It says a lot about Santi Cazorla’s importance to Arsenal that no other player has been selected as often for the Gunners first-team this term. In his debut season for the north London outfit, the Spaniard has featured in all of his side’s 29 leagues fixtures, with 28 starts and a single sub appearance to his name thus far.

Snapped up from Malaga last summer, Cazorla arrived with a reputation for the spectacular – his threat from long range and set-piece ability had lit up La Liga many a time, though a single goal in his first six league games suggested his settling-in period at the Emirates would be a gradual one. Handed a role in “the hole”, Cazorla also chipped in with a trio of assists over that opening period; an indication that his Fantasy contribution would be steady, if somewhat unspectacular. As Theo Walcott struggled to establish himself with just one start in the first 10 matches and with Olivier Giroud toiling under the weight of expectation after Robin Van Persie’s exit, Cazorla seemed the obvious route into Arsenal’s attacking options.

Come Gameweek 11, though, the Fantasy landscape started to evolve. Reinstalled to the first XI, Walcott’s blistering form saw him rack up returns and with his initial price having dropped, many Cazorla owners jumped on board the bandwagon as a means of freeing up budget. Although Walcott increasingly proved the more popular pick, Cazorla kept pace with his fellow midfielder and in spite of a move to the left flank to accommodate the returning Jack Wilshere centrally, has recently overtaken his fellow wide man in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings, scoring three goals in the last five in a spell where Walcott has failed to find the net. Having now produced double figures for the season, the playmaker has spoken of his determination to push on as Arsenal chase down Spurs in the race for fourth:

“I think a figure of 11 goals this season is good for a midfielder, but I think I can score more and improve in that facet of the game. It’s an aspect of my game I’ve always tried to improve. Last season at Malaga I hit nine and my target was to go beyond that. Everything influences it (the improvement in front of goal). You have to try and improve as an individual and, ultimately, if you’re better, the team makes you better too. It all works in tandem and you need the two to come together, the individual and the collective.”

The league situation could be a deciding factor for those eyeing up Cazorla’s acquisition. Having upset the odds with a valiant win at Bayern and followed that up with a victory at Swansea, the Gunners seem to have found their stride at the right time. The short-term schedule looks more than favourable as Wenger’s side now entertain Reading and also have back-to-back home fixtures over double Gameweek 33, as Norwich and Everton make their way to the Emirates.

While all of the top four are either still in the FA Cup or Europe (or both in Chelsea’s case), Arsenal have only the league to focus on – crucially, then, no rest and rotation can be expected at a time where the likes of other premium priced midfielders such as Juan Mata, Eden Hazard or even David Silva’s game time may suffer in their respective sides’ hunt for silverware. At 9.3, then, Cazorla looks an obvious like for like swap, while owners of Marouane Fellaini and Michu may also be eyeing up his acquisition if budget can be freed up – Fellaini is suspended for the next two while Michu has one goal in nine and has a blank Gameweek 33.

As the likes of Giroud and Lukas Podolski struggle for form or game time respectively, Cazorla, along with Walcott, looks key to the Gunners’ fortunes over the remaining few matches. There’s little doubt that the Spaniard is his side’s form attacker – a return to the centre as a result of Wilshere’s ankle problem merely heightens his appeal and the recent revelation on Walcott’s pelvic injury, making him a doubt for the Gameweek 31 Emirates clash with the Royals, has surely compounded matters.

While many are content to hold fire on their transfer plans, perhaps waiting for the result of the Chelsea – United FA Cup replay to get a clearer picture, Cazorla’s 23 point haul against Reading last time out makes a more than persuasive case for inclusion; he has received more transfers in than any other player since the end of Gameweek 30, though many will be content to wait until the upcoming internationals are at least out the way for fear of tempting fate with any acquisition.

Hey guys, what should I do with this team?

    Begovic--Cerny

    Clyne--Martin.R--Samba--Davies--Harte

    Walcott--Michu--Sissoko--Mata--Bale

    Suarez--RVP--Pogrebynak

1 FT, 3.3 in the bank.

What I am thinking is Sissoko-->Cazorla.

