Cardiff boss Malky Mackay bolstered his central midfield options last weekend by acquiring Gary Medel from Sevilla on a four-year deal. The 26-year-old Chile international arrives at the Bluebirds for a reported club record fee of £9.5m and follows the likes of Steven Caulker, John Brayford and Andreas Cornelius to the club as Mackay goes about restructuring his first-team squad after last term’s Championship-winning season:

Having missed out on top targets Victor Wanyama and Etienne Capoue, Mackay has turned to the combative Medel – whose nickname is “El Pitbull” – in order to add a little bite to his midfield. Due to international duties, the new boy won’t join up with Cardiff until Friday, leaving Mackay with a selection dilemma ahead of the following day’s opener at West Ham, though speaking to the club’s official website, the Bluebirds boss was full of praise for his new enforcer:

“We’re delighted to have secured the services of Gary – a tenacious and intelligent international midfielder. Having had two seasons of regular football in La Liga – with 60 odd international caps to his name and three appearances at a World Cup – his experience will be an invaluable asset to our squad. He’s played in a number of Boca v River Plate derbies in Argentina – one of the world’s biggest derby matches – and I’ve no doubt that his background and pedigree will complement our midfield group in the Barclays Premier League.”

The History

A product of the Universidad Católica youth system in his native Chile, Medel’s career began back in 2006. Over the course of three seasons, he scored 10 times in 70 league matches before joining Argentine giants Boca Juniors in July 2009. Having arrived on an initial one-year loan, Medel spent two seasons at the club, producing seven goals and an assist in 46 appearances prior to making his way to Sevilla midway through the 2010-11 campaign.

Medel more than merited his nickname during his time in La Liga, suggesting his discipline may well be an issue on these shores. The Chilean featured 90 times in all competitions for Sevilla and was dismissed on as many as seven occasions, receiving 29 cautions in just 78 league appearances. Over his first year-and-a-half he scored just twice in 46 matches but stepped up as an attacking source last term, with six goals and three assists in 32 La Liga matches. The powerfully-built ball-winner has also turned out for his country 51 times and found the net on four occasions.

The Prospects

Set to sit in front of the Bluebirds’ defence as part of Mackay’s three-man central midfield, Medel will be tasked with breaking up opponents’ play and allowing other more creative players the chance to flourish. Given his hot-headed approach, he’s likely to rack up more yellows and reds than attacking returns in the season ahead and, as such, it’s difficult to make a case for his consideration as a Fantasy asset; expect to see him feature prominently in our Suspension Tightrope articles as the campaign heats up instead.

The possible upside is that his tenacious style of play, allied with the acquisition of Steven Caulker, may boost Cardiff’s defensive prospects as Mackay attempts to build upon an approach which harvested 18 clean sheets in the Championship last time out.

Compared to other Bluebirds options, though, Medel’s appeal seems limited – Fantasy managers looking for a route into Mackay’s side will perhaps turn to Bo-Kyung Kim as a more enticing alternative. Likely to be utilised as the most advanced option through the middle, it’s difficult to look beyond the Korean – having scored in three of the final four summer friendlies, he approaches the season as the Welsh side’s in-form player, with a share of set-pieces making him a standout option. A kind price across the Fantasy games merely heightens Kim’s appeal, with many eyeing him up as a cheap fifth midfielder.

While Kim is likely to provide the class and guile in the middle of the park, Medel will no doubt grab his fair share of headlines. Sent off in a derby against Real Betis last term, he was also dismissed against Atletico Madrid after belting Diego Costa – having previously broken the arm of Tiago Mendes earlier in the match. Fireworks can be expected, then, and, while there’s no doubting Medel will add plenty resilience to the middle of the park, Mackay will be hoping his new signing keeps a cool head long enough to make an impact for all the right reasons. Most Fantasy managers are likely to keep their distance.

    Long post incoming.

Have had RVP in all my drafts thus far.

    team#1) My almost final team:
    boruc foster
    cole ward chester murner mbiwa
    miralas wally hazard lallana koren
    lukaku rvp dzeko

Thoughts? I think its a pretty decent team. Only improvement i can see finding a better rotating pair then lallana and koren.

team#2) Contemplating the idea of moving to a non-RVP team and then bring him in
    boruc foster
    cole ward chester murner mbiwa
    miralas wally hazard coutinho* koren
    lukaku soldado benteke*

Gw2: cole + lukaku >> dawson + lambert (spurs and saints have a good fixture)
    Gw3: hazard >> sissoko/j.morrison (both newcastle/wba have a good fixture)
    Gw4: benteke >> RVP

i GENUINELY think this is a decent option.

