While expectations were modest, tonight’s Selhurst Park encounter brought a close to the Gameweek and provided a showcase for an array of budget and mid-price talent, whilst also serving up a goal of rare quality.

The Game Changer

Having struck a true goal of the season contender, the night has to belong to Pajtim Kasami. His winning header on the opening day at Sunderland saw the Swiss midfielder emerge as an unlikely budget favourite. Having blanked in his last four starts, tonight’s stunning volley will have re-ignited that early season interest.

Priced at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game, Kasami could offer a true alternative to the likes of Ravel Morrison and United’s Adnan Januzaj. Having started seven of eight league matches, his place in Martin Jol’s lineup has looked assured – his returns perhaps stifled to this point by Fulham faltering form.

Tonight’s convincing victory might signal a change and bring Kasami to the fore as a viable option as a fifth midfielder to free up funds for the big guns. Long-term, Jol’s plentiful options on the flank will provide stern competition. Tonight’s sublime goal offered his manager a reminder of Kasami’s potential as a special talent, however.

The Underused

Dimitar Berbatov already has fewer owners than Kasami – an extraordinary statistic when you consider that the Bulgarian is a proven goalscorer and creator of pedigree. Like Kasami, Berbatov has suffered from Fulham’s start to the season which has seen his return limited to just a single assist in his seven starts before tonight’s goal.

Having slumped to just 7.1 in price, there’s little doubt that a Berbatov, in his pomp, could prove a significant differential if acquisition can be timed with an upturn in form. With three of the toughest defences up next, that time is perhaps some way off. A run of four home matches in six from Gameweek 12 could be the window to cast an eye in Berbatov’s direction should Martin Jol’s men build on tonight’s result.

The Selection Poser

The capitulation of Ian Holloway’s defence at set-plays in the second period will ring alarm bells for those banking on the budget appeal of the Palace rearguard. Danny Gabbidon and Joel Ward are present in almost 8% of FPL squads but, on tonight’s showing, their potential, even as bench warmers, looks limited compared to fellow promoted assets at Hull City and Cardiff.

Arsenal are next to face Palace – not the fixture to help rebuild the confidence after a drubbing. There’s little doubt that many will have the armband on their Gunners’ assets come Saturday’s deadline.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

You see a variety of 5 footballs in a river at your local university campus. You are able to get them all out of the river. Do you

    A) Take all 5 home
    B) Take 2-3 of your favourites home, leave the rest
    C) Take 1, your favourite, leave the rest
    D) Leave them all

It never seems like quite the right time to get a Chelsea player. They're either still deciding who plays where, or not quite in form, or the fixtures aren't good or even when they're not playing the big boys, they don't look that good.

Look at their fixtures after this GW's City game:

new WBA whm SOT sun sto

For 6 sides in the bottom half of the table last season, those are a bit urgh attacking wise. SOT have an insane defence, WBA have become pretty deadly, West Ham and Stoke are notoriously strong at home. That leaves Newcastle and Sunderland as the attractive fixtures and even they are away to passionate crowds.

That's why it's good to already have Cheslea players, that way you don't have to worry about which ones to pick 😉

They're still going to pick up a lot of points form that set of fixtures, so for me, having one or two Chelsea players won't hurt

Saved a transfer this week in order to fix my wack ass midfield containing Moses Siggy Pozuelo (don't ask).

Moses is up against WBA next and Coutinho is set to return. I don't know if he'll stay where he is, be moved wide, or be dropped entirely. He's also been scoring feck all points, obviously until I sell him.

Siggy, like Moses, has looked crap since I bought him. I genuinely don't know if he will start the next game as Spurs (& Soldado) scored almost immediately after he was subbed off for Lennon! FML.

      Pozuelo... hahahahahahaha....

Anyway, right now I'm looking at Moses & Pozuelo > Barkley & Januzaj. This keeps the 5th mid slot cheap so I don't waste too much on the bench. And gives Siggy one more chance in his good run of fixtures.

on their current form, i believe everton can beat any team, especially when you consider they play against spurs, liv and stoke at home..but from what i can see this season, these three teams have become tighter at the back, so don't see any goalfest in there..man utd?ahhh this is a big concern for me,they are not scoring enough goals

My 1st thought is that you should only use 1 transfer this week given that the fixtures really shift in gw 10. And looking more closely at your team, which I think is pretty good, I would probably just bring in Sot defender for Turner this week and do the heavy lifting the following GW.

vidic had a minor injury.. more of a precautionary move to rest him. he will start. and if theres ever a time man u will get a CS its against stoke at old trafford. so dont transfer him out. the other one looks like a good trade. pick clyne if u dont have boruc or another sot defence.. chico otherwise

I want GJ & Spurs in my defense.

