Fantasy football is a simple game – in many ways, that remains its strength. While games such as the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) have embroidered the basic foundations of the original Fantasy League game, changes to the trusted formula have been few and far between: when the games do iterate, they do it gradually.

In contrast, Premier League football has shifted dramatically in recent seasons. Tactically, the top-flight teams have adapted shape and formation to the extent that we’re seeing very few take to the field in a traditional 4-4-2, opting instead for an adaptation of 4-4-1-1 or 4-3-3. The lone forward, with flanking attackers or a support striker raiding from just in front of the midfield, is now becoming the norm when Sky reel out their pre-match graphics. This has had several knock-on effects on the roles that players adopt on a weekend and, subsequently their Fantasy output over the season. The question is, are the folk behind our Fantasy games aware of the impact this is having and are they brave enough to adapt accordingly?

For me, the popularity of the 4-5-1 or the 4-4-1-1 and the increased use of the lone striker is the main contributor to the growth of the Fantasy team template. The formation has changed the roles of individuals in the player list, making the key targets obvious and consigning yet another batch of players to limbo status along with defensive midfielders.

With so many teams playing a lone striker, we’re seeing our choice in this position narrowed immediately. A whole swathe of talented forwards such as Lukas Podolski, Kevin Mirallas, Peter Odemwingie and Danny Welbeck are rarely given the opportunity to flourish in a 4-4-2 – instead deployed wide and therefore banished to the cupboard by Fantasy managers, only to be called upon when the fixture list and, in particular, double Gameweeks, add to their limited attraction.

In addition, the midfield pool is also narrowed as a result of the growth of the support striker. Players such as Michu, Marouane Fellaini and Kevin Nolan emerge as obvious targets that are available for midfield prices but are thrust into the attack and capable of earning profits to surpass the majority of strikers on offer, let alone wingers.

So both the forward and midfield talent pools become smaller. In the FPL, we find ourselves picking from a cast of around 15 players to fill eight slots. Budget and mid-price options supplement this and rise and fall in popularity but, basically, as the 4-4-1-1 has flourished, we’ve seen obvious targets emerge to reduce the variety on show within our teams and leagues.

I’ve spoken before on how I see an additional attacking midfielder position or perhaps just a new “attacker” or “forward” position to complement the “strikers”. This fifth pool of players would incorporate the likes of Michu and Mirallas, forcing us to sign traditional midfielders in our midfield (Mousa Dembele, Mikel Arteta etc), whilst choosing from a pool of support strikers, wingers and flanking forwards to accompany our choice of lone strikers (Robin Van Persie, Sergio Aguero). This would not only open up the possibility of greater variety in our squads, it would make it a hell of lot easier to classify the likes of Michu every season: in many ways, he’s not a striker or a midfielder – he’s a “forward” or an “attacker”.

Without a change and with the 4-4-1-1 variants looking likely to remain in vogue, we’re facing another season where templates will form, while Fantasy game organisers spend the summer pondering what to do with Michu and Fellaini. Don’t force players into Fantasy football positions that fail to reflect their role. Create a new position to reflect their contributions and the changing face of tactics in the Premier League.

One of the objectives of Fantasy games next and every season, should to ensure that as much of the player list remains active. That not only the defensive midfielders have a role to play, but also those players marginalised by the 4-4-1-1 come back into the reckoning. When I make my pre-season Watchlist, I want to consider more players; I want to find value in wingers and support strikers – either through price but, ideally, through the adaptation of the classic positions or the evolution of scoring methods that recognise their contribution – even when deployed as flank attackers.

It’s a major puzzle for those behind the games but, again, those that take time to analyse the impact of the recent tactical trends and hone their game accordingly will surely have an opportunity to future proof their game, whilst increasing their appeal to an audience that is evolving its own tactical nous and appreciation of Premier League football.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Enrique played a few games on the left wing, what if someone does the same for the last 5 or 6 games of the season, would they become a midf?

i know but just trying to re-iterate how tricky it already is for FPL, so more player categories becomes a headache and would put people off imo

Wilfully missing the point. Supersonic, you've hit the nail on the head - you can't create one new category without raising more questions. The population of this new 'forwards' group would be tiny, and there are a handful of attacking defenders that could justifiably be in a category of their own. The game is fine as it is - there is still no 'template' team, at least no worse than previous seasons. Defensive midfielders never score points and the system can't be warped to suit them without making the points system complicated.

