We turn our attentions to North London and plunder a couple of overlooked alternatives ahead of the weekend deadline. Our third option will be expecting a start up top for City as Manuel Pellegrini’s side look for a tenth-straight win in front of their own supporters:

Edin Dzeko

As the festive fixtures arrive thick and fast, Manuel Pellegrini’s lack of forwards could prove beneficial to the big Bosnian’s short-term prospects. With Sergio Aguero sidelined and Stevan Jovetic doubtful once again, the City boss has been all too reliant on Alvaro Negredo to produce the goods up top and keep his side in the title race.

Having shifted to a 4-2-3-1 for the Boxing Day visit of Liverpool, Pellegrini now has the option of retaining the formation or returning to his preferred 4-4-2 as City prepare for the visit of Crystal Palace tomorrow afternoon. Certainly, the Eagles game looks the ideal opportunity to unleash Dzeko, either as the lone forward or alongside Negredo, with Pellegrini intent on maintaining the attacking verve which has seen his side average more than four goals per home game thus far.

Coming in at 6.7 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Dzeko (who sets you back 8.5 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team), also has a trip to Swansea on his agenda before the winter wildcard kicks in and could be worth a punt for those Fantasy managers frustrated by the recent displays of Olivier Giroud and Romelu Lukaku in their three-man frontlines.

Christian Eriksen

A peripheral figure in the league under Andre Villas-Boas, Eriksen has been earmarked as key to Tim Sherwood’s new-look attacking approach. After arriving from Ajax at the end of the summer transfer window, Eriksen was afforded 90 minutes just once by Villas-Boas as the former Tottenham boss chopped and changed personnel with a frustrating regularity.

Since the Portuguese’s departure, Eriksen’s Fantasy prospects have taken a shot in the arm. Installed as a central midfield playmaker in Sherwood’s 4-4-2, he’s played every minute of the new manager’s two matches in charge and, with set-piece duties also part of his repertoire, fired a superb free-kick in Thursday’s draw against West Brom to serve a reminder of the talents that produced 17 goals and 36 assists in his final two seasons in the Dutch top-flight.

Priced at just 7.1 in FPL (7.0 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team), he has home games against Stoke and Palace in the next three to arrive on our radars in perfect time for the winter wildcard.

Lukas Podolski

In his only start of the season, the German international bagged a brace in Arsenal’s 3-1 win at Fulham back in Gameweek 2. Before August was out, however, Podolski was stuck in the Emirates treatment room after sustaining a hamstring injury on Champions League duties – a bitter blow for a player who had racked up 11 goals and 10 assists in just 1,986 minutes across his debut season.

Finally recovered, Podolski needed just 26 minutes at West Ham on Boxing Day to demonstrate his capabilities. A devastating substitute appearance produced a goal and assist as the Gunners turned around a one-goal deficit to send Big Sam’s side into the drop zone and propel themselves back to the summit.

As Olivier Giroud toils up top, with two goals from open play in 14 starts, Podolski’s explosive display at Upton Park has made a real claim for consideration as the Gunners lone striker for the weekend trip to Newcastle. Arsene Wenger could also shift Santi Cazorla to the centre and allow the German the left flank berth if he chooses to finally rest Mesut Ozil but, either way, Podolski’s eye for goal could be just as vital as Theo Walcott’s to his side’s title aspirations.

With home games against Cardiff, Fulham and Palace and a trip to Villa in the five games following the Newcastle clash, the schedule is certainly in favour of the fit-again striker, who would set you back just 8.1 in FPL, 8.7 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team.

    Re-post from yesterday.

Some ranking stats to put people's current positions into context.

    Current ranking and points:

    1 // 1,301
    1,000 // 1,209
    5,000 // 1,180
    10,000 // 1,166
    50,000 // 1,126
    100,000 // 1,104
    250,000 // 1,066
    500,000 // 1,023
    1,000,000 // 950

Rank bandings and no. of points difference:

    1 - 1,000 // 92
    1,000 - 5,000 // 29
    1,000 - 10,000 // 14
    10,000 - 50,000 // 40
    50,000 - 100,000 // 22
    100,000 - 250,000 // 38
    250,000 - 500,000 // 43
    500,000 - 1,000,000 // 73

The top 1k are certainly pulling away from the rest of the bunch now and there is now almost 100pts separating top place and top 1k. Elsewhere there's still a fair amount of bunching, particular attention should be made to the 14pts separating 1k and 10k and 22pts separating 50k and 100k. From the above it's clear that there's still a lot to play for....

