Plenty have argued that the goalkeeper position is the most important on the football field, the custodian a vital cog in any squad. In Fantasy terms, however, the goalkeeper has gradually slipped into oblivion.

He’s become an afterthought, a position that needs to be filled rather than one that is considered a key contributor to our squads or starting XI. It’s time for the Fantasy games to address this – goalkeepers should be one of our priority positions, with significant rewards for good selection.

You only have to scan the latest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) rankings to realise the issue. Joe Hart, the City keeper, is currently the top rated stopper in the game, with a miserly 121 points – that’s some 81 points behind Robin Van Persie, the leading striker and 80 points behind the top midfielder, Gareth Bale. Perhaps more significantly, with 121 points, Hart is roughly the equivalent of Lukas Podolski up front (117 points) or Aaron Lennon in midfield (118) – both bit part Fantasy assets who many would hardly consider mainstays.

At this point, we have to give credit where it’s due and remember that the FPL is a game that attempts to reward goalkeepers – there are save points on offer, available exclusively to keepers and yet, it’s clear, that these are not enough to allow this position to bridge the gap and take on a significant level of importance. This situation is compounded by the bonus points system that leans towards attacking players and very rarely recognises goalkeepers – Asmir Begovic is the current top earner with just seven bonus points.

In the Sky Sports game, the goalkeeper situation is exacerbated by the fact that there are no save points on offer. Hart can only gain from clean sheets in this game and his total of 107 points, whilst top ranked for goalkeepers, is some 116 points behind Santi Cazorla, the leading midfielder, and a huge 135 behind Luis Suarez, the top ranked forward. Indeed, by comparison, Joe Hart has fetched the same number of points as Fernando Torres in this game and less than James McCarthy of Wigan – again, then, Hart’s importance as an asset seems severely underplayed.

Quite simply, clean sheets are not enough. They’ve been in decline in recent seasons and this term we could be heading for the worst ever season for five years. Back in 2008/09, there were 247 shutouts on show in the Premier League, an average of one clean sheet every 3.08 matches. By 2010/11 this had dropped to 191 in total, an average every 3.91 matches. While we saw a slight recovery last season, currently this term is tracking an average of a shut-out every 3.92 matches. In simple terms then, in the last five seasons, the clean sheet has declined as a Fantasy football scoring method. Have the games adjusted their rules accordingly? Empathically, I’d say they’ve stood still.

Adjusting the balance with the price list is not enough and, in fact, when you look at a stalwart keeper like Pepe Reina, back in 2008/09 when, statistically, there were more clean sheets about, you could acquire his FPL services for 6.0. He started this season at the same price, despite the fact that clean sheets are seemingly far harder to come by. Low and behold, this season Reina has 86 points to his name, in 2008/09 he scored a mammoth 169 points. The decline in points output is pretty obvious and yet, presumably to balance increases in attacking positions, Reina’s initial price has been frozen.

As mentioned, the FPL have at least attempted to compensate for keepers with save points and while this successfully narrows the gap between the heavy-hitter clean sheet getters and the budget and mid-price keepers, it still falls short in terms of bringing goalkeepers in line with the other positions.

Fantasy games now have to find the confidence to take matters further. Goalkeeper points scoring needs examining in detail with save points established as the norm, with points for clean sheets hiked for goalkeepers and perhaps even used as a multiplier or an unlock. In effect, goalkeepers should be rewarded further for clean sheets when they are seen to be an effective last line of defence. Let’s double the save points awarded when a clean sheet is won or, presuming the data gathered is correct, award a point for each save if a shut-out is achieved.

Looking at Joe Hart as an example, given that he has fewer saves to make playing in front of the City back four, he would not benefit greatly from double save points when a clean sheet is won. However, if saves were awarded as points in a clean sheet scenario, he’d be 16 points better off – taking him to 137 points in total (Hart earned just one save point in a match with a clean sheet this season). Jussi Jaaskelainen, the keeper with the most saves in the FPL game, would be 29 points better off, having kept eight clean sheets. Minus the nine save points he already gained from these matches, this would take him to 141 points. Jaaskelainen’s biggest points haul would have come against Fulham in Gameweek 3 when he made eight saves – he would therefore have amassed 14 points – two appearance points, four for the clean sheet and eight save points.

