Arsenal’s double Gameweek 23 is set to increase interest in Lukas Podolski as Fantasy managers look to take advantage of the London side’s visit to Chelsea and a home game with West Ham. Priced at 8.2 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Podolski looks a ready-made replacement for Demba Ba, who was snapped up by 228,600 managers ahead of the Blues’ double Gameweek 22. Many of the former Newcastle striker’s owners are already nervous about his long-term value under Chelsea’s rotation-obsessed manager Rafa Benitez, with the suggestion that Fernando Torres will start tonight’s encounter with Southampton. Podolski is a straight swap option in the same price bracket.

Amongst Arsenal’s forwards, Podolski certainly looks the safest option; having cemented a role on the left of an attacking three, he has started all but two of the side’s Premier League matches this season. With 89 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game he is Arsenal’s highest ranked forward – only out-of-position midfielder Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla have produced more points. With six goals scored and six assists this season, Podolski has both threat and creativity in his locker and has attracted 11 FPL bonus points, a tally bettered only by Cazorla and equalled by Walcott. In the Sky Sports game, where he is priced at £8.5m, Podolski also represents good value, having notched 88 points.

While Podolski, who has four double-digit points hauls to his name, is primed for investment ahead of the double gameweek he is not too shabby a purchase for the long term as well. Looking ahead, Arsenal have a kind run of fixtures over the next six game weeks (LIV, STO, sun, AVL, tot, EVE) including four home games and a North London derby with Tottenham, which are often high scoring ties. With Mikel Arteta sidelined due to a calf injury, Podolski looks set to be next in line for spot-kicks, according to his manager – furthering his appeal as a mid-price option.

Those investing in his services can also be assured of a strong pedigree, having scored 44 times in his 106 appearances for the German national side. This includes three goals in the 2006 World Cup and a further three at Euro 2008. Prior to joining Arsenal, on a four year deal this summer, he had just recorded his best top flight club haul for FC Cologne, where he scored 18 times and assisted seven goals in 29 Bundesliga appearances.

There is a slight caveat, though. During tight games Podolski is often sacrificed early on for a more defensive minded player. In Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Southampton in Gameweek 21 he left the pitch on the 57 minute mark and in the following week against Manchester City at home, he departed before the hour once again; while his starting role is not in doubt, there’s every chance Podolski won’t last the full 90 minutes in either match.

Fantasy managers need to assess whether, over two appearances, he’ll be given opportunity to return scores that will surpass the alternatives up front. While Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla remain firm favourites for the armband, Podolski appears to offer the next best route for those looking to treble up on attacking assets in Wenger’s lineup or avoid using up two midfield slots, with such riches available in that position elsewhere. The injury to Arteta, bringing spot-kicks into the equation, may just seal the deal for some.

So what are the thoughts on Cuellar's spot in the defense long-term with the new defender coming in? Will he still be nailed on? Are there better options? Or is Mig the only safe route for now?

          Neigh problem.

Personally, I don't think we've got enough to go on regarding Cuellar and Darth Kader right now so if you need to make a long term decision I'd go Migs.

After the responses I got before, I might turn this site into a way to help me with my writing...

I won't really, but the opening paragraph to the novel I'm currently writing has been bugging me for ages - it just seems too convoluted to me - and there are clearly some bright people on here (shame that Chu Young isn't around to help though...). This is the last time I'll share something like this, but hopefully, if nothing else, it makes a change from RMWCTs.

"It is difficult for one who has got a degree, or is in the process of acquiring one, to comprehend that their job search may not consist of entering their dream vocation immediately upon completion of their student life. It will most likely involve a forty year struggle, if they are unfortunate enough to live that long – or at least live that long with such unremitting blind optimism – of relentless applications to, and rejections from, menial jobs that they would, in their younger days, never have even contemplated stooping to. That will be the scenario for those who work hard. For the majority, enterprise and endeavour would probably never have existed even in the most radiant of University days, and if it did, it will have more than subsided after a month or two of fruitless applications and searches to find jobs that might at least not result in either suicide, murder, or, in many instances, both."

If you feel it's too convoluted, why not cut down on the fancy wording? I mean vocation, unremitting, and so on. The "It will (...)" sentence is way too long in my opinion, makes the whole thing stutter a bit.

That said, it seems like a fun book to read. Keep it up, and pay attention to the fact that I know f*ck-all about writing and rhetoric.

I don't think there are many shorter words than unremitting that have the same meaning (relentless is the only alternative that springs to mind). I like playing with language, but I do agree that that sentence is too long - a difficult one to divide though.

Sadly, this is a position I find myself in right now... I graduated over 2 years ago, and I'm still looking for a bloody job relative to my studies... hospitality just doesn't cut it any more...

Having had literally hundreds of job applications turned down with token email rejection responses or, even better - completely ignored - is a very disconcerting, utterly harrowing and depressing experience...

I found it hard to maintain any sort of continuing motivation to look for jobs when this happened...

