Having analysed those teams with Strong schedules over the next four-to-six Gameweeks late last week, the second part concentrates on the less fortunate sides. Two of the top-flight’s tightest defences face their sternest test yet, while a couple of the bottom three look set for further troubles ahead:

Everton

everton12

Roberto Martinez’s men seem to have taken their foot off the gas at just the wrong time. A hugely disappointing stalemate at Crystal Palace last time out was the product of deeper systemic troubles as Everton struggle to rediscover a cutting edge. With the home leg of the Merseyside derby and trips to United and Arsenal in the next four, they can ill-afford to let this rut deepen.

A recent spate of clean sheets to atone for the lack of goals has seen the likes of Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka hoover up bonus points but these fixtures don’t bode well for a continuation – however, it is a relatively short-term storm that many managers will be minded to ride out. The Toffees’ poor goalscoring form is more troubling, though – they have netted just twice in the last three weeks – and these fixtures may be the last straw for some owners of Romelu Lukaku and Kevin Mirallas. With Ross Barkley’s recently-curtailed game time causing concern, the time may be right to scour the market for a budget midfield alternative.

Tottenham

tottenham12

Defeat at home to Newcastle was not totally without its upside – Spurs were only kept at bay by an extraordinary goalkeeping performance from Tim Krul and their sustained assault on the Newcastle goal offers some crumb of comfort for Andre Villas-Boas. The bad news is that they are staring down the barrel of their hardest stretch of fixtures of the season so far. With a trip to the Etihad next, followed by a home game against Man United and Liverpool three weeks later, anyone hoping to invest in the league’s tightest defence may wish to wait out this upcoming spell.

Kyle Walker has declared himself fit for international duty tonight but he and Jan Vertonghen may be relying on attacking threat to supplement slim pickings from clean sheets. With just nine goals in 11 games, Fantasy interest in Spurs’ attacking assets has waned. These fixtures give us a chance to monitor for signs of life, and also perhaps to glean answers to a few questions .Vlad Chiriches has started the last four games but the jury’s out on who will partner Vertonghen in the middle when Danny Rose returns from injury to re-claim his left-back spot. Likewise, Erik Lamela’s long-awaited start could be of interest if he finds his form – the Argentine offers an option in “the hole” if Christian Eriksen is ruled out with an ankle injury sustained on international duty; reports earlier today suggest the Dane could be sidelined until February with the problem.

Southampton

southampton12

This season’s outstanding budget defence, you won’t find many successful Fantasy teams without at least one of the Saints’ backline in their ranks. Those managers face a conundrum now – the next six Gameweeks include trips to Arsenal and Chelsea and home games against Man City and Tottenham, though showdowns with Villa and Newcastle potentially offer respite.

The second most owned keeper in the FPL game, Artur Boruc will likely be relying on save points, whilst the hugely popular Saints back-four may struggle to add to their current haul of six clean sheets. Adam Lallana is in fine form, with an England call-up to reward his league exploits but these opponents could slow down the pace of his points. With two double figure hauls in three weeks, Rickie Lambert seems to have finally got his season into gear but these fixtures surely dampen any enthusiasm. Managers may wish to monitor Mauricio Pochettino’s men until Gameweek 18 when a more enticing set of fixtures heaves into view.

BE WARY OF

Sunderland
Gus Poyet may have breathed new life into the Wearsiders with a win over City but the schedule remains rather uninviting. Back-to-back away games at Stoke and Villa, followed by home games against Chelsea and Tottenham in the next four may curtail Sunderland’s upturn in form. The fixtures do pick up after that, though, and if the Uruguayan can continue the Black Cats’ progress, cut-price defenders such as Phil Bardsley or even Wes Brown could be worth a look. Up front, Steven Fletcher will be hoping to regain his clinical form of early last season, while Emanuel Giaccherini’s mid-price appeal may persuade those on the lookout for a midfield differential.

Cardiff City
Power tussles behind the scenes are the last thing the Bluebirds need ahead of a schedule containing United, Arsenal and Liverpool in the next six. Such fixtures will delay any potential investment in a defence that had produced a brace of clean sheets prior to the previous Gameweek’s loss at Villa. Managers may use this period to monitor the performances of their budget options in the shape of David Marshall, Ben Turner and Peter Whittingham, while club record signing Andreas Cornelius is also expected to return from an ankle injury in the next couple of weeks.

Fulham
Newly- appointed coach Rene Meulensteen has his work cut out as he attempts to work with manager Martin Jol to rescue the Cottagers from a dire run of form. Games against Swansea at home and West Ham away precede showdowns with Tottenham, Everton and Man City, a schedule that could see them sink further into the mire. Top of the agenda for Jol and Meulensteen will be to resurrect their dormant Bulgarian genius and coax out the goals in Dimitar Berbatov. If they can emerge from these fixtures with form intact, then defensive assets such as Sascha Riether and Brede Hangeland could also be worth investing in, while Patjim Kasami has the potential to be a very useful midfield budget enabler; at just 4.5, he’s started 10 of the first 11 Gameweeks.

Not me. After owning VdV and Bale for most of 2011/12, and then Bale for all of 2012/13 I found myself hoping for decent returns from both Eriksen and Sigurdsson at stages earlier this season. Not going back to that midfield for a loooooooooong time.

They have enough trouble passing the ball, that 3 man defensive mid would not give them any chance. They are just soo slow getting the ball from defense to attack. They would need one of their Cms to be able to pass(Modric, Carrick, Alonso type) Maybe the injured guy was the answer I dont know

and that's their problem. They've not been playing Eriksen regularly despite him being their only decent creative player so far, and they've got Clownsend shooting from 35 yards out and Paulinho playing virtually as a striker not feeding Soldado but waiting to be set up by one of his dodgy wingers or Dembele. Just doesn't work.

