We take our regular look at the weekend’s press conferences and post-match reports for any soundbites of interest to Fantasy manager. Sam Allardyce regrets making changes to his West Ham line-up in last week’s defeat at Stoke, Brendan Rodgers discusses Liverpool’s midfield diamond, Felix Magath explains his change of goalkeeper and Mauricio Pochettino reveals the reasons behind his decision to bench Rickie Lambert:

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce appeared to regret making changes to his starting XI following their 3-1 defeat at the Britannia Stadium. Big Sam chose to drop James Collins, who’d picked up an astonishing 40 Fantasy Premier League points in his last six games, in favour of Winston Reid, who’d been struggling to break into the in-form Hammers defence following his return from injury. Fantasy managers investing in West Ham’s assets face the enviable prospect of two home fixtures (Manchester United and Hull) in one Gameweek, but go into the round with an element of uncertainty surrounding Allardyce’s first XI:

“Unfortunately our defending let us down in the second half. We didn’t need to defend very often either, so it’s very upsetting that I didn’t see the defensive side of our game come together today. It was a massive surprise to me. I changed the team around today, one to try and freshen the team up, two to bring some of the players in to show they can deliver, like the lads have delivered before. They’ll be looking at me and saying we’ve lost the game 3-1, so why did I make those changes. I’ll have to say that I’d tend to agree with them after that, because had we kept that solidity in the defensive unit that we normally do I believe we would have got a point at least .”
Sam Allardyce on changing a winning formula.

Tactical tinker man, Brendan Rodgers chose to elaborate on his decision to start Raheem Sterling over Philippe Coutinho at the tip of the midfield diamond in the 3-0 humiliation of United at Old Trafford on Sunday. The Reds now face a trip to Cardiff before welcoming Sunderland to Anfield in their double Gameweek – sides who, like United, tend to place emphasis on high energy, attacking displays. With the Liverpool manager continuing to tweak starting lineups to exploit opposition weaknesses this season, predicting Rodgers’ starting XI is becoming increasingly tricky for Fantasy managers looking to invest in some of the Merseysiders’ assets:

“I wanted to play and have superiority on the inside. I like to flood numbers around the middle of the field in order to control and dominate the game. Manchester United’s centre-halves drop off, so we could exploit the space in front of that with Raheem’s speed and then introduce Philippe [Coutinho] to the game. We worked it the other way against Southampton, where we felt that we could play through and get it into Philippe, who could then open the game up, then bring Raheem into it later when it opens up. In this game, because of the pitch and the nature of Manchester United, being at home they have to attack, it would allow us to get round the back of their midfield.”
Brendan Rodgers talks tactical after completing a league double over Manchester United.

Felix Magath explained his decision to switch goalkeepers ahead of securing a precious first three points against Newcastle. Maarten Stekelenburg had played the previous eight Premier League games, a run in which Fulham had failed to keep a clean sheet and picked up just two points, but the Dutch international made way for David Stockdale as the Cottagers earned their fourth clean sheet of the season:

“It was a hard decision for Maarten but he has taken it very well. Maarten is a quiet keeper, he’s not loud and David is. We needed someone who gave more to the players. Fortunately it worked. David was very good and we can thank him for his performance.”
Fulham boss Felix Magath on vocal goalkeepers.

Newcastle’s assistant manager, John Carver admits Papiss Cisse is lacking in self-belief as the striker endures a goal-less which stretches back to the Gameweek 7 win at Cardiff. Newcastle have struggled to find the net with any regularity since the turn of the year and the defeat at Fulham produced an eighth blank in their last eleven Premier League fixtures. With the Magpies in need of a goalscorer, and Loic Remy again receiving treatment on the sidelines, Cisse will have the chance to play hero if he can re-discover his predatory instincts in a double Gameweek that sees them play host to both Crystal Palace and Everton:

“When you’re a goalscorer, all play on confidence. At the moment Papiss’ confidence is down, only because he hasn’t been scoring goals. What is pleasing is that he keeps in positions to start scoring. If you think back to two seasons ago, he could’ve had his own programme on goal of the season, some of the goals were out of this world. He has worked, it would have dead been easy for him to sulk because he hasn’t been in the team but he has worked extremely hard on the training ground, he has done really well. Good goalscorers when they get confidence they hit the road, maybe he needs a scruffy goal.”
John Carver on Papiss Cisse’s unenviable form.

