Eden Hazard nets another spot-kick as Chelsea suffer a 3-1 Champions League loss to PSG. Jose Mourinho fields Andre Schurrle as the lone forward and is scathing over his other strikers’ recent displays. Ross Barkley remains a doubt for Everton’s clash with Arsenal, Kostas Mitroglou could be out for the season, whilst Stoke’s Oussama Assaidi continues to struggle with a knee problem:

Chelsea Slip to Parisian Defeat

It’s two losses in the space of five days for Jose Mourinho’s boys as they sunk to a 3-1 defeat in their Champions League quarter-final first-leg tie against PSG. Mourinho opted to go into the game without a named striker, instead fielding Andre Schurrle furthest forward with Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian in behind the German. Hazard slotted home a 26th minute penalty after Oscar was brought down in the area, before David Luiz donned his villain cap, slicing the ball into his own net to put Chelsea behind.

Post-match, Mourinho was quick to criticise his team’s defending for each of the three goals they conceded, and also commented on his frontline tinkering:

“Of course. It’s difficult for us to score goals. I’m not happy with my strikers’ performances so I have to try things. With André at least I know we have one more player to have the ball, and even not being dangerous because he’s not a striker, he can associate and the team can have control of the ball. But football is not just about that. It’s also about scoring goals, getting behind, and that is for strikers. Real strikers.”

The Scout Says: Last night’s result, coupled with Saturday’s loss to strugglers Crystal Palace, has clearly got to the Chelsea boss. With Samuel Eto’o struggling with a hamstring injury, Fernando Torres losing his manager’s faith and Demba Ba having never really earned it, Mourinho’s frustration with his strikers is clearly hitting boiling point. In light of this, Schurrle may well continue in the forward role; such out of position prospects will add plenty of appeal to a player who has scored four in his last four Premier League starts. Meanwhile, if it’s goals Mourinho wants, there’s one man still doing his best to find them. Another goal from the spot last night for Hazard will only remind his manager, and Fantasy managers, of the Belgian’s importance for his side; now up to 11.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Hazard is far from budget friendly, but his explosive potential will have those managers who recently sold the Belgian for the double Gameweek 31 looks for a way back in. Home games against Stoke City and Sunderland, with a trip Swansea sandwiched in between, offer Chelsea the ideal opportunity to overcome their dip in form and kick-start their hunt for the title, and Hazard is likely to be the central figure in ensuring that that’s the case.

Martinez Rolls Out Injury Update

Roberto Martinez issued an injury update on a selection of key players yesterday. The Everton boss stressed that Phil Jagielka will feature again soon for his side having missed the Toffees’ last six games with a hamstring injury, though he is still being monitored, and also revealed that Ross Barkley is ‘touch-and-go’ for Sunday’s game against Arsenal after picking up a calf problem last weekend:

“Ross had a knock on his calf and he is recovering well from it. Over the next three or four days we will have a clearer idea of where he is and we are going to treat every day as it comes.”

Martinez also declared his confidence that Steven Pienaar will feature again for Everton this season, after the South African picked up a knee injury playing in the FA Cup last month.

The Scout Says: Plenty of Fantasy managers will be keen to see Barkley prove his fitness for the weekend, with the youngster having started the last three games for the Toffees and scoring in two of those appearances. The midfielder disappointed his 92,000+ new owners last Sunday after he was forced off at half-time against Fulham, and those same owners will be desperate to see the 5.2-priced man make it four starts in a row this weekend. Should he indeed recover, and be handed another start by Martinez, Barkley will be hot property ahead of Everton’s double Gameweek 34. Meanwhile, news that Jagielka will still be eased back into action ensures that Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines remain the Toffees’ defenders of choice, whilst a return to action for Pienaar in the coming weeks will come as yet another worry for owners of Kevin Mirallas, as the South African’s presence will only increase competition in the wide areas.

FULHAM FEAR FOR MITROGLOU

The injured Kostas Mitroglou has travelled to Italy to see a specialist, with fears mounting that the record signing could remain on the sidelines for the rest of season. The £12m man has only featured twice for Fulham since joining in January and has failed to show signs of fully recovering from a knee injury he picked up in training almost a month ago.

The Scout Says: If Fulham weren’t already beginning to regret their decision to splash out on Mitroglou in the winter, yesterday’s developments will truly have them ruing their luck. The striker was a sensation for former club Olympiacos, and Fulham’s capture of the big Greek looked set to lend them a major helping hand in the relegation battle. Subsequently, an initial FPL price of 6.5 was assigned to the Cottagers’ forward and he appeared to have the potential to make a mockery of that price tag. With the Greek international now set to continue on the sidelines and out-of-favour Darren Bent publicly criticising Felix Magath earlier in the week, it seems the Cottagers will be pinning their hopes on the inexperienced Cauley Woodrow or Moussa Dembele in their battle to beat the drop.

