Reading have this afternoon announced the departure of Brian McDermott following the 2-1 home defeat to Villa at the weekend. Reading have issued a statement on their site, in which they emphasise their keenness to appoint a replacement with some haste…

“The search for a successor will start immediately and it is hoped that a new Manager will be in place as soon as possible to lead the fight against potential relegation.”

Reading face a daunting trip to Man United this weekend and it remains to be seen if Russian owner Anton Zingarevich has a name lined up to take control in time for that particular visit. Paulo Di Canio and Nigel Adkins are two names currently occupying the bookies thinking.

While McDermott’s departure is perhaps harsh on a manager who gained them promotion and has battled this term with limited resources, Fantasy Managers will be quick to move on and we must now consider that Reading’s starting XI will be in flux from this point. McDermott had appeared to have settled on his preferred lineup and, until recently, had employed a 4-5-1 system with some regularity.

An upturn in fortunes will be anticipated, such is the expected effect of a new manager’s arrival and it’s also likely that we’ll see a shake-up in personnel. The back four, recognised as the worst in the Premier League on current form, is surely likely to see changes.

We may now see the likes of Sean Morrison, Danny Guthrie and Adam Le Fondre earn regular starts under a new regime and, with the potential for improved results, there could yet be value available in the Royals’ squad over the remaining Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

This sacking is pretty justified, compared to Adkins.

Is it? You think it was his choice to have such a rubbish squad? I dont think anyone could have kept them up

Thats not the point - I'm just saying in comparison it is pretty justified. Neither manager had a great squad, but one of them is undeniably a better coach, manager and motivator.

^This, Reading never intended to stay in the premiership. The sacking was just the boards way of distancing itself from responsibility for the shambles that is Reading FC. Not since Derby County can I remember such a piss poor organised outfit in the Premiership.

No-one REALLY depends on staying up first time round though. But they will attract a better manager now than they will AFTER they go down.

I agree - they don't have the resources within their squad to be anything other than prime relegation candidates.

They are appalling. But the kind of team you should be able to galvanise - if you can't get that gigantic russian to score, you may as well go home.

The Board didn't invest in the playing squad, they were always going to go down. Not really McDermott's fault.

I see it as quite similar to Adkins. Reading are a quite unlikely top flight club (look at their history), and he got them there. Southampton one almost expects to be in the top flight.

Adkins was very harsh too, mind.

Reading players will be back on trial against United and as often the case when a manager gets sacked, will up their performance to impress whoever is likely to be the replacement.

If anything I'd expect it to be a harder game for United, not easier.

I'd see the QPR game as a precedent, when Hughes was sacked they traveled to United the next game. Harry wasn't even in charge for that game and they played out a surprisingly good counter-attacking performance against United. I think they scored first in a hard fought 3-1 loss.

He has had bad resources, but the fact is he got them promotion and has been charged with keeping them there. It's clear that with him they won't do it, so why not try and change their fortunes. They have been, by some margin, the worst team defensively in the league and in my opinion, they should of done better.

Never liked the man anyway, dull and uninspiring.

    Remember terry connor?

Connor took charge with Wolves in 18th place, one of five teams at the foot of the table looking to avoid the three relegation places. His first game in charge brought a 2–2 draw at Newcastle United on 25 February 2012.[13] However, his side then suffered seven consecutive defeats which left them rooted to the bottom of the table and were relegated on 22 April after a 0–2 defeat to Manchester City.[14] In his thirteen games, he failed to achieve any wins and gained only four points from a possible 39. The team finished bottom of the table with one of the lowest points tallies in their history (25).

For a long time i was set on RvP and thought he was the ONLY option. Now however I've come to believe that Rooney is a better one, and here's why

    1) Compare the 2 in the last 6 GWs (i.e since Rooney came back from injury). Rooney has better stats and more points than RvP. It has been noted that RvP's PPG drops significantly when Rooney plays

    2) Rooney, although he has lost pens still has great points potential he is still getting into great positions and he will want to try and get as close to RvP for goals as he can. I'm aware RvP is chasing the golden boot, but he isn't finishing as well as he was earlier in the season.

    3) Lastly and most importantly. It the opinion of myself, the guys I sit with at OT and the guys I work with, who all watch United on a regular basis that RvP is knackered. Not in a Torres 'he's finished' sense but in a 'he needs a good rest' sense. To a certain degree due to injuries to Rooney, Kagawa and our wingers (often forcing us to play Rooney or Kagawa there) RvP has been carrying the bulk of the forward work for most of the season, and much as it did towards the end of last season with Arsenal it has caught up with him. By contrast Rooney is fresh, hungry and has a point to prove.

      is rooney 100% match fit?

