Our fourth and final defender in your recently-voted “Team of the Season” is Crystal Palace’s Joel Ward. When the player price lists were published last July, the Eagles versatile full-back found his way into many Fantasy managers’ plans as a cheap fifth defender but it took a change of manager three months into the season before Ward began to pick up the points.

The Statistics

Starting the season priced at just 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Ward’s security of starts made him a favourable budget option amongst the promoted clubs. By early November, though, his owners were having second thoughts as the Eagles struggled under the guidance of Ian Holloway – nine defeats in the opening 10 fixtures, with at least two goals conceded on eight occasions, saw Ward pick up just nine FPL points.

Holloway’s decision to part company with the Selhurst Park club proved the turning point. Caretaker boss Keith Millen immediately steadied the ship with back-to-back clean sheets against Everton and Hull before Tony Pulis took over in Gameweek 13 and set about steering Palace to safety.

Mainly fielded at left-back, Ward’s versatility saw him fill in on the opposite side of the back-four and also, occasionally, in central midfield as he proceeded to play every minute of the Pulis regime, missing just two league matches all season. The Palace defender eventually rose to 4.5 by the time the season came to a close, with a trio of assists, 12 clean sheets and 13 bonus points helping him to 123 points – the third best outfield player in terms of value over the entire FPL campaign.

The Prospects

The defensive impact made by Pulis won’t be overlooked by Fantasy games, with a price rise certainly to be expected. In the 26 matches under his guidance, Palace picked up 10 clean sheets – putting that into perspective, only three of the top four (Chelsea, with 14, Arsenal, with 13, and City’s 11) managed to exceed this level of resilience. In terms of goals against over that period, Palace again excelled – 27 strikes conceded is, once again, fourth most impressive in the top-flight behind Chelsea (17), City (25) and Everton (26) – defences that will all be listed in the premium bracket next time around.

A hike to 5.0 in FPL is perhaps the most realistic, though this may prove too much of a deterrent for many, with plenty of alternatives in the budget bracket to catch our attention. Nonetheless, it’s worth noting that Ward averaged 3.9 points per game upon Pulis’ installation and, if he keeps a share of corners, those defensive stats suggest Palace’s main options at the back could still be worth our consideration. Another factor in Ward’s favour is that the new Bonus Points System (BPS) favours his style of play – all 13 of those bonus points came courtesy of clean sheets and if Pulis can instill the same level of resilience, the full-back looks set to benefit once again.

Further analysis of Palace’s defensive displays under Pulis shows that their returns were, by and large, fairly predictable. Whilst they were almost as reliable on the road as they were at Selhurst Park (six shut-outs in front of their own fans, with four away), the Eagles struggled against most of the top sides. Only one of their 10 clean sheets arrived against a team inside the top eight, perhaps making the decision if/when to bench Ward and co a little more straightforward.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    what's better, ramsey's finish or giroud's backheel?

leaning towards giroud's backheel. running the wrong way, has the awareness to see ramsey's run and the touch to execute the lofted back-heel which allows rambo to volley it first time

think this is as god as it gets, pace always going to hold him back at the top top level. he's a very good striker but unfortunately 4th in the premier league is probbaly about his level. they need someone better to go higher, someone who will score those goals in the top of the table clashes etc

          *good as it gets.

basically i think he can become a slightly more refined version of himself the next few years, and as he doesnt rely on pace will probably be able to carry on longer into his 30s at the top level. the fear is even the best version of himself may be good for bringing ramsey and walcott into play but it's a criminal cock-block of ozil and cazorla's talents too

Maybe AB but when you don't have pace to lose don't you stay improving into your early 30 ' s as your appreciation of tactics and space grows?

I'm not saying they could not be better with more of a goalscorer up front but the top top ones are not easy to get even when you spend 50m on proven talent (torres? In fact Chelsea have splashed out on loads of big name strikers with only Drogba being a success). If bayern can win the Champions league with mandzukic then arsenal can with giroud imo.

they can win it with giroud for sure, chelsea almost won the thing with torres/eto'o/ba. just puts a lot more pressure on the wingers to step up, fine when you have ribery and robben/muller for example. remy and walcott either side of giroud could be an interesting compromise if he can't find a world class striker this summer. ideal world though just buy a better striker, and i don't mean in the simplified form of more goals, one who is just more complete in and out the box, bit more pace, bit more clinical, but with the all-round game too, which giroud is pretty good at