Assaidi Still Recovering

Stoke’s on-loan winger admitted he’s not completely over a recent knee problem and is struggling to stake a claim for inclusion in Mark Hughes’ plans for the run-in:

“Things are certainly getting better, but my knee is still not fully healed. I could forget about the pain and play, but that would be a massive long-term risk, so I believe it’s best to be patient and wait for it to get better before playing. I am recovering well so I hope it isn’t too long until I can be picked to play again.”

The Scout Says: Having scored three times in six appearances between Gameweek 15-20, Assaidi looked to have established himself as a regular for the Staffordshire outfit. His recent stint on the sidelines has allowed Marko Arnautovic to cement a role on the left of the attacking midfield three, with the Austrian turning in some crucial displays in a run that has now seen Hughes’ side drop just two points in the last five. With Charlie Adam, Stephen Ireland and Jon Walters now vying for the role in “the hole” and Peter Odemwingie frustratingly classified as a forward, Arnautovic – with 19 points in the last three Gameweeks – still has home games with Newcastle, Spurs and Fulham, in addition to trips to Cardiff and West Brom, to boost his differential appeal.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

There has been a lot of debate in recent weeks about whether this season is the season of the casual, with bandwagons maintaining their form over a number of gameweeks.

There are good arguments on either side. But for me the real problem this season has been a lack of choice caused by transfer policies of the main sides, injuries and the special case of Liverpool.

Chelsea for example failed to invest in a striker - this has deprived us of our usual Drogba or even Anelka option.

ManU - failed to invest adequately - this has left us with an aging defence, a poor midfield and an injured RVP. Rooney is streaky and remains a good option, but there are no other options

Arsenal - Ramsey's injury deprived us of another option since Christmas. Walcott's injury has been the most painful in our search for a reliable 9m midfielder

ManC - Aguero's injury has discounted him from many teams this season

Liverpool - this for me is the biggest change. With no European competition and a fit Sturridge this has enabled the team to gel and take advantage of their key players. It's a perfect storm of good coaching, no European distractions, form players and lack of injuries. Next season with Champions League football we will not be so lucky and Suarez will not be the force he is now as the default captaincy option.

So the question is - what do you want to change at some of the bigger clubs next season to ensure we have more choice as fantasy managers.

Top of my shopping list is decent Chelsea striker.

I think if ManU fail to qualify for any European competition and can recruit a decent winger with assist potential, then their strikers and whichever winger they get will be great options - at a discount now too after this season.

      1. Yaya Toure to be sold to a non prem league club so he can stop monopolizing city attack points, thus making navas, nasri, and perhaps even jovetic decent options

      2. Sherwood's replacement to start playing eriksen consistently

      3. Barkley/Januzaj to be nailed on.. oh and deulofeu to be categorized as a mid by FPL towers, if he stays on

      Chelsea - Striker

Arsenal - New medical staff / treatment room

Man U - a GOOD winger, a proper winger, and RVP gone.

Man C - Kolarov nailed on.

Everton - Nailed on proven Striker.

Spurs - A good manager that hates rotation.

Liverpool - Coutinho to start scoring and keep his place. AND better defending.

      Southampton - Same again lads!

      West Ham - Relegation.

It won't change. The problem is now the over exploition of the game. So many websites out there like this now with so many realted articles. It means that all this fantastic data and player picks is really just damaging everyone. Whoever comes up next year will still be taken on by the masses. The games not that enjoyable anymore because you HAVE to be a dullard. There won't be diff's as such anymore because half of the websites out there will hvae them as a pick. The only thing we'll be fighting in the future is the deadteams that got off to a good start. People think it's just this yr but the trend started last yr when places like this started to become more popular. It was hard enough to move up the rank coming to the end last yr too. It's only going to get worse.

Haha you seem to think that this site gets it right all the time 😀

Just because we all think the same and look at the same stats doesn't mean that we pick the right players.. These sites are indicators, nothing more. You could still pick out a lovely differential by "having a gut feeling".

A week ago I calculated that if you took the Dream Team for the season, replaced Rooney with JRod, filled the bench with cheapies and captained Suarez every time, then you could have purchased that squad for less than 100m in GW1 and, with no changes or auto-subs, it would have been 132nd in the world last week.

It would have been higher still with the help of auto-subs if the right 4.0 defenders and 4.5 mid had been selected for the bench, but would that make up the gap of about 100 points between 132nd and 1st? And the odds against selecting that exact squad in GW1 would be astronomical.

