Last season it was predictable and consistent because the assist rule was extremely simple - the last player to touch the ball before the goal got the assist.
Maybe 5% of the time, this resulted in the awarding of a daft assist like the cross being cleared by a defender but someone lashing in the rebound.

The only incidents you got with the last touch rule last season were where the touch was uncertain, and I can only really remember Rooney assistgate which was huge.