Are these totals that wrong? Shouldn’t a keeper have the opportunity to rival strikers and earn double figures without having to pull off a penalty save? Wouldn’t it be more exciting to watch your keeper fling himself to make save after save knowing that, if he can just keep his sheet clean, these would convert into points at the end of the match? In my view, this mechanic would rejuvenate keepers and make them a position that excites when watching games, rather than a player that can only lose you points as the match goes on.

These are radical changes and some serious modelling would be required to ensure balance is achieved but, looking at the obvious decline in clean sheets and the gradual decay of the goalkeeper as a position of importance, it seems obvious that such a step has to be considered. When we see squads with non-playing goalkeepers and top ranked managers settling on budget and mid-price stoppers in order to spend in attacking areas, it screams out that there is a balance issue.

Fantasy football should attempt to mirror reality in order to create a compelling experience. It’s up to the games to react and address this or go on letting the goalkeeper become a meaningless commodity when, in reality, he’s possibly the most important player on the pitch.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Who would you rather play for GW32:

    Townsend vs Wigan (at home)
    Benteke vs Stoke (away)

leaning towards Townsend as recent form has been very good though he was unlucky against Fulham. Then again Benteke is on fire and AV need to win as well but can see the game being a dull draw.

Need BAP chap to clarify but as it is my understanding that a shot on target counts towards more PPI (and therefore possible BP) than saving said shot on target.

That seems nuts and if a save was given more PPI then keepers who put on stellar performances would therefore be more likely to rewarded with BPs and could therefore even this out a bit.

one way of looking at it is that the player itself has lost pts for the penalty save
and it is similar to having a shot saved in a 1v1 situation

on the keeper situation,I agree that a penalty save should have significantly greater
PPI than that said "shot on target".

With the number of stats being accounted for now, surely saves can be divided
into two separate divisions of being a simple regular save and one which stopped
          an almost certain goal.

PPI being set like that could help in keepers getting their deserved BAPS.

EA could give this PPI situation a serious thinking over the
off-season and try to bring in the human element to make it a bit more balanced of sorts.

Exactly, its the formula thats wrong not the methodology. They should take a list of the Sky Sports Man of the Matches and try to see what correlation there is between the performances that earnt those awards and begin from there.

The facts is...they're/we're using a robotic formula that is awarding players through cold statistical information right now.

Before this it was completely subjective with a 'man in the crowd' approach applied. Which (to many) led to lazy and biased bonus points. I would hate this version to come back for obvious reasons.

What they/we need to find is a middle ground, but that requires coming up with a solution/formula ourselves that balances both approaches to make it fairer.

          see what's difficult is

do we use a robot/computer or do we use a mix? The convenience of the new way is that it doesn't involve any human input, the stats should be there from the PA/Opta source and then the PPi formula is applied to give you the answer. Ok it involves human action but it doesn't involve any subjective intervention.

For goalkeepers it's difficult and there is also the grey area where we have to decide whether MOTM = 3 bonus points.

Right now it sometimes gives the obvious MOTM the 3 bonus point but that usually depends on them having a good game whilst avoiding ppi penalties like shots off target/yellows etc.

With goalkeepers all you have to work with is save counts + crosses caught. They don't have any tackles, interceptions, shots, key passes, crosses, shots blocked to add to their score. So it's harder for them to gain the 3 baps.

So to reward them more it's simply a case of needing that human intervention or tweak to direct them towards a keeper because the computer is only going to ever give bonus points to a GK in extraordinary circumstances (see Stoke WBA)

and those GK baps usually come as a result of pretty much nobody doing anything, which goes against what you've been saying...that GKs should be rewarded for outstanding performances. The way it is now they are mostly rewarded when they have had little to do, which seems perverse!

No my only issue in this instance is that for PPi:

            1 SonT > 1 Save

I'm not sure on the exact numbers but this means that if a striker has lots of shots and the keeper saves them all then the striker is picking up the BPs. Reverse the arrow (and still give SonT positive PPI but less than a save) and keepers pick up BPs.

We need bap chap to shed some light.

that journo could easily be replaced by 3 journos writing their preferences
        down and then BAPS awarded

I do agree on finding a balance between ruling it on cold hard facts and some random

My viewpoint is that attacking points need to be reduced rather than defensive points boosted. Defenders and Goalkeepers are still relatively level in fpl terms, its only strikers that are woefully better value than elsewhere.

Whenever I watch Bale it appears to me that he is regularly taking up excellent positions on the oppositions defencive lines and thus get the chances that rightfully should be Defoes. Admittedly as he is finishing them I dont think anyone is complaining, but why not just play him as a striker?

