With Gameweek 29 behind us, we pay homage to Villa’s talismanic Belgian, acknowledge the resurgence in form down Loftus Road way and contemplate investment nearer the bottom of the table as the battle for survival heats up:

The Player

The six-fixture headache that was Gameweek 29 forced Fantasy managers into somewhat reassessing our options, with a handful of targets receiving increased interest prior to Saturday’s deadline. Despite back-to-back blanks in his previous couple of matches against Arsenal and City, Christian Benteke was drafted in by over 62,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers – his second highest haul of investors this season.

In a crucial away clash against fellow-strugglers Reading, the bustling Belgian rose to the occasion. Benteke grabbed Villa’s equaliser and also collected a couple of bonus points in the 2-1 win as Paul Lambert’s troops moved three points clear of the drop zone with nine games to go. If Benteke can replicate his returns from the previous nine, Villa have plenty cause for optimism – he’s averaged 6.1 points per game between Gameweeks 21-29, thanks to seven goals, an assist and 10 bonus points.

Indeed, with 12 strikes and four assists to his name, he has played a part in 16 of the 24 goals (or two-thirds) Lambert’s side have notched when he’s been on the pitch – a ratio superior to any other regular frontman and an overall contribution that could ultimately prove the difference between top-flight football and a drop to the Championship for the midlands outfit.

With form firmly on his side, Benteke also has the fixtures to maintain his rise up the Fantasy rankings. Next up is a run of three home games in four – QPR, Liverpool and Fulham all pay visit to Villa Park and with spot-kick duties also boosting his appeal, Benteke has already been picked up by over 9,000 FPL managers this week – the bandwagon continues to roll along relentlessly, reduced fixture list or not.

The Team

A 2-1 win at Southampton in the previous Gameweek was perhaps a signal of intent. Saturday saw Harry Redknapp’s side triumph in another proverbial six-pointer, this time seeing off Sunderland at Loftus Road to register back-to-back victories for the first time this term. Suddenly, the situation doesn’t seem quite so ominous for the R’s, as they move to within four points of safety – intriguingly, this upturn in form has coincided with the omission of Adel Taarabt from the starting XI.

Dropped for the first time since Gameweek 7, the Moroccan, according to Harry Redknapp, “suddenly wasn’t fit” for the Black Cats showdown, allowing Junior Hoilett to continue his impressive showings on the left. The former Blackburn man has now supplied an assist in each of his two appearances since stepping in for Taarabt, though he wasn’t the only one to provide a crucial contribution. Bobby Zamora’s recovery from ankle and hip injuries was key, allowing Redknapp to field a front two and pair the former Fulham man with Loic Remy – with Zamora leading the line, the Frenchman buzzed around up top and fired home his third goal in four starts since arriving at Loftus Road in January. Andros Townsend was the star performer, though, supplying a goal and pair of assists in his third start in four since arriving on loan from Spurs – dropped last week as Redknapp went 4-3-3 and fielded Remy on the right, he looks to have cemented his first-team berth with a stunning display.

Clearly, for all his side’s recent resilience, Redknapp’s troops won’t escape the drop by simply grinding out draws. Incredibly, QPR had scored just four times in 10 matches prior to Gameweek 28 – with five goals in their last two, a change in approach has reaped reward as their manager acknowledged post-match:

“That’s the best I’ve seen us playing going forward. We played 4-2-4 and went for it and I knew we would either win or get turned over because we were so open. We just have to keep being positive…we’ve given ourselves a chance.”

The next three fixtures could well afford the R’s to build their new-found momentum. Trips to Villa and Fulham are followed by a home clash against Wigan and with Redknapp keen to maintain a more offensive approach, his side will be confident of producing the goods against three of the worst defences in the top-flight as they look for goals to seal their survival.

