We wondered if West Ham could stop Gareth Bale – with just minutes left on the clock, Tottenham’s mercurial talent provided the emphatic answer. A majestic strike won a frantic London derby at Upton Park, lifting Bale well into the realms of “essential” status in Fantasy terms. Here’s the Stock Check on Monday’s events…

On the Up

Gareth Bale
We’re running short on superlatives. Bale’s performance was again, incredible. Pace, power and menace throughout, capped with a winning goal that was simply sublime. Two goals tonight took him to six in his last four league matches as his form just remains unshakable and unstoppable. Having seen a 0.3 increase prior to this Gameweek, another huge rise in ownership looks inevitable.

Michael Dawson
An eighth successive league start for Dawson surely underlines his importance to the Spurs defence. While Andre Villas-Boas continues to rotate two spots in his back four, Dawson and Kyle Walker look assured of starts and, with a 4.6 price tag, Dawson looks a worthy acquisition. Sadly however, as we featured in this week’s “Frisking”, the schedule is very much against Spurs, in defensive terms at least.

Jussi Jaaskelainen
West Ham’s stopper was unfortunate to be on the losing side having put in an incredible shift between the sticks. With 10 saves to his name, Jaaskelainen was inspired but was finally beaten by Bale’s moment of brilliance.

Guy Demel
Back in the starting lineup, Fantasy managers will be thankful for his return with starters and points at a premium in the Gameweek. Having been replaced on 71 minutes, it’s unclear whether Demel’s selection at right-back was partly to help counter the threat of Bale. With Emmanuel Pogatetz and fit again George McCartney both contenders to return to left-back, Joey O’Brien could shift to the right once again come the Gameweek 28 trip to Stoke.

Going Down

Kevin Nolan
There had been recent signs that Nolan was returning as a force, particularly with Andy Carroll fit and back leading the line. Forced off with an injury on 35 minutes, however, Nolan’s night came to a premature end as his season continues to stutter following an encouraging opening to the campaign.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I went back to the page I was on in the rankings before the GW started only to find Aatish had fallen with a red arrow to a new page.

It just goes to show...you can always count on Aatish.

    Goodnight Aatish!

What's going on with Fletcher? Him and Graham both playing doesn't sound good for his FPL prospects.

Honestly reckon captaincy decision will follow same trend as last GW. Bale scores twice brilliantly, becomes automatic captain choice on boards after game, then the passage of time whittles down his captainers until it's a differential at the deadline. There'll be literally thousands of people waking up on Saturday morning, looking at BALE [C] ARS (H), grimacing and switching it to a more obvious choice.

    Buggumark this 😉

      Wise words.

Can't think of any Arsenal player who can be given the task to mark him out of the game. Ramsey?

Chances of a goal fest are very high me thinks.

Can't think of anyone either. The most important thing is to force him wide where he does the least damage like United did. A combination of Diaby and Monreal on the right is our best hope, Jones and Rafael stylee.

Think Monreal could do a good job against him, should get forward with caution though. Bale's newly found right foot is somewhat annoying.

The way I see it we have a week to weigh all the variables and make an informed decision. Any last minute decision to go against that is the wrong decision. I'm a man of science. Intuition is bullocks 😉

I completely agree, I genuinely fall into the trap of justifying last minute decisions because I believe decisions get better with more time and information so I wait until the last possible minute to commit, seeking to maximize both. Unfortunately, psychological terror is a helluva drug 😆 😆

Right, am 70% sure my 3 week punt on Van Persie will be terminated after just 40 minutes of football. Sorry lads, you can blame me for the injury jinx.

Am liking the look of Sturridge as his replacement to slot in alongside Anichebe, then becoming my 3rd striker after this GW (Everton's fixtures look tougher after Reading). Aguero nailed on in the other striker spot despite his lacklustre returns.

Ideally need another striker to find some form (and a game) next week to shake things up a bit.

    Night all.

Tempted to go with Cabaye over Sissoko, their price will be the same soon. Cabayes returns since he has come back are impressive, plus he is on pens and some set pieces. What do people think?

Sissoko is OOP and Cabaye is a CDM and will depend heavily on set pieces for pts. Get Sissoko

Interesting. Once HBA returns it'll be a 3-way option, like Chelsea but with a better striker ;). Went for Sissoko myself but he coulod be a good differential.

HBA won't affect Sissoko. He will replace Jonas or Gouffran. With Ba gone Pardew needs a big target man up top since they play long balls all day. Sissoko is like Fellaini, great buy.

      I'd go with Sissoko.

Cabaye is playing in the double pivot so much deeper than Sissoko but has some free kicks and corners. Watch out with the penalty situation, when HBA's back he may well take them.

His returns have been good, but other than his pen, his others have been great strikes from outside the box, surely he can't keep doing that!?

Gutierrez? (I'm guessing). Pardew was talking up a 4-2-3-1 recently with Sissoko in the hole, HBA left and ?Cabaye? right. I'm assuming he's not a serial dissembler like Fergie and if he's got the players he should go for it.

Virus set him back a little so missed Southampton, Pardew said somewhere that he could make the bench for Swansea. Think he'll be edged back after we brought him back to early and crocked him again earlier in the season.

I'd like to see him replace Gutierrez but I can't really see Pardew going for that. Likely to be Gouffran who misses out when everyone's fit, although he's done really well so far. If Cisse doesn't find some consistent form, he could be benched with Gouffran up top.

Have seen this floated once or twice already. Cabaye's returns have been impressive since his return but he does not get pens and set pieces in addition to these. He has those returns in part BECAUSE he is on pens + set pieces. Sissoko has outscored him despite not being on pens +set pieces. If that makes any sense?

Can you imagine if Bale went to Barca?

They'd field him at Left Back over Jordi Alba, and that would be just scary.

Barcelona don't need defensive full backs because of their sheer dominance, and with Bale and Alves overlapping, that would be just lethal.

Plus Alba's pretty awesome as well imo, so they wouldn't really want to drop him.