    Pros:
    - bring in rvp when from gw4 when the hard fixtures are over
    - strategy leaves 0.5m over
    - 4 dgw players

    Cons:
    - hazard and benteke prices may have dropped by gw3 and 4 hence need some funds itb
    - less flexibility as transfers are outlined and we all know things never pan out in the fantasy world as planned

Thoughts? put a lot of thought into this as i never played around with a non-rvp team

i'm not starting with RVP, plan to FT him in by GW3 but will WC if necessary
i'm concerned about such a cheap defense, a few injuries/rotations and they'll be bringing in 5 points between them each week
beware sissoko he may be playing deep this season, same with morrison

Has the Mannone vs Westwood conundrum been resolved? I haven't been paying attention as I have no intention of getting either in FPL but I'm putting together a draft PlayOn team and they're both dirt cheap so if one of them is winning the race I might be tempted to take a punt...

People on here are saying Mannone is favourite but this is actually based on nothing. Sunderland fans and their forums suggest that Westwood will start in GW1.

Regardless, even if the forums/fans have more credibility than random people on here, it would seem best to stay away for now.

Most options falling by the wayside, Barkley IF Gibson's injury is a bad one.

For me it is really worth spending the extra 0.5m to get in Kim with Cardiff spending and looking good and a nailed on attacking option with some set pieces too.

Cardiff have played vs Newport County this afternoon and ran out 4-0 winners. Very much a second string side today, which included Brayford and Hudson as the two surprise inclusions. Makes me wonder if Connolly will get the rightback slot this weekend, partly to cope with West Ham's physical presence in the air. Into the future, I would still expect Brayford to be the rightback of choice.

Random but is anyone working in the IT sector here? Need some advice... I've tried looking online for more information, but the only reviews of this course are positive and seem to be exactly the same reviews shown on the company website, hmmmm.

    Is this a scam? http://www.justit.co.uk//it_training/personal-training/networking-Jobs/fulltime

Altogether, the course cost around £6k, if you are excepted, you'd have to pay around 2k upfront minimum as a deposit. My worry with it is, why wouldn't they accept you? They are getting 2k minimum from you and their recruiters will no doubt get commission. They are accepting people who don't even know what a network cable looks like. I went for my first interview last week, have a 2nd coming up where I'd need to pay the deposit. I have no IT history or experience so am very suspicious of this, can you really learn compTIA + in 4 days of classroom based learning and then 3 weeks of home learning? Same goes for MCTS?

Sorry about the randomness of this post!

One of the problems with moving into this sort of IT work is that modern operating systems are very reliable compared to those 5+ years ago. Not so many go wrong so the work in repairs etc is harder to come by. This situation won't get any better as operating systems continue to become more stable.

CompTIA isn't a great certificate and 6k seems very steep for what you are actually getting. The MCTS is ok but experience is where it's at.

My only advise would be to head over to lynda.com where you can learn from home at your own pace for about £20 a month. All tutorials are delivered by industry professionals, they are mostly software based but they may get you what you are looking for (except the certification) for a lot less wonga.

Cheers. I was recommended these guys but felt pretty uneasy after my 1st interview. It seemed too good to be true, a guarantee of a 18-25k 1st line support job or your money back. The catch is, you will have to pass the exams, which include Cisco! Quite sad that they will accept anyone onto the course but that is life i guess.

CISCO would be good to have, no doubt, but these training companies make a lot of money and you need to research carefully before parting with a penny. Good luck with it.

    Good afternoon everyone!

    Please RMT, any suggestions welcomed.

    Mignolet, (Boruc)

    Collins, Koscielny, Clyne, (Parr, Brayford)

    Coutinho, Silva, Hazard, Mirallas, (Thomas)

    RVP, Lukaku, Rodriguez.

My alternative is: Walcott, Soldado, (Anelka) in a 3-5-2 instead of (Thomas), RVP, Rodriguez in my 3-4-3.

    Any thoughts?

Tottenham linked to Christian Atusy (Winger @ Porto) and Christian Eriksen (CM @ Ajax). Do Spurs only buy midfielders and nothing else? Yes it's good to have depth, but 17 (and counting) just seems too many!

Rosenberg and Odemwingie might even get the odd game.

I can see Anelka starting from the bench fairly frequently.

    Afternoon everyone,

    Just putting the final touches to my team and could do with some advice on the following;

Which is best for the DGW?

    A. Lescott & Lamps (currently have)
    B. Terry & Mirallas
    C. 5m def (which one?!) or below & Oscar
    D. Ivan & Barfa / Paulinho

    Thanks!

Wow, I don't know about what you currently have. I don't even know if Lampard will start both games and even if he does, he will be like a holding mid and he won't be on free kick and corner duty since chelsea have so many other players for that. He'll probably be the penalty kick taker though but if I had to choose, maybe B

He is a box to box player who has an eye for goal. Could do well this year if AVB gives him the freedom to bomb forward. The only thing that puts me off is the other value in the 7mil range - players such as Barfa are on peno's and set pieces and more likely to be involved in most of the team goals.

Hi guys just wondering if there are any spurs fans here that know if Dembele will play a more advance role with Bale leaving and Capoue joining because at 5.5 he doesn't seem a bad option

possible, but not likely... holtby, sigurdsson and chadli are more likely to play 'in the hole'. however there could be value if AVB plays 433, as dembele would probably have the most advanced role of the three.