The Talking Point

With Villa and QPR rising to the occasion last weekend, it serves a reminder of the potential on offer nearer the foot of the table as the scrap for survival intensifies. To an extent, the reduced Gameweek schedule forced us to change tactics and focus on the likes of Benteke and Remy but as Wigan demonstrated around this time last season, the battle to beat the drop can inspire relegation candidates to produce a level of returns way above their Fantasy price tag. Victor Moses was instrumental in helping the Latics escape the relegation trapdoor last time out, with a series of devastating displays in the final two months of the 2011/12 season making a mockery of his initial 5.0 price tag.

As the table begins to settle, certain teams will perhaps start to lose their edge and fall into the comfort zone – with a Capital One Cup in the locker and 40 points already on the board, Swansea, for example, have less reason to battle to the very last in every league match now. Having scored in one of his last nine, Michu’s owners may decide now is the time to look around for a replacement – certainly, with an ownership in excess of 50%, shedding the Spaniard may have increased appeal for those willing or needing to take chances.

Similarly, 30% owned Marouane Fellaini has dropped in performance; scoring in just two of his last 10 appearances, the Everton man is another with no more than pride to play for from here on in, though a double Gameweek 33 will no doubt boost his potential, providing he can avoid another booking before then. Newcastle’s recent displays, on the other hand, highlight what’s on offer when survival is on the line. An influx of January signings, with Moussa Sissoko registering returns on five of six appearances, has been instrumental in their about-turn in form – the Magpies have climbed the table thanks to three back-to-back home victories but with 33 points still only on the board, they have plenty still to play for.

In addition to fluctuating form, rest and rotation is also a real key factor now. Again, Swansea are a good example here – while Michu struggles to maintain his early-season form, it’s Luke Moore who has risen to prominence. He has scored both of his side’s last couple of goals after being handed a rare opportunity to impress, with the Spaniard shifted from lone forward to “the hole” in the last couple of fixtures. While Laudrup has the luxury of trying out different attacking variations, the likes of Benteke, Remy, Sunderland’s Steven Fletcher, Southampton’s Rickie Lambert and Wigan’s Arouna Kone can be pretty much guaranteed 90 minutes week in, week out between now and the end of the season.

The same is now likely to apply to Adam Le Fondre in light of Brian McDermott’s dismissal at Reading. Despite scoring 10 times – double the tally of any Royals player – Le Fondre was utilised mainly as a sub due to McDermott’s penchant for 4-4-1-1 with a target man leading the line. The Russian’s recent three-match suspension has allowed Le Fondre a first-team return and, while he has failed to notch in his two starts, his eye for goal may prove decisive over the closing Gameweeks.

Although Fantasy faith in the likes of Robin Van Persie, Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale is as resolute as ever, last weekend’s returns illustrated there is scope to widen our nets and look beyond the popular picks. As Harry Redknapp himself has shown, playing it safe at this point in the season is likely to end in disappointment; with top-flight safety on the line, the need to go for goals is already serving us up some intriguing differentials with the potential to turn many a mini league on its head.

No not at all. It's hard to read a sentence when you miss out half the letters. You make people work harder to read your question than if you spelled it all properly.

If you're asking for a favour then you should make it as easy as possible for other people to read your question. It's just courtesy.

    Afternoon guys, some quick thoughts on the below transfer would be very appreciated, unfortunately I cant wait to see when the blank/DGW will be confirmed as Lambert's price will probably drop and I've only got enough for this;

    Felliani & Lambert to Coutinho & Rooney for a 4pt hit, leaving me with;

    Coutinho Sissoko Walcott Bale (NZogbia)
    RVP Rooney Suarez

    Thoughts?

Sorry, forgot my reasoning with Coutinho, looking to make up between 15-60pts on some rivals and none have him, just trying to cover some more liverpool attacking options. Probably could fish a better mid for 6.7, or drop NZog for a 5mil, but not convinced that Fell isn't gonna get another yellow soon so i should probably ship now

I would wait on the news and get Maloney over Coutinho. Coutinho seems like he's the rich man's Sterling from early this year; without Sterling's super budget price I don't think it's worth it, especially when you already have another rotation risk in Nzog. Rooney+RVP is mouthwatering though.

