Another Wayne Rooney goal, another Robin Van Persie blank – United’s hard-fought victory at the Cottage added further fuel to the fire for Fantasy managers. Here’s the Stock Check on Saturday’s evening kick-off…

On the Up

Wayne Rooney
Despite being moved to the left midway through the second-half, the former Everton man secured the points with a calm finish. Having grabbed a double last time out against Southampton, Rooney is staking a real case for consideration either as an alternative or partner for Robin Van Persie in our forward lines and looks a real differential with Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership under 7%. His consistency of late has been staggering – tonight’s goal made it eight in the last six league starts.

Jonny Evans
His return to the starting lineup made an immediate difference at the Cottage. United had registered clean sheets in each of Evans’ previous two appearances – given they had conceded in the last three without him, his calming influence at the back looks to be a major factor. With the assist for Rooney’s goal, Evans looks set to earn FPL bonus points to cap another assured display.

Going Down

Robin Van Persie
The Dutchman has now registered back-to-back blanks – coinciding with Rooney’s return to the starting XI. The Dutchman had produced in each of his previous ten and while there’s no doubting his consistency over the season, many are now contemplating a switch as mini-leagues start to heat up with the quest for differentials becoming a key factor. With a favourable run of fixtures ahead, Van Persie’s owners will be confident of a return to form but Rooney’s kinder 11.8 FPL price tag liberates budget to be utilised elsewhere.

Antonio Valencia
Handed a start on the right in a 4-4-2, the former Wigan man disappointed yet again and was hauled off on 65 minutes. It’s a single assist in 11 appearances now for Valencia and with Danny Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa pushing for game time, he could well return to the periphery once more. Fantasy managers have been deprived of an assured midfield asset in the United squad all season: there is little sign of that situation changing.

Brede Hangeland
Owned by more than 6% of the Fantasy Premier League player base, Hangeland has been a major disappointment so far this season: yet again he’s without a goal and, with just three clean sheets, his return have failed to live up to a pre-season billing which hailed him as a potential bargain. Tonight the Norwegian suffered his latest setback, withdrawn at half-time with a knock, rumoured to be an Achilles problem, which may now make him a doubt for Fulham’s next outing at Norwich.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Long post ahead, I'm pretty new around here so don't be too hard on me.
Probably good timing to post here in DZ..

    The RVP vs ROONEY Comparison

I am sure this is the major debate this time around. It's like a dejavu since it's similar to one we have earlier this season. Whether to get Rooney in or the all-so-reliable RVP.

It was established that RVP is a must have up to 2 weeks ago. Suddenly Rooney's 2 fruitful week which coincides with RVP blanks has mad people reconsider whether RVP is worth the exta 2 mill.

So is RVP still a must have? Or will he become the next Baines? (re: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2012/11/18/scout-notes-gameweek-12-saturday/comment-page-1/#comment-4357817)

I ran a comparison tool between Rooney and RVP. I skip the last 2 weeks as it was obvious Rooney pwns RVP is every level. The 'best' range was between Gameweek 6 - 17 where both players played (except for blank week for Rooney in GW 12)

    1. Points & Appearance
Out of 12 games, Rooney started 10(1) vs RVP 12(0).
Rooney played 891 minutes scoring 77 points = 0.086 PPM
RVP played 1059 minutes scoring 82 points = 0.077 PPM

Rooney played 1(1) game less and scored just 5 less than RVP.

    2. Consistency
RVP scored 7 goals and 6 assists in that range. 2 blanks GWs
Rooney scored 7 goals and 6 assists in the same period. 3 blanks GWs.

RVP is more consistent in his return with constant 1 goal or 1 assist in almost every week.
while Rooney is more explosive with couple of goals and assist in some weeks, and then 2 assists in 4 weeks and then explode again.

But in terms of 'blank' weeks both player are closely similar.

    3. Comparisons
Running a comparison tool, Rooney beats RVP 57% to 43%.
But RVP beats Rooney in terms of threat as he gets more shots on goal and touches in penalty area.

I've also put up a Table comparing Rooney vs RVP on those two weeks.
    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/2154/

It is clear that RVP have a higher goal threat while Rooney has more assist potential.
Added to the fact that Rooney has given RVP his penalty taking spot, RVP is becoming more dangerous as 2 of the 7 goals Rooney scored was penalty (and RVP scored 1 free kick from his 7).

    CONCLUSION.

It's hard to draw anything from this, really.
'Simple' stats suggest that Rooney is better per minute than RVP and not too far behind in terms of consistency,
but looking more into depth, RVP seems to be more dangerous.

The fact that Rooney given his penalty kick spot to RVP, may just knicks it for RVP this time.
BUT note that this comparison was 'in the past' while if we put the last 2 weeks performance into the equation Rooney will definitely triumphs over RVP.
And added to the fact that having RVP means you can have better players in other areas.