Following their 4-2 win at the expense of Norwich, Mauricio Pochettino justified his decision to play Ricky Lambert from the benched with tactical reasoning. Having replaced skipper Adam Lallana before the hour mark, Lambert still managed to chip in with a goal and assist and bagged an impressive 11 points against the Canaries:

“As a manager I am always looking for what is best for the team and (for) every player and I thought Rickie coming on as a sub would be good for him and it was. Sometimes tactical decisions go your way and that was the case. Our philosophy is always similar. We made some changes to variables to favour our attacking intent (and) I think Gaston [Ramirez] and Adam [Lallana] linked well. We were just looking through fresh alternatives, which we can use for the rest of a long season.”
Manuel Pochettino explains his tactical switch up front.

Robert Snodgrass reveals that his form is based on being free from injury for the first time this season. The Norwich winger has now notched two goals and an assist in his last five fixtures since returning from injury, including a precautionary half time withdrawal at Villa, and looks a solid mid-priced option in the short term – especially for Fantasy managers hanging on through the double Gameweek. It would certainly be worth noting, however, that Norwich end the season with fixtures from hell, facing Liverpool, United, Chelsea and Arsenal in their final four games – a schedule that will no doubt see many current owners already pencilling in an exit strategy.

“We all have to take responsibility for the goals. I would never have a go at the strikers. Their records speak for themselves. They all want to score goals, they have that hunger and they would be disappointed themselves, but it will turn. You just have to keep supporting the boys. I’ve scored a few goals and chipped in with some assists and I’ve had chances to score more. This is the happiest I have been this season because I have been hampered with injury from the start.”
Robert Snodgrass relishing his return to full fitness.

Lucas is fit again for Liverpool...so how does this affect the rest of the team if at all?

    - Does Gerrard get pushed further up the pitch again?
    - What formation would they likely play?
    - ...and more importantly, how does this affect the playing time of Sterling and the positioning of Suarez and Sturridge?

I think it's important to remember Lucas is no longer nailed on at Liverpool - they seem to have moved on from having him as the destroyer behind the attacking players because he's not so involved when they're in possession. If he did play I guess it would be as the deeper of the midfield two in a 4-2-3-1 alongside Gerrard so Gerrard might get forward more. Regardless Lucas playing would probably mean one of Henderson Coutinho Sterling would have to drop out.

I think Liverpool have moved on quite a bit from Lucas. Both the 4-3-3 and 4-3-1-2 systems they play have no room for Lucas as Gerrard would play in his deepest midfielder position.

I just think that at this level, you should be a better all around player and have some kind of attacking ability if you are going to be playing in midfield. A friend and I always laugh when we see him in a game. We poke fun at the fact that he's Brazilian, as he does not seem to exhibit any skills that you would expect from a Brazil player. Maybe I'm over-ripping the guy, but I just don't understand how he made it this far in the long run.

Oh yeah, I've wondered that too. I reckon if we played him in real life he wouldn't seem that bad at all, I reckon it's only playing at that level that he looks much worse. But yeah I think this is the shift in the game, that with football becoming more and more of a team game, you can't afford to effectively play with one man less in attack. Everyone must be able to pass and everyone must be able to press - you can't just sit in front of the back four hacking people down like de Jong.

