With Gameweek 29 behind us, we pay homage to Villa’s talismanic Belgian, acknowledge the resurgence in form down Loftus Road way and contemplate investment nearer the bottom of the table as the battle for survival heats up:

The Player

The six-fixture headache that was Gameweek 29 forced Fantasy managers into somewhat reassessing our options, with a handful of targets receiving increased interest prior to Saturday’s deadline. Despite back-to-back blanks in his previous couple of matches against Arsenal and City, Christian Benteke was drafted in by over 62,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers – his second highest haul of investors this season.

In a crucial away clash against fellow-strugglers Reading, the bustling Belgian rose to the occasion. Benteke grabbed Villa’s equaliser and also collected a couple of bonus points in the 2-1 win as Paul Lambert’s troops moved three points clear of the drop zone with nine games to go. If Benteke can replicate his returns from the previous nine, Villa have plenty cause for optimism – he’s averaged 6.1 points per game between Gameweeks 21-29, thanks to seven goals, an assist and 10 bonus points.

Indeed, with 12 strikes and four assists to his name, he has played a part in 16 of the 24 goals (or two-thirds) Lambert’s side have notched when he’s been on the pitch – a ratio superior to any other regular frontman and an overall contribution that could ultimately prove the difference between top-flight football and a drop to the Championship for the midlands outfit.

With form firmly on his side, Benteke also has the fixtures to maintain his rise up the Fantasy rankings. Next up is a run of three home games in four – QPR, Liverpool and Fulham all pay visit to Villa Park and with spot-kick duties also boosting his appeal, Benteke has already been picked up by over 9,000 FPL managers this week – the bandwagon continues to roll along relentlessly, reduced fixture list or not.

The Team

A 2-1 win at Southampton in the previous Gameweek was perhaps a signal of intent. Saturday saw Harry Redknapp’s side triumph in another proverbial six-pointer, this time seeing off Sunderland at Loftus Road to register back-to-back victories for the first time this term. Suddenly, the situation doesn’t seem quite so ominous for the R’s, as they move to within four points of safety – intriguingly, this upturn in form has coincided with the omission of Adel Taarabt from the starting XI.

Dropped for the first time since Gameweek 7, the Moroccan, according to Harry Redknapp, “suddenly wasn’t fit” for the Black Cats showdown, allowing Junior Hoilett to continue his impressive showings on the left. The former Blackburn man has now supplied an assist in each of his two appearances since stepping in for Taarabt, though he wasn’t the only one to provide a crucial contribution. Bobby Zamora’s recovery from ankle and hip injuries was key, allowing Redknapp to field a front two and pair the former Fulham man with Loic Remy – with Zamora leading the line, the Frenchman buzzed around up top and fired home his third goal in four starts since arriving at Loftus Road in January. Andros Townsend was the star performer, though, supplying a goal and pair of assists in his third start in four since arriving on loan from Spurs – dropped last week as Redknapp went 4-3-3 and fielded Remy on the right, he looks to have cemented his first-team berth with a stunning display.

Clearly, for all his side’s recent resilience, Redknapp’s troops won’t escape the drop by simply grinding out draws. Incredibly, QPR had scored just four times in 10 matches prior to Gameweek 28 – with five goals in their last two, a change in approach has reaped reward as their manager acknowledged post-match:

“That’s the best I’ve seen us playing going forward. We played 4-2-4 and went for it and I knew we would either win or get turned over because we were so open. We just have to keep being positive…we’ve given ourselves a chance.”

The next three fixtures could well afford the R’s to build their new-found momentum. Trips to Villa and Fulham are followed by a home clash against Wigan and with Redknapp keen to maintain a more offensive approach, his side will be confident of producing the goods against three of the worst defences in the top-flight as they look for goals to seal their survival.

The Talking Point

With Villa and QPR rising to the occasion last weekend, it serves a reminder of the potential on offer nearer the foot of the table as the scrap for survival intensifies. To an extent, the reduced Gameweek schedule forced us to change tactics and focus on the likes of Benteke and Remy but as Wigan demonstrated around this time last season, the battle to beat the drop can inspire relegation candidates to produce a level of returns way above their Fantasy price tag. Victor Moses was instrumental in helping the Latics escape the relegation trapdoor last time out, with a series of devastating displays in the final two months of the 2011/12 season making a mockery of his initial 5.0 price tag.

