Reading have this afternoon announced the departure of Brian McDermott following the 2-1 home defeat to Villa at the weekend. Reading have issued a statement on their site, in which they emphasise their keenness to appoint a replacement with some haste…

“The search for a successor will start immediately and it is hoped that a new Manager will be in place as soon as possible to lead the fight against potential relegation.”

Reading face a daunting trip to Man United this weekend and it remains to be seen if Russian owner Anton Zingarevich has a name lined up to take control in time for that particular visit. Paulo Di Canio and Nigel Adkins are two names currently occupying the bookies thinking.

While McDermott’s departure is perhaps harsh on a manager who gained them promotion and has battled this term with limited resources, Fantasy Managers will be quick to move on and we must now consider that Reading’s starting XI will be in flux from this point. McDermott had appeared to have settled on his preferred lineup and, until recently, had employed a 4-5-1 system with some regularity.

An upturn in fortunes will be anticipated, such is the expected effect of a new manager’s arrival and it’s also likely that we’ll see a shake-up in personnel. The back four, recognised as the worst in the Premier League on current form, is surely likely to see changes.

We may now see the likes of Sean Morrison, Danny Guthrie and Adam Le Fondre earn regular starts under a new regime and, with the potential for improved results, there could yet be value available in the Royals’ squad over the remaining Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I can't see that it makes any odds which championship players fill in the back 4 births of a sinking ship.

Training them to be more organised once they lose possession of the ball.

i.e. when to press a high line and when to drop back on mass is surely the only way such a shoddy bunch have any small hope of avoiding finding their real level.

Right I am an Everton fan who lives in reading and has a season ticket there.

It is about time McDermott went.

IMO this will be the team that will play now:

    Federici (when fit)

    Kelly Pearce Marriapa Shorey

    McClearly Akpan Guthrie Mcanuff

    Kebe
THE STRIKER COULD BE ANYONE'S GUESS

I read that lineup and I say 'they're going down'. Is there a player in that group that starts for any other Prem side? Seriously ? Not McDermott's fault, it's the ownership/club management.

sadly i have to agree with you.

The only hope thay have is that they keep the spirit shown in previous games, especially earlier in the season.

Its all or nothing now - they will throw the kitchen sink at teams now and i hope they do stay up because they r one of the few teams not built around money in the prem.

I thought Blackman was a credible sub this weekend. He snatched at a couple chances but I wonder why he hasn't been given more looks in the squad. Not like Pog's was killing out there.

Personally, I can't see anyone preventing a beating at OT. My bet is the new manager won't be in control until after the weekend but in the stands - would be a brave man to take control for that one. Imagine starting your tenure with a thrashing.

Alright I'm a bit harsh on McDermott in a personal sense, I think he's a very decent bloke, just tinkers inexplicably with a team whose best first eleven would struggle to stay up.

There's often a new manager effect where the players temporarily improve - it lasts a month or so.

If people don't like your sense of humour, try posting an opinion about football.

To be honest, I don't think McDermott ever really knew his best team. So much tinkering seemed to have such a negative effect on the team. Especially regarding his defence, so many changes in the back 4, especially for a promoted team, can never be a good thing.

You might find that it wasn't so hard, after all.

The defender FPL page says it all:

      Harte RDG 4.0 45
      Mariappa RDG 3.9 39
      Shorey RDG 3.9 39
      Morrison RDG 3.8 35
      Pearce RDG 3.8 35
      Gorkss RDG 3.7 32
      Gunter RDG 3.8 31

7 players on roughly the same caps, no one above their starting price.

Too long, didn't read, Kaspar Gorkss.

He didn't know his best team because he has a lot of really poor players vis-a-vis the other Prem teams. With no consistent producers you've got to chop and change to see if someone else is up to the job.

I feel sorry for McDermott too. There are ridiculous sackings these days.

The first Oxford match I went to featured McDermott on the wing. He didn't play that many matches for Oxford, but I've always looked out for him since.

"Ridiculous sacking" is a harsh term for a manager of a team facing relegation.

if you look at their team it's not a premier league team. he should have signed better players. not championship standard players.

To be fair I think their strategy was not to spend, take the Prem profits and come back stronger if they're relegated. I do think he tinkered way too much though.

As someone said above, teams usually get a short term boost when a mangers goes..galvanised, all sticking together, playing for their places, their careers, etc. could go either way.
