With Gameweek 29 behind us, we pay homage to Villa’s talismanic Belgian, acknowledge the resurgence in form down Loftus Road way and contemplate investment nearer the bottom of the table as the battle for survival heats up:

The Player

The six-fixture headache that was Gameweek 29 forced Fantasy managers into somewhat reassessing our options, with a handful of targets receiving increased interest prior to Saturday’s deadline. Despite back-to-back blanks in his previous couple of matches against Arsenal and City, Christian Benteke was drafted in by over 62,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers – his second highest haul of investors this season.

In a crucial away clash against fellow-strugglers Reading, the bustling Belgian rose to the occasion. Benteke grabbed Villa’s equaliser and also collected a couple of bonus points in the 2-1 win as Paul Lambert’s troops moved three points clear of the drop zone with nine games to go. If Benteke can replicate his returns from the previous nine, Villa have plenty cause for optimism – he’s averaged 6.1 points per game between Gameweeks 21-29, thanks to seven goals, an assist and 10 bonus points.

Indeed, with 12 strikes and four assists to his name, he has played a part in 16 of the 24 goals (or two-thirds) Lambert’s side have notched when he’s been on the pitch – a ratio superior to any other regular frontman and an overall contribution that could ultimately prove the difference between top-flight football and a drop to the Championship for the midlands outfit.

With form firmly on his side, Benteke also has the fixtures to maintain his rise up the Fantasy rankings. Next up is a run of three home games in four – QPR, Liverpool and Fulham all pay visit to Villa Park and with spot-kick duties also boosting his appeal, Benteke has already been picked up by over 9,000 FPL managers this week – the bandwagon continues to roll along relentlessly, reduced fixture list or not.

The Team

A 2-1 win at Southampton in the previous Gameweek was perhaps a signal of intent. Saturday saw Harry Redknapp’s side triumph in another proverbial six-pointer, this time seeing off Sunderland at Loftus Road to register back-to-back victories for the first time this term. Suddenly, the situation doesn’t seem quite so ominous for the R’s, as they move to within four points of safety – intriguingly, this upturn in form has coincided with the omission of Adel Taarabt from the starting XI.

Dropped for the first time since Gameweek 7, the Moroccan, according to Harry Redknapp, “suddenly wasn’t fit” for the Black Cats showdown, allowing Junior Hoilett to continue his impressive showings on the left. The former Blackburn man has now supplied an assist in each of his two appearances since stepping in for Taarabt, though he wasn’t the only one to provide a crucial contribution. Bobby Zamora’s recovery from ankle and hip injuries was key, allowing Redknapp to field a front two and pair the former Fulham man with Loic Remy – with Zamora leading the line, the Frenchman buzzed around up top and fired home his third goal in four starts since arriving at Loftus Road in January. Andros Townsend was the star performer, though, supplying a goal and pair of assists in his third start in four since arriving on loan from Spurs – dropped last week as Redknapp went 4-3-3 and fielded Remy on the right, he looks to have cemented his first-team berth with a stunning display.

Clearly, for all his side’s recent resilience, Redknapp’s troops won’t escape the drop by simply grinding out draws. Incredibly, QPR had scored just four times in 10 matches prior to Gameweek 28 – with five goals in their last two, a change in approach has reaped reward as their manager acknowledged post-match:

“That’s the best I’ve seen us playing going forward. We played 4-2-4 and went for it and I knew we would either win or get turned over because we were so open. We just have to keep being positive…we’ve given ourselves a chance.”

The next three fixtures could well afford the R’s to build their new-found momentum. Trips to Villa and Fulham are followed by a home clash against Wigan and with Redknapp keen to maintain a more offensive approach, his side will be confident of producing the goods against three of the worst defences in the top-flight as they look for goals to seal their survival.

The Talking Point

With Villa and QPR rising to the occasion last weekend, it serves a reminder of the potential on offer nearer the foot of the table as the scrap for survival intensifies. To an extent, the reduced Gameweek schedule forced us to change tactics and focus on the likes of Benteke and Remy but as Wigan demonstrated around this time last season, the battle to beat the drop can inspire relegation candidates to produce a level of returns way above their Fantasy price tag. Victor Moses was instrumental in helping the Latics escape the relegation trapdoor last time out, with a series of devastating displays in the final two months of the 2011/12 season making a mockery of his initial 5.0 price tag.

As the table begins to settle, certain teams will perhaps start to lose their edge and fall into the comfort zone – with a Capital One Cup in the locker and 40 points already on the board, Swansea, for example, have less reason to battle to the very last in every league match now. Having scored in one of his last nine, Michu’s owners may decide now is the time to look around for a replacement – certainly, with an ownership in excess of 50%, shedding the Spaniard may have increased appeal for those willing or needing to take chances.