2 FT and don't know how to use them. I am thinking of actually getting GW 36 double GW player. Too bad City don't have that kind of a good game. Only if I went Clichy last week. Any good GW 36 players to get this week. I am thinking Dawson for Harte/ Cameron. I can bench him GW 33 anyway. And he has a lot of good fixtures after

Pending injury news, how does my (somewhat) alternate GW33 team look?

    de Gea
Evra - Baines - Enrique (Samba, Clyne)
Cazorla (C)- Fellaini - Walcott - Sissoko (Bale)
    Carroll - Berbatov - Lambert

Risky going without RVP, but I quite like the look of Carroll's recent form.

As Ive mentioned before here, I would like to see a clean sheet rewarded (for GK and Def) for keeping a 45 min cleansheet. ie instead of a cleansheet being worth 4 it could be worth 2 for the first 45 and 2 for the second as well (or subtle variation on - perhaps 1 for the first half and 3 upon completing a successful 90). This would likely up a defenders and keepers value slightly, but that merely means we have to choose how to spend our 100m more wisely. Or Keepers could have 2 for the first 45 mins and 4 for the second to up their relative value.

Other subtle changes to the exiting system would not upset the good balance that FPL has but would help steer away slightly from template teams. These changes need to be quite simple though as FPL has to cater for the millions of casuals as well as the more dedicated manager.

I would go so far as to say that this season it largely hasn't mattered defence wise much at all, including defenders not just keepers as Mark mentions in his article. Not forgetting of course the poor old DMs as well. A couple of minor tweaks to FPL scoring could actually vastly increase the options of where our money is spend and reduce the chances of a template team a bit.

I think this is rubbish. if a goalkeeper has an awful game and costs his team the game why should he get 2 points because he didn't have to do anything for the first 45 minutes?

OK, to spell it out for you cos you're clearly hard of thinking (you started the attitude buddy not me):

An outfield player can score or assist at pretty much any time. Can indeed have an awful awful game and fluke a goal and come away with a goal and some bonus. Conversely a defender or keeper can play a blinder all game and come away with nothing because of a fluke or poor play from someone else.

This is not about whether he cost his team anything, its a fantasy game and the performance needs to be rewarded, not necessarily the result.

If you still can't understand then I can't help you. 😛

Nice Article and some good points raised. But don't agree with all there. 1pt for every save will be insane. Even a simple shot from long distance straight into the keepers hand is a save. Though i think it should 1pt every 2 saves instead of the existing 1 every 3.

1 point for a save would encourage rotation with 2 cheap keepers as the rewards for a clean sheet against better opposition (more likely at home) would be disproportionally large. This would encourage a full squad of 15 players.

An excellent article and spot on too. Surely it must be right that, more or less, the four categories of player (GLK, DEF, MID, STR) should yield approximately the same average value of points per £. At the moment the game is skewed towards midfielders and forwards. Time to redress the balance!

Agreed. Also its not just about points per pound though its about increasing the options of where we spend our money, which will make things more interesting!

Clean sheets were once upon a time more plentiful and a team HAD to have a decent defence, usually including 3x6m+ bracket defenders - Terry, Carragher etc etc.

Now that things have changed FPL need to tweak the scoring accordingly.

Its a good article but don't really agree. The game is about us as players compeating against others for points, not about Hart vs RVP. We all must choose 2 keepers and I don't think its something we choose likely. There has being much thought over the best rotations, spread sheets generated etc to help choose.

If you look at teams their keeper combinations tend to be different, if you start rewarding them more then more people will start choosing Hart/Cech and more teams will look the same. Thats not something I want.

Also if you take the points per million how much do keepers differ from forwards? I don't know but I bet it would surprise a few.

Other strategies are employable. I went De Gea/Bunn at christmas, something I am very happy with. My point is there are so many different combinations of keepers in peoples teams at the moment, much more varied than midfielders or forwards. I would look at this as a good thing.

Keepers tend to be poor value since you have to have two but can only play one. The cost of the position is normally around 8.5-10m depending on your picks. Comparing 10m of keepers to a 11m+ player that you can captain and there is a value issue.

In that case the Remy sub is £5.9. Which is spread over both strikers for a cos of 11m + £2.85.

£13.85 for a striker compared to £10m for significantly less returns from keepers.