As the table begins to settle, certain teams will perhaps start to lose their edge and fall into the comfort zone – with a Capital One Cup in the locker and 40 points already on the board, Swansea, for example, have less reason to battle to the very last in every league match now. Having scored in one of his last nine, Michu’s owners may decide now is the time to look around for a replacement – certainly, with an ownership in excess of 50%, shedding the Spaniard may have increased appeal for those willing or needing to take chances.

Similarly, 30% owned Marouane Fellaini has dropped in performance; scoring in just two of his last 10 appearances, the Everton man is another with no more than pride to play for from here on in, though a double Gameweek 33 will no doubt boost his potential, providing he can avoid another booking before then. Newcastle’s recent displays, on the other hand, highlight what’s on offer when survival is on the line. An influx of January signings, with Moussa Sissoko registering returns on five of six appearances, has been instrumental in their about-turn in form – the Magpies have climbed the table thanks to three back-to-back home victories but with 33 points still only on the board, they have plenty still to play for.

In addition to fluctuating form, rest and rotation is also a real key factor now. Again, Swansea are a good example here – while Michu struggles to maintain his early-season form, it’s Luke Moore who has risen to prominence. He has scored both of his side’s last couple of goals after being handed a rare opportunity to impress, with the Spaniard shifted from lone forward to “the hole” in the last couple of fixtures. While Laudrup has the luxury of trying out different attacking variations, the likes of Benteke, Remy, Sunderland’s Steven Fletcher, Southampton’s Rickie Lambert and Wigan’s Arouna Kone can be pretty much guaranteed 90 minutes week in, week out between now and the end of the season.

The same is now likely to apply to Adam Le Fondre in light of Brian McDermott’s dismissal at Reading. Despite scoring 10 times – double the tally of any Royals player – Le Fondre was utilised mainly as a sub due to McDermott’s penchant for 4-4-1-1 with a target man leading the line. The Russian’s recent three-match suspension has allowed Le Fondre a first-team return and, while he has failed to notch in his two starts, his eye for goal may prove decisive over the closing Gameweeks.

Although Fantasy faith in the likes of Robin Van Persie, Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale is as resolute as ever, last weekend’s returns illustrated there is scope to widen our nets and look beyond the popular picks. As Harry Redknapp himself has shown, playing it safe at this point in the season is likely to end in disappointment; with top-flight safety on the line, the need to go for goals is already serving us up some intriguing differentials with the potential to turn many a mini league on its head.

Stick with Benteke for his QPR fixture IMO. You already have RVP and there's still no information about possible blank for UTD in GW31, so you could end up with both UTD forwards not playing in that GW

Get just Rooney then. Benteke is in great form and has QPR fixture.

I know that doubling on ManU attack is really tempting regarding Reading fixture, but 1st of all Reading is going to have a new menager, so you never know + UTD may have another blank in GW31 and I wouldn't like to end up with ~26 mln not playing in that week

to expand on the increasgly impossible case to make for sturridge (if a point is the norm it's not worth making, roy keane/dbronaldo 2011).

suarez with sturridge: 4 goals 3 assists.
sturridge in this time: 4 goals 2 assists.

the key difference is not in goals or assists (the predictable), it's coming in bonus (8-1 to Suarez) and injuries (the more unpredictable/lottery).

the predictable is happening, suarez is getting more of his points through assists rather than goals now, this makes perfect sense, he's roaming wider and deeper more with sturridge there. the last 3 times suarez scored more than 1 goal in a match? the wigan game sturridge was injured for, and the 2 games directly before sturridge's debut.

why is it not harming suarez as an fpl prospect? for the exact reason rodgers presumably signed sturridge (credit to coutinho too), for liverpool to score more goals, to be less reliant on one player. who has scored the most goals in 2013? liverpool.

