The latest addition to our members area is almost ready to go live. The “Key Performance Indicator” tables or “KPI” tables for short, are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or change in performance in players.

For a while now we’ve been looking for a method of using our data to enable our members to assess player form – or at least track some key statistics that can be identified as indicators of form that may influence future Fantasy Football output, whilst also going some way to explain a recent rise or decline.

Firstly, we created tables that track the frequency of key stats or match events which indicate player performance such as “Minutes per shot on target” or “Minutes per touch in the box”. We’ve also included defensive indicators so that users who play Fantasy games where defensive actions come into play – (like Sky Sports and Play On) – can get further guidance from the tables. Indeed, stats such as “Minutes per Block” and “Minutes per Clearance” will immediately help those looking to identify defenders who are set to fare well in the new Fantasy Premier League bonus system.

All these statistics are useful in themselves when you consider that you can sort on any stat and slice the data by a Gameweek range or by home and away matches. However, the key ingredient we’ve added is the ability to create a second comparison table in the background and view tabular results that track the percentage change between the two tables. In this way, we can begin to get values that indicate form or perhaps a change in role and position. What you’ll get are results such as…

“Michu’s frequency of shots in the box increased by 23% when he played at home”

or even…

“Michu’s frequency of shots on target reduced by 38% over the final eight Gameweeks compared to the Gameweeks 1-30.”

These tables and this ability to compare frequency data can be used in a multitude of ways in order to find trends and provide quantitative data on queries such as:

  • Which players improved the most for the key indicators from the 2011/12 season?
  • Which players suffered the biggest decline in the key indicators away from home compared to home matches?
  • Just how much did Juan Mata decline in the key attacking indicators over the last eight Gameweeks compared to the rest of his season?
  • Which of the Chelsea midfield showed improvement over the same window?
  • How was Robin Van Persie’s key indicators affected by Wayne Rooney’s omission from United’s lineup?

Our members will be able to use the numbers produced to help them assess how a change in position affected a player, or even just to study which players, over the “last four Gameweeks”, have improved the most over the key indicators, since last season or earlier in the year. From now on, when we think Michu has dropped off in form, we can check and get percentage values for key stats to assess whether this is really the case and, at the same time, assess if any of his team-mates have benefited.

We’ll be using the KPI tables to generate new members articles and to add further analysis to our regular members articles. We’ll be rolling out our first members article, inspired by the new KPI data, later this week to help guide your initial squad selection.

For now, take a look at the preview movie below to see the tables in action. We hope to have the KPI tables available in our Members Area later this week.

Ah it's good to be back in business!

One of the things I love about this early tinkering is how the whole universe gets re-written every few hours. You can spend half an hour wrestling with the problem of how to squeeze in, say, RVP AND Bale, or how you can have 3 DGWers and still field a decent team for GW3, and when you solve it you confirm the transfers and feel like you're ready for the season to start. Then suddenly a single post--maybe about one of your selections being a yellow-card magnet, or having his playing time threatened by a possible signing--brings the whole thing crashing down and you go back to the drawing board. Or sometimes it doesn't even need a post: you realise while you're having your afternoon constitutional that you don't HAVE to have three DGWers if it's going to cost you a hit to sort them out afterwards, and your whole morning's work is wasted.

Did I say "whole morning"? Of course I didn't spend the whole morning tinkering with my fantasy team before we even know if there will BE a DGW . . . just hyperbole . . . 😉

No I've gone for Collins at 4.5.

Saw someone mention he made a lot of mistakes last season but he still managed 2500 minutes and I can't remember him being benched (bar injury) once.

Plus Rat has competition from Demel, O'Brien and McCartney for the full back slots. Reid is nailed on so only Tomkins really challenging Collins, and I can't see him replacing Collins

Thoughts on Santi Cazorla VS Walcott?

This new BPS system favors Santi, and his key stats other than pure threat (goal attempts, goals, shots etc.) beats out Walcott.

