Everton scrape past Stoke courtesy of a wonderful solo strike by Kevin Mirallas. The Toffees produce a second clean sheet in succession but for their visitors, there was little reason to be cheerful. Here’s the Stock Check from Saturday’s final encounter…

On the Up

Kevin Mirallas
The Belgian grabbed the only goal of the game as Everton registered a third straight victory, following wins over Reading and City at Goodison. Mirallas has now scored or assisted in each of his last three at home and has now started six of the last seven – while he offers potential for double Gameweek 33, his propensity for picking up injuries will always be a concern; he limped off clutching his thigh with 10 minutes left on the clock.

The Everton Defence
David Moyes was boosted by the return of Tim Howard and Phil Jagielka after recent back and ankle injuries respectively. Tonight’s 1-0 win saw the Toffees register back-to-back clean sheets for only the second time this term, having kept out City in the previous Gameweek – with QPR, Fulham and West Ham their final three visitors, their chances of further defensive points at home look strong.

Leighton Baines
With Marouane Fellaini and Steven Pienaar suspended, David Moyes solved his midfield dilemma by intriguingly rolling out a 3-5-2. This afforded Leighton Baines license to patrol the left flank in an even more advanced position than normal, with Seamus Coleman on the opposite wing, but with a trip to Tottenham next, it remains to be seen whether Moyes will risk operating with a three-man backline.

Going Down

Stoke Defence
Owners of Asmir Begovic and co were left disappointed after the Potters failed to keep out their opponents once again. While Tony Pulis aren’t giving too much away – they’ve conceded more than one goal just once in the last seven – it’s a single clean sheet in 13 now for Stoke. Marc Wilson’s 3.9 price tag and security of starts may be enough to persuade his owners to hold, though, particularly with three home matches in the next four.

The Stoke Attack
Going forward, Stoke are even less impressive. Their blank at Goodison means they have scored just once in the last five Gameweeks, with a recent shift to 4-4-2 making little difference to their attacking potential – struggling at both ends of the pitch, they are just four points clear of third-bottom Villa, having played a game more than Paul Lambert’s side. Villa are next to the Britannia in what looks to be a vital encounter.

Bonus Predictions – Courtesy of the Bap Chap

Sunderland 0 Man United 1 – Van Persie 3, Vidic 2, Young 1 (in the mix Carrick, Buttner, Smalling)
Arsenal 4 Reading 1 – Gervinho 3, Cazorla 2, Arteta 1 (in the mix Mariappa) (top 2 very tight)
Man City 4 Newcastle 0 – Silva 3, Clichy 2, Kompany 1 (extremely tight)
Southampton 2 Chelsea 1 – Rodriguez 3, Lambert 2, Terry 1 (in the mix S.Davis)
Swansea 1 Tottenham 2 – Vertonghen 3, Bale 3, Sigurdsson 1 (the 1 is very low and open)
West Ham 3 West Brom 1 – Carroll 3, O’Neil 2, Collins 1
Wigan 1 Norwich 0 – Kone 3, Beausejour 2, Alcaraz 1 (very low and open behind Kone, no gimmes)
Everton 1 Stoke 0 – Mirallas 3, Jelavic 2, Distin 1 (in the mix Gibson)

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm assuming as a Chelsea fan, you want rid of him immediately and that's your point here.

You (Chelsea fans) should have appreciated his success and given him a chance. Now he's going to walk away with another FA Cup win to his name and CV and you'll end up with another manager, at least until January 2014...

Yep, I've had enough of my rants for the day. I know it's all Roman's fault but there's no point looking back now. Rafa's selfish attitude is doing no justice for our fight for the CL spot.

True he's putting the top 4 slot at risk for another cup shot.

Can you blame him though? He knows he's on his way at the end of the season, he doesn't care if you miss out on CL next year.

I thought you were talking about the scrolling ticker thing rather than actual subtitles, guessing he thought the same.

To be fair I didn't think he was doing that either. You being deaf doesn't result in the subtitles being nonsensical (but being drunk might... or the fact that I suspect they probably are totally crap, much like the ones on the BBC news channel).

Asking if you're drunk is a fairly standard response on this board... whatever the ill, it's usually drink-induced according to the folk on here.

I think we need to calm it. To be honest, I think Ron's reputation goes before him a little on this - I read his comment above and didn't immediately take it as him taking the piss out of your need for subtitles. I don't think he jumped to that conclusion from your original comment and therefore never had that intent with his reply.