I agree if he could find this player great but no point spending huge money on someone only slightly better imo. Remy for instance would not be as good for the team as giroud imo but would give them options to change it up if plan A was not working.

if remy is available for 10m or less i think you have to swoop regardless of what happens elsewhere. he gives you 3 playing positions and a real contrast to giroud, great for the squad

Sure he does that at real because if he doesn't he won't make the team but I'd say he would revert to his lazy glory hunting self at arsenal. I agree that there is almost zero percent chance of it happening though.

one final giroud point. his ability in the air was so disappointing last season. in pre-season i thought the arsenal crossing was the issue and giroud was great in the air. now it has completely reversed, sagna's crossing stock flew up last season it's just the assists didn't come as giroud was blowing them

Yeah he should really be better in the air for his size and he does need to get more assists too imo but 16 goals from play for a striker not on pens is far from shabby. The golden boot was won by tevez with 21 goals while at city I think and he took pens to get to that total.

For those writing arsenal off as failures and saying the need a top striker they did just finish 7pts off the eventual winners of the pl with a horrific season injury wise and with ozil not having a full pre season and running out of steam. They don't need much to put in a real challenge next season except a bit of luck imo.

Don't bother throwing the big game tanking stats about either as there was mitigating circumstances in every result e.g. arteta missing out v city and Koscielny going off injured, for the others they were missing one of or all three of Walcott, Ramsey and Ozil and while every team has injuries not many have to do without so many key players for big games.

Btw I'm not a gooner but I don't like the way people just regurgitate the journalistic diatribe about them. The media this time last year were saying Chesney was a terrible goalkeeper and that Wenger needed to invest while it was clear he is a better goalkeeper than Hart. Before that it was mertesacker is rubbish yet the guy had over 70 caps for Germany and in between they tried to make a laughing stock out of Koscielny. They also said the squad wasn't strong enough in midfield but Wenger obviously saw the quality Ramsey and wilshere had coming through and investment here would have severely restricted their development.

Quite possibly MR.G but I think the injuries would still have cost them in the end.

I just don't think they need as much as the journo's make out they do. Tbh I think they would do better with a speedy wide/forward player to give them a plan b when plan a is not working and when Walcott is injured and a proper powerful Def mid like matic/yaya (flamini is probably good enough for the bench but really hurts them when he has to play imo) who can really dominate the space in front of the back 4.

Arsenal would have scored far more goals and Liverpool would have scored far less. He might not have stopped the bloodbaths away at Chelsea and City but games like Swansea (H), Man U (H & A), Stoke (A), could have easily been wins. Arsenal weren't that far away in the end.

So who where would you suggest thus "world class" striker should come from? I don't see many out there that could make much difference to arsenal.

It is easy to say buy a world class striker it is much more difficult to get them when you have vultures higher up the food chain than you all looking for the same thing

and that's the problem...we would have to break the bank for benzema, cavani etc. but then would they leave anyway? there were many available this summer and wenger blew it quite frankly

I don't think it is as easy as people think to get the kind of player you are talking about tbh and Wenger is not wreckless enough to splash 50m on a Fernando torres or an Andy Carroll.

For all those fans wanting Wenger to walk be careful what you wish for is my advice.

no I want wenger to say...he made a mistake and has the chance to redeem himself this window...remy though for example has the potential to be great and is cheap so he would be a great buy

Stage 1 (3 group games): Pick a 23 man squad, either pick 11 who you think will do well in all 3 games, or pick 23 that you rotate between the 3 matches.
Stage 2 (Last 16) Free transfers, pick 11 players who you think will do well. Perhaps pick a few back up options in case injuries happen/your main teamers get dropped between transfer deadline and game day.
      Stage 3 - See stage 2.

Pick a captain. Go. (They've dumbed it down a lot since last time).

Oh, and if the rules stay the same, pick 5-4-1 formation (if possible) with 5 CB's, 4 DM's, and a striker.

At the moment it's just interest from Liverpool.

According to the terms of his transfer from Bayern Munich in 2013, Can can't join any other Bundesliga side than Bayern. Can can join any overseas team, however, can Can.

Ward was perhaps one of my favourite winter purchases. Nearly always delivered when I rotated him into my team, and it's hard to argue with bonus points from cleans sheets from a player under 4.5.

surely scoring or ripping open a defence is the best way to take a game by the scruff of the neck though? viera and keane's best qualities were that their defensive discipline allowed others to play. yaya doesn't need anyone else!

