Our fourth and final defender in your recently-voted “Team of the Season” is Crystal Palace’s Joel Ward. When the player price lists were published last July, the Eagles versatile full-back found his way into many Fantasy managers’ plans as a cheap fifth defender but it took a change of manager three months into the season before Ward began to pick up the points.

The Statistics

Starting the season priced at just 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Ward’s security of starts made him a favourable budget option amongst the promoted clubs. By early November, though, his owners were having second thoughts as the Eagles struggled under the guidance of Ian Holloway – nine defeats in the opening 10 fixtures, with at least two goals conceded on eight occasions, saw Ward pick up just nine FPL points.

Holloway’s decision to part company with the Selhurst Park club proved the turning point. Caretaker boss Keith Millen immediately steadied the ship with back-to-back clean sheets against Everton and Hull before Tony Pulis took over in Gameweek 13 and set about steering Palace to safety.

Mainly fielded at left-back, Ward’s versatility saw him fill in on the opposite side of the back-four and also, occasionally, in central midfield as he proceeded to play every minute of the Pulis regime, missing just two league matches all season. The Palace defender eventually rose to 4.5 by the time the season came to a close, with a trio of assists, 12 clean sheets and 13 bonus points helping him to 123 points – the third best outfield player in terms of value over the entire FPL campaign.

The Prospects

The defensive impact made by Pulis won’t be overlooked by Fantasy games, with a price rise certainly to be expected. In the 26 matches under his guidance, Palace picked up 10 clean sheets – putting that into perspective, only three of the top four (Chelsea, with 14, Arsenal, with 13, and City’s 11) managed to exceed this level of resilience. In terms of goals against over that period, Palace again excelled – 27 strikes conceded is, once again, fourth most impressive in the top-flight behind Chelsea (17), City (25) and Everton (26) – defences that will all be listed in the premium bracket next time around.

A hike to 5.0 in FPL is perhaps the most realistic, though this may prove too much of a deterrent for many, with plenty of alternatives in the budget bracket to catch our attention. Nonetheless, it’s worth noting that Ward averaged 3.9 points per game upon Pulis’ installation and, if he keeps a share of corners, those defensive stats suggest Palace’s main options at the back could still be worth our consideration. Another factor in Ward’s favour is that the new Bonus Points System (BPS) favours his style of play – all 13 of those bonus points came courtesy of clean sheets and if Pulis can instill the same level of resilience, the full-back looks set to benefit once again.

Further analysis of Palace’s defensive displays under Pulis shows that their returns were, by and large, fairly predictable. Whilst they were almost as reliable on the road as they were at Selhurst Park (six shut-outs in front of their own fans, with four away), the Eagles struggled against most of the top sides. Only one of their 10 clean sheets arrived against a team inside the top eight, perhaps making the decision if/when to bench Ward and co a little more straightforward.

I had a go at working out some 'fair' player values for next season so I can compare them to the real ones when they come out and identify value for money. I did this by multiplying the PPG stat by 35 (a reasonable amount for a season) and dividing by 20 (20 points/million for 100million is a reasonable amount).
    A selection:
    Suárez 15.6, Yaya Touré 12.1, Sturridge 11.9, Ramsey 11.0
    Gerrard 10.5, Adebayor 10.0, Baines 9.3
    Eriksen 9.3, Remy 9.1, Terry 8.9

Interesting to see Baines and Terry 'worth' so much. Their prices are likely to be 7.5, 8 tops so perhaps they should be first names on the teamsheet.

Doing the same thing at the end of the 12/13 season rated Bale worth 14.3, RVP 13.1, Suarez 12.2, Baines and Terry both 8.9.

I'm sure FPL price according to the 100 mill budget as much as anything to do with form...So many players over 10 mill..so many over 9.0 and so on. Not that I've seen any strict pattern, more a rule of thumb on their part.

Interesting concept MR.G. The one thing you have to take account of for value is captain choices though. Pure Olivia posted a few years ago about only having two big hitters to cover captains then you should be looking for the best value (points per million) players to fill the rest of your team and it is something I have tried to stick to picking my starting team since. Once you have more cash you can squeeze another biggie or two in while still affording the best value players

Good work TFF. Although I didn't contribute to most questions I racked my brain on most.

Some light questions of my own. Hopefully impossible to Google:

    1) Which player this season won his fourth consecutive Serie A title in as many years?

    2) Who was the last player to have won back to back Champions League winners' medals at different clubs?

    3) Which three-time Champions League winner and one-time runner-up has played Premier League football for Liverpool?

    4) Steven Caulker is the only outfield player (along with three goalkeepers) to have achieved what this season?

    5) Who played Premier League football for his fifth London club during the 2013/14 season?

Lads I recently asked this question :
anyone else use the monthly filter in FPL for Mini league purposes ,
ie payout for months eg sept / oct etc ?
My question is what happens with hits , they don't always seem to deduct them thus creating flawed scores within a month and allowing a ' cheat ' scenario ,
    Anyone help ?
To which I got a few answers basically stating that point hits at the start of the month were not deducted , ie Free - this for me is a major flaw if say your running monthly prizes and I can't understand why FPL can't factor this in.
I then proceeded to email this same q to FPL to which they replied :

Please note that points deducted for transfers made for the first Gameweek of each month do not count towards the monthly score.

For example when you make transfers for Gameweek 37 you are not deducted points for these transfers in the May monthly score.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Fantasy Premier League Support
It reaffirmed what I said but still hasn't answered my overall q as why it can't be rectified ,
Your monthly score in your FPL classic leagues is flawed if you've taken a hit in the first week and FPL ain't doing anything about it - in fact they think it's ok.

Because it is ok. It's set for those who are in effect doing several leagues in one season as oppose to a bolt on competition to the season long league. It makes perfect sense if you are wanting to run a league over and over again throughout the season...which has the added advantage of multiple wins in works mini leagues etc.

I'm not sure I understand what your saying but surely Hit(s) from the first week of any month should be deducted from your monthly score ?
It seems to me that this is a major flaw and should be addressed to reflect more accurate scores in monthly run mini leagues - it gives some an advantage over others when hits are not deducted - is it just coding etc in a programme or am I missing something ?