Got the Spurs this week. GJ next week as he doesn't seem to be rising this week.

think Spurs D better for the season

Mignolet and Lloris are comparable quality in goal, but Spurs are more solid at the back, and only get more solid once Capoue returns

Chelsea attack seems like a good idea, but maybe not worth it this week. Yaya to Hazard/Oscar can wait.
Maybe upgrading Kolo or Coleman (depends how you see Liverpool's and Everton's defensive prospects.) I like Tottenham as an alternative. They are looking very solid, somewhat surprisingly.

That could actually work out well, but ditching Rooney (STO) for a hit is pretty risky.

I'd say just do Eriksen -> Paulinho and then do the other 2 next week. But, wait for Thursday if you can - worth losing 0.1m to see how Spurs line up in Europa.

I guess there will always be some doubt over City players starting, but Aguero has started 6/7 games when fit and I think it's the League Cup just before NOR (which I expect him to get rested for).

I think some form of City attack is a good idea from next week, and he looks a decent bet imo.

Yeah, I think I'll be doing Giroud -> Benteke the following week (GW11).

Could be costly, but our fixtures are very hard from GW11-17 (City, United, Chelsea, Everton, Sot, Cardiff away) so I'm thinking Ramsey may be my only Arsenal cover for that period (unless Wally is back and firing). Benteke is a beast and has great fixtures to boot.

As for Aguero, I'll probably wait until after the Capital One game (just checked and this is midweek before NOR) and if he's rested ill most likely get him and give him the armband. Not many great alternatives next week.

There's an interesting pattern I noticed with Mourinho's substitutions.

Against Norwich and Cardiff, we were 1-1 somewhere mid game. Mourinho switches to 352 and boom, we score 2 against Norwich and 3 against Cardiff in quick succession. Although not a traditional Juventus-like 352, it opens the game up in our favor against teams with lesser quality and depth. The funny thing is we've looked really open at the back, as Rami and Lamps don't really form a good core midfield in a 352. Yet somehow we haven't conceded in a 352.

I also wonder if Ivanovic is continuing to be preferred over Azpi because of Mourinho's Plan B, allowing Mou to play Ivano as a RCB.

The Plan B does certainly seem to benefit Oscar as the player in the hole as it opens up more space for him to shoot. A sad fact as a Chelsea fan is that comebacks in both games coincided with the exodus of Juan Mata. It's not really happening for him is it?

Actually, I'm pretty convinced. Oscar over Hazard because of the possibility of 352 in case we need goals.

Intriguing. Not watched Chelsea in the Norwich and Cardiff games so missed his 3-5-2 development. Though I was scratching my head at a sub that I think was Azpilicueta > Torres - now I know why.

So you think Oscar is there to stay as Chelsea's #10 force?

I might have to get the guy.

BTW Hazard is a fantastically skilled player, but I've always been somewhat put off by him being a definite winger - I don't see quite the same goal threat as someone playing centrally. It's like how Bale scored far fewer goals while he was actually a winger, and far more when he was allowed to roam centrally.

It's a tricky decision for sure. Hazard has better stats than Oscar, so you'd like to think he'll start converting at a higher rate.

              Pen area touches: H31, O18
              Shots in box: H10, O7
              Chances created: H19, O11

Oscar is firing in more long range strikes which have been working for him of late, but not convinced he can keep that conversion rate up from out the box.

I think so mate. Mourinho might just feature Mata on the wing now to give him more time. Oscar's been our best player and scarily consistent too. In both games Oscar was rested, we went a goal down and could rescue the Cardiff game only after he came on. Everything points to Oscar as the #10.

Might just have to get him and hope he does damage in the odd games he does get rested after coming on as a sub.

mourinho of chelsea, part 1, was predictable and formidable

the current iteration of mourinho feels like someone who has gotten too smart, and is outsmarting himself by overthink (i.e. he was better off when he was a bit less smart)

I don't think it's crazy. But it is not for me.
Despite Hazard having a few good weeks, I'm still not sure what player is best to have in Chelsea's midfield. A few weeks ago, you were insisting that Mata was back and that he was the one to own. In a few weeks, there may be a different flavour of the month.
Rooney to Benteke sounds okay, but I'm keeping Rooney for a few weeks at least. I'm not sure if Benteke will start scoring right away. I want to see a good game before jumping back in.

Think Dawson has the potential to be the highest value defender in the game, if AVB continues to keep him in the first team.

Most Spurs fans seem to think Kaboul is the only one who could oust him out. I personally think Dawson's leadership is too invaluable to AVB's pretty fresh squad.