Long post alert on RVP vs Rooney discussion.

Seen a bit of debate on the RVP vs Rooney choice for the remaining of the season and figured I'd weigh in with my 2 cents.

I've divided my thoughts based on the stats into two portions, general overall stats for big picture context and stats relevant to final 9 games imo.

Overall; RVP has played 85% of total mins possible while Rooney has played only 57%. Whether due to rest/bench/injuries.

In this time RVP averages 4 shots per 90 vs Rooney 4.3 but RVP is more accurate with 45% of total shots being on target vs Rooney 40% and also has a better conversion rate to goals, 43% vs 38%. Rooney created 2.3 chances per 90 vs RVP 2 with both averaging aprox. 1 assist every 2 games. Overall, RVP has averaged 7.77 per 90 vs Rooney 7.14 (bps included). So basically, Rooney shoots more but RVP is generally more efficient to the extent that he has produced more with fewer opportunities.

Now to me, in considering who to pick for the final 9 games, you have to look at the stats assuming both will be available and play the full 9 games. If you think that either will get more minutes than the other for whatever reason then no need to go any further…..get the one you think will play more.

For the next 9 games I have limited the consideration of stats to the games RVP and Rooney actually were available and featured together since it is reasonable to assume the dynamics may be different when they play alone. When playing together (20 prem games) the stats swing twds Rooney ever so slightly, or I should say there is a notable decline in RVP’s.

Rooney shots per 90 is 4.3 vs RVP 3.4, while Rooney’s conversion rate of 38% beats RVP 33%. Assist potential holds consistent with both virtually with equal production in chances created. Though it must be noted that RVP takes about double the corners that Rooney takes and RVP is now on penalties. So stats can be adjusted slightly for the swing of the 2 penalty goals Rooney has had; the opportunity now being afforded to RVP.

Other slight consideratiosn are that RVP has had a goal erroneously disallowed (replays showed it crossed the line), plus an assist erroneously not awarded (when his rebounded shot was scored by Young and the linesman incorrectly gave Young offside), RVP has also wasted 5 big chances vs Rooney’s 1, meaning that RVP could have easily had a handful more goals. Factor these things plus the intangible that is - going for the golden boot, and we can reasonably assume that they can make up for any prior statistical shortfall when considering the next 9.

My conclusion, if you have RVP, hold. If you have Rooney, hold. If funds aren’t an issue and you want a manu fwd then I recommend RVP. They have produced the same materially, but RVP has added bonus of penalties, and what I believe to be better chance of finishing with more goals should they get equal opportunities, plus the ever so slight chance of getting more mins in the run in should time played trend continues and the ownership factor - which means that a few RVP 'hauls' can be fatal at this stage with no time to recoop. However, if you can utilize the cash elsewhere to reap rewards then Rooney may also be a more than viable choice.

I still think if you aren't going to captain RVP he's a waste of money (if you can identify areas you otherwise would spend that money that is).

Well he did get rested in the Cup. And yes, it's confirmed that he does have Pens now. Just suffering from fatigue/mental tiredness is all! Fancy him to get back to goalscoring ways this weekend

I ditched RVP for Rooney earlier in the season and was scared for RVP exploding at all times... it was horrible watching United. Now i have RVP, i'm not anywhere near as concerned about Rooney outperforming at all. That says it all to me.

Apologies for divulging any info that I shouldnt have. I think where you stand in your leagues is also critical, if you are chasing then you would be more inclined to go Rooney and try to use the funds to an advantage elsewhere. But most are at a stage where they can afford either premium fwd and still have all the key players for the run in, and if that is the case or you are just cruising home due to a massive mini league lead then I suggest get RVP almost solely on ownership percentage. A 50% owned player with extremely high captaincy percentage will be fatal if he does get a few hauls with limited time left to recoop. While a few Rooney hauls wont have the same effect.