    Thanks! 🙂

What do you reckon is the best strategy to plan for the DGW, with all the information we have now?

Save your FT this week and wait for more news, or take a hit to load up on definite DGWers like Caz, Berb and Mert and remove those with ensuing blanks?

Well before Walcott got injured it was all looking so simple...now it looks like I may be doing Wally > Caz and keeping Michu for another two. Michu > Wally later and then get Hazard/Fellaini/Mertesacker maybe...to be honest I think this DGW is a bit overhyped.

I'll be using mine GW32 or 33. With it i can get 8 for GW33, then using transfers 10 for GW36 for -4. GW33 DGW is far more appealing than GW36, especially lose.

That's the thing, we won't know until after the deadline, but acting on what we know might pay off with these guys having favourable fixtures this week...

How exactly will either a United OR Chelsea DGW affect your DGW plans unless you plan to get rid of your current United/Chelsea contingent?

I don't plan to get rid of either Rooney or Mata regardless of what happens, so therefore it doesn't affect me much...

I meant that in terms of what we know now, with regards to the definite DGWers...

Obviously a United DGW will make you choose a Kagawa/Nani over a Lampard/Hazard, for example...

I tried to keep him, but it compromises the rest of the team. If Chelsea win I may re-plan knowing Bale will have a DGW. But when I kept him in, I couldn't get half the players i wanted

Zep - continuing the conversation from the last page:

I traveled to Spain last spring and absolutely loved it there! (CL game in the Bernebeu was definitely a highlight). I want to return at some point and visit Barcelona this time. Italy is a big one on my list, followed by France. perhaps i'll spend a semester abroad somewhere in Europe while i'm in college...

will add Scotland (Edinburgh) to my list but I want to travel to Spain Italy and France first and foremost.

Ah cool, Spain is a great country... but sadly, I have only really been there on lazy summer holidays by the beach, not so much travelling for cultural touristy reasons (I doubt touristy is even a word, but I'm sure you get my point)... did spend quite a bit of time in Barcelona though...

Spain is definitely a place I'd like to see more of...

France is ok, a beautiful place, but I found the people there a little bit reserved, and less approachable... but that was just my experience, don't let that deter you...

When I think about it, I really want to go everywhere all over again, just to see if my perspective changes, as I'm sure it will... I know for a fact I visited Venice too young, and that I never had my "Architectural" eyes on... I would love to go back and see those places again...

If Chelsea win against Man Utd...Spurs will have a blank in GW33

    😯

I only just properly registered this

And if Man Utd win then Stoke have a blank...meaning I won't have Begovic

Jesus this is mayhem! Bale will have to go if Chelsea win and if Man Utd win I will have to get in another keeper possibly as Bunn is my other keeper (place at risk)

    This is horrendous!

The simple fact is everyone else will be in the same situation and will most likely have to take a 4 point hit to sort it out. And with the DGW there will be a lot of players worth gambling on. I'd say he will fall quite a bit if he does have a blank.

Yes I understand what you mean, there is always the threat of rotation in your mind, given the history of his struggle to gain consistency... I'm not convinced that threat still exists though in Fergie's mind... but time will tell on that...

Bego is definitely a safe option... and could be benched for Fab in GW33...

I reckon if Fabianski or Mucha look like keeping their place they could actually be good options for the run-in either way. With that security of always having Begovic on hand. I like DDG too but there is that slight uncertainty that will always be hanging over things. And I'd prefer the peace of mind of having Begovic who you can count on to start no matter what.

Wallabies are cute little things... and are generally protected in Australia... only in some parts are they considered pests due to large uncontrollable numbers and infestation due to having no natural predators... Kangaroos are much more widespread, they reckon about 25 million of them... and they cause a lot of problems for farmers etc...

This is actually a very interesting topic... I foresee Kangaroo meat becoming the next harvestable red meat in consumerism, considering the relatively little work needed to look after them... they produce around 12kg of meat compared to about 18kg from a sheep and need much less water to sustain themselves, and emit hardly no methane gas due to how they break down the chemicals differently..

Ok I have decided, no matter what happens I'll be saving a transfer GW32 so I have 2FT for the DGW.