To be fair, I read your post as just talking about the line of sports info that runs along the bottom of Sky news. Didn't occur to me that you were talking about subtitles for the spoken commentary. I didn't read RonH's comment as being about that. But I can see how it sounded that way.

WR when you said the subtitles on SSN looked liked something out of an alien channel, I assumed you were talking about all the info bars.

I had no idea you had hearing difficulties.

I'm sorry to hear that, but I was in no way trying to take the piss.

Sacking MON this close to seasons end is a bit wreckless - I really hope Sunderland go down as they are a real bad team to watch and Yes MON is to blame for that....but who is going to replace him and keep them up?

Their squad is not good enough the defence containing Bardsley Oshea & Bramble should get beaten every week so to lose by just the 1 goal is a great achievement (all 3 surplus to requirements by other PL clubs) & that midfield resembles the scrapings in the toilet bowl....mostly unwanted cost offs.

As was Graham - a sub at Swansea that the fans didnt want.

Squad not good enough and apologies to any fans but a truly horrible team to watch!

Disagree, they've got a pretty good squad imo.

Adam Johnson, Seb Larsson, Sessegnon, Gardner, Cattermole, McClean - you must be able to get some goals/creativity out of that lot in midfield.

O'Shea won enough at United, he can't be that bad. Cuellar's a solid defender as are Bardsley and Rose. And Mignolet's a solid goalie.

Graham scored plenty goals last year for Swansea.

Shoehorning Larsson into CM and a bunch of midfielders in defence and spending a wodge on AJ when they had 2 decent wingers seems like a big mistake to me.

Yep, Gardner's a good midfielder, but he's not a RB, nor is Colback a LB.

Larsson and McClean did a very good job for them on the wings last year, they should have spent the Johnson money on a CM and a CB.

The unfortunate reality is that they are now one of 9 teams that are in the relegation battle. Southampton have climbed to 12th! of the back of the Chelsea win. Its going to be a close run thing. Too close.

I think he's done ok personally, but a dodgy LB doesn't destory a team. O'Neil hasn't got the best out of that squad, should have gone earlier, not now when its tough for a new man to come in.

He's done 'OK' but he's hardly a proven, solid and dependable LB.

As a Spurs fan I can assure that a dodgy LB can indeed destroy a team... enter BAE.

There's not that many of them in the PL tbh, lots are good going forward but a bit suspect defensively, including our LB Santon and the FFS worldbeater, Baines.

It's funny, I said on here earlier that I hope Sunderland and Villa go down. Neither team deserves to play in the Premiership on their form over the past two seasons or so. They've both had runs to establish themselves, both spent a fair bit of money and haven't taken their chance. Time to give hungrier teams a chance to have a go at the big time.

The sacking is about staying in the Prem though, Bonz.

The SAFC board must have felt that on current form Sunderland were going to be relegated. I personally think they were correct in that assumption, if that indeed was what they were thinking.

They are surely hoping that some 'new manager bounce' will give them the required shot in the arm in the next 7 games to get them enough points to stay up.

Based on the last 10 games they were on course to get few if any points from their last 7 games. What else, realistically were they to do?

Agree they will wont to stay up but MON knows his squad and whilst I dont like the way he as this lot set up to play...the players there are "runts" Cabaye4 indicates this
Adam Johnson, been poor and explains why no decent club went in for him after City wanted rid
Seb Larsson, average player who was in and out at Birmingham
Sessegnon, Agree - like him but he is a striker
Gardner, Come off it - journeyman at best
Cattermole, Out till end of season
McClean - had an impact last year but has been poor this year

Cuellar couldnt get regular games at Villa
Bramble well he has always been a calamity
Rose is a midfielder playing LB
OShea - a Utd squad player with no set position for 10yrs

Poor squad of Premiership Players that not many other Clubs wanted.

Well yes, you've got a point, if United do beat Chelsea though, I may just get him in sooner rather than later.

My brother thinks I'll need "divine intervention'' in order to win the Team NZ play-offs...

          Feeling confident 😉

There's none of that rubbish on team Australia and we have the 6th ranked player in the game 🙂

I'd love to see the standings of the current scores amongst us in the Team NZ playoff. I have that confident feeling that will likely be lost when Suarez and Berbs start banging them in.

Now I just have to hold on and hope Sturridge and Enrique keep the likely hauls from Berbs and Suarez at bay.