Yep, exactly the situation I was in - hence deciding to write a novel about it. Got a job now, but it's a very tedious office job, and nothing to do with an English degree. I suppose the only positive is that we're all in the same boat. I went to a fairly prestigious Uni (University of Liverpool), yet no one on my course is currently doing anything that they want to do for a sustained period of time.

It reads too much like an internet post complaining about the tough time of being a new graduate in the beginning. It has to start a bit darker imo, with not so much detail about the struggles of a modern-day grad. You might make more subtle hints about the current difficulties of being a new grad, without spelling it out in such detail. What i mean, is, i'm not sure that many people will sympathise with someone who's going to murder himself, or another, just because they can't find a job. It needs more pain, more troubles.

The murder/suicide thing isn't meant to be literal, it's hyperbole about the tedium of office jobs. It's more an introduction than part of the story, it's setting up the situation prior to the actual characters being introduced. So there are 5 pages in a similar vein, and then that section ends:

"This is, of course, only the situation for a select few people. One of those people was Robert Slater."

Quite funny I thought. This is the most convoluted part IMO:

"It will most likely involve a forty year struggle, if they are unfortunate enough to live that long – or at least live that long with such unremitting blind optimism – of relentless applications to, and rejections from, menial jobs that they would, in their younger days, never have even contemplated stooping to."

      How about:

"It will most likely involve a forty year struggle - forty years of relentless applications to, and rejections from, menial jobs that they would, in their younger days, never have even contemplated stooping to. That is if they are unfortunate enough to live that long - or at least live that long with such unremitting blind optimism."

You might also want to use one word instead of two on some occasions - eg I prefer 'unremitting optimism' to 'unremitting blind optimism', or just one of 'enterprise and endeavour'.

And on a similar note, does it really add anything to say" It is difficult for one who has got a degree, or is in the process of acquiring one," when you could just say: "It is difficult for one who is in the process of acquiring a degree" - and lose a subclause.

Good luck, nice change from agonising over Cesar vs Begovic.

I just totted up the number of clean sheets Stoke got after Xmas last season. It was none, or one. I know they were exhausted after the Europa League but I see them as a first half of the season team.

Excellent, this is extremely helpful - that division of the convoluted sentence seems so obvious now you've done it. I think the has a degree/currently acquiring one is necessary, because after this I discuss the difference (while doing a degree, the prospects still seem bright, still enclosed in that academic world).

Very helpful post though - cheers!

You're welcome - I'd just add that it doesn't have to be lawyer-proof, so if you just want to talk about getting a degree in the first sentence and then go on to talk about having got one later, that is fine. Opening sentence of any book has got to grab the reader....

I did like it though - Generation X was the best book of its era IMO. Actually, not a great book, but captured the Zeitgeist.

The beginning and the end of the piece made sense to me and indeed struck cord as I am a graduate with a first class degree in a moderately paid job simply waiting for the time when my student loan expires as I have no intention of paying it off. The middle of the piece lost me. However I wouldn't necessarily recommend removing it. Book are meant to be convoluted

Ha, sounds good to me. Graduated 5 years ago, still don't know what I want to do and certainly not using my (decent) degree. Fantasy football keeps us all going though... maybe that needs to be in there somewhere? 😉

My main comment is that, these days, it's probably quite easy for people to comprehend all that.... par for the course, unless you're doing something really vocational. I'd be tempted to say it's difficult for them to accept.... instead.

      But it's your book, man.

My initial comment? Far too many commas. Try shorter sentences with a punchier impact. Shorter sentences are easier and more enjoyable read - you don't want readers forgetting what the sentence is trying to say before they get to the end of it! Good advice is that every sentence, and every word, should add something. If it is just there to pad out, or make the paragraph sound more flowery, etc, it doesn't need to be there.

I agree (one of my favourite authors is Hemingway - the master of the concise). I personally don't think there's really too much unnecessary content in there, but I do agree that the sentence structure is unnecessarily complex.

I have some dilemmas about 2 FTs this week, as I am 0.1 short to do the ones I’d love most: Maloney & Berba to JCole & Pod :/ So I need a piece of advice here from you what to do instead:

    A. Maloney + Berba —> JCole + Giroud
    B. Maloney + Berba —> Noble + Podolski
    C. Azpi + Maloney + Berba —> Wisdom + JCole + Podolski for -4 pts hit
    D. Maloney + Berba —> JCole + Dzeko
    E. Maloney + Berba —> JCole + Lukaku

I’ll be wildcarding just after DGW23 and I already have Demel, Mert and Theo from WHU / ARS coverage.

If I was WC-ing now, Michu. Natural goal-scorer, guaranteed to play in the hole or as a striker, HIGHLY unlikely that he will be sold in January while Fellaini on the other hand has some rumors surrounding him.

Some people on here talking about getting in Podolski for a hit...

Certainly not worth it in my opinion... You will be starting with -4 and what ever gains Pod might give you will certainly not be more than 4 points which is an extra goal more than from the player you already have...