I am really starting to see the importance of guys I mentioned above. Like Eriksen alone cant do it if the ball takes so long to get to him that the defenders have all established great position. It is gonna get tough for United until christmas unless Clev or Giggs can step up in that role.

Maybe not this week because it's City, but I would throw caution to the wind and play Soldado and Defoe and attempt to play quick ball to them. A 2 pronged attack will at least make them less predictable.

I can't think of anyone I'd rather be having shots from outside the box. Defoe is a master at hitting the target. It'll never happen though, because AVB seems incapable of adapting to the players he has at his disposal.

I think 2 up front would be good, but playing Defoe and Soldado together wouldn't be the wisest decision - since their both really just good 'ole poachers. AVB should swallow some pride and play Adebayor with Soldado if he wants to play 2 from the start..

Adebayor hasn't played in months. Can't just throw him in hoping he'll form a partnership. I know Defoe has limitations, but why does everyone want to focus on those? You can over analyse this and that, but he's a goalscorer (not a poacher) and Spurs aren't scoring goals.

I'm not calling for Adebayor to start right away, but I think he will be more effective than Defoe.I agree Defoe is a goalscorer, but I think he's far too similar to Soladado to start with him and if I had too choose between the two I would go Soldado.

I'd prefer Dembele dropping to the bench for Holtby as a no.10. He works tremendously without the ball and has been playing decently.

Also, heaven knows how Lamela is doing - he's looked out of his depth every game bar the Europa League tie in which he scored though that was his last game. He may need some sub appearances in the premier league before he can start...

I don't mean vs Man City I just mean in general.

Could Lamela's problem not be a lack of game time? he's played 70 minutes in the league and the rest of his time is with a second choice team in the EL.

Yeah I know, its just that a good no10 should make the strikers role much easier.

Maybe, but he said that adapting will take time because he doesn't know the language etc etc so I think a few sub appearances and then his first start in the Christmas congestion would be ideal

I was surprised Lamela and even Holbty didn't even make it off the bench vs Newcastle, especially after Lamela played very well a few days beforehand and it's not as if what AVB went with from the start was working (okay Krul did make some crazy saves though!)

AVB's a better manager than he was at Chelsea but he remains a very stubborn man.

Though the reason he may have not made those subs was because he was out of subs (Kabuold injured, Dembele hooked at HT)

I'm not a Townsend fan (I'm sorry I don't work for the dailymail) but he manages to beat his player with real ease (before making a terrible decision). So if he works on his decision making he can be a very good player, after all he's already good at the difficult part..

He could be brilliant if he gets his decision making sorted but currently (as an Arsenal fan cheering for the opposition) it doesn't worry me at all when he gets past a defender because it's blatantly obvious where it's going to end up.

I've been touting Lamela as an option for a few weeks now he finally has some confidence. People keep trying to make me go to rehab but I won't go (go, go).

To me this is the perfect time to throw him into the mix. Spurs don't score now so if they play him and don't score there is no difference! The Eriksen injury combined with Siggy coming back knackered from two WC playoff games makes it all the more enticing.

C'mon AVB, switch Townsend to the other flank to inject some width there then give the out of form Clichy or lead footed Kolarov the problem of defending Lamela this weekend!

Chester is a doubt, and if you believe the media Ravel and Eden have had falling outs with their respective managers and may not play either, but at least you have a bench of regulars. Looking alright.

Rather Walcott + Whitt over Nasri + Snodgrass in the long run. Whitt is pretty useless though.

true, would you agree townsend is the problem?? Not sure I do, OK he may be taking on a few too many shots, with half ending closer to the corner flag, but if he got his head up and passed he could become absolute gold!! I like seeing players run at defenders, just needs to find that last pass.

Some advise would be much appreciated...

    Mignolet (Boruc)
    Clyne Chico Coleman (Dawson) (Collins)
    Whittingham Hazard Ramsey Yaya (Ward-Prowse)
    Aguero Giroud Suarez

    1 FT

Considering Dawson > G.Johnson and Giroud > Remy

Worth doing either transfer free this week/ both this week for -4 hit/ none and save FTs for next GW?

I've found it very interesting watching limited teams struggle over the last few years with choosing to defend. Ireland for example, where Trapattoni came under constant attack for defending. Pulis at Stoke. Hodgson at England. Of course in all cases you know why defence is preferred; because attacking is seen as too risky and it is not believed the talent exists for it anyway. But in these cases I think you see that choosing to defend has psychological consequences for players and supporters - the fun of the game is scoring goals, so you feel like you've given up on enjoying football.

I've been playing in a football club with 5 mates on FIFA for the last 6 weeks and we set out to play very defensively from the start because of all the skillers out there. And yeah it kind of worked for a while. We were grinding out a fair number of clean sheets amongst the odd thrashing. But we weren't scoring at all regularly and we were beginning to get seriously frustrated, you begin to wonder why you bother playing if the moment you get the ball you're so deep that you have no one in a good position to pass to, and your moves break down long before you get into their box. We were playing a 4-4-1-1 with a deep defensive line and frankly our best chance of scoring was from corners, that was when we got them.

Two nights ago we had enough and switched to an attacking 4-3-3 and we find it so much more fun. We're actually scaring other teams! Entering the box! Having shots! If we sort our finishing out we might even be scoring soon...
