As always, our Monday afternoon regular casts an eye over the weekend’s matches as Fantasy managers begin to plan in preparation for the decimated Gameweek 29 schedule:

Adebayor is a frustrating figure…
This is nothing new. We know this. We’ve known it since he appeared back on our player lists. In a Gameweek in which many granted him the armband after his midweek Europa League double, the Tottenham forward treated us and Tim Sherwood to a laboured display which garnered just an assist as the north London outfit huffed a puffed against Cardiff. Let’s be honest, as soon as Adebayor emerged as a Fantasy prospect, we were waiting for him to let us down – is it too early to get the jitters or is Sunday’s complacent display a sign of things to come?

Dawson isn’t bowing out easily…
The Spurs club skipper was a dominant figure in the home win over Cardiff and was singled out for post-match praise by his manager. While Younes Kaboul is injured and could well oust him to the bench when fit – as we saw as recently as Gameweek 26 – Dawson’s display will not have made it easy for Tim Sherwood. Much as we’d like Kaboul as a prospect for 4.6, it may not be an option just yet.

Martinez feels he can rest Mirallas…
The Belgian was omitted from the Palace teamsheet for the postponed Gameweek 26 clash as Roberto Martinez looked to give him a breather. Having scored in each of his last two home stats, Mirallas was heavily-backed this weekend but found himself warming the bench as Everton squeezed past West Ham. With Gerard Deulofeu and Aidan McGeady both pushing for game time, the recent turn of events is a real concern – all the more frustrating given Everton’s excellent forthcoming ruin of fixtures. Romelu Lukaku’s winner against Big Sam’s men suggests he may be the Merseysiders’ key attacking option for the run-in now.

The midfield malfunctions just go on…
Mirallas rested, Robert Snodgrass ineffective and replaced at half-time with an injury, Adam Lallana impressive without quite producing the points in Southampton’s home loss to Liverpool. How fitting, then, that both Eden Hazard and Yaya Toure reminded us of their brilliance and ability to deliver yet again this weekend. Fantasy managers are screaming out for some differentials to show some consistency and rival that duo’s appeal but given their form, it’ll be a bold move to go without either for the run-in. Even those who have pointedly rejected Toure up until now will likely succumb to his potential, bearing in mind that City will have three doubles in the last nine Gameweeks.

Suarez and Sturridge – it gets tricky from here on in…
In recent weeks, owning both has paid off in style – particularly if you made the switch back to Suarez this weekend. Sturridge arrived at Southampton on Saturday evening as the forward in form, though, and was understandably backed by many but only returned a two-point haul. Only once in the last five starts have Suarez (4,5,2,5,15) and Sturridge (9,6,15,16,2) registered similar scores, highlighting how difficult they are making the armband decision. Both may be in outstanding form but the margins of error are substantial – calling the captaincy wrong in each of the last five would have earned you 36 points, whereas the right decision would have brought home 122 points. From here on in, the armband call looks a difficult one, fraught with potential frustration.

Sterling could be sacrificed as we reach the business end…
A run of 15 successive league starts came to an end last weekend as the youngster dropped to the bench. Brendan Rodgers drafted Joe Allen into the centre and rolled out a midfield diamond in his successful attempt to contain Southampton at St Mary’s – Sterling’s impact as a second half sub still saw him find the net but given the emphatic display against the Saints, the winger’s owners may well be worried.

Benteke might just be the answer…
The Belgian is threatening to embark on a run similar to last season, where he notched 14 times in the last 18 Gameweeks. Benteke put on a muscular display to skittle the Norwich back four on Sunday, taking his tally to five goals and a pair of assists in his last eight appearances and demonstrating he’s got the weaponry to banish any talk of relegation at Villa. Fantasy managers who dare to take a punt with one of their precious squad slots up front could well be rewarded by the in-form Belgian.

Arsenal are giving us the jitters…
There are real concerns about the Gunners’ prospects at both ends of the pitch and we’re already seeing significant sales of their main Fantasy assets since the weekend loss at Stoke. One win and a single clean sheet in the last four highlights Arsenal’s current form as his side start to stumble – with a blank Gameweek 29, followed by Spurs, Chelsea, City and Everton, the exodus is understandable.

Baines is back in the reckoning…
The Toffees left-back delivered an assist, maximum bonus and clean sheet return against West Ham on Saturday and was joint-top for creativity over the Gameweek, supplying as many chances as Eden Hazard. Since returning from a toe injury in Gameweek 19, Baines has racked up three sets of double figures, with a goal, two assists and nine bonus points over that period – Seamus Coleman has a goal and two bonus points by comparison. With the Merseysiders set for some superb fixtures after this weekend’s blank, those currently without an Everton defender may well be swayed by Baines’ form.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The options are pretty poor this week. Personally I wouldn't want to own any of the lower priced options that are playing this week (Snodgrass, Adam, Ince and Puncheon), even though I regrettably own Ince.