I think we are also spoiled by the Premier league slightly; all these "defenders and "midfielders" that only bomb forward (ie Lampard, and basically every wingback). Whereas in other leagues, a good defensive midfielder is as valuable as any other player....Sure Lucas doesn't dazzle when he has the ball..but I'm sure the back four and the keeper love the work that he does

Exactly this...not a flair player by any means but a good tackler and one who isn't afraid of a challenge. It is often these players that make a team click....remember how lackluster Man City looked when Fernandihno was out for a few games?

Completely agree, not an ounce of flair in him but a work rate and eye for a strong challenge that lets his presence be known to players.

I love the Brazilian flair but sometimes you just need someone to come in and clatter a few people to shake them. Dunga was another Brazilian like that who got a lot of abuse for not playing with flair.

In fact, I strongly believe that Man United's season has been seriously hampered by not having a player like that (Fellaini I wouldn't rate as good a DM as these guys). Your point about Fernandinho is spot on, you need the engine in the CM to let the flair happen.

Dunga actually came to mind for me when I was thinking about Brazilian players and past teams and how he was a break from the "norm", if you will. He had so much more character and grit than Lucas, however. Brought a lot more value to the team in general in my opinion. Lucas, when he's not cheap fouling someone and picking up his mandatory yellow, is an oversight on the field. You don't really know he's there.

Yeah I think Fernandinho and Flamini bring more to the game than Lucas. Or Fellaini, unless he's used as a landing pad for aerial bombardment. I think the ultimately defensive midfielder is De Rossi who does the lot.

And that is why guys like Lucas are a dying breed, he doesn't have the box to box edge to his game. (Although I may add that Yaya is somewhat defensively suspect at times).

Yeah Yaya attacks so much that he's not a defensive midfielder in any sense anymore. I think there still is a place for quite a specific type of defensive midfielder, who is the deepest of a midfield three, has all-round ability and can join the center backs to form a back three - with a job description like that there's not many of them - people like Busquets, De Rossi, Javi Martinez and Arteta. All exquisite players and not what we'd normally think of as a 'defensive midfielder'.

Yeah countless memories of him being involved in goals for Everton on Match of the Day highlights. Arteta is a strange one to watch as a Gooner - a fantastically reliable passer who is remarkably good at spotting danger and taking a card for the team - yet I always feel he is in danger of being overpowered. Maybe it's bias.

Perhaps, he never strikes one as a defensive powerhouse in his physique. Probably a case where technique and ability overshadow his physical presence.

It's hard to really be fair in comparison because Dunga was better than Lucas, no questions asked.

But the role of the hard man can be a lot more than just tackles. Lucas' mandatory yellow may often signify to some would-be flair midfielder that "Shit, if I get on the ball and don't move it quickly this guy will hit me hard." It's about creating a presence, nearly a sense of panic that if you hold the ball too long there's some nutter going to get you. Roy Keane was incredible at creating that aura. I'm not saying Lucas is the most noticeable player on the pitch or in any way the most talented but he provides a bit more intimidation.

As for the attitude, it's hard to say. Stevie G, Sturridge and Suarez would be the bigger personalities in the Pool team but you never know the influence Lucas has over his teammates. A great example is Rosicky, he hates interviews, not big on screaming at a lot of his teammates or anything like that. However any young player at Arsenal will always say he's the biggest influence, he takes them under his wing and guides them. You wouldn't get that from watching him desperately trying to escape cameramen!

Definitely are some things you can't see or know about a player unless you are on the team in some sort of capacity. I did check out a little bit of the Being Liverpool series, and it seemed that Lucas was a good presence in the locker room and such. Seemed a good teammate. Plus, there was a part in the show where Rodgers pointed Lucas out in front of the team as an example of how to work hard and be a good professional. Guess in the long run, if I were building a team, I wouldn't even consider him. That's just me. I'd look for another player. That's not to take away from the man himself. Just don't rate him that high as a footballer.

And that's perfectly fair, he wouldn't be the first guy I would run to if I was to build a team but that said we know so little of what really goes on. As I say above, the pure DM like Lucas is becoming a relic, the requirement these days is to be box to box like Paulinho.