For each of the first 7 GWs I thought Kaboul was about to take his place. Many Spurs fans agreed. It's just not happening anytime soon.

    @Gaz

Having been the most sanguine about Townsend weeks ago, how would you rank Spurs midfielders in terms of FPL point potential currently? Siggy still the one to own?

I think all spots are under competition other than Paulinho and Townsend.

      Eriksen vs Holtby
      Siggy vs Lennon vs Lamela
      Sandro vs Dembele

It's been obvious that Townsend has been in his life's form (as the saying goes) since gameweek 1, however he has been suffering a bit from Taarabt syndrome playing for Spurs.

In terms of point potential I think Siggy is your man, but in terms of value Townsend probably throws the rest out of the water.

That being said, all attacking midfield options are under heavy contention. There is literally close to a full team battling to fill those 3-4 attacking midfielder slots (remember the 4231 might turn into a 433 as well). Holtby, Lennon, Lamela, Townsend, Paulinho, Eriksen, Dembele, Chadli.

If any conclusions: Paulinho is the most attacking of the nailed on midfielders, but his finishing is not great. Siggy and Townsend are the best for points and value, however these two might be dropped without any warning (Siggy maybe next game, Towsend's got some slack at the moment).

Should have talked to you last night before I talked myself into Vertonghen. Eh, what's done is done, so it's moot. Not looking for any affirmations or critiques there. I baked my pie, now I'll eat it.

Vertonghen is as nailed on as Lloris, and a good bet for those centre back BPS. He won't let you down. His roaming licence has been revoked on a temporary basis though.

            cheers, again

really enjoy watching Lloris play goal; possibly the most fun goalkeeper to watch for his shear guile

oddly, he seems the opposite of Sczeszny, who makes me want to cover my eyes like a small child at his first horror movie, every time he roams beyond the net

All that matches what I've seen. So, has Siggy of Chelsea and Norwich scoring fame crashed and burned now after the West Ham and Villa games? I'm getting seriously concerned about whether I'm going to own part of the Spurs bench.

Now that Lennon is back, we might see some changes for Siggy. And you can only keep Lamela benched for so long. The two are not ideal for the AML position though, as AVB demands them to cut in side and shoot and/or play one-twos with the striker and the AMC.

However, Lennon is terribly inefficient in the AML role as his shot is average at best, and Lamela's more used to that sort of role on the right flank. Which leaves Chadli, and summing up those two season's so far, Siggy comes up on top.

I think Siggy has been so deadly at times this season that he deserves another chance at Hull, but I won't at all be surprised if he gets benched like Eriksen.

I have Siggy myself btw, and will keep another week as my bench can make up for any absence (Barkley avl).

Maybe the problem is that we base our FPL picks on an idealized version of smooth progress instead of the ups and downs of reality.

Take Soldado: "He's got a great goalscoring record, great supply and he will only get better with time as he adjusts to the Premier League!" In reality he scored a penalty in each of the first 2 GWs, went on a goalless run for the next 4... got dropped for Defoe for one disastrous game... came back in.... still hadn't scored midway through the second half of the Villa game... and then scored almost immediately after Lennon came on.

Take Lamela: "He's a fantastic dribbler, a goalscorer, a talent, there's a bit of Messi in him! They wouldn't spend the money on him if he wasn't going to start - get on quick before his bandwagon explodes!" It's now GW8 and we are still waiting for him to start.

On the other hand, take Lampard last season: "He's old, tired and he'll be rotated. He's in decline." Guy ran riot. Or Dawson: "He's old, not that great and will be replaced anytime now by Kaboul..."

Really, perhaps good decisions come down to picking and sticking with players you trust.

It makes me wonder if maybe my approach towards picking midfielders is wrong. I've always gone off what I believed was the more evidence-based approach which was their predicted points based on stats: number and location of shots, average shots conceded by upcoming opponents, etc. And if I see someone is underperforming I quickly sell them. In some cases this has worked. But in two cases already this season it hasn't: Mirallas and Ravel Morrison. Both I got in on their stats, both I sold on their stats, both eventually delivered after I sold them. If, instead, I simply regarded both as great players I should keep unless they got injured or dropped - that would be a lot simpler and I would have a lot more points.

I remember reading a blogpost last year that dealt with what's the right time to pick a player who's about to go up in value to gain economic value for ur team and numbers like 10000 transfers in(round) were thrown about as an approximate.

I see 50000 ppl have transferred in Ozil this GW and he's gone up only by 0.1? 30000 ppl have transferred in Townsend and he's gone up by 0.2...

What's the deal here? Does anyone know what the formula gives weight to like current price/current ownership percentage etc?
