Fantasy football is a simple game – in many ways, that remains its strength. While games such as the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) have embroidered the basic foundations of the original Fantasy League game, changes to the trusted formula have been few and far between: when the games do iterate, they do it gradually.

In contrast, Premier League football has shifted dramatically in recent seasons. Tactically, the top-flight teams have adapted shape and formation to the extent that we’re seeing very few take to the field in a traditional 4-4-2, opting instead for an adaptation of 4-4-1-1 or 4-3-3. The lone forward, with flanking attackers or a support striker raiding from just in front of the midfield, is now becoming the norm when Sky reel out their pre-match graphics. This has had several knock-on effects on the roles that players adopt on a weekend and, subsequently their Fantasy output over the season. The question is, are the folk behind our Fantasy games aware of the impact this is having and are they brave enough to adapt accordingly?

For me, the popularity of the 4-5-1 or the 4-4-1-1 and the increased use of the lone striker is the main contributor to the growth of the Fantasy team template. The formation has changed the roles of individuals in the player list, making the key targets obvious and consigning yet another batch of players to limbo status along with defensive midfielders.

With so many teams playing a lone striker, we’re seeing our choice in this position narrowed immediately. A whole swathe of talented forwards such as Lukas Podolski, Kevin Mirallas, Peter Odemwingie and Danny Welbeck are rarely given the opportunity to flourish in a 4-4-2 – instead deployed wide and therefore banished to the cupboard by Fantasy managers, only to be called upon when the fixture list and, in particular, double Gameweeks, add to their limited attraction.

In addition, the midfield pool is also narrowed as a result of the growth of the support striker. Players such as Michu, Marouane Fellaini and Kevin Nolan emerge as obvious targets that are available for midfield prices but are thrust into the attack and capable of earning profits to surpass the majority of strikers on offer, let alone wingers.

So both the forward and midfield talent pools become smaller. In the FPL, we find ourselves picking from a cast of around 15 players to fill eight slots. Budget and mid-price options supplement this and rise and fall in popularity but, basically, as the 4-4-1-1 has flourished, we’ve seen obvious targets emerge to reduce the variety on show within our teams and leagues.

I’ve spoken before on how I see an additional attacking midfielder position or perhaps just a new “attacker” or “forward” position to complement the “strikers”. This fifth pool of players would incorporate the likes of Michu and Mirallas, forcing us to sign traditional midfielders in our midfield (Mousa Dembele, Mikel Arteta etc), whilst choosing from a pool of support strikers, wingers and flanking forwards to accompany our choice of lone strikers (Robin Van Persie, Sergio Aguero). This would not only open up the possibility of greater variety in our squads, it would make it a hell of lot easier to classify the likes of Michu every season: in many ways, he’s not a striker or a midfielder – he’s a “forward” or an “attacker”.

Without a change and with the 4-4-1-1 variants looking likely to remain in vogue, we’re facing another season where templates will form, while Fantasy game organisers spend the summer pondering what to do with Michu and Fellaini. Don’t force players into Fantasy football positions that fail to reflect their role. Create a new position to reflect their contributions and the changing face of tactics in the Premier League.

One of the objectives of Fantasy games next and every season, should to ensure that as much of the player list remains active. That not only the defensive midfielders have a role to play, but also those players marginalised by the 4-4-1-1 come back into the reckoning. When I make my pre-season Watchlist, I want to consider more players; I want to find value in wingers and support strikers – either through price but, ideally, through the adaptation of the classic positions or the evolution of scoring methods that recognise their contribution – even when deployed as flank attackers.

It’s a major puzzle for those behind the games but, again, those that take time to analyse the impact of the recent tactical trends and hone their game accordingly will surely have an opportunity to future proof their game, whilst increasing their appeal to an audience that is evolving its own tactical nous and appreciation of Premier League football.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

        Agreed.

Mainly due to the fact that there no other options and 2 or 3 or 4 of those boys with a good score would subsidise poor performances of the others.

That's life, reports in the past few days are encouraging, may possibly be a blessing. The timing of the increased parachute payments is good. Insures a lot of the overpaid wasters will be dumped where possible, the wage structure for new players is being revamped, incentive based payments. About time.