A dead team might go a long way in the Cup, it might make the highest score of the game-week, it might even be top of the world for a few weeks (remember kingKONG in 2010-11?), but it would be almost impossible for it to keep this up for an entire season.

If anything I think these sites make it more competitive as more people are gaining access to better info and are making more educated and calculated transfers / punts.

I agree though that template teams are the downside of these sites, inevitable though.

i can see what you are saying with some players this year.
case being coleman and barkley, this site was making lots of noise about both them pre season and look at the start they got off to.
having owned coleman a few years ago i don't think I would have went back there without the talk on here.

I think it all goes back to when The Scout replaced The Pundit on the FPL website, so now everyone knows about FFS, whereas previously it was a secret known only to a small minority.

Another problem is that the January Wildcard results in too many similar teams in the second half of the season.

But while there are now a far greater number of reasonably competent FPL managers, making it more difficult than it used to be to get into the top thousand or even the top 100k, it is interesting that at the very top the scores of the leading managers are still quite spread out.

I'd like any of the newly promoted clubs who manage to avoid relegation to come back next season with investment cash, and buy players to fill their weaknesses - Palace, for example - already a good solid defence - if they had a promising striker/attacking midfielder like Lallana/Berahino

As a Liverpool fan I'd love if we bought wisely & well over the summer...I can't remember the last summer where the powers that be at Liverpool have not bought suitable players or lightweights i.e Aspas etc. So to put it bluntly I'd like to see the 'Pool buy a world class centre half, world class attacking midfielder & a 3rd semi world class striker to complement the dynamic duo upfront ...not too much to ask for 🙂

        World Class CB = € 25,000,000
        World Class CAM = € 40,000,000
        Semi WC STR = € 15,000,000

I'd prefer a winger to an attacking midfielder.

Coutinho and Suso (and even Sterling) will be our CAM coverage, but Sterling is currently our only proper wide player.
Konoplyanka or some other decent winger would be a good signing.

I'd say we want more of an all round CM to come in, such as Rakitic. Can play anywhere in a midfield three, and is a great CAM.

Im not sure we'll be signing a CB tbh, we have 4 good CBs and hopefully over the summer can work on shoring up the defence with training ground work. Ilori will come back from loan and could replace one if sold too.

Another striker could be a good option, though I'd say Borini wouldn't be a terrible 3rd choice striker to have if we don't get one. Certainly better than what Arsenal and Chelsea have.

Another full back would be good to get. Replace Cissokho with a decent LB, Enrique is solid but not amazing and has been injured all season.

Backup keeper to replace Jones maybe?

Tbh I got lucky because one of those -12 was in GW 10 to bring in suarez+aguero+hazard..

          That went well.

odd how frisking the fixtures says be wary of Stoke yet Aranutovic is talked up in the scout scribbles.
Personally I think their fixtures are good, even the Chelsea game could be profitable given it's sandwiched inbetween the PSG games and Stoke are in great form.
    In conclusion come on Stoke!

after Chelsea game, arnautovic is a great option....such a talented player, just needs to work on his attitude

I like Arnie too but would you buy him the week of the Chelsea game, or wait one week? The Frisking articles look at quite short windows (4 weeks really) so a single tough game next week can make all the difference.

Once the Chelsea game is done, Stoke will probably move into The Strong, or Also Consider. In any case, none of them are saying "only players with good fixtures will score points". It's just one factor.

I really don't know what to do about my team for the next 2 weeks. I have £1.5m in the bank but dont know which transfers to make?

    Mannone
    Coleman, Azpi, Cahill, Coleman, Williamson
    YAYA, Haz, Snod, Nolan, Hoolhan
    Suarez, Sturridge, Lukaku

-My defence is fine for the moment. Plan to bring Zaba in for Coleman after DGW34
-Need to replace nolan but cant decide who for?
-Have been looking at Dzeko for the double but he depends alot on if Aguero is back!

It is undeniable that Lallana is on top form at the moment. But does he appear as being essential for the end of this season? Can he still shine against teams fighting for the title (City) or Europe (United, Everton)?

    Mannone - Gazzinga

    Bardsley - Baines - Coleman - Bruce - Chester

    Gerrard - Nasri - Silva - Yaya - Ki

    Suarez - Lukaku - Sturrdige

I have 2ft and 1.1m in the bank.

Would definitely get Rakitic, they're high on confidence after denting Real's title hopes.. One of pogba/pirlo would be good with Vidal suspended for first leg.

I think all games' teamsheets are out before deadline this week, so that makes things easier

Rosco - if 'Frisking the Fixtures' only focuses on next four weeks, maybe you should limit the colored boxes to the next 4? I think that creates the confusion sometimes, i.e. having Liverpool in the weak?
