A visit from QPR and a trip to Anfield comprise the menu for a Gameweek 26 feast haunted by the prospect of famine for Swansea. With goalkeepers useful instruments in double-then-blank scenarios, the uncertainty around Michel Vorm’s availability imposes an ill-timed tactical restriction on Fantasy Managers. But with strong candidates abounding in defence and midfield, we run the rule over the surviving runners and riders from the Swansea ranks as another Double Gameweek deadline approaches.

The Prospects

The insolent gung ho of Swansea’s early outings this season seems to have given way to a more pragmatic approach of late. The best away defensive record in the league has kept Fantasy Managers in business whilst the headline hogs have stumbled over an itinerant schedule. Failing to find the net in their last three away games, investors in the Swans’ attack can still repose hope in their form at the Liberty, where they average over two goals a game since Christmas.

QPR are hardly sitting ducks: Harry Redknapp’s rejuvenated charges have been in formidable defensive nick this year, shipping just one goal in their last five games. Yet with personnel changes imposed at the back for the Hoops through defection and injury, Swansea’s fluent forays will doubtless test the cohesion of the replacement draft.

Liverpool have been imperious at Anfield of late: flinging twelve goals past Fulham, Norwich and Sunderland without reply. But with European commitments on the cards midweek for the Reds, the Swans might be fortunate enough to face a weakened, or at least, slightly fatigued eleven come next Sunday.

The Likely Lads

The points may have dried up in recent weeks for Michu, but the chances certainly haven’t. In spite of a seven game goalless run the Spanish sensation still tops the ownership charts on 49%, and those brave or foolish enough to forgo his services run the risk of being precipitated headlong down the rankings when he locates his shooting boots. Marouane Fellaini’s brace last weekend after a similarly barren spell furnished a valuable, some might say painful, reminder of the value of patience in Fantasy football – and whether leading the line or tucked in the hole, Michu will have no shortage of backers come Saturday. Currently priced at 8.4 in FPL (5.5 in Sky Sports) and languishing a distant fourth in this week’s captaincy poll, Fantasy Managers have the rare opportunity to make the most widely owned player in the game a differential captain in a double Gameweek.

Having spent most of the season deeper than Wittgenstein and scratching out an honest dollar from the Swansea set plays, a couple of elegant open play strikes in recent weeks have showcased Jonathan De Guzman’s capacity to make merry in more advanced positions. With Leon Britton partnering Ki Sung-Yueng in the double pivot last weekend at West Ham, De Guzman was pushed forward in support of Michu – and although the experiment was terminated after an hour by the introduction of Luke Moore, it seems likely that De Guzman will be given leave to weigh anchor whenever Michu is called upon to lead the line. Priced at 5.9 in FPL (4.7 in Sky Sports), owners of the Dutch international will have dead-balls to fall back on irrespective of his open play position.

Grabbing the baton from the unfortunate Neil Taylor in Gameweek 2, and wrecking the FPL pricing curve for the Swansea defence in the process, recent watchlistee Ben Davies has been the default Swans back-line pick around these parts for many months. His tidy finish against Stoke having advertised his merits to a wider audience, the young left back is now tipping the scales at 4.6 (3.6 in Sky Sports) – a sum perhaps more consummate with the dignity of his office. Still the cheapest option on show, and with more attacking points garnered than the rest of the Swansea defence combined, Fantasy Managers are hardly overwhelmed with incentives to broaden their horizons.

That said, Angel Rangel wangles his way into the reckoning from the right. With fullbacks given license to roam in the Swansea system, the high ground is very much down the flanks in defence. Although destitute of attacking returns since Gameweek 2, Rangel versus Davies on the members’ comparison tool makes for interesting reading, and with a current price of 4.7 in FPL (5.7 in Sky Sports), just 0.1 more than Davies, the Spaniard makes a good case for consideration.

Cheeky Punt

Michu and De Guzman aside, the Swansea attack boasts more punts than an Inspector Morse box set. Wayne Routledge, Nathan Dyer and Pablo Hernandez are tussling for the two wide midfield slots, whilst Itay Shechter and Luke Moore are fighting what seems a mutually losing battle for the lone spot up top. Starting the last six and notching two assists over that spell, Pablo Hernandez is the most credible contender from the midfield melee. But only making it past the 72 minute mark twice in those six games and costing the same as De Guzman, a midrange 5.9 in FPL (6.5 in Sky Sports), the case for Hernandez might blush in the face of rigourous inquiry.