I don't mind if I have to play 5-3-2, saving a transfer will be key I think.

Oh and please please please Suarez, do not get a yellow this weekend! That would be a serious pain in the arse.

2FT for GW33 will mean an -8 point hit is 4 transfers altogether. Perfectly reasonable for a DGW I think.

I think we are all missing a big factor in this cup tie. The rest factor. Both United and Chelsea have only 2 days rest from the league game to the replay. But after the replay United's next game is the derby on Monday night, a full week off. In that time Chelsea will have played twice.

This means that United could, conceivably, play a more full strength team knowing they have 7 days recovery time. Of course how many they chose to risk ahead of the derby is another matter, but it may be worth considering.

what point exactly are you trying to make? I'm a bit confused...I believe they will play a full strength team regardless for the cup tie. It's the league game that we might see rests. What in your opinion will be the lineup for the Sunderland game?

I think it's more about Chelsea. I expect most of our big names to play v Sunderland.

Given previous history I'd say RvP sits out the Chelsea tie, but I've given up trying to predict Fergoe, and just taken to giving what i think is logical advice.

Hmmm, that's interesting. The way I see it is why would Fergie rest RVP for the Chelsea game? Surely the title is all but tied up so he can afford the risk of resting a key player in the league? Whereas the Fa Cup is still up for grabs...why rest your best players for such a key game against a rival?

IMO, both Chelsea and United will be at full strength for the cup replay...

United will be a full strength for the Citeh game since they will have 7 days rest... it is the Sunderland game where they will make some changes and possibly rest RVP/Rooney etc...

Chelsea will also play a fairly weakened side against Rubin, knowing they probably have enough strength to get the job done over the to legs... but I still fear a rest for one or two of the big guns like Mata/Hazard etc in the league...

Judging by past examples, I'd imagine it's more likely Hazard is benched vs Southampton. Benitez has never rested Mata in an away game since he has taken charge. Whereas he did rest Hazard in an away game to Norwich where Mata did the business. This is probably due to the stats showing that Mata is superior away and Hazard is superior at home.

With this in mind I'd say Hazard is more at risk for a rest against Soton.

In the event of Chelsea winning the FA cup replay and Spurs having a blank GW33...it's worth noting that Bale would have City at home GW34.

So, if you are forced to sell Bale because of his blank it's perhaps a little reassuring that his following fixture is quite a tough one.

Ok, it's Bale and he can score against anyone but maybe you'd rest a bit easier knowing you might be able to survive without him for GW34 before buying him back for his DGW.

I think I will get an Arsenal defender (Merte or Fab) in this week already for Reading at Emirates and upcoming DGW, but saving is fine I would say... I also agree with Berba's post below so perhaps the Fabianski punt then. Or get DDG. How will you afford Siss to Caz? Your still missing like 2m, right?

thanks again. sounds good for what you're planning

I'm 1.1 short of sissoko > caz. will probably need to downgrade one or two of bego, enrique, and cueller

I'd be wary of the Bego/Bunn combo. I'm quite sure that you stuck with this combo knowing that you'd change it one day. Keeping Bego is fine (after all he faces a possible DGW near the end of the season if United win) so Bunn has to be the one to go for me.

Boruc is a decent partner for Bego at the moment (bar GW31), or if you wanna capitalise on DGW players Flappyhandski seems to be the best "short term" solution. Alternatively, you could pick a keeper to cover Bego for GW31, 33, 37 and 38 here. At first glance, Schwarzer and Mucha are decent shouts, and the drawbacks of those keepers are quite obvious.

Your defence is fine for now I feel, in fact even if Walcott doesn't play (with marv) your defence is quite good in terms of being decent alternatives for whoever that rests.

        cheers mate!

but should I use a transfer this week (perhaps for losing bunn)? or should I save it and sort it out next week?

But thats only half of it. At this stage the basic set up is satisfactory but when the full role out happens it will be a massive improvement.

We're currently testing 'No Christina mode' as we speak, it's one of the newest features. This comment for instance would be invisible under the new mode.

There is also the 'Don't show me posts by people outside the top 4k' mode which would obviously make you invisible too.

      LOL