Hmmm... you really are swaying me towards RVP now. I am 100+ points ahead in my mini league but am looking to finish as high as possible in the overall rankings. Rooney gives me more options, RVP gives me peace of mind.

Im in a similar situation. 477 rank and although I agree Rooney will provide more options and help a possible top 100 finish (probably wishful thinking but hey) I'm not sure I'm willing to ditch RVP. If Rooney looks irresistable this weekend I may go for him, alongside RVP and Suarez.

Can anyone explain to me how the mechanism works for Current price/Selling Price/Purchase Price?

Lets take the example with Lambert

    Purchase price: 6,5
    Current price: 7,3
    Selling price: 6,9

If he drops to 7,2 - Will the SP still be 6,9? How much does he have to drop until the selling price drops, etc?

You only get 50% of the profit (rounded down). For every 0.2 he rises, you get 0.1 on the selling price. If he drops to 7.2, you'll get 6.8.

You get 50% of any gains (and 100% of any losses!)

In other words you've so far gained 0.8 (7.3-6.5) so you get 50% of that which is 0.4 hence your selling price of 6.9.

If he drops to 7.2 the gain becomes 0.7 (7.2-6.5). 50% of that is 0.35 but they round down the fractions so you get 0.3 and your selling price drops to 6.8.

(Displaying the maths for Berbilly's benefit 🙂 )

Didn't realise how close to RVP Suarez had got.

However, Evra was the top scoring the defender last year but was barely worth owning. If you can get your timing right it may not be necessary to own the top scoring player. Squad game innit,

The conclusion of most peoples points are similar, if you have RVP hold, if you have rooney hold, I think it comes down to the following: if you HAVEN'T got one of the two, get rooney because the money spent correctly elsewhere will mean bigger points.......

I'm getting Rooney as I want Suarez, Bale, Walcott, Mata and a Man Utd forward, plus a good rest of the squad. Basically RVP for me means dropping one of Suarez, Bale, Walcott, Mata, or seriously weakening my squad.

Of course I'm not factoring in doublegameweeks and if possible I'm plannig to have both rooney and RVP for that week...could be a sensational haul with those two beauties up top.

I need a One Week Mid or Striker punt. Playing 2 crucial H2H this week and I am trying to make up a deficit of at least 10 points. Potential differentials might be Chelsea mids for H2H 1 and United attack for H2H 2

    Current Mid and Forwards

    Walcott/Michu/Sissoko/Coutinho/Bale

    lambert/RVP/Benteke

Thinking of shipping Lamb or Sissoko

Who would you recommend? Thinking of Hazard/Siggy/Kagawa(?)

With all the talk about Suarez/Sturridge and RVP/Rooney, and as a current owner of both Suarez and Sturridge, I'm interested to hear people's thoughts on "doubling up". It's something that's often mentioned - including by myself - as a negative when discussing transfers, but do you think it's really a significantly detrimental aspect?

I know it is risky to put a lot of faith in one team, but equally, surely it can also pay off extremely handsomely? Do people think it's primarily a risk when considering weaker, or more inconsistent, sides, or is there anyone who tries to avoid it altogether?

Yeah...of course it's an option, next week being a good case in point. If Reading capitulate against United then why not double up on Santi/Walcott for their home game against the same opposition and then bench one ready for the DGW after that....Sometimes it's entirely logical...All you have in this game is eleven pegs on a board pooled from a squad of fifteen pegs...It matters not a jot what those pegs are in real life just how many points they might potentialy accumulate...

Do it before 2:15am if you can risk the price change. Everyday, it changes at 2:17am.

    Which to do?

    A) Le Fondre - Sturridge
    B) Le Fondre - Tevez
    C) Lambert - Suarez
    D) Something else

I've just sold the only surviving player from GW1 in my squad, Begovic.

Meaning you guys should probably captain him this week, he'll probably get a CS, penalty save and 3 bonus.

It's usually how it happens for me.