So the 2.3 million pounds question, RVP or Rooney from here on out?

Rooney explodes. Always has done. I don't think there's ever been such a top player who can have such patchy form. When he's on form you are going to lose out not having him. However, rvps class is consistent. We shouldn't worry about his two blanks as he doesn't really do long barren spells. I say get rid of Rvp at your peril

Funny thing about RVP is, the last time he had 2 blanks, he went on scoring 10 goals 4 assists in his next 10 - just up to last week 😀

The Rooney RVP debate will swing back and forth for the rest of the season, there will be games when RVP scores and Rooney doesnt, GW13 was a prime example as RVP was on a 3 game no goal run, i actually brought him in that week for a grand 4 points (c), but kept faith and the rest is history..

Roo/RVP get 2.3 goals/assists per game between them. You don't get those returns by partnering Roo+Lambert. Maybe with Suarez, but with Coutionho and Sturrodge in the picture I see a lot more value in the front man Sturridge.

see above mate, is it worth ditching one of Fellaini or Michu post-DGW to have Sissoko and allow an RvP, Aguero, Suarez front-line. Logic says Michu, but my whole ML has him, and if it turns out to be a mistake it will cost a lot more to correct than selling Fellaini.

I'd sell Fellaini. As you said, a lot of money is tied up in Michu, and if you do sell him, you probably won't be able to get him back unless you downgrade one of the expensive mids. As for Fellaini, it'd be easier, enjoy his rises this week, then ditch.

Debating much the same; surely bigger gains to be had by saving it for later in the season, when theres potentially a double-DGW. I'm thinking 4 DGW players and an 8 pt hit after is the way to approach this DGW and save the WC.

Morning all. Love catching the end of the DZ, chance for considered thinking on here...

How many points would you take as a hit before considering using a WC?

If, around FA cup semi-final time, we have a bumper DGW I imagine an unused WC could be worth a lot of points, but I may have to take an 8pt hit even to field 10 players in GW27 (damn you Demel and Guthrie!)

Good morning deadzone: parents, insomniacs and the odd degenerate still enjoying Saturday night.

My transfer this week has to be Ba> Suarez.

Is it worth a 4pt hit to do Fletcher>Sturr??

Is it worth a 4pt hit to do Azpi>Enrique or Johnson??

I only have Davies from Swansea and now Suarez as well do I could take this 8 pt hit without taking another hit at the other end.

Azpi/Enrique/Johnson moe - if you think that the will dgw points more will be more than 4 than Azpi will get in his regular game.

I had the chance to have Fellaini Baines or Aguero Zaba + 4 two weeks ago.

I chose the later, feeling stupid right now. The only way Aguero and Zaba can catch up if they score 27 pts tonight. Aguero hattrick + Zaba CS? 😀

I am surprised that Bunn is not expected to get any bps from a game that ended 0:0 after he made 4 saves and saved a penalty...

        Tell me about it.

I think that changes should be made in that regard. Perhaps FPL should increase the weight in bps calcs in penalty saves, saves etc.

At the end of the day how otherwise a gk can generate bps? He can't score, tackle or intercept passes.

not sure 100%. but conceeding a penalty should a worser offence than shots off target, hence more weight on negative influence

          from the PPI definition
          . Player's Performance per match
Players receive points for positive influences on a winning performance (shots on target, tackles, clearances, saves etc). Players have points taken away from their score for negative actions such as shots off target and receiving yellow and/or red cards.

I think there was the same RVP debate at the beginning of the season, too expensive, rest of your team will suffer, blah, blah, blah... And I was actually against having RVP!
I did get him at the end and he has done lots for me!
What I'm thinking about now is that I'm still far behind in overall rankings (just over 7k) and not taking part in any important ML and to go higher you gotta take some calculated risk in this game...
I didn't decide yet what am I'm going to do with RVP as I want to see the City result first and decide about Pre and post DGW players/issues but with CL, FA cup, EPL, Rooney fit and the United leading table by +7 I can see SAF trying to go for 3 trophies this year and that would mean RVP could be rested in few EPL games...
    Lets see!

7k is pretty high! and you can take gambles with the rest of your squad around rvp. LR got giroud in a couple weeks ago and then got baines this last week and as a result shot up the ranks, all while keeping rvp.

    Busy at work

    What would you rather do....?

    A) Get GJ and then have to do another hit to field 11 (i.e. -8 over two GW)
    B) Get Zabaleta for -4 and field 11 GW27
    C) Keep Gibbs and lose value until you can sort it out.

                Old School

GJ has scored 58 points in 11 home games this year - that's an average of 5.27 per game. Past performance is not an indicator of future returns obviously but....blah blah blah.

He is also guaranteed a game in gw29 whereas many aren't due to the FA Cup. Worth bearing in mind when you make a decision.