    Points hit damage:

Those looking to take points hits, the below is a rough guide as to how places rank each 4pt hit is worth:

    1 - 1,000 // 43
    1,000 - 5,000 // 552
    1,000 - 10,000 // 2,571
    10,000 - 50,000 // 4,000
    50,000 - 100,000 // 9,091
    100,000 - 250,000 // 15,789
    250,000 - 500,000 // 23,256
    500,000 - 1,000,000 // 27,397

e.g. let's say someone is currently ranked at 350k, any points hits taken will be worth approx 23k places in rank (the above are only approx, the actual rank difference can vary depending on whereabouts within the relevant banding you are).

Good work. Although....I'm currently in 637 (1,216 points) and took an 8 point hit for Boxing Day, 4's in the two GWs before that. I've actually just rotted up that I've taken a total of 36 point hits which could probably put me in the top 300 all things unchanged but I genuinely believe that each it has made my team stronger in subsequent weeks and allowed me to get players in that were rising quickly and would have been out of my reach.

Yep I agree hits are a must. As long as you have a good idea when to take them, and take both the short and long term context into account.

      *5,000 - 10,000 // 14.

And a 4-point hit only causes a drop of that number of places if the new player fails to score more points than the one he is replacing. If the new player scores 4 points more than the old one, then your figures would indicate the number of places gained by taking the hit!

But the stats are interesting anyway. Thanks.

Lots of if's and but's there. No reason why all around you wouldn't take a point hit and then the stats are valid. Again if's and but's. 😀

Some hits turn out well, others don't. Just saying that in most cases a 4-point hit does not lose the full 4 points compared with not taking that hit. And in a significant minority of cases it might actually result in a gain rather than a loss.

He will be protected once the flag is removed i.e. he comes back from injury.

Until he's injured, no protection. Only the NT threshold is increased for him to drop.

Around this time last GW I flopped and switched my caltain armband from Walcott to Suarez.

I feel a need to stick with Rooney and stay the course.

It's crazy how past mistakes cause plan changes that lead to future mistakes.

Have you guys retained your original captain gut feeling choice; or are you swapping?

Set on saving my transfer this week so my biggest issue is who to play of marshall or Harper ?? Got B. Turner so marshall would mean doubling up on Cardiff. Sunderland dont score goals though. What would you do ?

Harper since you have Burner. Smart to spread the risk.

I'd say probably try Marshall because I don't think Harper is nailed on. McGregor may just recover. About the doubling up issue, I think Cardiff should be fine and not concede too many anyway.

Who would you bench from this:

Distin (SOT): good home fixture but saints are a decent team so good chance of scoring. However most ppl have everton defender so tempted to start him to cover everyone else

Burner (SUN): cardiff @home has usually done well for me and sland are not great at goal scoring, i have mannone as my gk if that makes any difference.

Mert (new): he is my big hitter in def and generally arsenal-new have goals in them but ars can easily keep a cs coupled with his goal scoring ability

Chester (FUL): hull have been great at home for cleanies but not sure how the injuries to their def would impact them...fulham starting to find some form but chester was attacking a lot in the last game..

    sigh, so confused

Burner and merte is a coin toss. I cant choose between them!

    Morning.

Just had a quick look on my RMT, and Suárez is my highest rated player for this gameweek, yet it's got David Silva as my captain. Any reason for this or is their a glitch somewhere.

    Cheers for any help. Appriciated.

I'm actually disappointed with the timing of Kallis' retirement, mainly because he is so close to breaking some big records that he would easily get in one more test series.

Should pass Ponting and Dravid to become the second highest run scorer after Sachin. Out of all those greats he has the highest average as well.. And if that wasn't enough, he's also taken nearly 300 wickets.. incredible. The other record is he should try to pass 300 as he has 292 atm,

i dont think there will ever be another cricketer to score over 13,000 runs AND take 300 wickets, not for a long time at least.

I'll always be a Kallis fan because he won us (Kolkata Knight Riders) the IPL title chasing more than 200 in the final. 🙂

His achievements in test cricket are incredible. Best all rounder of this generation.

I might actually play Shelvey over Barks though, Villa are pants at home. But its 50/50

I had the exact same dilemma mate, I eventually chose Barkley over Shelvey though. Shelvey played a full 90 minutes on Thursday and may well get rested today. Barkley, however, came on as a sub and had a few chances, and he made a huge impact.