      3) is a strong argument. seeing them play live makes a difference, however RVP isn't necessarily about his work rate. it's more of a berbatov quality thing. plus he's on pens...

The problem is that RVP is now the main man, the number one striker. Rooney's role is now to rotate with Hernandez, Welbeck and Kagawa. When he does play, this could be in a variety of roles: on the wing, head of a midfield diamond, or even up front.

Now this is true, Rooney does rotate position a lot. But it's true RVP does as well. He plays as a support striker for much of the game, his assists are testament to that.

Quality overview of both players, I was undecided now I'm all for Rooney and with some extra cash too spend in the midfield... Thanks for the post fella

Good analysis, nice hearing from someone who's watched him in the flesh.

Interesting stat I just saw, Via Opta:

5% - Robin van Persie's conversion rate in his past nine games (all comps), compared to 27% in the 28 games before that. Slump.

That stat actually reassures me about RVP a little bit. Conversion rate is usually pretty luck based, so if he keeps getting opportunities, chances are he'll start converting them.

Another thing that puts me slightly in the RVP camp, besides the penalties, is that over the whole season 74% of RVP's shots have come inside the box vs only 54% for Rooney.

possibly....but van Persie is world class and Rooney, well he's a poor substitute for that.

I think RVP's fixture supercedes his form.

Additionally, it would be incredibly risky to go without given his captaincy and penalty duties.

Earlier in the season, especially with the happy accident of Rooney being out for much of it, I would begrudge him the title of essential - seems pretty different now.

I would really like Rooney in for Lambert this week but it will leave me with a serious benching dilemma. Is it worth transferring in Rooney for a -4 hit and benching one of Michu or Sissoko?

    Mignolet
    Evans Zabaleta Davies
Michu Sissoko Mata Walcott Bale (C)
    Suarez (V) Benteke

That's why I did the slightly sideways move of sturridge to suarez yesterday. I have 5m burning a hole in my pocket which will be sued to either get RVP or Rooney in for Lambert at some stage.

What are people's opinions on Tevez as a FPL candidate at this point?

Very cheap considering his potential, 3 goals and an assist in his last 3 games (albeit including his FA cup romp against barnsley) and DGW coverage for Man City.

The only issue is, and a pretty big issue, is his rotation risk at the moment. Worth that risk?

If you are going to sneak off for a cheeky FIFA match against Barcelona, be sure to turn the difficulty down from Legendary, as to avoid being absolutely Forca'd.

Norwich aren't as good away from home, and Lukaku against Stoke at home, though Stoke are conceding, I'd still be wary.

And about No United attacker, well, I can do Baines to Martin and Lukaku to Rooney.. But can backfire pretty bad too.

Lukaku is a monster and Stoke aren't that solid at the back, I trust him a lot more than Sess at home to a somewhat rejuvenated QPR team.

Guys further to what I wrote above, another though occured to me whilst i was in the shower 😯

There is no chance of Rooney being rested. Back on the Horse asked if Rooney is 100% match fit? The answer is probably not. But he's not gonna get match fit from the bench. Fergie has stated he needs games, he will start v Reading

In addition Fergie has also lamented that he hasn't given Hernandez enough opportunities. Given that GW31 will either be a trip to Sunderland or the Chelsea replay, for which Fergie may want a fully fit and rested RvP added to the fact that Huntelaar's injury means RvP is pretty much nailed on to start both games for Holland means that a Hernandez start is not beyond the realms of possibility. Of course we thought this v Norwich and we trolled by Fergie, but could be that have been down to a need to test RvP's hip ahead of the Madrid after the QPR camera incident?

Nice case. You can never predict if RVP will start or not, but I'd say there is a case for him being rested, especially if he is knackered as you say he is.

Fergie may think that Kagawa should play in hole behind van Persie as he's a fitter more versatile player.

I hope not, as I have van Persie and rooney. but it wouldn't be bonkers!

Talk about a nasty one. Cisse seems to be finally getting his shooting boots back on and is away at the incredibly leaky (doubly so at home) Wigan. If you had to - Benteke.

Villa are so unpredictable - they seem to either play a horrible long ball game or attractive stuff on the floor. Benteke does have insane goal involvement for them though - better than Cisse for sure.

That might change if Cisse continues to improve. His shooting of late has been transformed.

yes spot on Isacki... i also have the feeling with Cissé there is a higher risk and a higher chance of reward, probably gonna stick with Cissé but i think i'll wait untill Thursday evening if i can...