Keane scored important goals when the team needed them, think juvenile in champions league semi the year they won the treble. When Utd bought him it was as a goalscoring midfielder off forest but he was disciplined enough to do what the team needed rather than what he wanted unlike toure who was a defensive liability at times last year.

Lolwut? Scholes could do the flashy stuff but there is a lot more to being a top midfielder than passing and scoring. Keanes control of a game is underrated imo he knew when to play direct and speed the game up and when to take the sting out of a game when the other team was gaining momentum. Very close between Vieira and Keane for the best mid but I think for controlling a game and being a team player keane slightly edges it although both yaya and Vieira were way better technically

They are all so immensely gifted, that how you rank them comes down to what aspects of the game you are looking at and what their specific teams at the time could benefit from them.

Putting the bias back in place however, Yaya is the greatest, as the two other could be some really dirty c*nts at times.

In the McDonalds WC game, it says

How many players can I buy/sell during the tournament?
You can replace as many players as you like as long as all squad conditions are met and you have the required money.

Does that mean you can change your whole team / squad for every game so you have 11 players involved in each game???

dino on the strikers subject you vertured right up my street mentioning mandzukic in a grioud topic. think giroud and mandzukic are both one end of the scale for strikers. at the other end of the scale you have the falcaos.
strip the penalties and he has 46 goals in 85 matches over the past 3 seasons. bearing in mind he doesn't do assists and doesn't do outside the area and the harshest way of looking at that is (bearing in mind that goal tally is made up of several braces, hattricks, even a 5!) he's left his team effectively with 10 men for about 50 of those 85 matches! the counter argument is defences will be on worried about falcao so maybe his presence opens up space for others.
at least if giroud and mandzukic aren't scoring you're not left with 10 men effectively. maybe absolutely no coincidence atletico stepped up a level this season since selling him (and not even using the money!), maybe he's just a slightly better javier hernandez.
think this is a problem with the transfer market, players are valued on what they can do alone, despite it being a team sport all about partnerships all over the pitch. as a result your giroud and mandzukic will always be underpriced, whilst the falcaos will always be overpriced.

AB I guess this is more or less what I was arguing.

While nobody is saying giroud is a rvp, suarez, Aguero or Rooney in reality these players are very hard to come buy and each of these was a gamble on a youngish player before they came good.

I think Giroud does a great job for the Arsenal team and don't necessarily think they would be that much better with a cavani or Falcao playing instead of him. I do think they need a quality backup to augment him though.

Again I think it is the media the perpetuates this arsenal need a top striker to win the league myth when quite often teams don't need a top striker to win if they have the correct balance elsewhere.

If Chelsea had giroud this year they would probably have won the league imo (still not saying he is as good a goal scorer as the fwds mentioned above) and I think if arsenal had sturridge as their main man they would not have done as well even though he would probably have scored more than giroud.

if they go all chelsea 2004 on us then 7.0 will be good value. ideally 6.5 though.
also worth noting if chelsea buy a sh*t-hot striker there's a few less baps to go around the defence on paper

      What are we thinking :
      Terry / Ivan 7.0
      Cahill 6.5 / azpi 6.5 ?
Not sure I'll have that much cash to spare , for me it's all about Kieran Trippier Burnley (41 apps, 1 goal, 12 assists) the highly-rated right-back is likely to be our main focal point amongst the Burnley backline !!!!

I hope Azpilicueta comes in under the radar at £6.0m, but i'd be willing to pay £6.5m for Cahill.

Trippier is almost a cert for me, Chelski, Trippier, Dann + 2 others.

How much do you think Trippier will be 4.5 ?
Hopefully Dann will come in at 4.5 and that's our cheapies sorted ,
We really are going to have to use our initiative if we want Yaya / Ramsey / Suarez / Aguero in our squads ,
I'm not sure we will have 6.5/7 m to play with for defenders.
At least harsh pricing will break up template choices.

Yeah, probably £4.5m for Trippier, £6.0m for Azpilicueta, £5.0m for Dann, then the other two + keepers will probably be £4.0m/£4.5m.

Atletico Madrid will have to wait to be presented with La Liga trophy because head of Spanish FA is travelling. They have to wait until the first day of next season to be presented with their prize.

What a fecking FA.. they fought hard and won after 38 games and now have to wait for 3 months to lift the trophy!