Can't really know if it will be any good until a couple of races. If the cars are on a level playing field, and there is good racing without too much emphasis on tactics and tyres, then it could be good. I'm not holding my breath though.

Firstly, I'm one of the few that didn't want Suarez to come to Arsenal, I think he's a massive scumbag. But:

"I am 26, I need to be playing in the Champions League. I feel I have done enough to be playing in the Champions League at this stage of my career. Now there is an option for me to do that and I want very much to take it. I want to move to play in the Champions League and there is a club offering me that opportunity. I have told the manager that I want to leave the club."

Rodgers then said Suarez was lying and there is no clause and that he was being disrespectful to Liverpool. Then he was made to train on his own.

They always maintained the stance that there was no release clause.

Rodgers then said Arsenal lacked class because of the bid, which now we can see wasn't classless at all, just the release clause.

Then John Henry said 'What are they smoking over there at the Emirates?' Disrespectful to us, especially as there was nothing wrong with it.

And then you think how much stick Arsenal got in the media for making that bid.

Completely classless by their owner. (I assume Rodgers didn't know)

At the time of Arsenal's offer, Henry tweeted: "What do you think they're smoking over there at Emirates?"

But speaking as part of a panel at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference at the weekend, the 64-year-old American said: "I don't know to what degree I should go into this - but [Suarez] had a buy-out clause of £40m.

"But what we've found over the years is that contracts don't seem to mean a lot in England - actually not in England, in world football.

"It doesn't matter how long a player's contract is, he can decide he's leaving.

"We sold Fernando Torres for £50m. We didn't want to sell but we were forced to.

"For the first time [with Suarez] we took the position that we weren't selling."

Of Liverpool and Suarez's future prospects, Henry added: "What will happen at the end of year, I think we're going to make Champions League and we have a small chance of winning the Premier League this year.

"We have three gentlemen up front - Suarez, [Raheem] Sterling and [Daniel] Sturridge. Those three are young, and I think [they] could be together for a long time."

Thought that both Suarez and LFC brought the contract to a mediator (was it the Professional Footballers Association or something like that) and they concluded that 40m was not a buy out clause (but they needed to inform the player that there was a bid)

Of course they do owe them an apology. Insulting them for a bid that did match Suarez's buy out clause and lying to everybody, Suarez included, that there was no buy out clause. Suarez doesn't have to hand a transfer request, it is enough that there is a bid that meets the buy out clause and Suarez would say yes to that bid.

That they turned down a bid that met the buy-out clause is outright against the contract, and although Suarez probably doesn't want to sue them now, if he would, he would win it.

It is well known that there was a clause in Suarez' contract for £40m that he thought was a release clause. The PFA got involved at the time to arbitrate and concluded that it wasn't a concrete release clause, and didn't require Liverpool to sell, just to inform him of the bid and maybe enter negotiations. If it was a proper release clause Suarez would likely have put in a transfer request or sued the club to let him go, but he discovered that the clause didn't say what he thought it did.

        http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-transfer-news-pfa-chief-2137102

John Henry is using the wrong term by referring to this as a 'buy-out clause' as it has already been established what was in it, and it did not require his release.

Wenger presumably heard from Suarez' agent that he had a £40m buyout clause, which encouraged him to put the bid in, but was misinformed.
I'd still say the fact that it was £40m + £1 is not a sign of class, bidding the minimum amount possible like that is not exactly usual. Generally football transfers are all conducted in nice round numbers, intervals of £50k minimum

Or then there was a buy-out clause and it was interpreted wrongly by Taylor back then. It seems that Henry is now revealing something that was not known back then.

As Taylor said, the clause is written in a way that is difficult to interpret. One thing is that if Suarez has been let understand, when signing the contract, that it is a buy-out clause, then the contract comes void in the case that Liverpool tries to interpret it as not a buy-out clause, because the contract has been fraudulent. Of course, Suarez would have to somehow be able to prove that.

now, it's a little matter, because Suarez probably doesn't wish to fight about it with Pool lead.

Its Taylor's job, as head of the PFA, to understand and arbitrate these things, him getting it wrong would be a pretty huge deal. As it is he says "It quite clearly states £40million is a minimum offer for discussions" and that "It does not say the club has to sell"
As head of the players union, he supports the player by saying that there is no point keeping an unhappy player who doesn't want to be there, but there is no requirement for Liverpool to let him go.

