If the 3-1 defeat to Chelsea that left his side 14 points off the summit wasn’t galling enough, the dismissal of his skipper added insult to injury for David Moyes. Nemanja Vidic’s 90th-minute sending-off for a late tackle on Eden Hazard means the centre-half will now miss the next three matches across all competitions as the beleaguered United boss attempts to salvage his debut season at the helm:

After having his appeal for wrongful dismissal rejected earlier today, Vidic will now be sidelined for Wednesday’s Capital One Cup semi-final second leg against Sunderland as the Red Devils attempt to turn around a 2-1 deficit at Old Trafford. The Serbian will also be an absentee for the subsequent two league matches – at home to Cardiff a week tomorrow and away to Stoke the following weekend – before being available for selection ahead of the Gameweek 25 visit of Fulham. His Old Trafford team-mate Rafael was a little lucky not to join Vidic on the naughty step after his two-footed challenge on Gary Cahill was only deemed worthy of a yellow card.

Elsewhere, Hull’s Tom Huddlestone is suspended for one match this weekend after earning a couple of yellow cards in last Saturday’s defat at Norwich. The midfielder is available for Gameweek 23, though, and will instead sit out the Tigers’ FA Cup Fourth Round trip to Southend.

This morning, the FA charged Nicolas Anelka for his gesture during the December 28 clash with West Ham. The Baggies forward has until 6pm on Thursday evening to respond to the charge.

In terms of yellow cards accumulated over the previous Gameweek, Aston Villa continue to rack up the bookings. Ciaran Clark earned his seventh caution of the campaign against Liverpool on Saturday evening, whilst Ashley Westwood and Karim El Ahmadi picked up their sixth and fifth respectively. Bearing in mind Paul Lambert’s side also have Fabian Delph on eight bookings and Gabby Agbonlahor sitting on seven, the Midlands side are certainly living up to their “Villains” nickname.

Indeed, no other team has five players with five or more cautions – United, Chelsea and Newcastle are the closest, with four culpable players apiece.

What are your thoughts on Gary Cahill as a potential replacement for Coleman? I'm guessing he's nailed on with the form he's been in and Chelsea's defense has been rock solid recently so plenty of points there.
My bench looks like: Clyne (ARS), Chester (cry) and Mutch (mun) so no decent back up really.
If Coleman is out for 1-2 weeks, would you suggest playing one of those or would moving for cahill be a better option? Also I'll only lose .3 on him since I bought him back recently.

Him and terry seem to be forming a pretty good partnership. I'm really not that sure about it though so I was hoping you guys would give me more info about his chances of staying there.

I would get him but Matic coming in will mean Luiz will move back and provide even more competition at CB. Can you afford Ivano?

the consensus on cahill seems to be that the Matic signing is likely to destabilize his security of starts. Luiz no longer needed in midfield, so he would come into the defense rotation.
Luiz in a fullback role frees up Ivanovic, who would play CB more often.

      Something like that.

I don't share the opinion, but many here say that Azpilicueta is "nailed" and A.Cole won't get many starts.
I say it's a nest of snakes. The only sure things, IMO, are Terry and Ivanovic.

If Rooney/RVP returns this gameweek, who does it negatively affect more... Welbeck or Januzaj? (Just talking about this GW)

For this GW only, there's no way both will return and start. So assuming Rooney comes back in, I think Ashley Young would be the one to drop out. Welbeck and Januzaj have earnt their starts

logically Januzaj should be nailed on over Nani, Young and Valencia (or just played at LW and then just over Nani and Young) so the two players' returns shouldn't affect him. realistically, who knows.

Welbeck certainly as he now will have to compete with Januzaj and the other winger cohort (and purely based on build-up play/creation, Januzaj gets the nod over Welbeck who will likely not score as much coming in from a wide position though I am appreciate of his close control)

But just this gameweek... Rooney could return. Does this help Welbeck and negatively impact of Januzaj?

I want it to improve Januzaj, but to be honest, I think the opposite.

ah sorry didn't see the parenthetical..

If only Rooney returns, then the player impacted is Kagawa. Young/Januzaj will contest the LW spot and Welbeck will stay up top.

Unless Moyes has been lying about their recovery, there's no way RVP returns for this match. Maaaaybe the bench at Stoke but I wouldn't hold my breath and Rooney returning for Cardiff is a coinflip.

Yeah, I'm sure Welbeck + Januzaj will both play, even if Rooney comes back.

But how does it affect their points return vs Cardiff?

both are hit or miss anyways when it comes to FPL if you ask me, but Rooney's return would definitely benefit Welbeck more than Januzaj.

also I do think Januzaj is more deadly out wide than in the hole so I wouldn't be surprised to see him potentially notch a few assists if he stays out there

I disagree with about half of your rules that you posted last night but I'm surprised there wasn't more debate about them. I couldn't argue against them as I was on my mobile at work.
Looking at your team value you should be arguing against half of them as well. You'd never have that team value if you'd followed your rules and you'd never have been able to get in half the players that you did on your wildcard.

well that's why I stressed that they're guidelines more than anything. I took a fair number of hits that I shouldn't have this season (ones that didn't gift me price rises) and if you look at my Transfer History, you'll see the same player haphazardly being dropped and added (mutually exclusively from injury).