Similarly, 30% owned Marouane Fellaini has dropped in performance; scoring in just two of his last 10 appearances, the Everton man is another with no more than pride to play for from here on in, though a double Gameweek 33 will no doubt boost his potential, providing he can avoid another booking before then. Newcastle’s recent displays, on the other hand, highlight what’s on offer when survival is on the line. An influx of January signings, with Moussa Sissoko registering returns on five of six appearances, has been instrumental in their about-turn in form – the Magpies have climbed the table thanks to three back-to-back home victories but with 33 points still only on the board, they have plenty still to play for.

In addition to fluctuating form, rest and rotation is also a real key factor now. Again, Swansea are a good example here – while Michu struggles to maintain his early-season form, it’s Luke Moore who has risen to prominence. He has scored both of his side’s last couple of goals after being handed a rare opportunity to impress, with the Spaniard shifted from lone forward to “the hole” in the last couple of fixtures. While Laudrup has the luxury of trying out different attacking variations, the likes of Benteke, Remy, Sunderland’s Steven Fletcher, Southampton’s Rickie Lambert and Wigan’s Arouna Kone can be pretty much guaranteed 90 minutes week in, week out between now and the end of the season.

The same is now likely to apply to Adam Le Fondre in light of Brian McDermott’s dismissal at Reading. Despite scoring 10 times – double the tally of any Royals player – Le Fondre was utilised mainly as a sub due to McDermott’s penchant for 4-4-1-1 with a target man leading the line. The Russian’s recent three-match suspension has allowed Le Fondre a first-team return and, while he has failed to notch in his two starts, his eye for goal may prove decisive over the closing Gameweeks.

Although Fantasy faith in the likes of Robin Van Persie, Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale is as resolute as ever, last weekend’s returns illustrated there is scope to widen our nets and look beyond the popular picks. As Harry Redknapp himself has shown, playing it safe at this point in the season is likely to end in disappointment; with top-flight safety on the line, the need to go for goals is already serving us up some intriguing differentials with the potential to turn many a mini league on its head.

I hate watching England play, unless it is in a tournament.

The games are usually pointless, or dire.

I think the only England game I've truly enjoyed watching in recent years outside of tournaments was the 'friendly' with Argentina years ago in Switzerland, when I think Owen scored a very late winner. That was a good match.

B: sturridge >> suarez (will involve a hit as i will need to downgrade cueller)..is sturridge really crap?

Ive sold mata for fellani in order to upgrade sturridge to fellani. I'm just worried about his game time in premier leauge with Chelsea's fixture congestion. I'm thinking rafa doesn't care so much if Chelsea finish in the top 4 but will be more concerned with having a shot at the FA cup or Europa leauge. These are the things I tell myse
F to try and jspustify selling mata after I purchased him for 8.9!

      B. Sturridge scored 2 out of the last 10 goals for Liverpool while he has played. Best to get Suarez before it's too late. Definitely worth the -4. Plus there's a few defenders who could be switched as well.

On another thought, you won't be able to switch to DGW defenders if you make this transfer unless you downgrade Baines or someone else from your squad. Maybe it's best to stay flexible.

Not sure what stat's you're looking at, but Suarez has scored 5 and assisted on 3 of Liverpool's last 12 goals. His returns have been 14, 17, and 12 over that span.

the exact stat you quoted, the 10 goals scored in the last 3 games sturridge played. the whole point of sturridge is he dilutes suarez, his stock is currently sky-high due to a hattrick (17) scored in the game sturridge missed, as opposed to very good 14, 12.

Hey guys, would really appreciate some help!

    Team is:

    Jaas Begovic
    Ivanovic Enrique Davies Clyne Mariappa
    Bale Mata Michu Fellaini Sissoko
    Rooney Suarez Lambert

Have 2 FT's and 0.9 in the bank.

Want to save the 2...should i keep Michu for this week or would you prefer Walcott and do the switch next week? or possibly Davies -> Boyce/Figueroa/Sharner? Thanks!!!!

Definitely just use 1 and then save to have 2 next week, nice position to be in with DGWs coming up eventually.

Maybe just take the chance to lose Mariappa this week for somebody who will have a DGW down the line?

Who are you benching, I would guess it will be Sissoko or Lambert?

Is anyone actually transferring Sturridge in over RVP at the moment?

Or are you referring to those with Sturridge in their team but no Suarez?

For the latter (me included), using a transfer now would be a waste.

Ideally I'd have kept both but due to the blank I chose to sell one. It just so happens that in the games since then, one has outscored the other, despite them scoring equally well before that.

Changing now would be chasing points.