Yahoo sports Fantasy Football used to deduct 0.03 pts every time a player gave the ball away. Ridiculous.

There will always be the OOP's, but there are max two viable oop options at any one time. So that makes ~2/15 spots pretty much the same in all teams.

Mark is talking about how 8 of the remaining 13 spots are restricted to a tiny proportion of the player base with fpl having a lot of advance warning of such.

One way to address the imbalances without making the system *appear* any

more complicated (simplicity being a major selling point) would be to

revamp the BP system and give out points to all players reaching certain

statistical threasholds rather than just the top 3 per game. This way you

could tweak and taylor it season by season to address the imbalances. First

off you remove everything that the game already rewards (goals etc) from

the BP system, then you increase the value of stats that are currently

undervalued e.g. tackles, saves. Add up all those stats into an index

similar to ICT and hand out the points to everyone who attains certain

    threshold scores.

Was just going to post something similar. Adopting a scoring system like that used in the Metro game (for example) and simply reducing the over-emphasis on goals/clean sheets, crediting other aspects of the game, nullifying the needs for bonuses.

I'd be very happy with a system like this, but with the proviso that FPL tested the system for a whole season and made all the necessary tweaks and released it for the season after next.

It could kill the game if they screwed it all up (which lets face it FPL are prone to doing) and John Obi Mikel or Lucas Leiva was the highest scoring player in the game 😕

yeah but then why are goals not rewarded? If you buy a player and he scores you want a say in the baps because that's why we love the game. You effectively ruin the game if you make it more boring. Oh and saves ARE valued...you get 1 point for each 3 you make.

          This should work ok then.

The only slight risk is that if you start rewarding too much, then it doesn't matter as much which players you pick. Provided your man plays and is quite good then you have a good chance of 4-5 points minimum. Risk of 2 pointers is ultimately what makes the game unpredictable and fun.

Then there's the risk that no one attains it and so no bonus points awarded, especially in games between 2 lower teams.

    Goals in 2014:
    Defenders 6pts
Midfielders 6pts (i.e. an Arteta goal equal to a Baines goal)

I have solved the bonus system.

Firstly, have a table format similar to this:

    http://formidablepro.com/wp-content/uploads/helpdesk/form.png

It would record the amount of times each player does something that is worthy of a point, fully transparent to all.

Secondly, the man in the stand would rate the top 3 players on the pitch, for example, the best player gets 10 points added to the PPI-type grading, the second best player gets 7 points added etc etc

Then the overall top 3 highest scoring players get awarded the bonus points.

    Problem solved.

    I am genius 😎

@Roscola, my issue with your idea on baps is that if it rewards the likes of Carrick/Arteta each week consistently then it de-values goals and assists. Which can sometimes be fine because there are jammy goals and assists. But if baps are always directed at the industrious CM type player then every week all they need to do is show up to be rewarded 3 bonus points (because Carrick and Arteta for instance are almost always top of the passing charts and interceptions/recovered ball charts)

I can understand that it seems unreasonable to never award players for these kind of things but if they are literally doing it week in week out, then why would I bother with a Michu when I can get 5/6 points off Arteta/Carrick on a weekly basis? And they don't even have to do anything extraordinary, just pass the most and do their normal job.

Yeah but that's the point...The game will only ever be balanced if FPL players are able to consider 5-3-2 or 5-4-1 options as viable alternatives to 3-4-3...It's exactly that point that would open the game up....As we stand I think most FPL players would play a 1-0-5-5 formation if they could..

I don't see that as a problem. You create some players who reliably get 5/6 points every week. As a manager, you have to decide whether you want to stick with that relative certainty or gamble on the players who might score a goal or two and earn more. Right there you've created two different winnable styles of play and doubled the pool of viable players, creating a wider variety of teams.

As long as the pricing system is done right, you make both ways of winning

    Reposting from the previosus page:

Regarding the effect of the old vs new bonus systems, under the old system you’d have players who got attacking points and boni (who were sweet), players who got attacking points but few boni, and players who got boni but few attacking points. Now all you have is players who get attacking points and consequently boni, which massively cuts your options.

The easiest obvious example is defenders. It used to be a perfectly acceptable tactic to pick and play someone like Lescott or Dunne purely because they regularly got boni, rather than only for clean sheets.

The other effect of the current system is that it creates much more of a lottery. A goal for a midfielder is now often worth 8 pts (including the boni) rather than 5, meaning that the game is much more hit and miss and prone to luck.