OK it's a LOT quieter now so maybe this is a good time to bring this back up..feel free to ignore if you're not interested or won't contest any of these with anything more than 'I disagree' because I would love to have people dash some of these to bits 😉

    ---

I thought it would go without saying but I guess it needs mentioning..these are NOT steadfast rules that I will be abiding by, just bits of advice that are good to keep in mind on a week to week basis as FPL, just like football, is fraught with emotion and it's easy to get caught up in a whirlwind on a match day and regret your move shortly thereafter..

think about the word TRY appearing before each of these..they are just guidelines after all and CERTAINLY not steadfast rules..

    1. Use one free transfer per gameweek tops, do not take hits if you can't justify it logically.
    2. Keep a player you've transferred in for at least few matches.
    3. A hit should be worthwhile for more than one gameweek.
    4. Don't take hits for punts.
    5. Don't focus too much on price changes, 4 points is often better than 0.1m.
    6. Save vanilla WC for after the Jan WC.
    7. Think clearly, don't get caught up in "chasing last week's points".
    8. Sleep on a big transfer decision before making it.
    9. Try to wait to make your transfers until there are no more games your current players might play before the next PL game. Last thing you want is to bring someone in early and then have to take a hit due to injuries/suspensions from late/midweek games. (i.e. Coleman today..)
    10. Focus on nailed on players.
    11. Wait for official confirmation from the club before knee-jerking and ditching a good player.
    12. Be mindful of the exact price when a player is set to drop as oftentimes that single 0.1m doesn't change your selling price yet.
    13. Careful of players linked heavily with moves out of the league during January.

I'm guilty of breaching 9 and 13 by doing Ozil > Cabaye to fund Giroud > Kun 😆

      1. You can always justify it to yourself at the time. My two 8 point hits early on in the season helped make my team. Just make sure there is a positive expectation and a team value benefit.
      2. If a player turns out to be crap lose him quick - no holding onto deadwood!
      3. A hit should be worthwhile - even if it's only for one gameweek (ie no playing keeper).
      4. Agreed
      5. Team value makes a massive difference at Wildcard time if someone is rising 0.3m and is playing consistently well then get him in for a few weeks at least!
      6. Wildcard early when it can have most impact on your team value.
      7. Agreed but chasing transfer adds value first half of the season.
      8. Agreed after checking on price rises.
      9. As 8.
      10. DEFINITELY true
      11. Agreed

Once the January wildcard has been played team value means nothing, load up on the best players and watch them score loads of points. Don't take hits except for dgwks- in which case 2 free transfers and an 8 point hit are acceptable to load up on all the best players as long as it doesn't tear your team apart long term.

Thats some good advice - though FT + -4 HIT is my baseline (transformed my fortunes this season)

Might I make a suggestion ? - A harsh lesson learned in the early new year -

      14. Desist from making transfers, particularly wild-card's when you are feverish and ill

Like I did on a laptop with 5 minutes left of battery-life in a Lidl car park sweating bullets ruminating on likely price rises.

Took a massive -12 hit ....... the week after wild-carding - absolutely insane eh !

      _______

If sick - stay away from fpl -

i'm wildcarding this week and catching price-risers.

Certainly not. The very reason he is now playing deeper is exactly for that fact that we want him to play every game. Brendan is trying to save his legs.

But I've got more urgent issues to address and having to make several transfers to get him this week.

Would cost me £0.2m assuming he rises fully. But gives me a much better team for this GW if I don't.

I think I'd rather have Welbeck and Eto'o, instead of Aguero + 1. The price changes are the difficulty.

I posted about a similar subject last week. Basically, if you look at Hazard over this season and last, he is one of the players who consistently outperforms his stats (and conversely, Silva is one who consistently underperforms in comparison to his stats)

City defence has little upside outside of any CS as they don't get a lot of BPs. Hart is nailed on and at least has save point potential

But if West Ham get everyone fit, their defence is worth investing in

But then you could have kos or azpi. That's why I've gone uber cheap fir a keeper.

Yeah Kos and eother Azpi, Cahill or Terry for me

The real question is, do we need to bother with City defence? Only Hart, Komps and Zaba are nailed

Hart and Komps are expensive, Zaba flatters to decieve. City will get CS but so will other teams. Terry may be more expensive but he has a goal threat and gets BPs to make him worth it.

Agreed. I wouldn't go near them personally. Zab I like but you need more chance of cleanies to invest that sort of money I think.

as it stands my wc defence will be

              Adrian/Mannone

              Kos, Terry, Coleman, Ward, Bruce

If Coleman is injured I'll re-evaluate and either get Hart and rotate cheap defenders or go Kolarov or double Chelsea