The West Wing if you fancy going back a few years.

Game of Thrones is excellent, bit more fantasy but still excellent.

Mob City is a 6 episode (I think at least) series that is quite a good one too.

In the Utd & Sot game, Suarez garnered points through a 4-1-2-1-2.
On the Ful & Swa game, Sturridge rules it in a 4-3-3.

I agree, not been worth the investment I would say!

I enjoyed it certainly but I've mixed feelings now. If we return to our usual play and get hammered against City, last night's win will have give Moyes justification for staying on. (I'm not anti-Moyes but I'm concerned about how he gets them to play)

Central mid was still quite week and the first 20 minutes the passing was so desperately poor I couldn't believe it.

Great to see Valencia put the shift in though, he was a man on a mission. Rooney looked good too. De Gea was outstanding I thought.

In fact, Olympiakos were probably a little unlucky not to score.

My first season in this game. Presently ranked at ~38k.

I was targetting a top 10k finish... but with the slow movements in ranking it seems impossible to achieve. So, what do you reckon would be a reasonable target?

I have received a lot of help from this community. Looking back to the first 10 gameweeks, I see the difference between the so-called "casual" decisions and "better" decisions. My first team had RVP, Anelka and Vellios as the forwards, and I transferred in Wolfswinkel. I had taken a total of 36point hit up until GW10, and my rank had plundered to 1m+ before I found this site. It has been continuous improvement from that point, thanks to the advice of this community...

Thinking about one more DGW player.

Is it worth -4pts to do Lallana -> Nolan ?

I will play Nolan and bench Hazard instead of the team below.

Yaya - Gerrard - Sissoko - Nolan (Hazard)
    SUarez - Lukaku - Sturridge

Alternatives are Johnson or Nasri or Mirallas.

      Anyone worth -4pts to get?

If you had van persie would you take him out for -4 due to his injury? Thanks.

I'd wait to see if he had an injury that was going to keep him out of the next match, and then decide.

What can I do with that team this gameweek chaps? got 0.0 in the bank but willing to take a hit.

Mignolet, Springthorpe, Rafael, Bassong, Coleman, Davies, Fabio, Gerrard, Mirallas, Mata, Lallana, Sidwell, Sturridge, Lambert, van Persie

And also what would you do with RVP? Thanks in advance 🙂

On the main FPL game, when your sort players on the transfer page you can sort by 'form'.

    How is this worked out?
For example, Suarez is on 10.3

      I think it's a players average score over the 3 previous gameweek i.e. Suarez 31 ~ 3 = 10.3.

    I'm contemplating a -16..

RVP, RJrod, Snograss, Ivanovic, Boruc > Sturridge, Lukaku, Silva, Flanagan, Mannone..

Talk me off this ledge, one way or the other

If RVP doesn't make it, that means Rooney up top and Mata in the "No. 10" role.
Man U morale is high at the moment. Mata is rested.
Could be a points bonanza for Mata.

I would lean towards saying that Fletcher out would have a more negative effect on AJ's scoring potential. That being said, I'm not sure it's easy to say one way or another. Sunderland in general are a mixed bag and a bit confused themselves, and I just think there is no way to really gauge what will come next.

    Quick game:

If I pick three Everton players but play only two to end up with this team:

    Coleman/Baines/Williamson/(Azpi/Chester)
    Yaya/Silva/Haz/Gerrard/(?)
    Suarez/Sterling/Dzeko

    Who's missing?

Is this a gamble too far....?

He's been a less dominant force for the last few weeks or so as others play better around him. Still very good for the club, just not in FF terms.
The call of a decent double prospect is too much to ignore. He can come back in if he picks up the goals and assists again.

Yeah I sold him last week and escaped with him scoring a 1 pointer on his exit, as watching recent games and some of the highlights he seemed to be further from the goals and more of a passer.
