The latest addition to our members area is almost ready to go live. The “Key Performance Indicator” tables or “KPI” tables for short, are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or change in performance in players.

For a while now we’ve been looking for a method of using our data to enable our members to assess player form – or at least track some key statistics that can be identified as indicators of form that may influence future Fantasy Football output, whilst also going some way to explain a recent rise or decline.

Firstly, we created tables that track the frequency of key stats or match events which indicate player performance such as “Minutes per shot on target” or “Minutes per touch in the box”. We’ve also included defensive indicators so that users who play Fantasy games where defensive actions come into play – (like Sky Sports and Play On) – can get further guidance from the tables. Indeed, stats such as “Minutes per Block” and “Minutes per Clearance” will immediately help those looking to identify defenders who are set to fare well in the new Fantasy Premier League bonus system.

All these statistics are useful in themselves when you consider that you can sort on any stat and slice the data by a Gameweek range or by home and away matches. However, the key ingredient we’ve added is the ability to create a second comparison table in the background and view tabular results that track the percentage change between the two tables. In this way, we can begin to get values that indicate form or perhaps a change in role and position. What you’ll get are results such as…

“Michu’s frequency of shots in the box increased by 23% when he played at home”

or even…

“Michu’s frequency of shots on target reduced by 38% over the final eight Gameweeks compared to the Gameweeks 1-30.”

These tables and this ability to compare frequency data can be used in a multitude of ways in order to find trends and provide quantitative data on queries such as:

  • Which players improved the most for the key indicators from the 2011/12 season?
  • Which players suffered the biggest decline in the key indicators away from home compared to home matches?
  • Just how much did Juan Mata decline in the key attacking indicators over the last eight Gameweeks compared to the rest of his season?
  • Which of the Chelsea midfield showed improvement over the same window?
  • How was Robin Van Persie’s key indicators affected by Wayne Rooney’s omission from United’s lineup?

Our members will be able to use the numbers produced to help them assess how a change in position affected a player, or even just to study which players, over the “last four Gameweeks”, have improved the most over the key indicators, since last season or earlier in the year. From now on, when we think Michu has dropped off in form, we can check and get percentage values for key stats to assess whether this is really the case and, at the same time, assess if any of his team-mates have benefited.

We’ll be using the KPI tables to generate new members articles and to add further analysis to our regular members articles. We’ll be rolling out our first members article, inspired by the new KPI data, later this week to help guide your initial squad selection.

For now, take a look at the preview movie below to see the tables in action. We hope to have the KPI tables available in our Members Area later this week.

City and Arsenal have great opening fixtures...but if you had to choose between Wally or Silva, who'd it be?

Arsenal usually start the season well before they collapse, whereas Pellegrini's formation etc could take few games to settle even after pre season.

agree, overlooked the couple of blanks last season. how could i forget how smug i was as a united fan.

interesting to note that the past 2 summers were filled with rumours of key players leaving. perhaps that had a knockover effect on confidence? No such thing this season though...key players staying and good names linked with the gunners.

Could get them off the ground running if a big transfer is confirmed before kickoff?

what i meant was Arsenal start the first 5-7 games well, still in touch with the leaders with high hopes. and then suffer a mid season collapse amidst all the pressure, out of cups, out of league contention etc...and finally yes, eventually recover with almost nothing else to play for.

People seem keen on the light defense, but sometimes, just 1.5m in defense can make all the difference. Look at this:

    Vorm, Marshall
    Luiz, Zabaleta, Coleman, Shaw, Ward
    Bale, Hazard, Walcott, Snodgrass, Thomas
    Sturridge, Carroll, Rodriguez

I think if you have Zabaleta and Luiz, you may as well have a 4.5 for Coleman or a 4.0 for Shaw.

But who would you get? Aguero just doesn't appeal to me at 11.0.

Silva is the next best pick then, but Snodgrass is value and provides mid-price options. Carroll can be swapped for Dzeko if there are starts to be had too.

Lots of expectation on Everton playing 3-4-3. I read an interview with Martinez recently were he talks of his preference for 4-3-3. Everton have played one friendly so far, in which they played 4-3-3. Can't see Coleman being an oop at this stage.

Although it depends on when you intended to play him. Boruc/Foster rotate so I dunno if you'd want 2 saints defenders in the XI at the same time? Or would you play Clyne in the weeks that you played Foster in goal?

Looking at the array of RMTs which are springing up everywhere, a key issue seems a mid price midfielder. The three main choices are Snodgrass, Mirallas and Nolan. Looking at last year's stats I calculated points per minute( PPG would be unfair in Mirallas due to sub appearances):
Nolan: 0.050016. Nolan scored 149 points from 2979
Snodgrass: 0.049836. Snod picked up 152 points from 3050 mins
Mirallas: Here it gets interesting. He picked up 96 from 1827 mins giving a score of 0.052545.

So Mirallas seems to have slightly more points, but not by much. At this point, I hear you mutter resignedly ' but Mirallas was a forward!' If we add on the extra points he would have got from CSs and the extra goal scores, he gets 110 from 1827, giving a score of 0.060208.

So..... Mirallas clearly offers the best score here, but he's a whole million more. However, I still think that if he stays fit, he can turn the promise he showed in his debut BPL campaign into serious pointage. Discuss.

    How's this for a front 7:

    Bale Hazard Walcott Silva
    Sturridge Carroll Lambert

    Thomas as the cheapie 5th.

Very nice, though I'd like to see your defense to get a complete view of the team. Think Studge is over priced at 9m personally...I'm going with Aspas myself.

Not good to start the season. However some real value in a lot of 4.5m defenders this year to make it worthwhile.

Last year, the essential big players, i.e. those who significantly outscored others in their categories or were exceptional value, were RVP, Suarez, Bale, Michu and Fellaini.

Everyone else was for the most part, interchangeable. Just something to consider when you're selecting a squad for the coming season. We knew about those players in pre season or early into the season as well, so it was not shots out of the dark.

Personally I reckon RVP, Bale and Suarez (if he stays) will replicate last year's form. Apart from them, I think Hazard is the most likely to hit those kind of figures. Maybe Aguero. Budget option wise, ala your Michu or Fellaini, i'm tipping Ramirez, Ben Arfa and Nani as the players who currently have the potential to become essentials.

He is a quality keeper, he played basically a full season at Hull one half of one season and half of another. Captained at U21 level for Italy. Has UEFA Champions league experience. And for a small brief time was Arsenal number 1 keep due to injuries within the team. Compare this to Westwood..... should be a no brainer, who would you pick if PDC?

Not 100% convinced on Coleman, but with Mirallas you aren't going to get an Arsenal/City player capable of his returns for 7.5

For 0.5 extra though, you could have Kosc/Nastasic over Coleman which I'd probably prefer.

    Hi Michael,

The season opener against Cardiff City is on sale today to Members giving you priority access to tickets to see the Hammers back in Premier League action. Andy Carroll could make his first appearance in claret and blue since returning on a permanent deal along with another new signing and Romania Captain, Razvan Rat.

First positive thing that I have heard about Carroll.