but, this is where my opinion comes in and where i think suarez v sturridge is far from a no-brainer in suarez's favour (2 or 3 weeks ago it was very easy to argue the case). suarez is only really asserting his price-tag over sturridge due to injury and bonus points (and better timed dives, but that's a different debate). crouch potato on here put forward the injury proneness point weeks ago in this debate so is just about the only one i don't view as a bit of a hindsight hero. the irony is the ppi system which famously hated suarez last season is now a big friend to him due to his real clinical edge he's added this season and getting the 90mins every week which sturridge lacked due to building up match fitness after his move.

i think without sturridge suarez is essential, with sturridge i think he's "just" a very good option who i expect to be matched by sturridge for the rest of the season, probably not in pure points but in value, suarez doesn't cost 7.5mil. injury and bonus points have so far proved the main difference. the hattrick is a huge reason why suarez's stock is so high right now, a hattrick without sturridge, a player who is fit again now.
suarez's last 4 games without sturridge: brace, brace and assist, blank (gerrard failed to convert his penalty assist), hattrick.

this argument is very hard to make after last weekend as the scores read suarez 12, sturridge 2, the only reason i'm bothering to try and argue this. suarez had 1 shot in the match and 0 key passes (this was his assist http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8088/8544763167_d44449c487_o.gif). sturridge had 3 shots and 1 key pass. not saying either player deserved x or y, simply highlighting the extremely fine lines that can seperate a 12 and a 2. and before you suggest (correctly) that tottenham is a very hard fixture, in the reverse fixture (pre-sturridge) suarez had 7 shots, essentially my whole point of this post. expect more assists, slightly less goals, and sturridge to be right up there with him (at least value wise) as long as he stays fit.

Very good post. I've got both for now, but I agree that Sturridge's price is a huge consideration - he doesn't have to match Suarez in points to match him in value. Sturridge's fitness, however, is starting to look like a big factor.

Good posting, as I mentioned earlier on here Sturridge is already better value, since the Utd game his points per minute/per million has bettered Suarez's. I have them both and think there may be a case for keeping both given L'pool's kind fixtures, although the doubles to come may make that difficult.

For me it boils down to Suarez as a captaincy option, which whilst he may lack slightly behind Sturridge's overall value, he'll likely bring home the bigger scores that make a good captaincy option.

      Applebonkers, nice post.

But the thing that isn't addressed is if Sturridge isn't going to match Suarez but merely offer better value...then why not have a different striker like Benteke/Lambert/Remy/Lukaku who will offer equally good value and not be eclipsed by Suarez every week.

Why bother with an injury prone player like Sturridge who has such a small sample size when there is Suarez who is clearly superior in FPL and real life?

I like to play devil's advocate whenever I can.

But I honestly think Sturridge is a risky player to own. People who bought him when he was injured are now stubbornly clinging on to their hopes that he will match Suarez, while Suarez owners have stormed 90 points ahead.

Fair enough. It's always good to play devils advocate but you do it all the time 😉

I happen to agree that this was the only thing missing in his post - the suggestion that value isn't everything.

I don't know what that 90 points refers to but the fact Suarez capitalised on Sturridge's absence vs. Wigan was annoying. As Applebonkers pointed out though, their statistical performance vs. Spurs was nearly identical. I know it's not that simple but the 12 points vs. 2 points doesn't tell the whole story.

Who knows what we'd be saying now if Sturridge had played vs. Wigan.

I'll be holding onto Sturridge - I don't think this can be described as stubborn - due to uncertaintly around fixtures and the factors behind my original decision (as highlighted well by Applebonkers) not changing.

I also think owning Suarez should in no way effect whether or not you own Sturridge - it's not an either/or situation in my opinion. If you think Sturridge is going to outscore others in his price bracket then get him in.

when i bought sturridge (for NOR, pre dgw btw) liverpool weren't the rampant top scorers they are now but i suspected they'd be up there so thought 7.3 was an enticing price for a notoriously greedy (see dempsey and andros townsend) player. basically what greenwindmill says, i have benteke and sturridge who are currently at opposite ends of the point hogging scale, the only thing that eventualy matters though is points, not what team a player plays for.

      Great post.

My point remains that you are multiplying risks by owning Sturridge as if he gets injured or Suarez gets 10 yellow you lose points. With suarez you only take on the direct suspension risk.