I've been really interested in the bottom sides over the past few games and how they're all set-up. Admittedly, I haven't seen much of Villa and Reading, but I've seen a lot of Wigan and QPR throughout this season and the latter more so since Redknapp took over. He seems to have instilled a sense of belief and togetherness in the team that I honestly believe is the fulcrum of a successful football manager. Essentially, I don't think tactics matter all that much, if you have poorer players, you have to work harder and rely on luck to beat the opposition. What QPR have, strangely, is a set of poorer players who are on a larger wage budget than many teams in the league. That's a bad combination so what Redknapp has got to do is start making them believe in themselves and keep them fighting, making them difficult to beat. He's very much in the same mould as Tony Pulis but fortunately for him, has carried a greater reputation in the media for whatever reason.

All he does is sets his sides up to be well organized and tough to break down. I think that has transformed them from a mediocre side under Hughes to one that now has a good chance of survival, given the fixtures at their disposal.

Wigan, on the other hand, are a Jekyll and Hyde club in many ways; one week they can look absolutely phenomenal to the extent that you wonder why they ever get into so much trouble in the first place. The next, they look all over the shop and are absolutely atrocious. On their day, they can beat virtually any other team in the Premier League, but that day doesn't come often enough. In Maloney and McCarthy they have two very technical, attacking players to accompany Di Santo, who, naturally, should be scoring more goals. That said, I think they'll be okay again this season.

Villa look reliant on Benteke, so if he gets injured, they're staring down the barrel of a shotgun. Lambert has laid most of his eggs in one basket by seemingly disbanding the previous generation of Villa players and going almost solely with youth. Most fans prefer that, and it may be the correct approach, IF they stay up. If they don't, it could be the downfall of a club so steeped in tradition that they're one of the few English sides to have won a European Cup (I believe they were the first, but don't quote me on that) and only second to Everton in terms of the length of time they have spent in the top flight overall. That is some going but I really can't see a way back for them at this moment in time.

Thats why i went Benteke over Lukaku last week and would back mid price forwards from teams like Qpr, Wigan, Villa until the end of the season. Also helps if you have RVP in your squad as £££ is key.

QPR certainly seem to have settled down under Harry and hopefully (in FPL terms of course) we get a settled line-up and some consistency.

Benteke is as far as we need to look for Villa and I think Maloney and Kone could offer great value if Wigan can get some consistency an go on a run. Di Santo is a strange one. He has been threatening to be a good FPL target for a couple of seasons but it has never really materialised.

Unless we get an OOP defender from those side, I doubt their defences warrant much attention, with perhaps the exception of Hill from QPR as a cheap player for their relatively kind (on paper of course!) fixtures.

Decent write up, just a couple of comments on the Villa discussion. The disbanding of the previous generation was driven as much by RL's wage cap policy as Lambert's management policy. As a fan myself the player that I am most frustrated not to have seen given an opportunity is Steven Warnock (was great under MON, and has the experience that we are woefully short of at the back - has kicked on at Leeds too since he went there). Oh, and we weren;t the first English team to win the European cup by a long way (Man U, Forest & Liverpool were before us).

Oh, and my player pick from the relegation threatened team - Di Santo 🙂

I'd much rather Everton winning the Champions League than England winning the World Cup.

It's difficult to say why, as they're both rather arbitrary geographical affiliations, but I feel a connection with Everton that is absent with England.

This might be a hard question to ask but..

There are a few players that really stick out within a team in terms of talent this season.

But which player do you believe shows the most obvious superiority over his teammates this season?

Within the context of the team I mean...

yeah, that was definitely a case of 'where would this team be without this guy?'

And then he left...and ironically they got better...but that was because they signed sissoko et al and got Cabaye back

Talking of Lukaku and Benteke, can anyone else remember the 90s when Belgium actually had, man for man, a very decent side.

It was mainly made up of Standard Liege & Anderlecht players but together they were a team much better than people took them for.

They should, on paper, be up there with the very best over the next decade or so.

Hazard, Lukaku, Benteke, Fellaini, Mirallas, Witsel, Vertonghen, Vermaelen - some serious talent there!

Bet on him for the Champion Hurdle next year, when they teach that horse to sit tight he'll be a beast. McCoy had to pull the head off him the whole way around, all his energy was used up for the finish.

                  What to do?!!!

                  Bego (Guzan)
                  Cameron Hill Davies (Harte Demel)
                  Walcott Mata Bale Sissoko Michu
                  Sturridge Suarez (Fletcher)

                  .8 itb and 1 FT

                  A. Stand pat and save the FT for future game weeks when doubles are announced.
                  B. Fletcher>Ba
                  C. Fletcher>Rooney, Michu>4.3 Mid for -4
                  D. Something to get RVP in for a hit but have to fund it with Mata or Bale.

                  Thoughts?

i don't like have both Sturridge-Suarez upfront, so... get rid one of them

Very good IF he plays. Otherwise a sucker choice.

I rate him highly for next season.

                    Tip:

If Sir Beetrootnose has praised him then you know he will be dropped