My alternative suggestion is to have just 3 categories of player:

    Goalkeepers
Defensive Players (includes all current defenders plus "defensive midfielders")
Attacking Players (includes all current forwards plus "attacking midfielders")

There would need to be some sort of team minimums for each, e.g. the 11 needs to have at least 3 (4?) of each (plus one GK).

Defensive players would get CS points (resolving the fact that defensive mids are currently redundant) and more points for goals

Attacking players would get no CS points and less points for goals

Values would need to be adjusted accordingly.

That increases the problem if anything, cos a new set of midfielders would come to the fore if they get classed as 'defensive'. How would you classify Yaya Toure? And it would marginalise midfielders who are classed as attackers, such as Gerrard or Lampard. And if a player changes position mid season, Sissoko for example came as a defensive mid but is being played up top.

I don't think anything needs to change, just the fpl game needs to be updated once mid-season and have some players positions changed, eg Michu, Podolski...

It would resolve some position dilemmas and create new ones. E.g. there would be no more debate whether Michu, Fellaini, Rooney, etc should be mid or for. However, there would be tough decisions for FPL on players like Yaya. like you say. They could do it by average position on the pitch maybe.

If they give passes and tackles a better weighting in the baps system they can get away without cluttering up the game with additional points here and there. Simplicity is FPL's strength. But picking a formation and team who play in their real life positions would improve the variation in the game drastically. I think it would be fun as well 🙂

i think the problem is the classification of the position of players in the first place but then saying that its an advantage to those who play and study all the time to pick the likes of fellaini and michu or baines or even walters et al. Enrique is a good example, played OOP for a few games and the 'casuals' wont of picked up on this perhaps

The games simplicity is its biggest strength and i think its great they way it is. I do think that the midfield area is a problem because you dont pick the defensive midfielders, if they offered pass completed points or more incentive to pick these players.

    That is all

I'm languishing in 50k place and 50points off the top of the couple of leagues that have a money payout.

So do I go all out on players that aren't the obvious for lot's of differentials e.g. avoid Bale, Michu, ditch RVP & Suarez etc.....

Or as my sensible brain tells me...just go for whichever players will maximise your points.

Mark, I agree with your general points but not sure the game needs a fundamental overhaul. I'm not sure the teams are as template as you suggest-I think the key thing is the statistical spread of the 'active' players i.e. are the spread of scores being compressed or is it taking the same 'distribution'. If it is being squeezed then I think you are correct but I am a reasonably experienced player of the game and am still some way from the top(albeit should finish in the top 10k) so am not sure the picks are that obvious.

That means I transfer out Cazorla for Michu this week; and getting Zabaleta in for Baines before GW36. Thanks guys!

Which two to play next weekend out of:

Clyne (swa), Davies (SOU), Demel (WIG), Zabaleta (tot).

    Thanks.

Yeahh that was my first thought. Can see Swa Sou as a goal galore.

They should reduce the starting capital to 90 instead of 100 would force people to play lower cost players as well

But the choice between which lower cost players would make very little difference - they'd all get 2 points per game and everyone would just get the cheapest ones. We'd be no further forward with widening the pool of players worth owning

    Last question for today (promise).

Things are always changing, but if I had this squad for GW36, have I got things right?

    For 0 hits.

    Robles
    Dawson - Nastasic - Vertonghen
    Bale - Michu - Maloney - Walcott
    Suarez - Berbatov - Kone

de Gea - Fellaini - Sagna - Demel

Not convince about that, only for Sambas first half nightmare QPR wou have beaten them. They were over run in secon half. No Duff or Sidwell. Play like that v Chelsea, there will only be one winner.

    Excellent article. Thank you, Mark.

My first thought is the difficulty in categorizing which players play in which roles. In just these last few days, for instance, we've seen Rooney and Fellaini playing very deep.

Part of the fun is picking the 'oop' players and the risk of getting certain players is they may play negative 'oop'-last year Coleman was a good option, this year not-he had a cracking game as a defender last night but wouldn't have scored well as a midfielder.

Perhaps signings from the Far East have moved beyond mere marketing for clubs. I'll have to pay more to the Bundesliga in future, highlights free on ITV4, plus live games on ESPN (soon to be BTSports), so no excuse.