Always better to own the golden goose than one of his bed fellows.

yeah i'd agree with this, the risk thing. you can also add ownership risk into the equation with suarez again looking good here due to safety in numbers.
i don't think suarez will get suspended in the end, think anorak said players only have 3 more games to survive, he only seems to get booked due to petulance if liverpool are losing and i fancy them to do well in their next few.

(nice little saying at the end)

Anyone planning to get Wigan players in soon? They have already had a missing gameweek which means they have a double, but they also have a missing gameweek 33, which means they are going to have 2 DGWS coming up at some points, thinking to have either Kone or Figueroa as they are cheap and can sit on the bench if i dont want them play

However they have great fixtures and tend to be amazing at the end of the season so i think its an overall good shout.... Feedback guys?

Hi all. I just noticed they've added this info to the FISO price changes page: "The latest CTC data is now posted at the end of fiso's CTC forum topic. after problems uploading after 6 March".

You can get it here: http://www.fiso.co.uk/forum/crack-the-code-2012-13-the-fiso-guide-to-fpl-price-changes-t97027-420.html

So they are still tracking the price changes, just having trouble uploading them to the site at the moment.

With the season drawing to an end, has anybody got any FPL horror stories to share?

My notable ones go something like this:
    1) Owning Aguero, Rooney and Mata at the start of the season when Tevez, RVP and Hazard went mental. Never fully recovered from that.

    2) Captaining Torres *shudders* at some point over the xmas period when he obviously did nothing, and RVP got himself a monster haul at Wigan.

started the season with bale over hazard, he got 2,2,1 (i captained for the 1!) whilst hazard got 21, 13, blank.
"fine! i'll switch to hazard." hazard gets 3,3,2 while the now sold bale gets 11, 8, 16!.
"fine! i'll switch back." bale gets 3, then gets injured and misses the next game. hazard gets 9,9.

if that's not a winner then i'll buy and hand deliver a prize to the winner.

Probably not a horror story as such but the one gameweek I'll look back on with huge regret is back in November, when City were at home to Villa.

I thought it was a good time to get rid of Tevez, as he was on a drought and his place was in question, and I decided against getting Silva in for a hit thinking he wasn't explosive enough to warrant one. They scored 19 and 16 respectively.

Actually reading that back it was pretty damn horrible.

Had Bale + Mata from the beginning when they did absolutely nothing.
      Got Hazard too late.
Sold Michu 3 GW's before his best spell of the season.
      Never owned RvP.
Got Suarez late (Pool DGW), transfered out and then he got a hat-trick.

      Best moments:

Getting Walcott back for 3rd time and (c) in his Newcastle rout.
Kept Bale + Mata since getting them back.
Rooney as differential when he scored a lot of points and the rest of the Fantasy options did nothing.

I got to encourage you to do this 'cos I've just set up with that pricey forward line myself. I consider it to be a similar tactic to the power 5; three heavy hitters up front, each week at least one of them should get an avalanche of points.

They get a goal early then I don't see Milan holding out. Gonna take some effort to keep Barca out at the Nou Camp

The mothers, it's the net I feel sorry for

      Rooney (c) FTW

He has a point though, had we done more in the first half v Chelsea when we were on top they would have had no way back in.

Everything, absolutely everything we hear in the build-up to this game points to a thrashing for Reading. Don't you just know it's going to be a goalless draw. 😉

He's just feeling his sorry arse after a good thrashing from Chelsea in the 2nd half.

If United blank in GW31 confirmed, does getting RVP back ( I sold him for Benteke before the previous GW ), is the way to go? I am not sure if I'd sell him again before the potential blank, but it could end up with playing 4-4-2 in GW31 for me, depending on how many games would be postponed...

      Saw this earlier.

Agree that he's getting very good at them but not unstoppable.

In the example they used against us, all our wall had to do was do its job and it would have hit them.

That particular FK could have been prevented, although it was coming at a blistering speed. But as Friedal says, he can unstoppable ones though,

I just mean it would be near impossible to estimate where the ball is heading and react quick enough in such a short time-frame.

Perfectly illustrates the gulf in class between the BBC and Sky. Sky would use a FIFA13 engine to simulate the freekick, whilst the BBC use some kind of Actua Soccer port.

Worth an 8 pt hit? Trying to afford to get RVP back.
