On a disappointing day of tepid football, it took a deflected effort from Juan Mata to break the deadlock and provide our only goal, as Chelsea earned a precious three points at Old Trafford following the goalless Merseyside derby. Here’s the Stock Check from Sunday’s two matches…

On the Up

Juan Mata
The Spaniard’s deflected shot earned him the assist for Chelsea’s winner, with both Opta and the Press Association awarding Sunday’s decisive strike as a Phil Jones own goal. Despite that, Mata’s assist means that he has now returned in his last four league outings going into Wednesday’s crunch clash with Spurs. Mata now has a staggering 18 assists this season.

The Chelsea Defence
Today’s clean sheet was the third in four matches earned by the Chelsea rearguard. It’s notable that David Luiz is the only defender to line up in all those matches, as Rafa Benitez’s rotation policy continues to make it almost impossible to nail down a regular starter beyond the versatile Brazilian. It remains to be seen if Rafa’s defence can resist the form of Gareth Bale in midweek.

The Liverpool Defence
While Brendan Rodgers’ side were fortunate to keep their sheet clean, Liverpool have now earned four shut-outs in their last five to reward those who had kept faith with the likes of Jose Enrique and Glen Johnson.

The Everton Defence
David Moyes’ rearguard has been even more impressive. Today’s goalless draw ensured that Everton have conceded just a single goal in their last five league outings, with six clean sheets in their last eight. Having gone much of the season without defensive returns, Leighton Baines has enjoyed a major spurt as a defensive asset, repaying the faith without contributing attacking returns. Remarkably, in Everton’s strong defensive spell, Baines has returned just a single assist.

Going Down

Rafael
A straight red for violent conduct will rule the young Brazilian out of United’s remaining two matches and the opener for next season. Rafael’s absence will surely cement Phil Jones start for the final two fixtures, with the former Blackburn man likely to shift to right-back should Sir Alex Ferguson opt to move Jones from central defence or midfield; Chris Smalling is the other option available.

Eden Hazard
The Belgian was removed by Rafa Benitez in the midweek Europa League tie, with the Chelsea boss remarking that this was as a “precaution”. Hazard was, however, unable to take his place in today’s matchday squad due to a tight calf, to disappoint those who invested in his talents for the double Gameweek. Chelsea, and his Fantasy owners will be hoping for a return against Spurs on Wednesday.

Robin Van Persie
With Sir Alex Ferguson shuffling his pack to give starts to some second string players, United failed to spark and, although Van Persie had opportunities, there will now be some concern that he may struggle to maintain his recent rate of scoring in a team that could canter to the finish line with matches against West Brom and Swansea.

David De Gea
Dropped to the bench to allow Anders Lindegaard to earn a rare start, De Gea’s owners will now be on alert and pondering whether their man will be handed the two starts that remain. With issues elsewhere in our squads following the injury to Michu, De Gea’s absence today has provided an unwelcome and untimely poser for some.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      Deshorn Brown is probably the best pick. Diego Fagundez and Adam Jahn are also decent bets.

        Eh, stay away from too many forwards in MLS game. The point system is really bizarre and is highly rewarding to Defenders. Look at all the top players in the game, they're running 4-5 defenders out there. One guy was playing a 5-4-1!

        Get Keane when he's healthy (or Henry) and supplement with Earnshaw or McIerney. Leave it at that.

          having only played for 10 weeks I can clearly see the falloff in pts for the fwds

          highest scoring at each position thus far:

          Keeper - 58
          Def - 77
          Mid - 76
          Fwd - 48

          ^This. It is best to only play with one forward. Sometimes bye weeks and injuries force your hand, but you just have to deal with that. Also, never bring in anyone who is non-playing just because they are cheap. You're definitely going to need a full bench.

    3 concerns for my team, Pog (useless), Michu (out) & DDG (rotation, 3.9 keeper)

    (A) Pog -> Sturridge
    (B) Michu -> Coutinho
    (C) DDG -> Reina/Jaas

    Which 2 to do? For a hit though.

    Evening. Quick update on the Deadzone Bracketology Tournament -- the Final Four is almost set as the incredible run of Matt Jarvis continues, Leighton Baines reasserts his supremacy, and Rickie Lambert's shockingly poor run of form still has not sent him out of the competition. Only one spot remains, as Carlos Tevez will have to do the businessin order to overcome darkhorse Bryan Ruiz and his scintillating performance as the underdog.

        So f* cking what. We are talking centimetres here.

        An own goal used to be given only when a shot / cross was going near the goal and then diverted in.

      oh dear.
      essentially an own goal is a goal only made possible by the player defending the goal. if it wasn't for jones the ball doesn't go in the net, hence it's an own goal.

          logic, mata hits it with the inside of his left foot.
          all that matter is if it doen't hit jones it's a goal kick. if you have a problem with the rule fair enough, that' a different arguement. just be aware that this current interpretation of the rule ha been around for years now and when the dubious golas penel review it they'll confirm the OG

              my bad, typing in the dark here.
              i don't see that there's any doubt. the balls goes in off the post, which means it only just sneaks in despite being deflected towards goal by jones. as to whether it would have curled in without the deflection the way mata hits it, and the distance he is from goal (further you are away the more time the ball has to curl etc) both make that impossible.

        Well.. I simply don't agree the ball would have "clearly not gone in". It hits the bottom of Jones thigh and alters the spin considerably ( not just the inside of his calf). I don't really care as i've already wrapped up my mini leagues, i just think thats gotta be one of the closest ogs i've seen awarded here, and in fact i've seen people be credited with goals that were even worse shots than that one.

      Leading my ML by 28 points so still a bit tight..
      Was thinking Clark + michu >> Dawson + fellaini (-4)..bench Maloney
      And then berbs >> sturridge in gw38 and bench fellaini

      Could always downgrade one of augero/Tevez to fund michu >> caz

    Evening folks. Xristos Anesti!!

    Happy Orthodox Easter to all.

    How is everyone doing this DGW so far?

    I'm not complaining with 68(-4), but some scores I saw earlier made my score laughable 😯

          actually, being agnostic makes one feel absolutely minute and insignificant in light of the vastness of the unknown. Pretending our ancestors had it all figured out 5000 years ago and turning off the logic switch in our heads ...that's the side here that is inflating themselves.