      Fluctuation may refer to:
Quantum fluctuation arising from the uncertainty principle
Primordial fluctuations, density variations in the early universe
Universal conductance fluctuations, a quantum physics phenomenon encountered in electrical transport experiments in mesoscopic species
Statistical fluctuations, very important in statistics, statistical mechanics, and thermodynamics

        NTI = Net transfers in.
When NTI in a GW reaches a certain number that night the price will go up 0.1 or down 0.1 and NTI resets to 0.
Each GW a max rise of 0.3 or fall of 0.3 from the price at the start of the GW is possible.

Every night, FPL do the price changes. Any player who has had X number of transfers IN since their last price change has their price raised by £0.1m, up to a maximum of £0.3m per week. Ditto for price drops.

The FISO website uses the data from the player list on the FPL transfers page to try to predict how close each player is to price rise or fall. It is generally very accurate.

go onto it each night and monitor your players, it is colour coded to certain rises and likely rises, if you are thinking of doing transfer then you can see if player is due to rise or drop.
therefore avoiding the dreaded 0.1 short scenario

Predicting over a whole week is a bit harder. You need to get a feel for the site and the patterns of transfers.

The column on the right tells you how many transfers each player has had today. From that and the column to the left of that (the target) you can guess how long it will take for their price to change. From that you can make a guess whether they will change 0.1, 0.2 or 0.3 by the end of the week.

No worries. One little thing about the FISO website that is confusing. When a player's price changes, their NTI (Net Transfers In) is reset to zero. This has the effect of looking like very big 'NTI Today' column. So if you see an unexpectedly big negative 'NTI Today' (like Sturridge right now) then it is probably because their price changed last night.

In this discussion regarding GW29: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/02/05/scouting-the-doubles-liverpool-5/comment-page-4/#comment-5122815, someone mentioned that it might not be possible for a team in the CL to play a leage match in a midweek with CL games even if they are not playing that week. I decided to look it up, but could not find any rules on that.

However, I saw that Arsenal played Stoke on Febuary 23 in 2011, same week as the first knockout round in the CL.

This is a couple of seasons ago, so can't guarantee that it's valid for this season, but if it is, then the United game might be played midweek gw29.

As always, it depends on your league situation and what other players you have compared to your opponents.

I suppose it boils down to this question - do you think Suarez will score 4 points over 2 games more than Aguero scores in 1 game?

I think he could do, but he only got like 4 points from the first firxtures this season against swansea and west brom added together. So maybe not if he repeats that..

I think the fact he played the 90 vs City and that we have a readymade explanation for why he's "injured" makes him better than 50:50 for the West Brom game, and 97% for the Swansea game.

Indeed. Season 1 never gets reshown. Blackadder's character changes completely after Season 1, he's got a lot less Mr Bean in him from Season 2 onwards.

      2 is my favourite, but 2 ,3 & 4 are all superb.

Going with Michu as Capt although it is a difficult decision over Sturridge................still, Michu is proven and offers the chance of a clean sheet/5 point goal/on penalties. Here's something I've not seen talked about too much...

Do we think BR is taking the Europa League seriously? Is it a priority for him?

In other words, will he try to put out his best possible 11 vs. Zenit? This could be central to the appeal of certain players for the DGW. If BR picks his best 11 (including the main FPL targets such as Enrique, who is building up match fitness, GJ, Gerrard and Suarez), this would mean that these players would have to play vs. West Brom on Monday, travel to Russia, play a game, travel back in time for the Swansea game 3 days later in order to be the DGW prospect we'd hoped.

If he does see these two game as game where he can rest some of his best players in order to field his best 11 vs. Zenit, we could be in trouble. His recent comments regarding the second string would say to me that he's not considering them for the Zenit game.

    Thoughts?

In a year of transition I think his focus should be on the PL, particularly with "easy" games against West Brom and Swansea. European ventures can wait until he has a team more established in his mould.

I think it's close between him and Suarez as I think he could realistically play 240 mins plus over three games, but I expect Gerrard to play maximum 180 mins of those three games.

Hard to tell from previous games. Away to Udinese and Anzhi were fairly strong squads but not absolute strength. Home against Young Boys and Anzhi had a fair few second stringers.

well my starting team wasn't great, but I do still have my main wildcard, in the hope of a repeat of GW36 last year (normally my wc is gone by GW10 as well). But this has also been reflected by the number of transfers I have made.

To be honest, if not using it early means taking a few hits early on, what's the difference in taking a few hits in the later DGW, by playing that wildcard early?

Reluctant to field 4 Liv/swa outfield players when I have Bertrand and Guthrie in my team.

    Sturridge, michu, Davies (and reina)

No free transfers left. But by bringing in another (for a hit this week), I'll have to take a hit next week to field 11.

    Stick with what I've got?