The contract does not become void even if Suarez is given to understand that it means something different to what it does. He will have had his own lawyers check over the contract before signing it, as is standard practice, so they should've been able to explain to him what it says. Contracts are usually drawn up jointly between a club's legal team and the player's lawyers, so there's no real reason for Suarez to be ignorant about its content.

So let me precise... If Henry would simply use the wrong wording, he would not say that they didn't respect the contract. He would say that "but the clause did not mean we should sell, so we didn't". Instead he says that the contracts don't mean anything so they just don't sell despite the buy-out clause.

John Henry is speaking at an American sports conference, none of them are experts in English football. John Henry certainly isn't, though he's probably slightly more clued up than when he bought the club.
This ground has already been covered, and the contents of the contract analysed over and over, we know what was in it, so it seems more likely that he mis-spoke, rather than there being something in the contract that everyone missed until now.

I feel he has a point in that contracts mean very little though, 9 times out of 10 when a player wants a move they get it. Usually keeping an unhappy player usually just results in them playing poorly, and their value going down. That was a risk that Liverpool took in keeping a player who clearly wanted to leave, fortunately for them nothing happened to Suarez' form, if anything he just got better.

      Instead of Kos > Evra

how about a Chelsea triple up:
Cahill, Terry and Hazard for this GW
      so
Kos > Terry for next 2 GW's then WC.

With Puncheon and Noone doubtful I need to make two transfers this week to get out 8/10 in the worst/best case scenario.

Kos is out for either Olsson or Evra.

Strikers are Benteke, Sturridge, Suarez and with the latter two on huge price rises Benteke has to give way.

      Would you do
      A) Olsson and Rooney or
      B) Evra and Rodriguez

If the former then Rooney stays for the DGW and Mata becomes Yaya.
If the latter then Rodriquez becomes Aguero and Lallana becomes Henderson.

      Cheers

          Cheers both, a split vote.

I could end up in a situation where I'm transferring out Mata and Rooney for Aguero and Yaya before the DGW.

I'm just quite loathe to build my entire strategy around getting Aguero, did that with the January WC and it lasted all of 45 minutes.

Only have 6-7 players this GW.
Who should I go for this previous FT?

      a) Kosc -> Evra (4-3-3 til the end, with one 4.0 mid bench fodder)

      b) Gabbidon -> Pieters (4-3-3 with STO/HUL rotation at the back, 5.0 mid bench)

      c) Gabbidon -> Ward (will have Sterling at DGW, 3 way rotation with Ward/Bruce/Sterling GW 32 onwards)

I have 2FT's and 6.3 ITB and thinking of using one for a one week punt, likely getting rid of Kos but who for, cash in on JT's rise tonight and double up on Chelsea at the back or is this silly? I'll then look to swap JT for Coleman the following week for one of the 2FT's I'll have again...any advice?

Your comment prompted me to have a look at United's players on the transfer page.

Only one of them has risen above their starting price, and thats Rooney

Two backup goalkeepers and Nick Powell still have their starting price, and absolutely everyone else has fallen in price. That says a lot about United's season and their relevance as fantasy assets tbh

True, although that kind of reflects the truth of how much their stock has fallen in the world of football this season.

They were all overpriced at the start of the season anyway.

How's it going? My team took a major hit this GW by hanging on to RVP all this time. If he doesn't explode next GW I'll keep free-falling.

Sucks doesn't it - a real killer for the DGW, imo. Seeing some people on here with like 112m team value - that's the difference between their Yaya and our Snodgrass, lol.

Having a real shocker this season - 4 red arrows in a row now. Sturridge & Giroud -> RVP & Dzeko (-4) was the catalyst, tbh. You?

What are you plans for RVP, then? I think I'm going to do RVP & Ade -> Aguero & Sturridge in GW31.

          Not much better.
109.4 is just not enough to get that perfect gw31 team.

Init. Basically means we have 2 big hitters in midfield and everyone else has 3.

Just when I needed them most, Snodgrass and Noone are doubtful. Midfielders have been bitches this season.

Rooney in this week for free, or RVP for a hit?

neither, RVP for a hit if you have too. Rooney will frustrate the hell out of you whenever Moyes substitutes Jones/Fellaini to bring on Welbeck as he will shift to CM.

Neither is obviously another option. Can field nine as is, but without a striker. Thanks for the reply GM.

Most of us have Adebayor, who is likely to blank, so not exactly madness.