Guys, re: my post on the previous page

I agree some things look dodgy, but I haven't worked them out

All I did was go to the transfers page, go to the club of a player, eg Lambert, look at total score, then change the filter to Bonus Points System, which, as far as I can tell calculates how a player would have done last season under this new system.

See for yourselves, Vertonghen is ridiculous

Those figures have nothing to do with points totals - those are the figures which would have been used to calculate the bonus points. Do the same filter but with PPI (the measure for bonus points last season) - it's the same principle.

So I thought it would be interesting to see what the difference in points that each position brings in is.

I have taken the top 25 players, from last year, in each position by points scored. I then added all of their Points and Minutes Played together. I have then divided the points by the minutes played and multiplied by 90 to give an average over a 90 minute game.

    Top 25---------------Points Last Year--------Minutes Played----------Average Points per 90mins
    Goalkeepers-------------2201-------------------------54505---------------------------3.634345473
    Defenders-----------------3120------------------------73179-----------------------------3.8371664
    Midfielders----------------3907------------------------70074----------------------------5.017980992
    Forwards------------------3483-------------------------59929---------------------------5.230689649

Now this doesn't show a great deal seeing as how Goalkeepers and Defenders are generally cheaper than Midfielders and Forwards and so even though they bring in less points they may actually be better value when relating these points to their price.

So I took the average cost of these 25 players and divided the Average points per 90 minutes by this cost, effectively showing their points per 90 in relation to their cost.

    Top 25---------------Average Cost------Average Points per 90mins----------Value
    Goalkeepers------------£5.12--------------------3.634345473-------------------0.709833
    Defenders----------------£5.82----------------------3.8371664--------------------0.659307
    Midfielders---------------£7.96--------------------5.017980992-------------------0.630400
    Forwards-----------------£8.24---------------------5.230689649-------------------0.634792

From this you can see that Goalkeepers and Defenders actually bring in more points for their value than Midfielders and Forwards do.

May put off some people going for those uber cheap defenders and goalkeepers.

For what its worth I won't be investing alot in my GKs and Defense but neither will I be going uber cheap.

You say it was from the top 25. Obviously that doesn't take into account a comparison between cheap defenders/GK's and expensive defenders/GK's. So how can you make a distinction between the two when say that it might put people off the ubers?

Any news on Kaboul vs Dawson?

Tottenham has some really nice opening fixtures. Really want to have a defensive coverage from them but need someone cheap.

Or should I just play it safe and get the Coleman - Collins - Turner (Norwich) combo? (Have Boruc as my Soton coverage)

    Boruc - 4.0
    Kaboul - Coleman - Collins - Amorebieta (?) - 4.0
    Bale - Hazard - Walcott - Snoddie - Kacaniklic
    Aguero - Sturridge - JRod

    Thoughts?

    Cazorla or Walcott?
Caz is a better all around player, but in FPL scores in streaks. I think the new Bonus rules favor him, but Theo scored way more per minutes played last year. Thoughts?

Cazorla is explosive so I dont think his baps will improve. If he had steady returns he'd get buckets more baps!! Wally for me 🙂

I quite like mignolet. Rotation pretty good in for 18/20 first GWs but many want the perfect rotation; however this doesn’t always equate to clean sheets, not by a long way!

Not sure if it's been mentioned already, probably has, but *if Robles nails down no 1 spot for Everton, and Liverpool have a definite no 1 (either Reina or Mignolet), you have a perfectly rotating pair of Merseyside GKs for 10m. That's pretty cheap considering it will cost 9m to Rotate Hull and Palace!!!

Don't know how nailed on he will be. We're still going to sign more.

Bar Gerrard, Coutinho and Sturridge, I wouldn't be signing anyone in the Liverpool attack just yet.

With possible moves for Bernard and Eriksen in the offing, wouldn't touch him.

Is anyone else seriously confused on how defenders have racked up such high returns on the new bonus point system, had thought it was adverse against them

I like it. Planning to adapt if there is a DGW GW1? Also, I am going for RVP along with Bale unless preseason action and non-signings makes it look like a Aguero will be the main man up front.
