie, Ivanovic owners are suddenly fidgeting at the prospect of the 7.1 valued defender slipping down the pecking order and competing with the likes of Gary Cahill, John Terry and David Luiz for a central defensive role.

Fernando Torres
Does Rafa’s decision to start with Ba once again suggest that, already, the Senegalese striker is in the driving seat for the centre-forward role? The weekend clash with Arsenal will tell us more. Should Torres find himself benched again, it will indicate a pecking order has been established.

David Luiz
Back in defence for the second match running, Luiz owners will now be concerned that Rafa has cooled on the idea of deploying the Brazilian in a midfield role. John Terry’s likely return is set to add to the completion for starts at the back and with Luiz having started the last seven, there will be concern that a rest is also on the horizon.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I need to confess. I got contacted on Saturday by a guy I had no idea who was. He had read about me in the newspaper and searched me up on facebook. He asked me if I could be so kind to take a look at his wc-team. He desperately needed to win his mini league, and he was trailing. So as nr.1 in Norway and 31 in the world I was supposed to give him advice.....! Oh, how wrong he took. I spent two hours chatting with him, and I adviced him to take out Turnbull. And I adviced him to go for turner in defence. So far so good. I also adviced him to go for the fab-5 in midfield. Which can still prove to be a good ting. But I adviced him to think ahead and sell Lambert and Puncheon.....! I guess I wont hear from him again....

What is everyone's opinion on Mata starting against Arsenal?

For such a big game, wouldn't he be likely to start and come off around 75mins if need be? (Will have had 4 days rest)

As for Ba, I can see him being benched and coming on around 70mins

Hmmm. Ba -> Pod for -4 looks slightly tempting, but you'd have a benching problem. I feel like you have a bit of a benching problem right now, because if Ba starts he could wreak havoc. Tough one, I'd probably stick and bench Ba unless it looks likely he'll start. Lambert was rested mid-week and looks sure to start.

No to the 4 point hit..Podolski plays as a winger and will have to score once and play 60 mins in both matches to make it worthwhile..certainly no guarantees there..
If Berba scores you will prob be kicking yourself..

Gibbs is the better option for me..gets in much better positions to score/assist

Hmmm... tough one. Cazorla has been a bit sluggish lately, but has DGW. Mata is on fire and has 2 goals 2 assists in 2 Arsenal-games. I think I'd do it though, the big teams usually deliver pretty decent in DGWs and Cazorla should be nailed on for 180.

Exactly, feels a bit overly cautious to not go for it, doesn't it? Especially as I'll just WC Mata back in afterwards...

I'm not really into hits, that's the thing. Hardly ever take them.

Yeah it does feel a bit defensive. It's DGW, your best bet for a hit so could be justified. Also if you are superstitious, Cazorla is due a major haul.

    Ba & Berba -> Pod & Dzeko/Sturr, worth -4?

Thanks for the feedback on last page Dago. What do the rest of you think? Just seems unlikely that either will score big since I don't think Ba will start.

Horsemeat tesco into google for a serious waste of your time in your life. As an aside, time is the most precious resource that humans have, don't waste it on brain numbing junk such as this. If you must, try not eating any processed foods, my nutritionist girlfriend tells me that the majority of those burgers are filler, which include cow brain and hoof. If you must eat meat, eat the lean stuff and not the processed gickna.

Any ideas as to what stratagy to take forward, considering I still have the WC to use and already have 3 DGWers in my team with 1FT to come this week. I really wanna maximise my potential to win this thing (as we all do i'm sure). Any thoughts or opinions appreciated.

Just concentrate on winning that league, and overall rank will look after itself.

check out what your close rivals are doing...and if you're in first place already, dont be afraid to 'cover' their picks if they start to gain momentum.

            +1

People tend to take gambles during the run in of the season, so it's not uncommon to surge up the rankings when other people take hits in a last desperate attempt to win ML's or h2h's.

Yep. My 'rival' used his WC this week so I think because he has very little wham or arse cover I can do another -4 to cover his covering of my team. Then I can WC in the next GW or 2 to cover the coming GW's where I can capitalise on the pack predicting what I am doing which will leverage me to a different level where my team will be set up for the GW's to come. How is my logic?

          Crikey that's some cash league!

I was in a similar position at this stage of the season a couple of years ago - played it safe, no hits, made sure I had the players who would hurt me most if I didn't, almost treated it like a game of chicken - and sure enough everyone around me started flinching and gambling, and losing, and I ended up top 100. May not work for everyone (sure hasn't worked for me since) - but I think when you're up in the upper echelons the temptation is to gamble and take risks when in fact the best tactic is probably to keep doing what got you there in the first place.

At the moment, I have not preempted any moves made by opponents. I am 'playing the fixtures' and reckon that this should be the strategy of all FPL players. If I was to only play the people in my ML, I think that would blind me to the easier games that my options could possibly afford me in looking at the league table and stats. This is why I joined this site 2 weeks ago for this type of banter. Thanks all for engaging in the dialogue!

    Baines / Walker / O'Brien / Huth / Bassong
    Santi / Snod / Michu / Fellaini / Pienaar
Suarez / Ba / Tommy Smith

Want to try and load up on Arsenal and West Ham players for the DGW and then use my Jan WC after that - got 2 FT this week but after swapping Walker for Sagna, even though I'd have 1.3mill to spend I don't know who's best to get after that..? Can't afford Walcott and not sure if Nolan is enough of an upgrade, even on Snod..?

    RVP, Ba, Lambert.

    I have .4m and 1 FT.
Should I transfer out Hazard for Cazorla or indeed Ba to Podolski. Long term I'd prefer both Hazard and Ba, do I have enough coverage?