About the only possitive thing that can be said for it is that strikers now get the points that their prices deserve, as opposed to the game being dominated by big name mids, but that could easily be rectified by making all goals worth the same regardless of position.

I have no really problem with the present bonus system. However, using last nights game as an example of when it fails, and it has nothing to do with missing out, good luck to those who benefited, I cannot for the life of me see where Sagna and Arteta achieved baps from their performances.I also disagree with shots hitting the post being registered as a shot off target. It should be neither imo, a player should not be rewared or punished for it. Just add or deduct nothing.

Good article Mark...and agreed...It's been great that the past two weeks, leading up to the DGW33, has seen a far more diverse range of players brought in...not enough but at least an improvement. As far as i'm aware I am the only regular poster on here who has stuck with a back to front team all season..which may seem odd but should actually diverse teams should be an option within the game for all players...The more players that are brought into the game through the mechanics of the mathematics employed by FPL the better as far as i'm concerned.

I think you can arrange the comments by varying factors like rating, time posted (as it is now) etc.

The stickies I think are like on the homepage or right hand side of the screen and aren't tailored. I don't think that's bad even if you disagree with the community as it would have the same visual impact as the season ticker I imagine.

This information isn't definitely accurate but it's what I have in my memory as to how Homecrowd was described.

Just thinking off the top of my head here...maybe a change could be made so that at the points refresh after games, players are shunted to the positions they actually played in. So if Fellaini, though classified as a mid, played 90 mins up front, he lines up alongside your strikers and scores points according to that new position. Although this would flag up OOP players to the masses...I don't know I didn't think this through!

Maybe only for 1 game, and as Reedy has said a CS would be rewarded with 4 points instead of 1 and a goal would get you 6 points instead of 5, so he plays in his natural position for 60 mins and scores 2 goals. As a captained mid that equals 20 points + 8 for appearances, 4 for CS + BPs so lets's say 38 points assuming 3 BPs

As a defender that would become 24 points for goals + 8 for appearances + 16 for CS + BPS = 52 points

I think the 5-5-3 is fine. Michu and bale are the only two mids that should be changed to forwards next season as their role is that of a goalscorer and they play right up.
The key to handicapping the more attack minded mids is pricing them accordingly, not messing with the classifications and formations.
The only big changes I want is undoing previous misconceived changes like og deductions and stats based bps

I think the World Cup game had it spot on with the recovered/attacking points and wish that they would be included in FPL.

I've probably only picked about 9/10 players in MF this season and yet there is probably a 100 more I could choose but don't offer anything to the game for me to put them in my team so why am I going to?

Fellaini would have been regarded as a defensive midfielder at the start of the season and nobody knew who michu was! its easy looking back in hindsight! and at the start of the season hazard was playing in behind torres even tho now he plays as a winger? so where does he go? just leave it as it is, some players benefit from being OOP but if you make more positions than there will be more trouble with OOP then there is now

Hang on also, we knew who Michu was. A CAM who scored 15 goals last season at Rayo Vallecano .

Hazard would have have been a forward, and may have lost appeal when moved further back.

Fellaini would have been a definite OOP, but thats just one player.

bale's new position would mean he is now in this position, or is he? it wont work

well incorrectly classified players leads to an even bigger template does it not? I don't see the major dilema atm, in an ideal game we would have an extra position for players like michu but i can't see it working and imo it will only cause more chaos

Come on RVP, if you get at least a goal tonight, the 10 games without a goal will all be be forgiven and forgotten.

Feel that this really misses the point. Because it's not just the classification of these players that is getting them points. It's the fact that they are doing a lot more things that warrant points, like scoring goals, than any other players.

Also the mention of Nolan seems strange at this point.

Having looked at a lot of comments on here, i think the simplest way to cut out templates is to adjust the price system. If pricing makes it near impossible to field 15 whilst having RVP, Bale, Suarez, Mata, Baines etc. then people will be forced to diversify a lot more.

Some will opt to go with 6 heavy hitters and 9 crap players
Some will opt to go with 3 heavy hitters 6 medium hitters and 6 crap players
Some will opt to go with 1 heavy hitter and 9 medium hitters 4 crap players

+1 rack the prices up big time so that its a struggle to make a team. I have always been in favour of that option.

Also they need to price more appropriately, accounting for expected position in their initial prices.

I hope so for the sake of both him and them...Sometimes a player just finds the right place for themselves at the right time...this is one such case...

How about Rooney in his forward then midfield then forward role?

What would the system have to say about that?
